  1. Not exactly sure why you are linking one of my replies to a post from a different thread... The poster suggested that I was arguing for full militarization in that thread, but really I just wanted to talk about planes. You have a very strange view of things if you think the next step from dropping a grenade from a helicopter is napalm... I'm guessing you're one of those people who thinks that aircraft are going to ruin what you think DayZ should be?

    It's happening...

You drag and drop guts onto an ashwood or long stick and it will give you a bow. It's been in experimental for awhile.

What is it that drives you to play DayZ a lot?

When you get a vision of something that can be done, like acquire a cool vehicle, a cool gun, build a cool base, it motivates you to invest your time and see your plans come to fruition. Put simply, I play Dayz a lot when there is lots to do.

I'm going to probably desperately grope around for a barrel and a military tent and then I will begin my primitive lifestyle of archery and secrecy.

    Unofficial Change Log for .57

That list certainly has more than what my list has. It seems pretty good. I didn't know that the wiki had been updated. I've had some back luck with it in the past. Thanks very much though this is a great source. I'll update my own list here using their information soon-ish. In the meantime everyone should check out that link, it is exhaustive.

    Vision nerfed yet again?!

Personally I don't give a shit about a zoom function. In real life can your eyeballs go into hawkeye zoom mode? No they cannot. You need binochs or something.... I would make a slight zoom available, which sort of simulates how when we focus on something it beomes more clear. Since the real issue with video games is FOV related, not zoom related, I really don't see the issue. If you're someone who likes to lay down and shoot people, then get a scope. Other than that I honestly don't know why people are crying about not having telescopic eyeballs.

    DayZ Slowly dying ?

There are precisely two things that existed in the mod that were addictive which do not currently exist in SA. It's so simple... Vehicles and Bases. Vehicles. There were a variety of vehicles in the mod, and many servers had the numbers of them jacked way the hell up so people could actually experience them. There were vehicles to choose from and owning and storing one was possible as a group. When mods like epoch and overwatch came out then people had even more access to vehicles through in game currency traders or constructing our own, which made the game even more addictive without ruining it by flooding the server with vehicles. Bases Bases didn't actually exist in the original mod but once modding happened basebuilding mods quickly became the standard DayZ model; everyone played the mods. Vehicles are more important to the adictiveness of Dayz (access to and variety of) but eventually with modding base building came in and provided players with a legitimate end game other than stashing a vehicle or tent. in a forest. Right now the mod has tons of vehichles including aircraft, base building, extra maps, and more stuff. The SA by comparison is less than half a game as of yet because vehicles and basebuilding are still not really a part of the game. It's a miricle that the SA is more popular than the DayZ mod for these reasons (if it even is) and can only be attributed to player lyoalty to DayZ itself. Once real base building mechanics get added in, and real vehicles like cars, bikes, helis boats, planes, dayZ SA is going to be like a massively improved souped up version of the most popular DayZ mods. Go away until the game is at least half developped before you declare it this or that. It's just a baby, don't throw it out with the bath water. EDIT: for all of you about to whine about how long DayZ has been in development, it takes years to make a game like DayZ if you want to do it right and not just rip off an outdated engine like the mod was able to do.

    Prepared Meals: STEW!

