Day Z as it should be : The Earth Abides
Noctoras replied to Whyherro123's topic in General Discussion
Fair enough, but then the game will have spelled its doom. Player / map size ratio, time to get geared and run towards PvP will give you an ever diminishing player base. Long ago, I was heavily into PvP (Unreal Tournament) at the time and my clan won some leagues and tournaments. I wouldn't bother with a jogging simulator, if I want to dive into a clean, outstanding PvP experience. The biggest skill I can train here is bore myself on sniper hill until I can finally make someone's screen go black and get a hard one on that - great. Well, I am out of my teens and don't have that much time at hands anymore. This game has become a weird mix, but it won't succeed as a PvP shooter with crops attached either, that's for sure. -

I could recommend you some good survival games: Doom, Quake, Unreal Tournament (I guess there would be Call of Duty or Half Life as well, but the PvE part might be too large for you ;) ) -
Haven't played in a while, what's the current state of this game?

If so (and for me content are not new vehicles and guns), I will say sorry. Don't see it coming, though. Not beyond what's announced. Given the schedule and where we are in time ... -

I think one of the problem is that the devs don't dare to introduce new elements, they try to make an Arma plus clone - and as it often happens with clones with little to no new basic elements, they won't reach the original. Everytime I see "we introduce pant X, since faction Z in Arma used it" ... "the well known Heli from Arma" ... blablabla .. DayZ would have the potential to be a GREAT game on the basis of Arma. Instead they take Arma and for fear of any negative reacion just add much of the same stuff all over again. Come on, make the game stand out. Give it something ... NEW, which would grab us. Dare leave the beaten path for a while. Example was the soft skills: When I read that they would come, but only so that everyone can do everything, just somewhat faster with experience, I though "wasted opportunity" - I don't care if I chop a tree in 30 or 20 secs, fix a leg in 20 or 15 secs. I doubt anyone cares. But apparently since Arma has no different player skills, you can't have medics or hunters or electricians in DayZ either. That's a pity. Skills was just a random pick, because I like this example and see much potential. Could have taken base building as well. We're so far in development that I have little hope, but I so wish the would scrap adding one gun after another, a new coat and a new hat and a new vehicle. Dare something. Give this gameplay a meaning and the players something to play for. -

4-8 weeks? are you serious? the time between stable updates is exceeding 2 months at present and .59 is only about to come experimental. -
Well, the thread asks for opinions - this is mine and that's yours, all good. I just wish it would become more than "just another Arma mod" and endgame is what you make of it. The more content, the more endgame possibilities. A heli is a heli and as such just another means of transport, opens no further options in gameplay in MY opinion. I'm quite aware that other people do think different ;)
-
I see it as primarily a dev time better spent elsewhere. There is still no element to the game apart from running, shooting, transporting. I don't see the urgent need to work on either of these. Better introduce different content, reasons to play. Beginning from zombies, ending in your imagination.
-
Either you are a developer, or you're mixing something up. 0.56 has been skipped, I reckon you mean 0.55, where loot was few and far between (also my fav patch) and the zombies didn't sound like a sawmill running after you, but were all stealthy.

:o well, I better just leave it be at this point - not only, because it strays ever further off topic :D -

nope, but I would diiiiiiiig a real sandbox game based on the DayZ game with an even bigger map, where PvP is an element, but not the all dominant one -
I like the idea as well.

