That would be the VSS Vintorez, a rifle for which production numbers is in the low thousands and for which ammo is custom made specifically for its only operators, Russian Spestnaz. It's not exactly standard issue, it'd be like finding an XM8 in a deerstand.
-
Sniper rifle silencers? Don't exist for all intents and purposes - sniper rifles need to use supersonic rounds to be effective (exception: VSS Vintorez 9mm subsonic). While the rifles in the game CAN be chambered with subsonic ammunition, subsonic 7.62 and .50 caliber rounds (and whatever the Russian rifles use) are so limited in use (and controlled in distribution) that they're practically custom made, and spawning large quantities of the ammunition in the backcountry of a Soviet satellite would be ridiculously unrealistic. Gameplay or not, it's completely unrealistic to include silenced sniper rifles. You can justify having M16s scattered around by the game's campaign and military presence, sure. But for silenced rifles to be in the game, you'd have to say that Chernarus was crawling with SEAL teams and Spetsnaz armed to the teeth.

...what? Are you saying you want to take orienteering and make it an automatic mechanic? Dude, you have a map, you have a compass. See that building or bend in the road? Take compass heading and distance, you have your location. There's the sun, here's a watch, figure out way is north. Here's a COMPASS, figure out which way you're facing. Don't take a decent mechanic that was put in the basic game engine itself and dumb it down. And, by the way, map location is only enabled for yourself on TAG-ENABLED servers. It will ONLY display your location and the location of anyone you've spotted in your LoS - as in, you can't just look at the map of Cherno from miles away and see "Oh, sniper on the hill at GR#."

Sniping At Northeast Airstrip at 900 meters

Jesus Christ. He just respectfully took criticism and accepted advice from a flamebaiter. WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE. -
I cant lean left or right anymore ??
thorgold replied to stareht's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
You spawn with a flashlight, which counts as a weapon for purposes of leaning. -
As the person in Bandit Act #7, you can guess that I'm fairly happy I bound my key beforehand. It'd be awesome if enough people - bandits and survivors alike - became aware of the surrender key and its functions that we'd see more nonlethal robberies. They make for much better stories!

Good luck finding a boat that's fully repaired and fueld that's on the same .5 square kilometer island.

[FORUM] Change the way the Suggestions Forum is displayed by default, and Moderate the Suggestions Forum
thorgold replied to Deviant (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Most replies: See below Moderate: FULL DAMN SUPPORT I don't think that making most replies the filter would be very beneficial, as it would prevent newer suggestions (of quality, mind you) from getting much attention. How would new theads be observed and commented on? People won't go out of there way to check the end pages of the forum, it's why we have so many dupe threads in the first place (hell, people don't even read the FIRST page). -

Adrenaline rush doesn't prevent hydrostatic shock - aka, the pressure wave in your blood after a bullet impact that essentially shuts off your brain (this is what happens when someone is killed instantly from a bullet). Adrenaline only dulls pain, heightens response time, and allows for bursts of energy. That's discounting the fact that a zombie with permanent adrenaline flooding would probably die from cardiac arrest. As for the rest... No, I DON'T get what you're saying, I don't understand one sentence. And very mature, mocking me on age. Care to explain what your son's "availest" is?

Loot does respawn after 15 minutes, but all the items in the spawn need to be moved away first. It's a process called "loot cycling," which is the alternative to server hopping when players want to farm a loot point.

If changing FoV is a cheat, then enabling low graphics to avoid bushes is also a cheat. Fuck no. Use common sense, it's a visual option that's perfectly within a gamer's rights to edit to suit his computer and his preferences. Heck, improper FoV can even give you vertigo/nausea. So people with high FoVs have more peripheral vision, so what? They also have to look at stuff from farther away.

It's actually a testament to the community that it took so long for such an obvious idea to surface. Though, yeah, 'dem goldfarmers.

But he FAILED: F*ck you, DayZ Crew. (5) Everything about this game, (7) Is messed up atm. (6?!?) Unless you pronounce "atm" as "aht-um" instead of "ay-tee-em"

