Bug: Lost in the middle of nowhere.
fluffyville replied to Mishra's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Keep running SE. Apparently it's a good 30-35KM slog when you spawn way out there in the hills so hopefully you have enough food and drink to get you there. -

When will the new update come?
fluffyville replied to Henyo10's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yeah that patch post was for last Monday. Rocket has said that he doesn't want to rush future patches after issues that came with the 1.7.1. patch. I prefer to regard patches with the same mentality I do with buses. It might be late but it'll get here eventually. -
I had to crawl all the way from Novy Sobor to Berezino once after a similarly unpleasant decided to break one of my legs. It took well over an hour to make the journey, not exactly sure how long as I was stoned and not really paying attention to the time. When I finally made it I tried to shoot out the hospital windows but it seems in light of the zombie apocalypse the hospital had installed toughened safety glass and it wouldn't break. Of course zombies heard my shots and promptly came to investigate and you can pretty much work out what happened next. This was before I learned that there were supplies on the roof and climbing ladders isn't really a big problem while sporting a broken leg or two, I haven't tried climbing a ladder with broken bones but I'm told that the game will let you do it. I've also since learned that throwing a tin can at the windows works way better than shooting at the windows. Not really sure why that is, could just be a quirk of the engine or a bug with the window, I don't know. I'd say go for it, make the journey. Hopefully by the time you reach a hospital it'll be night time and with any luck a lot less players to avoid.

Died of dehydration... in the rain.
fluffyville replied to TheFunkyJesus's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
dying of dehydration in the rain, hehe that sucks. On Bezki's suggestion of drinking directly from ponds, I'd say no. Water pumps sure, but not ponds. Would you really want to drink from a stagnant pond? I'd like it if there were sterilization tablets in game so when you fill up a canteen at a pond you *have* to use a tablet before you can drink it. Pumps would be free of any nasties in the water but ponds that are essentially watering holes for the local wildlife could contain anything. Hence the need for the tablets. Of course there would need to be some UI change to indicate which canteen was filled with clean/purified water and which canteen needs purifying. That's my suggestion for a little added realism. -
You don't save, the server saves for you. When you're done playing just hit Escape then Abort, you'll carry on from that moment when you next reconnect. Hold or double tap shift to increase/decrease your speed, works in all stances. Double tapping toggles. There's a major key binds list in the helpful threads sticky at the top of this section along with loads of other links to guides that'll help you with further questions. Everything other keybind not listed in there can be found in your control options in game. The servers should be the same ones although I can't say for sure as I don't use the Six Launcher. I fired it up once, took one look at that confusing mess and promptly closed it. I use the Arma II launcher that can be found on the armaholics website to launch everything and then use the ingame multiplayer button to find a server.

Head away from the larger cities at first, unless you're playing under the cover of darkness on a low pop server. Getting a loot map will probably help you out no end too. Once you're out of the cities and away from imminent danger, head to farm buildings, barns and deer stands. That should get you started, once you have some means of defense (don't be too eager to shoot, loud bangs = dinner bell) you can head into some of the smaller towns and start looting houses and such like. From there well, that's really up to you. As for seeing in the dark, you do spawn with a flashlight, you'll need to equip it by right clicking it in your inventory and it'll end up in your secondary weapon slot, provided you don't have a weapon there already. If you do then put the weapon in your bad and then equip the flashlight. To turn it on it's the L key. There are also chemlights in 3 different colours that radiate light to different levels depending on which one you use, red gives of the lowest level of light and I think blue gives of the maximum with green floating somewhere in between. You can also pick up road flares and spark those off. Chemlights and flares are thrown but they can be picked back up again however running with a flare may or may not be a smart idea as you do light yourself up quite well, zombies are also attracted to light sources, especially flairs. I think they like the fizzing noise. flairs and chemlights can be extinguished too if you need to hide in darkness in a hurry. You can also turn the HDR setting all the way up and play around with your gamma settings, both of these are under the advanced video options. I'm not too keep on messing with gamma as night time is supposed to be dark and artificially messing with the darkness kinda takes the immersion away. Once you get yourself equipped with a compass, orientated and you know more or less where you are, not being able to see in the dark isn't really that much of an issue. Of course once you get into or even close to a town you can loose off a flair or two to distract the zombies for a few minutes and also light up the loot. But don't hang around as opportunistic players may see your flair and come and steal your beans! As for advertising yourself to other players, do so at your own risk. joining a group and teaming up with them for ops might not be a bad idea. Teaming with some random survivor could be great but equally it could go pair shaped very quickly. Hope that helps you out a little, enjoy :p

