Have just trawled through this thread and it seems to me that it's the same old argument; My way is the right/best way! Everybody should play the game my way, because I'm right! Whether hardcore or carebear! I believe that there as many ways to play DayZ as there are players. What's fine/good for one isn't fine/good for another. Jeez! What a tightrope for the devs to walk. In defense of 3rd person view, I always understood it was an attempt to compensate for the inherent lack of peripheral vision in computer games. After all your FOV is limited by monitor size (and FOV) settings. First person is kinda like playing with a set of blinkers on... Pony games anybody? There is room for both? As other posters have suggested, if you don't like it, don't play that way. Equally, don't expect everybody else to restrict themselves, or be forced to restrict themselves to your style of play. It's about accessibility and giving as much choice as possible to as many players as possible to play the game in a way that suits them. You can call it an exploit or a game feature, it doesn't matter which. But the devs can only please some of the people some of the time. They can't please all of the people all of the time! I don't envy them.

To fix server hopping, or not to fix server hopping.

i think bear traps are a great idea as long as it isn't too easy to carry more than one or two of them at a time. if they take up multiple slots in the inventory it should dissuade people from trying to carry or use them too often. After all, Chernarus is obviously a country that enjoys it's country sports. Just look at all of the deer stands (and firearms) everywhere! And I have yet to see a single deer! Maybe they've been hunted to the verge of extinction in the local area? The same could apply to bears! Perhaps both animals could be added at a later stage?

To fix server hopping, or not to fix server hopping.

Perhaps you didn't read the messages suggesting characters being respawned on the beach again if they change server or being killed if they change server once too often. Both fairly obvious penalties I'd have thought? I've stated in other threads on exactly the same subject, that ghosting, dc'ing during PvP or zed aggro and loot farming are all pretty crappy. But tying your toon to a single server? Respawning on the beach if you move servers. C'mon, please get real. Servers aren't all reliable and not all server hoppers are scum. Stop trying to crack nuts with sledgehammers please? KISS. Keep It Simple Stupid!!! -
A suggested list for starting gear....... Mods, please read.
heretic (DayZ) replied to richard_b's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Please don't misunderstand me... I have no objections to starting as we do now. I've managed to do quite well as things are. I'm even happy to start without a pistol. I can find one. But there are some basics that wouldn't be out of place to equip a starting character and wouldn't change the starting game too significantly. -

Sorry folks, I forgot to add one other item... (incipient alzheimers warning :) A box of matches. (again readily available to most of us) Oh no... it's happened again.. A torch. Last one honestly. -

heretic (DayZ) replied to richard_b's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I think that if we're striving for some kind of realism in DayZ that there are some items that are reasonable to start with as they are readily available to most people from their own homes; A small backpack/bag (current one is fine) A watch (let's face it, most people have one) Painkillers (Aspirin, Ibuprofen etc.) A bandage or two ( don't you have a first aid box at home?) A drink (Water bottle, can of soda are all fine) An item of food (can of beans, pasta, pilchards, Franks & beans are all fine, or a new item could be simply "sandwich"!) And a knife (doesn't have to be a hunting knife, could simply be a kitchen knife. Again most people have access to these. But it should be capable of being used in some kind of melee) + A box of matches & A torch Just my tuppence worth. To the OP wouldn't this thread have been better placed in the Suggestions sub forum? -
To fix server hopping, or not to fix server hopping.
heretic (DayZ) replied to lherron's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Another thread rehashing the same arguments. Sorry folks, but there are loads of valid reasons to hop servers, this evening being a good example in my case. For those who are getting spawned in 30 seconds or less after connecting to a server, you're very lucky. I've just been to about a dozen servers attempting to get a daytime game after being kicked from the lobby of the one server I did manage to log onto earlier this evening, while I went to the loo in real life. Along with a number of other players I've chatted with this evening whilst being stuck at the waiting for character to create screen, a lot of people are struggling to find reliable servers and now you folk want to talk of imposing rules and restrictions that would penalise those players who are forced to server hop through no fault of their own. This seems to be as reprehensible as the malicious server hopping you all so despise. As in life, it's generally better to not allow the actions of the few to spoil things for the many. Until the server descriptions, time zones, versions and reliability are all addressed, server hopping is going to be a regular experience for a lot of players. And I can imagine that by the time DayZ is ready for a retail release, many players will have even less patience with punitive restrictions on a game that they will have paid for. -
Cross-server inventory and location preservation is a mistake.
heretic (DayZ) replied to jafit's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Another thought that may be relevant. This game is in Alpha now, by the time it's a retail stand-alone game, do you think that people who end up paying money to play are going to be willing to put up with any of the penalties you suggest? -
Cross-server inventory and location preservation is a mistake.
heretic (DayZ) replied to jafit's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Sorry Tossing, I think any discrimination of this type against the player base to be inherently unfair and likely to do more harm than good. For example why should my 6 day old (best attempt so far) character who avoids overpopulated areas (either zeds or players) and scratches a living further inland be forced to start on the coast just because I am unable to play on the same server all the time? It doesn't make any sense and in a game where "realism" seems to be the bee in so many players bonnets is totally out of place. -

heretic (DayZ) replied to jafit's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I disagree. If like me, you can't find a single consistently reliable server to play on all the time, what do you suggest I do? Stop playing the alpha of DayZ? Sorry bro, but I like the game, buggy as may be and I have great hopes that by beta and/or retail release it will be even better! And if you haven't experienced the last week with 5 hotfixes and an Arma2 beta update causing you to spawn on a server with an inaccurate version description in the title, then you haven't been playing enough, or, you've been playing too much on one reliable server and are one of the lucky few. I disconnect frequently due to some of the many legitimate reasons for doing so (including having a life). I've never dc'ed during PVP and my toon has died for it frequently. No big deal! Just "pick it up and start again". Frustrating? Hell yeah! Challenging? You bet! Punishing? You'd better believe it! Am I gonna whinge about it and tell others what they SHOULD do about it? Na! Or am I going to try to make constructive suggestions as to how game/server mechanics may be improved? Yep! I made a couple of posts re. this on another thread; http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=19383&pid=179273#pid179273 -