1) Zombies are not "zombies," per say. They're "rabies"-infected humans, and making them superhuman in regards to health would be annoying and unrealistic. 2) REDUCE the number of zombies? Are you kidding? Currently, there's a maximum of 500 or so zombies per server. Chernogorsky ALONE should have had a population of at least twice that. The game already feels empty in regards to zombie counts, and you want to halve that? No. 3) Make zombies slower I can understand, but no slower than a player. Additionally, zombies are slated to be made to run in buildings, it's currently an AI hiccup that isn't high priority enough to fix. 4) No. Zombie aggro is fine at this point, we don't need them to go back to the blind/deaf zombies of pre 1.7.2 5) What accelerating effect? The zig-zag? That's just an AI hiccup, slated for fix. 6) Well, how about you make some movement models and animations. If you can make something better, by all means, show us. Until then, don't complain about "unrealistic" animations, especially when they're perfectly acceptable. 7) They do 8) They do, most of the time they can still hear you running, which is the source of the line-of-sight bug misconception 9) They do 10) If it was possible, zombies would be perma-spawned. The current radius is the temporary range Rocket found appropriate without causing major lag. 11) As in, zombies in the countryside? Already suggested, Rocket has already said he's going to do it in the future. 12) No. They're still human, and human hearing/smell sucks. We're visual creatures. 13) Already suggested, already on Rocket's to-do list (dogs are coming) 1) Already have this 2) So what? If they want to metagame, let them. 3) Already suggested, no. The average joe doesn't carry a switchblade on him at all times. 4) How about no. 5) Hiding bodies is unrealistic? Sure, the "sink into the ground" animation is "unrealistic," but it's a placeholder for the complex process of hiding a body in the environment by other means (shove in a barrel, bury, hide in a bush, haystack, etc). 6) Already in game, not in DayZ due to some bugs and the fact that it's so limited in use as to be not worth the effort to add in. 7) It doesn't pass rapidly. "Shock," which is an anti-PvP mechanic, is the only thing that passes. Pain needs painkillers. 8) Already exists. You run faster after standing still than after 5 minutes of running. When you stop running, your aim is shaky. If you run, rather than walk, your hunger bar drains faster. 9) How about no? What use would this be, besides being arbitrary difficulty? The player, not the character, is the source of emotion - it's unrealistic to enforce a "Your character is frightened!" mechanic. If I'm freaked out by zombies/players, my inaccuracy or haste will be the result of my adrenaline, not an arbitrary game mechanic. 10) No. Temperature is realistic and makes sense, an "immune" bar makes... very little sense whatsoever, and would just be an arbitrary change. Why remove temperature? What's the point of an immune bar? 11) Tents placement is currently bugged, but with the right experience you can place them anywhere. Only noobs such as yourself think that tents can only placed in meadows, and this serves to show that you haven't played the game much. 12) Already suggested, debated to hell and back. 1) No. Ghillie suits are perfectly fine. If you're close enough that a backpack would give them away, you're close enough to see them, anyway. 2) Already suggested to hell and back. 3) What? 4) Already simulated by temperature mechanic. 5) No. 6) You complain ghillie is overpowered, then suggest military grade body armor? So... exactly what we have now? Ho jesus 1) Already suggested to hell and back, on Rocket's to-do list 2) Technically impossible due to limitations of servers being unable to support 50 players and 500 zombies. NPC AI would be impossible to support while maintaining playability 3) Weapon durability is rated in the tens of thousands of rounds (an M4 carbine is rated at around 3,000 rounds before jamming in a desert environment). On the scale that DayZ occurs, any weapons degradation would be so hyper-accelerated as to be unrealistic. 4) Already exists. Crawl in the open flap. 5) Windage already exists, but would cause too many technical issues and lag with the servers. 6) No. 7) AKA, quests? Fuck no. This is a survival sim, not goddamn WoW 8) Suggested to hell and back, is in game, not used in DayZ due to technical issues 9) Dogs are incoming and other animals may be on the way, too. 10) Cooked meat can last for over a week before spoiling, canned goods last for years. Food spoiling would be an arbitrary mechanic with no real application due to the scope of the game. 11) Suggested to hell and back 12) Suggested to hell and back 13) Barbed wire, sandbags, tank traps. Zombies are just currently bugged and can clip through them, will be fixed eventually. 14) No. 15) FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, NO. 16) Arbitrary, though I wouldn't complain if it was added. In summary:

Unless you hear a sniper shoot at you. In which case, double-tap W is your friend; that and forests. But, in all seriousness: 1) Be patient. If you wait long enough and pay attention, you can get into and out of any town without aggroing a zombie. The only reason they'll aggro is if they see you running or they get too close - so unless you're too impatient to go prone and wait for a zed to pass by / walk away, you can get into even NWA without needing a weapon. 2) Don't avoid NWA, Cherno, or Elektro, but be aware that those are bandit hotzones. The reason they're hotzones is because there is good loot, and the fastest way to gear up is to go to good loot locations. Be stealthy, but quick - don't sit around for an hour in the Cherno firehouse, but don't spend an hour crawling down the street to avoid aggro. I say "don't avoid" because it's indisputable that if you want gear quickly and efficiently, that's the place to go, but go in knowing that there is significant danger and prepare for it. 3) If a player is looking at you, shoot first. If they're not looking at you, get away as fast as possible. The best way to survive is to avoid conflict - so when you hear another player getting close, the best thing to do is not hunt them down but to put distance between you and them. If they see you and conflict is inevitable, take initiative and get the first shot in. (Unless they're doing the friendly dance, in which case, choose to be a bandit or not) 4) Stay away from open areas. Stick to the treeline. 5) Stay away from hilltops. Stay on hillsides to avoid skylining yourself as a target. Oh, and most importantly: DO NOT GET ATTACHED TO YOUR GEAR. You will die. It's not a question of if, it's when. You will lose that M4A1 you luckily found in a deerstand, you will lose those NVGs you found on a dead guy, you will lose the car you worked so hard to rebuild and drive. You will lose your gear to bandits, zombies, bandit zombies, glitches, hackers, game updates, ninjas, Mike Tyson, admin abuse, and every time there's a full moon on the first Thursday of the month. No avoiding it, so get it into your skull right now - loot is fleeting. You get it, you lose it, you get it back.

Hence why the forum was so ripe for trolling. Poe's Law and whatnot. Gotta admit, though, the Angry Manager parody was subtle. -

Sick of players DCing and not getting the kill?
thorgold replied to Inception.'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Justification for murder is like Schrodinger's Cat - you only know what it is until you observe it. 1. Did they stay in the server and die? You killed them for loot. 2. Did they server hop like a bitch? You killed them for being a server-hopping bitch. -

Didn't you hear? Martians were added in the latest beta patch for Battleye. They operate like the police in "Minority Report" - they preemptively kill people whose noobish tendencies will lead to hacking in the future. In fact, that's why a lot of the servers are bugging up with the latest beta, they're running into positive feedback from paradoxes.