Cooking in DayZ is actually quite fun and rewarding; it feels good to cook something on your own and to reap the benefits. I think, however, that with some basic additions to the complexity of the process a whole lot of interesting things can happen. The gist of my idea is that players should be able to cook multiple ingredients together in order to either improve it's nourishment factor or to provide some extra sort of benefit like replenishing some blood or a new stat mechanic related to morale/comfort that somehow has an affect on character performance. Eating a nice boiled meal of cow steak, and potatoes should be more nourishing than just eating potatoes or steak separately. Eating human flesh could have the opposite effect on morale and manifest unique symptoms. Eating a prepared meal with human flesh could be even worse, basically making you Hannibal Lecter. Players who are very cannibalistic could eventually start getting random shakes (something legend says is associated with cannibalism) and also sometimes break out into maniacal laughter (also legendarily associated with cannibalism). It could even be such that players who are heavy cannibals can do sinister laughter on command, allowing them to terrorize their victims in a very immersive way. This is a bit of a tangent, but I'm not sure what the real benefit of cooked delicious meals should actually be, so I'm putting it out there. Part of surviving day to day is about creating the very best meal for yourself that you possibly can. You spend a lot of time gathering ingredients or hunting, and then finally when you make camp you cook it all up together and make it as nice tasting and as nourishing as possible. Having a meal that tastes nice is incredibly important for morale which has a direct affect on human performance. If you eat a delicious meal, especially in harsh conditions, it can give you a comforting feeling that can keep you going for longer than something cold or unpleasant yet just as nourishing. Just about anything can be made into a STEW. Certain foods however compliment one another in different ways and this has an impact on taste. The cook time of each ingredient is also important, adding things to the stew at the right time is essential to ensure everything is cooked to the desired degree. things that need to cook for longer must be added earlier on, for example. Depending on the combination of foods cooked into a stew, a simple formula could be programmed based on which foods compliment other foods by specific factors (example potatoes compliment chicken and beef very well, but zucchini not so much. Tomatoes compliment beef very well (spaghetti sauce anyone?) but they don't compliment chicken as well). Spices could also be added, which the more I think about the more more it sounds totally awesome. The devs can have bit of fun here deciding what goes best with what, and the end result is a kind of modular stew system that has a learning curve, along with appropriately rewarding results. In the end I hope for a system where some players can be labeled as bad cooks, and some players labeled as incredible cooks. Some players will throw random things together that don't compliment each-other in terms of taste with spices that make no sense, and they will burn some of the ingredients by adding them at the incorrect times. The very best cooks will cook their stews flawlessly and burn nothing, preserving more nourishment and adding to the quality of the taste. They will also choose the best combinations of ingredients and spices available, ensuring that groups of survivors get the most out of their food supplies; their cooking knowledge and skill will become an asset. Stew is a perfect first step in adding to the cooking system and making it something in-depth, fun, challenging, and rewarding. Mechanically it is a great way for survivors to consolidate their rations and get the most out of their efforts and gives a uniquely relaxing respite from the harshness of the typical DayZ situation. That said, you never know when the cook is going to poison the stew, and even if you trust them, as always DayZ can thrust that glorious feeling of loss upon you. Imagine that you have slaved all afternoon gathering food stuffs and you are just about to finish your masterful rabbit potato and onion stew with seasoning salts. Boy are you hungry and you are going to have enough left over to get you to your rendezvous 10km away. Just as you remove your cooking pot from the hear you hear that familiar loud crack and see a bullet strike the wall in front of you. Suddenly everything goes black and all you can do is listen. You hear them come in and begin rooting through your life. One of them asks "Did they have any food?". "Let me check the pot" one of them replies... And then it hits you... They are going to eat your stew....

    Primitive Shelters

All my beans are belong to you. Primitive survival is all about primitive shelters, and we're kidding ourselves if we play a so-called "survival game" without them. Do it developers. Or we will huff and puff and start a riot up in this place!

    Prepared Meals: STEW!

Hey man, no hard feelins at all. Sometimes I get uppity with my responses but it's all in good fun :) I do think that this concept merits a proper thread though. Perhaps you could add to my own concept or share your own within the thread? If the thread becomes refined enough then I would throw up a poll to draw dev attention.
  12. This is terrible and wrong You are saying everyone quit but you are blatantly using statistics to misrepresent the truth. The only reason why DayZ has fewer players right now is because of maintenance. Switch to a 1 month basis and you will see the truth.
  13. I would expect maximum rage, but you never know, more people might be open to the idea than we think. I play sometimes on 3pp servers only because there is more population. Which made me wonder how many other people do the same.
  14. I'll keep it short and sweet: boiling with rocks. It's possible to boil water by placing heated rocks from the fire into the water vessel and removing them and repeating the process. You can purify water this way and you can also cook food this way. Why would anyone want to do this you ask? Burn bowls. A burn bowl can be made from any old hunk of wood and some embers. It requires you to sit there and do a lot of blowing and scraping but the result is a wooden bowl that you can use to boil water in via the heated stone method. I have been unable to find pots when I really want them, and so this could be a great way of achieving the same result without having to rely on luck. Obviously the wooden bowl would not be as good as the pot, one of the spaces would be used for stones, and it would take longer and more work to bring the water to a boil because you would need to shift stones around, but it would get the job done. It could be made from a log, a knife and a fire of some kind, potentially taking a very long crafting phase in order to make it feel realistic. If you have any doubts or curiosity, just watch this video! : The game mechanics are basically already there. Things can absorb heat when in the fire and then diffuse it when they are placed on your body. Have something similar happen for water in pots and burn bowls.

