You can only have 2 characters, one being on Normal(3rd person) servers and one being on Hardcore(1st person) servers. That's it.

Normal(3rd person) Hardcore(1st person) and each character is on a separate shard of the Main Hive. That's it in a nutshell. -
So select a GMT value that fits with how/when you want to play. Admins having a GMT offset will give players in any TZ the variety of playing at whatever time of day/night they choose in game. I can assure you until private hives come along(if it's even possible to change then) you won't see anything but 24/7 day/night cycles or 24/7 Day. It is what it is and has been for a long time, sorry to burst your bubble.

Well, if things were working correctly you would get shorter days in winter and longer days in summer. This is how it worked in the Mod/Arma so don't see why it won't in the SA.

thoughts on renaming towns/cities? or at least adding a map?

Disorientation is the idea behind the no map from the get go and really, they should absolutely keep it that way. I can almost guarantee we won't see a HUD map and really don't want it to be honest. Dayz is not and never will be a game of convenience and thank god Rocket for that! In saying the above, you will eventually get to know the map and city names, it just will take some time. ;) -
The question does depend on your Time Zone really but the in game server browser should give you a clue. If you see Hardcore in the server mode then it IS 1st person only. Good luck!

Hopping servers isn't the go here, it's actually called exploring/searching and finding what you need/want. Not running to Elektro or other highly ravaged points on the map. The problem your having finding loot I think only pertains to your playstyle, you really have to mix it up because obviously it's not working for you. I have no issues in finding what I need as do others... Do I server hop? Fuck no! -
There are plenty of 24/7 day servers out there, not sure why you're having trouble finding one currently. As for the thread itself... The subject has been brought up quite a few times. Anyway... We as Admins do not have a GMT offset, I really wish we did and hoping for one soon. A GMT offset would cure all that is wrong with people having issues with the 24hour day/night cycle. With an offset you'd be able to find a server that is day within your TZ during the time you wish to play. The cure isn't shorter day/night cycles, GMT offsets are.

Hardcore/Regular servers, frash spawns!!

There IS only one Central Hive, as of now that hive is split into two shards. One is Hardcore(1st person only), the other is Normal(3rd person). So technically you can have two characters, one saved to Hardcore and one saved to Normal. There is also and issue with some servers not connecting to the Central Hive so they're not saving data correctly, which could cause you to lose characters. There is only one Main hive which all servers connect to. That main hive is split into 2 shards, one is Hardcore and one is Normal. No GSP has their own Hive, it's that simple. Yes, that's how it should work.

Either way, nobody can do anything here about hacked accounts and/or bans. So you have to deal with Steam or BI directly.

The only way to change your GUID is to buy another copy of the game. IF your account was hacked, there's really nothing anyone can do here. Contact Steam and good luck.

Meh, this early in development it is most expected to have characters wiped either on purpose or inadvertently. Whinging about it isn't going to change anything because it is what it is. You're character is dead, time to regear. It's that simple. Did you notice I didn't say "Alpha!"... -

Sub-Private Hives are what they are calling them in the SA. From my understanding they will have their own DB but it won't be local as well as the server files being locked. Not sure what kind of rules these sub-privates will have to adhere to but they won't be moddable at this point in time. -