It's been known to happen. I don't know about you, but the way some ladies asses move, I can hardly keep my eyes off of them! Blokes asses... nah! Not for me thanks. No, the way you wrote is that you tell yourself not to look at men´s asses because you are straight. The fact that you mentioned not looking at men`s asses tells me you might be a little insecure or more. You are the kinda guy we shoot on sight in DayZ. Sorry, you are the weakest link. Oh dear, do you think you might be reading a little bit too much into my post? And with a username such as myshl0ng, I have a suspicion that you may be the weakest link!!! Penis obsessed perhaps? Fantastic name for a toon. I do wonder if she has 20 slots too? -

heretic (DayZ) replied to BurtRaven's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I always prefer looking at a girls behind rather than a blokes, even in computer games. Sure it can be distracting but maybe it's just the way I'm wired. :) But, it does raise the question, where are all the female zombies! I don't get chased by screaming hordes of women in real life, it would be great if it could happen in game. And if they caught me.... well, they could just eat me! -
I agree with you in a sense, it is crappy. But what if that player had disconnected within that building 8 hours ago and was just connecting to play their favourite game. Sadly you were in the building at the same time and they spawned behind you! Bad luck! It's unfortunate, yeah, but perhaps what really needs looking at here is a respawn mechanism that prevents a player respawning on a server within say, 50 metres or so of another player. If another player is within that range when you're going to respawn you have to wait until that player leaves that 50 m zone. Let's face it, most of us have to wait to get onto a server now, with receiving files, waiting for character to create or loading screens. It would be different if they hopped servers just to flank you, but legitimate respawns aren't the problem.
-
i don't think that server hopping should be penalised. Many people have legitimate reasons to move from one server to another, sometimes in quick succession; ie. night time (despite time given in server descriptions), bad connections, disconnect by server, stuck on loading screen, to play with friends, to play on a less crowded server, to do something in real life (go to the loo, get a drink, something to eat - beanz, sardines, pasta of course), the list is endless. Server hopping for loot or to ghost other players is crappy, but should the questionable game style of a small minority of players spoil things for everybody else?

Hi there, First of all I'd just like to say that I'm amazed and incredibly impressed by the work you guys are doing. secondly, any chance of some help please? I'm fine for blood but have a broken leg and no morphine. I'm down to my last 3 rounds for my M1911 but will deal with that after I'm up and running again. I'm in the edge of the treeline south west of Rogovo. My Steam name is hereticsw -
Carebear Detection Alarm! *Alarm Sounds*
heretic (DayZ) replied to Shrapnel (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Shrapnel, I'm not sure that swearing at people is going to make them take you any more seriously. It may even harm your arguments more than it helps them. As for Rocket not having time to sift through all the bad suggestions to find the good ones. I'm sure that he is big enough and bad enough to tell people that himself, if he feels it necessary. I don't think that he needs any self appointed protectors to do so on his behalf. In addition, if the moderators aren't doing anything about it, could it be because that they don't feel it's entirely necessary? Perhaps if you were a moderator on this forum, you would. But you aren't a moderator, so how about you let them get on with doing the job their way and concentrate on doing what you can to make the alpha test of DayZ better for all of us by making your constructive suggestions heard by the community instead of flaming other people for theirs, no matter how stupid they may seem to you. Of course if you want to be in control of things you could always start your own forum... Or better still your own mod! Good luck with both of those. In the meantime, please, have a drink, smoke a joint, take a run around the block, do whatever it takes to get it out of your system because getting worked up about it isn't helping you or anybody else. -

heretic (DayZ) replied to Shrapnel (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I don't know about you lot but I have a simple solution to the problem. It is 100% guaranteed to work every time... If I don't like or am not interested in a thread, I simply don't read, reply or subscribe to it. Problem solved without the need for rants or flaming. Additionally the rant threads strike me as being equally as pointless as the daft suggestion threads that you so dislike. Gotta' learn to separate the wheat from the chaff! Fire retardant clothing at the ready... -
If we really want to talk realism, your night vision should improve over the course of 15-30 minutes anyway. Of course if someone then shines a torch in your eyes or you look towards a light source you have to wait another 15-30 minutes before you fully regain your night vision. I don't know if a similar mechanic could be incorporated into dayz? i.e. you have to spend some time in the dark before your night vision improves...

Hotfix Build 1.7.1.5 Rolling Update
heretic (DayZ) replied to rocket's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
One further observation. I've just reconnected to a server and found that the half full/empty magazine for my AK74 has vanished from my inventory. Minor annoyance but not one I've had to experience prior to version 1.7.1.5 Lucky I still have my trusty M1911... Now I just have to find some morphine for my broken leg before either a hungry zed or a covetous bandit find me...