    NPC (Dead) Bodies

The devs said they are going to add world container type loot spawns, perhaps they could just make a bunch of statis dead human models and have them be world containers to loot... Currently they have all kinds of ways of giving variance to objects of the same model (beds/dressers moved around, etc..) they could do the same with human placement and injury type.

Boiling with Stones and the Burn Bowl

So If anyone didn't catch it, the new barrel is really sweet and looks like is going to perform a very large number of functions. http://www.dayztv.com/video/dayz-0-56-multi-purpose-barrels-first-look/ Given the potential importance of these functions, the burn bowl could provide an improvised way to perform some of them on a small scale, in addition to the cooking pot!

    More Primitive/Improvised tools

There are certain things required for wilderness survival that currently can only be found in cities. Namely these things include: Axes, matches, sewing kits, garden lime, string, hoe/shovel, tent. For axes, we should be able to combine improvised knives with sticks and some form of binding in order to an improvised axe For digging farms we should be able to make digging sticks or stone digging tools in a similar way For matches, we should be able to construct fire by friction kits from forest wood: Animal sinew should be able to replace rope for all purposes but should require some special process to acquire: Bones should be craftable into sewing needles, which in conjunction with sinew can craft leather sewing kits. Garden lime is not the only thing that can fertilize a garden or tan a hide. If you boil the brain of a cow in some water then you will produce a solution that can tan the entire hide of said cow. While the cow is alive, it will poop everywherem this poop along with blood and guts makes for a great fertilizer . With all this sinew twine and tanned hides, why not make a a hide shelter! This is the perfect place to store all of your meats! After-all it is a survival game right? Thoughts?

    More Primitive/Improvised tools

I just watched a video of a man using animal guts and some plant matter inside of a barrel in order to CREATE garden lime!!!!! You can also get extra leather if you tan via barrels.... VICTORY FOLKS!!!! WE HAVE FERTILIZER AND TANNING AGENT REPLACEMENTS!!!!!. THE DEVS LISTENED!!! Now if only I can find a barrel...

Perhaps since you are so good with the search function you could link me to the relevant thread? I did use the search function but all I found was an off handed reference to stew in a thread not dedicated to the concept.
  21. So anyone who has been playing on the experimental servers will know what it is like to find absolutely zero loot. That's fine, I'm a survivor, I can take it. Having to survive with absolutely no loot has magnified the flaws in primitive survival and so I might as well share them with everyone else. Berries and apples are good. Without them the experimental server would be literally unplayable. Mushrooms are coming and that will only improve things. Foraging is good. Hunting is also good. I can run down a cow with a stone knife and make a bow to do more hunting. I can cook the food over an open fire, and I can start a fire from oak and birch trees. I can make arrows off the land and improve them with bones of the creatures I kill. That's all that is good about primitive survival. You can forage and hunt with a bow. Here's what you cannot do: You cannot tan the leather from your kills without finding garden lime, which is extremely time consuming and tedious and defeats the whole purpose of primitive survival. Even if you find garden lime then you still need to find a leather sewing kit. The fact that there is no improvised means of tanning leather means that in loot scarce environments leather is not accessible. Because there is no improvised means of sewing leather even if I have tanned leather it remains entirely useless unless you luck out and find the item you are looking for. Solution: Improvised tanning rack made from sticks and gutsImprovised sewing kit made from guts and bone needle (made from bone, just like the bone hook)With these two very reasonable additions we would all be able to fully utilize the parts of our kills, and thereby honor their sacrifices. We would also be able to craft clothing which gives the primitive survivalist essential storage space. The next issue is farming. I'm fine with needing to find seeds, but if I also need to find a shovel and a water container then it is impossible to farm. If I can make primitive sewing kits and tan my leather without garden lime then I would be able to craft leather water pouches, but this still leaves the problem of needing a fancy metal tool in order to till a bit of dirt for my farm plot. It's quite ridiculous to think that unless you have a metal shovel you simply cannot till a small amount of earth. We need to be able to farm without relying on loot merely to dig the ground up a bit. Solution: Improvised digging stick made from a stick and sharpened with a knife This will solve two issues in once fell scoop! Not only will I be able to dig my farm plots, but I will also be able to dig for worms, which will open up the world of fishing for survival. Fishing is great but I'm not ever going to do it if I need to carry around a frigging metal shovel on my back. I don't exactly have a tool shed I can keep all these fancy supplies in now do I? (well at least not yet). I could go on a rant about how ridiculous it would be in real life to be unable to fish without a shovel, but I will spare everyone that. Hopefully everyone agrees. These changes would be small but their impact would be huge for the game of surviving without civilization, which is something many of us are keenly interested in. The ability to make clothing and water pouches would completely revolutionize survivors ability to actually live with some modicum of comfort, and a simple digging stick would open up the world of fishing and farming. Tanning leather is something the sun can do for free. Garden lime can take a long dirt nap. An improvised leather sewing kit doesn't replace the value of a real leather sewing kit. The improvised one is only good for one or two uses whereas a real one lasts much longer and perhaps can mend things that the improvised kit cannot. The improvised kit also cannot stitch wounds. (being made from animal guts and all) A digging stick isn't going to break the game or make actual shovels lose their purpose; an improvised digging stick will break quickly but get the job done in a pinch. The result of this change alone is a game that is reasonable to play without constantly relying on scavenging towns for supplies and for food. Farming and fishing are perfect compliments to one another, and all I need to do to get started with fishing is to get me some worms, the rest is already taken care of. (fishing rod from guts and hook from bones) These requests are beyond reasonable. Incredibly easy to implement and incredibly beneficial in every way. The only possible argument against them is that this would discourage people from constantly going from town to town which produces interaction, but in the words of the devs themselves, I want to play the game how I want, not how you want me to play it. My chilling alone in the forest isn't going to hurt anything. These proposed mechanics still require a great deal of effort from players to execute. Killing your first animal for guts or bones is hard. Finding seeds is hard. Fishing is time consuming. Getting enough leather to make somethig useful is hard. It's just that these are all preferrable to the craps shoot of "will there be loot or will there not be loot".