How to install DayZ for those looking it
fluffyville replied to Genki Dama's topic in New Player Discussion
You know there's a guide for installation in the useful threads sticky at the top of this section right? Directing noobs to that sticky would probably be a better idea in the long run at it links to threads that will answer the 50 or so questions noobs will still have on completing the installation. -
dayz is losing its meaning
fluffyville replied to VictorStagnetti's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Past it's prime? It's still in Alpha. At this stage in the game's life expect things to be broken, that's what the Alpha stage is all about, breaking things and pushing things to the limits, rolling out new stuff and seeing what people do with it. Like the barbed wire spammage, yes sure it's annoying but if players didn't do stupid things with it now then Rocket and the rest of the team wouldn't know that there's a problem with it. If you hate the barbed wire now, think of all the fun you're going to have with bear traps. I can already smell your rage you'll have when you denied access to a building with cool loot because someone placed 30 bear traps in the door ways. But that again is what Alpha is for, deal with it or take a break for now and come back in the Beta stage. -
THIS GAME IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR NOOBS
fluffyville replied to JERRY220's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
You really do need to chill out a smidge, I've only been playing for like two weeks or so, I joined right after the update that took away the starter weapon and inadvertently zombies have super senses. Yes it was tough and I died lots, most through my own mistakes but a few times due to bugs and glitches, but I'm still here. The mod is still in it's alpha stage so yeah there are some horrifically frustrating bugs to do with zombies hitting through walls but those will get patched out in time. The simple tools you need to have to understanding and surviving this mod are patience, willingness to experiment, trial and error, patience (yeah I know, I mentioned that already, but you really do need lots of patience) and a realization for the fact that you will die lots, repeatedly, over and over and over again. Don't get attached to your gear because you won't be holding on to it for very long when you're a noob. This mod is harsh, brutal and unforgiving. The same could be said for a large chuck of the player base too. The learning curve is so steep it's practically vertical but it is far from impossible but only if you are willing to accept that it is an alpha that requires a lot of time and effort and plenty of respawns before you get to a point where you're able to survive. I really don't want to use that cliched and over used term "Maybe this isn't the game for you" but if the bugs and difficult gameplay machanics are getting to you then maybe this isn't the game for you right now given it's current state. If you're at that stage where you just want to launch your monitor out the window then take a break, check back periodically and see if those buggy zombie mechanics have been fixed. But if you are willing to stick with it then I'd suggest that you don't add another rage post, start reading the guides posted in the new survivors section, get a map (there's one linked in a reply to your last rage post) learn how to deal with zombies (running into a building isn't the only way to ditch the zombie train) and maybe even think about joining a group of players that are willing to take you under their wing and show you what's what, what to do, what not to do and where all the cool stuff is. tl;dr, lazy bum, read the damn post or GTFO! -
Is it hard to find a gun in 1.7.1.5?
fluffyville replied to vanden1989's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Heading into electro or Cherno during the day when the servers are populated isn't a good idea, unless you have some weird fetish for getting killed a lot. Heading to those places in the dead of night when people are generally too scared to play is a totally different story. I was in Cherno for a good 30 to 45 minutes last night. I got a camo suit, a main weapon, a side arm, a 16 slot bag, tons of ammo, food, water and medical supplies. I also got nearly all the basic tools, map, compass, watch and matches and got the hatchet soon after I left Cherno and headed north. All that and I didn't get shot at once. I managed to loot every single major building there is in cherno with the exception of the firehouse as some noob had sealed it off with barbed wire and the hospital as I'd already raided the medical tents. You might or rather you *will* have to alter your looting strategies depending on when time of day (server time that is) and how populated the server is but it can easily be done. Patience and not being afraid of the dark is the key to looting those big cities, which is probably why all those COD playing death match kiddies play during the day :p -

