I'm currently using the Creative SoundBlasterX ZxR. It works like magic and you can customize and balance pretty much anything you need there. For example, I don't like using headphones - never got comfortable wearing something in my ear or on my head, so I'm using a sound bar for audio output and a Lavalier mic for the input. With the right balancing, I've set it up in such a way that the mic doesn't pick up the game audio at all, even though I can hear it clearly.
So yeah, my recommendation is Creative SoundBlasterX ZxR as the one from personal experience. Can't really tell much about buying a mic - I have mine for work and it's quite expensive to be bought just for gaming.
