"Improvements" Yeah it is noticeable all right. Looks like crap, utter crap. It's like you have a magic and invisible blue chemlight over your head. Bright textures glow far too much, some of them even with colour, making it extremely unrealistic. If they are set on keeping this "night light" they will have to tweak it a lot. Range cannot be longer than arm's length (if you want to see more you need to be forced to use a light source), it has to be monochrome, and the radiance needs to be toned town to be just faintly visible. Walking inside a house at night now is like being in a fairground funhouse with UV lights all over the place. Utterly unnatural and ugly. And trees in the forests... ugh. The improvement they need to do on night lighting is making the moon and stars provide ambient light at night, with shadows, so only on nights with heavy clouds will you get the ultra darkness. As for the duration of nights I believe there are official servers with different acceleration, at least there used to be. Personally I think accelerated nights is bollocks, they are to be survived, not skipped. But for those who hate them and would rather just run and gun in daylight, there is a plethora of servers out there with short or nonexistent nights.

Zombie placement throughout the map are way too similar.
Derleth replied to repzaj1234's topic in Suggestions
I'm playing on a server with 3x the amount of zeds and it is having zero performance issues, so the zed-related performance problems a few patches back seem to be taken care of. And yes, larger towns and military zones are downright nasty. Once you ring the dinnerbell you better find an easily defended position and have lots of ammo... -
I believe this is a planned feature in the backlog, so it will come at some point. Same with some other animals, such as rabbits and foxes. I'd also like to see packs of rabid dogs roaming around towns hounding (har har) players and livestock alike. And horses. Where the fudge are all the horses?

The price of cannibalism. As far as I know it cannot - and should not - be disabled. Eating people is possible in the game yes, but don't expect it to be without consequences. There is a cure however - F11 😉 I only ever resorted to cannibalism once, during that 0.63 exp/stress test build where opening cans was entirely broken, no fruit or mushrooms spawned and the only animals spawning were chickens. So there wasn't much else left to eat apart from other players, and they hadn't started slowing metabolism down yet either. Not so many friendly encounters that patch...

Restarting to a BLACK / Blank SCREEN??
Derleth replied to XFileGunner88's topic in New Player Discussion
I've had that happen once. I just restarted the game, no need to reinstall... -
PLEASE reverse the NEW "Client Side Personal Night Light"
Derleth replied to 0.64 Freerider's topic in General Discussion
I hope you are right, I really hope so. I uploaded a short video to illustrate just how bad it looks with the glowing trees (and breath fog, although that was supposedly fixed...). -
Look around on that subforum, lots of useful tips there. To make a dedicated server visible in the server browser you need to need to do some port forwarding in your firewall.

PLEASE reverse the NEW "Client Side Personal Night Light"
Derleth replied to 0.64 Freerider's topic in General Discussion
This feature is an extremely poor attempt to appease the "NIGHT IS TOO DARK!!!" crowd. Instead of fixing the moon (which if you haven't noticed has not shed any light whatsoever since Beta, it is now just a flat texture on the skybox) they come up with this artificial magic "personal night light" nonsense. It has me triggered like nothing else previously in this game's development. I just can't believe they implemented such a fundamentally flawed and poorly conceived feature. It needs to go and it needs to go BEFORE this patch is pushed to stable. I wrote a more detailed post in the Experimental patch thread: -
I remember a couple of storms during 0.63 stress testing, so it should be possible to activate. Could it just be a seasonal thing? Thunder usually doesn't happen this time of year, so maybe it is just off the weather table until later in the spring? Shouldn't affect servers where time is set to summer months though, so I have a feeling it is more than that. Last time I played Arma3 I nearly fell off my chair when a thunderstorm rolled in...

Getting rescued from KOS:ers by angry infected are some of my favourite kinds of moments in DayZ. First time it happened I laughed so hard I almost aggroed the horde once they were done with the shooter. In Elektro by the square, I was searching the school when I met a guy in the downstairs corridor. Lifted my hand in greeting, he went for his SKS but I managed to duck through a door before he fired, then about a dozen infected swarmed him from all directions. Him shooting infected and screaming "U FU*ING COWARD COME AND FIGHT!!" then running out of ammo and dying. Gods I loved that moment!

I just pasted in the link, and server logs confirmed I was actually killed by an infected. Investigation is ongoing, more players have been attacked by this evil bugger tonight...

One occasion caught on film 🙂

Thanks, I did that too in the end I just wasn't sure it was necessary.

