Is it uncommon to find 3 AKM's in a fire station?
Redshift replied to shypatrick's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
On top of what the others have said I believe that the RNG gets stuck sometimes. It is not uncommon to run into a church and find 6 maps, or 4 alice packs in a grocery store. Ran into a fire-station outside of Electro once and found 3 M16/m203's. -
Us 884 the guy who shot me out of my car south of Karsnostav
Redshift replied to Redshift's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Ive thought about running FRAPS or something like it, but always end up being too lazy to set it up. *sniff* I do miss my m14 though. -
Are Crashed Helis A Bit Borked?

Wait.... you find heli crash sites that aren't already completely looted? Wish I knew what that was like ;D -
The iterated prisoners dilemma and the Day Z experiment
Redshift replied to Flatline's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
This would just encourage people to suicide over and over again until they get the rare item they want. This is assuming it is some form of equipment. Personally I think this type of thing would be neat. I like the idea of a personal backstory, and connection to the character. Which probably stems from the years I spent playing table top and chatroom based rpgs (You cant help but become connected to a character you have been roleplaying for 4 years). But the truth of it is this won't affect most people. The majority of players will simply ignore this as being irrelevant to the game, and never bother to notice it, much less become connected to it. And yes I notice that I am not offering up any counter proposals. This is because I can't think of a way that will work without breaking something else, and making a worse problem than what we are trying to fix. -
Compass. After respawning I would trade pretty much any weapon I find for a compass, because it seems like there are lives where you just can't find one; and to me it is the most useful bit of kit to have. I play with two buddies so being able to coordinate and meet up is made much easier with one. If you play solo it may not be as necessary.

Why did the M1911 and Revolver get nerfed?
Redshift replied to spankimus's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
From what I have read it is a bug related to the most recent Steam update to ARMA2. It does not seem to affect people who have the retail version and zero connection to Steam. Hopefully it will be fixed soon. -
The iterated prisoners dilemma and the Day Z experiment
Redshift replied to Flatline's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Obviously the prisoners dilemma is simplistic, it is the most basic example of game theory. It is the example that is taught day 1 in classes dealing with game theory, That doesn't mean that there is no validity to it, only that you have to take into consideration it's limitations. The problem with this is that it does the opposite of encouraging cooperation, it encourages griefing. A griefer gets off to making other people miserable, plain and simple. So if they kill someone and that person has to start over and work a few hours to get back to where they were previously, then the griefer is happy. However, if that person now has to be locked out of playing for x amount of time before starting that process, then the griefer is even happier. If the griefer can increase the amount of time and frustration caused to the first player by killing him repeatedly, then the griefer becomes ecstatic. If we ignore griefers and look at normal players it still fosters "betrayal" over "cooperation", because there is an even larger penalty for being betrayed if you attempt to cooperate. For a Prisoners Dilemma example it would be the difference between: -If you cooperate and the other player betrays, you go to jail for 1 day and he goes free. and -If you cooperate and the other player betrays, you go to jail for 5 years and he goes free. The increased penalty only strengthens the incentive to betray. -
There are jets and aeroplanes
Redshift replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
It really wouldnt fit the feel of DayZ. There is another Zombie mod based on ARMA2 that is more of an "action fps" that has all of the vehicles like jets, tanks, ect in it. DayZ is less action oriented and more survival oriented. -
The authorization server thing appears to be what my issue was. I am able to get back into the game this morning, but was not last night. So my issue was not really an issue. No Elysium was not the other clan. I can't remember what it was, but it was a three letter acronym inside [brackets]. I know that is not descriptive, but we aren't trying to call anyone out on anything so it doesn't really matter. The person who killed them may have just been server hopping anyway and not related to any of the clans in the server. It was very strange because both Blue and Green said the gunfire was very very loud, and yet within the same building I could not hear it. The person never came down the stairs from the top of the control tower either (I was aimed on and watching the stairs once I saw their names come across as killed), at least not for the minute or two I waited before backing out to the lobby. It is always possible there was some type of coincidental failure on Blue's computer, but the timing is odd (though I suppose that is part of the definition of "coincidence"). But I have no trouble believing that a real hacker (not one of the script kiddies) could have attacked him. As for "porn virus" Blue is almost irritatingly one of the only guys I know who doesnt download porn, seriously Ive snooped through his computer in the past trying to find something and he just doesnt do it. Thats not to say malware couldn't come from some other source. In the end I think he is just trying to let people know what happened, and to be wary, and possibly get some input from people on how to fix/prevent it from happening again.