Is it hard to find a gun in 1.7.1.5?
fluffyville replied to vanden1989's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
It might be tough to find weapons if you're new to the game but once you've played for a few days you'll get to know what sort of weapon spawns where. What can be tricky sometimes is finding the right starter weapon for you. If you're looting barns and farms then you might have to settle for a Lee Enfield and run with that for a while, resisting the urge to actually use it unless it's absolutely necessary until you come across a Winchester 1866 or something better. @ vanden1989 Head up to the New Player Discussion section and check out the Index of helpful threads post. It has a load of useful guides including a video tutorial on installing DayZ. If you're just upgrading from an earlier version of DayZ then download the update and unpack the contents into your existing @dayz folder overwriting the current contents. -
This should help you Installation Guide (video). This video and other helpful guide can be found in the Index of useful threads sticky of the New player discussion section.

How good of a connection do you need to run this?
fluffyville replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Low population servers soon become high population servers very quickly but you should be fine with that line speed provided BT doesn't rate limit you and dump you down to 56K speeds. They did that to me on my supposedly unlimited business connection that I was paying double the price for. Bastards! The only problem I can think of (that is assuming I'm correctly understanding the way DayZ works) would be if you aggro shit loads of zombies. When you aggro them, your CPU takes over the zombie handling from the server you are connected to, meaning that your line will be sending out lots of info on zombie like position, direction, speed and actions. So things (zombies) might get a little squirrelly for other players near you and zombies may appear to teleport short distances. Again, this is assuming that I have a correct understanding of the way DayZ servers handle zombies, I could easily be wrong and if I am I'm sure someone else will correct and scold me here. -
Disconnecting Immediately After Spawning To Avoid Imminent Death
fluffyville replied to -Cdn-Chard's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Question 1: Is disconnecting immediately after logging in under these circumstances considered a cheat on par with DC'ing under fire? I would say yes, it's a cheat. You chose that server and that moment in time to log in so you should live (or die) with the consequences. Question 2: Given that a proposed 15 second, 30 second, 1 minute disconnect freeze will very likely result in the player's, is this an acceptable price to pay to address DC'ers? Perfectly acceptable. Question 3: Should we/can we start the disconnect freeze counter after, say, 10 seconds of being on a server? Enough time to look around, but not enough time to loot or take offensive action. No. this would kinda negate the point of having a disconnect freeze in the first place. Question 4: What if a player logs into a server where the framerate was so bad (8fps or less) that it's completely unplayable that they had to disconnect right away, within the 10 second window. Should players be forced to expose themselves during a disconnect countdown for a game based performance issue like that? Yes, choose a server you've played on before and that you know you get good results from. If you're one of those that just picks a random server then make sure that you and the server you're about to join are both running the latest Beta version and the latest release of DayZ. If you're all singing from the same hymn sheet, you're less likely to get some quirky FPS issue. No flames intended here but if you DC to avoid death or injury for any reason then quite frankly you are cheating and deserve to be spanked in some fashion for it. The only exceptions I can think of right now are DC'ing due to quirky FPS issues, there isn't really much you can do there but DC and try another server. The other exception would be to DC to avoid a hacker, there's a recent thread here somewhere where the OP said he DC'ed to avoid getting blown up by a tank! In all fairness DC'ing to avoid a hacker sounds like a reasonable justification to me. -
You don't actually have to buy Arma II, you can grab the free version from BIS. You will have to buy the Operation Arrowhead game and use that in conjunction with Arma II free to get the Combined Operations Lite. Going this route is cheaper that getting the CO pack, even with the current deal of 25% off, however doing it this way will give you lower quality textures and no single player campaign that would normally ship with the full version of Arma II.

