  1. Hello all! So i've finaly bitten the bullet (lol), and got my hands on an Xbow and a few bolts. that plus my hunting gear (knife, hatchet & matches) mean its time to take to the wilds for a bit to hunt quietly and get good with my Xbow. Would like general tips from Xbow users plus answers to some specific questions: 1. I'm having difficulty retrieving rounds that havn't hit a zed. I lost one on the ground (missed a chicken!), and one on the inside wall of the hospital in electro after going in the window. i looked around and couldn't find it. I know not every bolt is returned (i heard you've got about 80% chance) but anyone had this problem? i've only got another 4 bolts so if i practice (on a tree?) without being able to reclaim them thats gonna get old fast.... 2. Where/how is best to train with it? My plan is to get in some woods and shoot a tree from increasing distances going for grouping and remembering where my bolts land coresponding to the optical position of the Xbow. thats how i learned to shoot recurve longbows anyways... will this work well in game? 3. just *how* silent is it? how close can zeds (or players) hear me? 4. I can oneshot kill a zed, how much damage will i do on a player? (not a PKer but self defense...) 5. PK tactics with the croossbow, any favs? 6. Where is the best places to find more bolts? Ok i'm all done!, thanks for your help guys!
  2. just wanna say the OP is very correct! Rocket has impressed so far and i say let him continue. On a side note this game would loose alot without the threat of PVP.

    Crossbow training

    Nice shot on the bandit bill! i couldn't manage that yet for sure! thats why i need to train. a quiver would be lovely, or some bolt clips. but to be honest i'll play corssbow even if they never get implamented... i love killing zeds with no agro... plus it fits my group configuraiton (i'll take point and drop zeds that absouletly must be dropped to reach the objective.
  4. Hey all, lots of talk about crossbow quivers and its not a bad idea at all. an alternative/adjunct to this would be adding a couple of bolt clips to the crossbow. My crossbow in real life has two so i can have one bolt readied and two clipped onto the crossbow for easy access. those who watch AMCs the walking dead will have seen a similar setup. Obviously i don't know how easy that would be to set up in Dayz programming wise, but its still an idea. It would even allow you make quivers rarer and hold more bolts, since most xbow users could have 3 bolts more or less readied. thoughts?
  5. I know there are similar posts about bandit NPCs but this is *slightly* different. It could potentially add something to the game to spawn on a semi-random basis a "sniper's nest" at points within the larger towns/cities in the game world. I say semi random because it could be random chance influenced by aggro. I know what you're thinking "hell! don't i get shot at enough???" hear me out XD PC snipers in day z are mostly after players, not zeds right? So the chance of spawning a sniper's nest could be heavily increased by actions that give away your position and potentially would make you a saucy target for our real snipers (for example frieing a makarov makes a small increase, an m1911a1 larger increase, an M16 a LARGE increase). However with the chance always being random/low you could still get away with it for the most part. Give these snipers a limited range of fire (they face one way for the most part and have poor hearing since they are focused on sniping). and a low first shot accuracy (so you dont just get capped from no where.). and this could potentially add somthing to your electro/cherno crawl experience. Additionally they might occasionally deliver a bit of poetic justice to a player-killer XD, not that i'm against PKing! :) thoughts? Oh forgot to say the sniper would of course have a gun of intresst, some ammo and other loot worth having if you can get to his nest. Ofcourse his weapon is gonna aggro some zeds...

    Suggestion : Sniper NPCs

    i'm more than open to the idea that it could be a bad idea. and you both have some valid points raised. Sandy State - I already think twice before pulling out shotty and blasting that guy with the pack i really want. once for zeds and once for wether or not i'll be a dick lol. The idea that the loud noise of a valuable shotgun might spawn a sniper would add a thrid even when i'm realitively sure there's no other players around. this would add alot especialy on quiet servers (possibly th enumber of players on a server could also influence the spawn chance). So i guess thats what i think it would add over player snipers. You are right though there would be considerable redundency and so it could be a bad idea overall. Zeromentor - in my origional post i suggested giving them a low first shot accuracy, that combined with a bolt action rifle should give players the option of escaping. Ofcourse if they decide to go for the sniper's gear then they have their work cut out for them. also with the spawn perameters i suggested i think they are much more likely to be spawned against those with the loudest weapons, these are generally players looking to damage other players in my (albeit) limited experience. Additionally i'd have imagined keeping the probility cap low (maybe a maximum of 10% per shot for repeatedly fireing a loud sniperrifle in a city on a quiet server without relocating). so for the most part if you play carefully you'd get away with things as usual. still valid points, it may well be a bad idea XD

    The bandits are great thread!

    Yeah I hate bandits... the other day i finally go the crossbow i wanna learn how to use and BAMB sniper shot through a window while i was starring at it in glee. I love bandits... today when i was sneaking around electro having just found a new crossbow and there were few zeds around i was TENSE cause i'd heard a sniper shot a few mins ago. I love to hate bandits. as much as i swear when they kill me. I'm glad you guys are here just please let me play with my Xbow? :P