Off topic but kinda related (noob question) when I try to run a dedicated server on a second computer, Steam kicks me out from my gaming rig. So, do I really need a separate Steam account for the dedicated server or am I doing something wrong?
-
Yeah, I was thinking along the lines of personal statistics for the player's personal enjoyment. Time alive, distance travelled and such things are what I'm most interested in, but I know many others would want kills etcetera.
-
To be fair, on hardcore(ish) servers I don't give a flying toss if I'm totally alone, when the game puts up enough of a fight that is what I focus on, player interactions becomes something of marginal interest. @Guy Smiley Glad to see that Dead by Dawn is back btw, will hop in later tonight. I've spent some time on OSG the last couple of days, among lots of loot fluff and other more or less unneeded mods they have tons of zeds and - first and foremost - reduced health and blood regeneration rates. This really turned the game around. He's still working on balancing loot, but the rich pickings didn't really matter since every scuffle with a zed sent my heart racing - because health was still yellow since my previous encounter. Pockets full of loot matters little when you've hidden in a shed with fifteen infected outside, screaming for your blood... In the Workshop I found a Hypo- and Hyperthermia mod that seems to be broken judging by the comments, but surely someone can make one that works? Hopefully the devs will get their act together soon and fix some of the survival issues, it's depressing when we need to look to mods to get a survival experience resembling what we had in 0.62. Below I list the stuff I would personally like to see fixed/added back before more guns and vehicles: Food poisoning Hypo- and hyperthermia (when fixing this I hope to gawd they fix rain coats etc too so they actually work...) Health and blood regeneration Fractures Bows As for "quests" I don't really care for scripted missions and whatnot, I came to DayZ for the sandbox, there are tons of other games out there telling stories. Here, I'm just trying to survive as long as possible. Which brings me to the only thing I want along these lines: Survivor statistics! I want to see statistics pertaining to the currently selected character - time alive, distance traveled, food eaten, weapons looted, rounds fired, infected killed, animals killed, players killed, players skinned, players bandaged, players restrained etcetera etcetera. Basically any action that can be counted. That would be fun to see, and upon death my next objective would be to survive longer than my current record.

Who actually build bases and repair cars?
Derleth replied to Evilsausage's topic in General Discussion
Sounds like exactly the kind of place I want, thanks! As for 1PP I've gotten used to it, I still prefer to be able to shift back and forth as I please but I don't get that claustrophobic sensation in 1PP anymore. -

You got me, I'll try it when I get back home, cross-atlantic ping bothers me not (been playing After Zero recently, but it is always full with a nasty queue when I try to hop on). Is it modded or can I join it as is? -
[Recipe] Steamed Stuffed Peppers
Derleth replied to Weyland Yutani (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
YES! Empty cans are in the game files, just not spawning at the moment. At least they were before 1.0 since I found several on Dwarden's experimental server he had up for a while (didn't get them when eating canned food, but found empty cans as loot here and there). So I'm assuming this will be a thing again at some point. And @Sqeezorz: I agree, drying stuff should be returned. I'm still not sure if it has been taken out on purpose or if the mechanic is just broken (heating anything in cooking pot without grease/water ruins it instantly instead of drying it). I've asked the devs a few times in different channels but never got a response. Also, boiling rice and mixing dry milk powder with water to get milk milk are things long overdue. Additional things like coffee, pasta, chocolate, crisps and indeed more advanced cooking are not necessary or critical at the moment, but having them in-game along with a slightly more advanced nutritional system system would go a long way to put the "S" back in survival. The way I see it, players should be able to survive solely on fallen fruit and canned food, but it should give less energy per unit consumed than "proper" food and make them more susceptible to disease than players eating a better balanced diet. That way, taking the time to cook food properly would have some form of reward. This would also increase the value of those multi-vitamin pills that are mostly a waste of space right now. -

'Mass's Many Items' has a stew. I haven't had opportunity to cook it yet, but it does show that modders can expand on cooking even though the devs themselves have no plans to do it. Awesome necro btw... -
But G36 isn't in Weapon Redux, that only has weapons already in the game files. G36C is in the DayZ Plus mod I think?
-
It was even in for testing at some point during 0.63 experimental wasn't it? Just one build and then removed again? I remember it being announced (with F being default button to smack someone/something with your firearm) but then I died when trying to test it... It would be nice if firearm melee would have a standard attack and a strong attack just as regular melee, so you could possibly knock your target back to give you space for either shooting or running.

Fair enough, thanks!

Good to see you commenting on this @ImpulZ! While we have your attention, would it be possible to enable client-side customisation of the size and font of server and chat message text? Also I would very very VERY much appreciate if the Hide HUD toggle would not also hide interaction messages! That makes it impractical or even impossible to perform certain actions with HUD disabled, since you cannot see the prompts for crafting, building, combining or any other action. I like to play the game without HUD, since I want my screen clean, but ever since beta that hasn't really been possible. So, pretty please with a cherry on top - make hiding interaction prompts a separate toggle from the HUD toggle!

why it makes new character when joining server
Derleth replied to desolace1's topic in General Discussion
Is it possible that you joined one of the servers tagged as "Experimental" that first time? Currently stable and experimental branches are equal, so you can play on both types of servers but experimental still has separate hives. So if you logged in on an experimental server the first time that character would be on the experimental hive, while the new one is on stable. There is also the slim possibility that the first character was killed just as you logged out.