Bugs, specifically zombies hitting me through walls or actually pulling me back through a wall in one case. Followed by Zombies in general, mainly while I'm trying to be sneaky and fail. Finally players, or player rather as I've only been killed once so far by another player, no idea if it was a bandit or just some panicky survivor thinking that I'm out to steal his beans.

An alternative for those with no mic or like me, no real ability to effectively use one, lower your weapon while you type. Granted that might not help in every situation as clearly some people in game, and indeed this thread, will simply shit their pants on seeing their own shadow let alone another person. But a weapon not pointed at someones head could be a good indicator that you have no hostile intentions. So to all those that have a steady trickle/stream/flood of urine running down your leg whenever you see someone, have a little patience, you might very well be about to kill a person who might, just might be willing to tag alone with you and help you survive.

I made the following post on another forum for people who have not even heard of ARMA II or DayZ, to try and entice them to join me in in this fantastic mod. I hope you'll bare with some of the noob explanations __________________ I just spent most of the day roaming around, looting what I could where I could. Starting in Cherno I grabbed a few bits, some basic medical supplies and a small sidearm and a few other bits and bobs to get me on my way. As staying in Cherno is normally a bad idea I decided to head north through the hills. Snaking my way ever northward from farm to house to barn, grabbing whatever I could find. Had a close call in a factory north of Dolina when the zombies stopped paying attention to the flairs I was lobbing around as a distraction. I'd looted all but one building when they spotted me and then they all started chasing me. So I make a dash for the gate and head north east up a hill with a small to medium sized zombie train following me but I managed to loose most of them in the hills. All but two of them, but two is reasonably manageable in open ground and I had a Double Barreled shotgun by this time so I drop them, not before they manage to catch me though and take a couple of swipes at me knocking my blood levels down to 8000-ish. But I count myself lucky as they can easily break one of your legs when your blood levels are below 8000 or 9000, and as I didn't have any morphine on me (morphine magically heals broken bones, it really is that awesome) to heal myself I count my blessings and head to the nearest hospital a little further north east. I eventually arrived in Berezino, one of the northern coastal cities. I sneak past armies of zombies, looting the hospital for morphine, two supermarkets, one of which had a tent (handy for storing stuff provided no other bugger finds it) and 3 apartment buildings. While on the roof of the final apartment building I spot some military tents, probably a good place to pick up some military specced hardware. So I head back down the stairs and out over the fields towards the tents when suddenly I start taking fire, lots of fire. Right away I head for the nearest cover, looking over my shoulder while I'm running. I see another survivor, on the roof of the building I just left, and he's pissing bullets in my direction. I get to cover but take one in the leg and getting a break in the process as well. So there I am, in a hedge. Bullets hitting the ground all around me and I know that eventually he's going to put one right through the hedge I'm in, ending all my hard work. I have no chance of hitting him with my shotgun but I fire off both barrels at him anyway. He ducks for cover giving me a brief moment of lead free peace. But those two shots fired effectively rang the dinner bell, so to speak, and the horde starts piling in. At this point my screen is shaking as my character is in pain, the colour is fading from my screen as I'm loosing blood fast. My heart is pounding in my chest and I'm physically shaking too. Thinking that this is the end of my adventure I switch to my revolver to make my last stand in the hedge, hoping at least to take a couple of them with me and make the rest work for their meal. Somehow I manage to drop them all and just as the last one goes down I see my attacker run right off the top of the building he was perched on. I've no clue how it happened. Could be that he had a keyboard screw up or that he lagged out, maybe he was trying to reposition himself on the roof and wasn't paying attention to where the edge of the building was. Who knows? I certainly didn't and I almost couldn't believe what I was seeing. But sure enough, as he hits the floor I see "Spectre was killed" flash up on my screen. I take a quick look around, no more of the hungry horde headed my way. So I hurriedly bandage myself to