MY balpark values when i was designing a game with realistic movements was: Forward=100% speed Backward=50% speed Sidesteps=75% speed Sprint: only forward Diagonal steps: speed clamped to the slowest limit (75% for forward sidesteps, 50% for backward sidesteps). Strafing is to get in and out of cover, peeking and so on, it's somewhat useful for melee combat but not at the degree of "circling around" that occurs in most fps games. In the real world, "serpentine" maneuvers do not work.

I don't mind modding, i really don't but there is this constant, nagging group in every game that absolutely want to turn their favorite game into something else (sometimes no matter how far it is from the original game). And they insist that the devs of their favorite game have to pave the way for it. When i think modding in general, I'm thinking about UT2K3 mutators, tweaks to the core formula essentially. The work involved in total conversion mods is nothing short of amazing but one might wonder, "why did you pick that game in the first place if you are going to paint over it entirely?", today we have massively powerful game engines that even a child can use them to make something of their own (I'm looking at Unity3D here).

The thing people seems to draw conclusions of is that "eating human flesh is wrong, you get sick! science prove it!" The reality is that humans, like animals, carry diseases. Eating a human that is victim of Kuru will transmit it, obviously. But the mere act of eating human flesh doesn't cause the parasite to spontaneously appear like a godly punishment, it just happen to infect cannibalistic populations who will eat the brain of their deceased. Obviously the idea of unpunished cannibalism was bothering one of the designers or they did it to make this food source mostly useless unless you are desperate or stupid.