Please add a "report abuse" button to the server list window. It would make things soooooooooo much easier.

not STOP, but give people more to do than run-gear-shoot-die-spawn with a can of beans inbetween. Give them a reason for interaction - I don't buy the "if there is a gun, everyone will only spray and pray" - there is a reason we have civilization nowadays. The world gave us reasons to cooperate. It also gave us reasons to kill each other. Okay, that's too philosophic, but the essence is, that there should be an incentive for either way of action. -

That's where I think a dedicated skill system would help. If you have med capabilities and I don't have them, you might be a good partner for me to get me through my char life for instance. Skills could also be teachable or to be learnt from books, but an individual skill set, setting you apart from the person you meet would help there. No, it will not end PvP and PvP should remain part of the game in my opinion. Part of it, not the sole content, which it currently is. As for scarcity - early 0.55 for me has seen much more player interaction than any following builds for the mere reason that not everyone was stuffed to death with guns and ammo. I have seen people actually trading ammo for food in game. Of course, they could have just tried to kill each other, but I reckon the person asking for ammo had a gun but no matching ammo and the other person, well, I dunno, maybe was just about to starve. Why go into a melee fight with uncertain end - so not everyone having 3 guns at the ready might be a benefit to interaction as well. And as someone who has a gun I probably would not immediately shppt anything that moves, since there would be many people I would not perceive as a direct threat. Basically the biggest problem is, though, that there is little to do once geared and gearing is way too easy ever since 0.55 again. I accept that you have a different stance on this issue, but that's what boards are there for after all. Have a good day. A quick edit: As for modding support, I'm not even sure if this helps or if it further splits a declinign community between different mods - but this remains to be seen, I can see it go either way depending on how the actual mods look like. -
of course you're right on this as well - however, the game having become a mere KOS simulator can be frustrating as well, unless you swim with the tide. I think more player interaction would also make it more rewarding and I think survival or individual skill elements would actually help on this way. Of course this does not mean to simulate obstipation on the toilet or whatever frustrating stuff reality involves.

I know, it's just hard to implement realism into a video game, that was my point. Sorry, I didn't mean to offend or attack you.

For just another shooter, the map is too big with a player count too little, so I don't see this ever getting an immersive PvP only experience on the long run, this game needs more . Thus I am with the OP, give the game more content. Individual player skills, an environment to cope with, elements which make interaction apart from KOS meaningful. -
No, but for all means of logic, they are not only KOSing either, if you are going down the road of realism. They are equally not able to handle a sniper rifle as though they were born with it from day one either, neither do they all have the same skill set. Have yet to see KOSers in third world countries. Usually they kill with a purpose, not out of mere boredom - and most will think twice before shooting someone. But that's just for the record, I am well aware that you cannot get this degree of realism into a game (well, maybe you can, but that's for another dev studio at some point in the future then).

random spawning and more random loot sounds cool - however, DayZ should become MORE than a mere Arma copy and this is one of the big drawbacks at present. So I do not think weapon sway, ghillie suits should be high on the priority list. Actually, what this game lacks most is content to make it stand out from "just another Arma ..." This game is no survival game, let alone a sandbox or open world game. There is little else than collecting these endless amounts of guns and shoot people with it until they shoot you. Zeds. Definitely, they need to be back. But this should not be the end of the story. Just my opinion.

so much of a threat that you colelct them like stamps in a album :-)
-
Shows how much of a "brutal survival game" it really is ... ;) If there was no PvP, you would have a hard time dying. 31ROX was spot on on the zombies, to date they have never been a real threat.
-
hardcore survival on canned food, which is about as rare as sun in a desert :P sorry, I just couldn't resist when reading your appraisal hymn ;)

I had mine in 0.55 ... hours played (with apple picking, mind you!), still no gun. finally found a gun, felt like a king on the server (it was a crappy gun, but I had gun + ammo), but was close to starvation in stary. Had lost my mate to starvation already. There was this pond. Zombies were still mute (with hindsight that was cool). Needed to drink or die. drank. Zombie I didnt hear coming hit me from behind. Dead. Now all is dull. Ever since loot tweaking in 0.55 gearing is no issue, survival is none. Only question is whether my screen goes black because someone shoots me or I shoot someone's screen black. In the WORST case I survive for ages .... worst case, since dull becomes super dull. And in 0.59 I get: - VSS Vintorez. Another gun for blacking screens. - Vehicles. Quite cool, but if I get hyper bored in a Lada or in a V3S, well ...