stop the bleeding at around 2500, gobble down some painkillers to stop my screen from shaking, dope myself up on magic morphine and leg it over to my attacker's broken corpse. He has, or rather had, an MP5 with two and a bit clips remaining, more bandages and morphine, some cooked meats. I loot the lot leaving only his sidearm and it's ammo. run back into the building he just "lemming'ed" off, wolfed down the freshly looted cooked meats, which takes my blood back up to 5000-ish and the colour starts to come back to my screen. As far as I know, players respawn anywhere along the coast and given that I'd already been extremely lucky already I decide to not take any more chances, that guy could have respawned only a couple of hundred meters away from me and could be hot-footing it back my way while I was looting his corpse. So I bug out heading west, ignoring stealth in favor of speed I head to the nearest tree line and duck into the woods. I don't stop running for a good 5 minutes but when I do stop I realize I hadn't been paying attention to my map and I'm now totally lost, deep in the woods. But that's OK, if I don't know where I am, chances are no one else does either, so I go prone in a bush to take a break. My heart is still racing and my hands are still trembling so it took me a few minutes longer than normal to roll a cigarette. Just as I'm lighting my dodgy looking roll up I see "Spectre was killed" popping up on my screen again and I laugh and laugh! I've no idea how he got killed, could be that another player got him or that he got careless around the horde, but either way seeing that white death text again made me grin from ear to ear. I spent the better part of the next two hours roaming through the woods, crossing unknown roads, looting random houses and barns and also quite a lot of running from several aggro'd zombie mobs. I sacrificed a Wild Boar and a sheep in thanks to whatever deity was watching my back in Berezino, their meat came in handy too taking my blood levels back up to 11,000-ish. When I do eventually figure out where I am, I'm over 3KM away from my lucky escape and just as I start to get my bearings, a notice pops up saying the server is going down for a restart. But that's ok, I'm safe in a Deer Stand about 1KM east of Grishino, nearly at full health, with a backpack full of food, drink and medical supplies and my new toy liberated from my attacker. I have never in all my life, ever had a gaming experience quite like today. No Boss battle or multiplayer game I have ever played has even come close to actually making my heart race and my hands tremble quite like that near death experience in DayZ today, they were still trembling a little two hours after the event while I was recounting my adventures to good friend in another game. If you don't already own ARMA II (or the free version) and it's stand alone DLC Operation Arrowhead then go get them. Get them now! You will get killed a lot and you will get very frustrated at times, but one day you'll have a day like I did today, and when you do you'll be thankful you made that small investment to get this mod. __________________ So there is is, I hope you all enjoyed reading about my little adventure. It ended the following day on a low pop server during the middle of the night due to a bad choice in firing a very, very loud weapon in the NW Airfield. But you live and learn from your mistakes, or in this game you die and learn hopefully. Thank you Rocket and whoever else is/was involved in the making of this Mod. I've had so much fun and hope I'll continue to do so as the mod progresses through it's Alpha stage.

Found my first downed helicopter today, as I'm loot a DMR+Mags from it I notice another plume of smoke in the distance (both already been added to the map), got loads of medical supplies from the second one, and another one 30 minutes later in the NW Airfield on the SE tip of the Airfield, just inside the wall. Got my first silenced weapon in the game from the third chopper. Seems downed choppers are like buses, wait for ages and then three turn up at the same time.

It's Post Process and it's under the Advanced button on your Video Options menu. Kill it! Kill it with fire! Or just turn it off, either way it should solve your issue.

I only just got the mod to work yesterday evening and the removal of the chat might end my experience in DayZ before it's really begun. I'd love to be able to use some form, any form of voice over IP but sadly it's impossible for me. I'm deaf so incoming voice communications are worthless to me, and while I can speak, it's very difficult for people I know and converse with every day in the real world to understand me let alone some random gamer on a voice over IP program. I'm all for the game being uber hard and super realistic but some concessions have to be made for the fact that it is a computer game.