    Sorely needed primitive survival tweaks

I think it would be absolutely wonderful if I could make a living completely off the zombified grid. One day I will certainly become bored of the forest and out of sheer adrenaline seeking will wander into the danger zones of civilization. The fact that the game allows me to do this in my own time and in my own way is a testament to it's quality. After survivors are done exploring the world they need something long term to work at which they enjoy, and since different people enjoy different things, we require many options. Once the population limit gets increased to 75 or 100 chernarus might begin to feel crowded. When this happens primitive survival will be a god send.

    Sorely needed primitive survival tweaks

Actually by driving a sharp stick into the ground, you can get leaverage on clumped dirt and till it much like a plow. Digging is always hard work unless you have machinery to do it for you. A digging implement made from a stone knife and a stick id something that I dream about. I also dream about an axe made from a stick and a stone knife. They are fragile but they can fell trees with a great deal of patience. Here's hoping that the devs hear our pleas! P.S digging sticks are tried and tested. One neat trick is to make a fire hardened digging stick. You heat up your wood with a fire but don't let it burn and the moisture leaves the wood, making it more tough!

    Sorely needed primitive survival tweaks

For worms it could honestly be possible to collect them with bare hands. As a kid I often ran around the yard turning over rocks for worms to fish with. Regarding the digging of farms with stick, I agree that it should be difficult and labor intensive. The stick should break after only a few plots and so working with one should be much more of a hassle than digging with a shovel. The main issue for me is that I feel like I'm a slave to the metal shovel. Being unable to fish or farm without a metal shovel totally spoils my interest in farming and fishing because when I want to do so I need to go lookiong for a shovel in dangerous towns. If I'm going into dangerous towns then I'm probably going to find a bunch of food and supplies before I chance upon a shovel, so why bother farming or fishing in the first place? A real shovel should not take damage due to being used on the ground. It should last for years just like a real metal shovel would; that would be the value of a real shovel.

    Does DayZ need aeiral transport?

Unless it is a bad ass helicopter, the extent of their arms should be the ability of people to shoot hand held rifles out of the doors. If mounted door guns happen, then they should be pkt/pkp at maximum strength,. Regarding planes, you are very confused. The only reason why people could not land and takeoff everywhere in the mod is because they did not understand how to fly planes whatsoever. It's not their fault though, the first time i flew a realistic plane i crashed it, and then again and again until i decided to actually to research about flight mechanics and what I was doing wrong. In DayZ once I had mastered the flight mechanics the entire map became available thanks to skilled landings and better understanding of what is required to reach takeoff speed in the shortest distance possible. The only plane that was limited was the C130, and even with that there were about 30 places on the map that are easily doable. Planes are easier to maintain than a helicopter, and perhaps easier to fly also. I want to see realistically flying small-medium planes, and even more difficult to fly small-med helicopters.