I havent hard that one. But I have been hearing what is very distinctly the neighing of a horse when I walk around the woods. Very creepy.
-
I don't mean to be rude but.... are you on crack? Most of the hackers have been gotten rid of? The massive number of server nukes, player teleports, players being turned into animals, npc's spawned in, non-legit weapons, heli's flying around servers (when they are currently disabled), cities being set on fire, battleships being dropped from the air, ect seem to say otherwise. And secondly hackers will always be a problem even in a standalone version, this is obvious because hackers are ALWAYS a problem in multiplayer games, especially FPS's. Personally I would like the "X killed by Y" messages. It doesn't hurt bandits or pvp at all, but can help you identify people who abort out after you kill them to make their bodies disappear. This is a problem with nameplates not a server message saying you killed someone. Besides, if this person is close enough to see your nameplate then they heard your rifle firing and will be scanning anyway.

A while back there were bans for people using hacked weapons that they picked up off of other players (or so they claimed, I can not of course validate thee claims). While BattleEye wont ban you for this, you can be banned from the dayz hive which is a separate entity. If I were you I would get rid of it asap, and save the link to this thread somewhere. Just in case a hive ban is issues later (they seem to be done in batches, as opposed to happening regularly when something occurs) you can link to this thread to try and support your ban-appeal.

DON'T LET STEAM UPDATE OA!! Game breaking!
Redshift replied to happylarry77's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Worked fine for me and another buddy of mine, but my second buddy is getting "wrong signature" errors when he tries to get on a server. Can't figure out how to fix it. -
Thats neat. I don't see anything like a ski mask either. The "delta glasses" are ski goggles, not a ski mask; distinct difference. I really wish there was a bandana you could wear over your face or on your head. Would love to have a good way for my group to easily distinguish each other from the rest. Are there ever any issues of conflicts using this type of changes?

bandits , survivors, and other. which are you and what is your play style for PVP
Redshift replied to picky (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Well that is your opinion. I play as an opportunistic bandit. I don't really hunt people and never camp for other players, but if I come across someone while playing I will fire on them unless I can see some tangible reason not to. -
*whew* that was a close one!!
Redshift replied to StoneColdSteve's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
One thumb up. It would have been two, but I laughed so hard I shot the other one off on accident. -
Solo play is perfectly valid and doable, it just comes with a set of downsides. But playing with others comes with it's own downsides to. I played solo for a long time before I could convince my friends to buy the game and I did well for myself. I could raid towns, loot military buildings, and sneak around to keep myself provisioned with relative ease. Played on my own schedule without having to worry about where anyone else logged out. And while I do not consider myself a bandit I won mulitple pvp engagements even against more than one attacker. In fact my longest lived character (18 days, playing at least 4 hours most days) only died because I was showing my friend around the game when he finally bought it, I ended up going somewhere I wouldnt have otherwise and we both got sniped. On the other hand my two best IRL friends now play with me, and my overall enjoyment level of the game has gone up dramatically. We are able to coordinate, and plan our actions based around everyone's current loadout/specialties and cover each other very well. But if I want to play when they are not on it gets to be a pain. I have to find them again and group back up, if someone dies we spend a good portion of a night finding them and re-gearing. Server desyncs really become a pain in the ass in a group setting, where as you can more or less ignore them if you play solo. I have to report you to the Bureau of Morality for this. This is just unacceptable.

Most of the time I don't bother hiding bodies. It takes time, and if I've gotten into a firefight I want out of the area as quickly as possible. Too often people get themselves killed because they linger over a players body instead of just moving along.
-
My understanding is that if someone aborts out (or alt F4) after they die but before respawning then their body will disappear. It's kind of like combat logging but they are already dead, you get the murder count but they are robbing you of their loot. It has happened to me on occasion as well. I do not believe that you can loot skins that someone is wearing, only it if it currently in their inventory.

That just seems like good fun. As for the admin whispering it is something that happens on my groups main server from time to time also. The admin will whisper to me asking about the servers stability and lag. I guess he has noticed that we are on a good bit and that we try to give accurate feedback to him, and we appreciate his trying to keep on top of the server issues. I just wish there was a way to reply to him more... covertly. I have been assuming I have to reply in direct chat (because he has replied to my statements in it), which broadcasts that I am in the area if others are near also. Does anyone know if I can instead use vehicle of group chat and still be heard by the admin?
-
I have noticed that in the past week there has been a huge uptick in the amount of what I call rubberband lag. Where you can still move but everything else stops and runs in place, then 15-30 seconds later everything comes back into sync but will be where it moved to. It seems to be endemic no matter what server I am on even if the server resets to try and clear it up. Is this something that others are noticing as well? I don't believe it is a client side issue because it effect myself and my two friends I play with at the exact same times. My group has been very annoyed by it and its causing problems both with co-ordination and other aspects of gameplay. I dont seem to remember this being a problem before, but it is becoming one.
