This. This sums up why I don't really offer much feedback. I have absolutely no idea what goals the devs have. Every time I think about offering up a detailed opinion, I get lost in my own ideas and how they may have absolutely no bearing on what the devs plan to do anyway, wasting everyone's time. For example, if the devs plan for food to be really scarce and they want new spawns to commonly die, then what good does me writing 5 paragraphs about how I think the game should be changed to make gameplay a bit easier on new spawns do? None. I feel like the devs need to give us a little bit more insight on what they are are trying to test with each patch, what we should be watching for, what their design goals are, and what they are specifically looking for feedback on. I'm not trying to be harsh or rude btw. I just think the devs are handling us like we are a post release community of customers rather than a set of alpha testers that paid for the privilege.

I actually watched the whole clip. This is the best part of that movie.

I was kidding. There will, however, be blood.

My PC: i5-4690k Corsair H60 16GB 1600mhz DDR3 RAM Gigabyte GTX 970 Asus H97i mobo Corsair CX430M PSU Cooler Master Elite 130 3D Mark: http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/6106018 No matter what I edit in the cfg file, I can't seem to do better than 30FPS in cities. My FPS drops below 60 even when I hit places with a ton of trees. I can run the game at 1080p, high or low settings, 1440p DSR high or low settings and it makes almost no difference in my framerate unless I turn up every single setting to max. The game is not utilizing my GPU or my CPU fully so I hit a software limitation rather than a hardware one. This game is just not optimized. I suspect that they will address it at some point but I'm not 100% sure when that might be. I see no reason why my hardware couldn't achieve a 60FPS minimum at all times but whether it ever happens or not is completely up to the devs at this point.

Your arguments are superbly, logically constructed from the left to right viewpoint of the MDA framework and would make any game designer worth their salt proud. I wish I could give you an entire truckload of beans.

What is this thing? -
What do you mean by this: "wait until all is persistence"? What does this mean? How will this effect items? I see people talking about persistence a lot but I can't for the life of me makes heads or tails of what it all means. There seems to be a lot of inconsistencies and a general lack of information out there on the subject.

Hey guys! New here, looking for more FPS!
ColdAtrophy replied to Skittlez_P99's topic in New Player Discussion
When you have a laptop with a dedicated GPU, performance is, to a certain extent, more dependent on how well the engineers designed the cooling on the device. For example, I used to have a Macbook Pro. It had the i7-4950HQ, 16GB 1600mhz DDR3 RAM, and a GT 750m w/ 2GB GDDR5. I was able to run BF4 at 1600x900, 60FPS, mostly low settings.....for about 5 minutes. The CPU and the GPU shared the same heatsink and after a few minutes of pegging the GPU at 99% and the CPU varying between 40-80%, the system would overheat and trigger throttling even with the system fans ramped up to max. Even when I lowered the resolution to 720p with frames capped to 60, this just delayed the inevitable. The system couldn't handle using it's own hardware in a real time environment for long before it dropped down to 30FPS or worse. Since you have an Alienware, I'd imagine that the cooling is a bit better but I've never owned one. I have read a lot about them, particularly when I was looking into my own throttling problems, and I know they can still have this problem. Hardware wise: you should be able to play the game about as well as any of us can. The game is not optimized at all so don't expect to be blown away. It all just depends on how well your laptop can dissipate heat under load. -
Ive only had to eat humans to survive!
ColdAtrophy replied to xundeadbanx's topic in New Player Discussion
This thread made me think of something. If you are a new spawn being chased by a deranged, coast camping cannibal, how cool would it be if you could set improvised traps? The Malay Man-Catcher from "The Most Dangerous Game" comes to mind. -
How Often Do You Meet Survivors?
ColdAtrophy replied to The Vampire Lestat's topic in New Player Discussion
Halp. Buddy. Long pig is a slang term for eating human flesh. I only know this because I Googled it directly from his post. He's talking about eating people. -
I think I came across someone using a zombie soundboard once. I heard a lot of zombie noises that I had never heard before suddenly and haven't heard since. I think they were using it to try to scare people into coming out of hiding to fight or run. I hid until all the commotion stopped and then moved along. Pretty random, probably mostly off topic. Your post just reminded me to mention it on here and see if anyone else had encountered the same thing.

I dont understand why there is no AUTO RUN KEY!!!
ColdAtrophy replied to Bohannan (DayZ)'s topic in Suggestions
Fair enough. The script runs through the LUA API that Logitech uses for the software that they bundle with all their gaming peripherals. I simply modified the activation characteristics from "hold" to "toggle". Whether they can detect it or not is really kind of secondary to me though. In the spirit of the game and out of respect for both the devs and my fellow gamers, I don't want to do something that the devs consider to be cheating. -
I dont understand why there is no AUTO RUN KEY!!!
ColdAtrophy replied to Bohannan (DayZ)'s topic in Suggestions
I'd really like to hear some definitive answers on this. I got my a thread locked today because I was asking about whether it was legal to use a macro for autorun. I posted the macro (not knowing that it was against forum rules to do so) and was redirected here. It's not going to allow me to AFK. That's a great way to die (running right into enemy players, running off a cliff, etc.). It would just help the joints in my fingers not get as strained over long play sessions. I get that this is an "anti-game" or whatever you want to call it, but I don't see why the control scheme can't be a tad more ergonomic considering the amount of holding "W" that you currently have to do to get anywhere or do anything. This is the first time I'v ever looked into macros and I don't support cheating. I just want to know if I'm in danger of getting banned for what amounts to a small customization for comfort, no different really than rebinding keys or changing my FOV. Can we at least get some kind of confirmation one way or the other? -
I took a crash course on the basics of LUA scripting because I sometimes find myself running for long stretches of time and I got tired of holding the keys down. The software that came with my Logitech G402 wasn't allowing me to set up a proper run toggle and I kept having problems with it. So, I spent an hour reading and worked out a script for it. Is this going to get me in trouble with Battleeye? I'm still pretty new to PC gaming but I keep seeing things thrown around equating scripts with hacking/cheating and I want to make sure that I am not going to get in trouble. I don't think this should be viewed as cheating since I'm just making the controls a tiny bit more ergonomic for extended play sessions, but I don't know if the anticheat stuff can tell the difference. Here's the script. I'm not an experienced coder (I went from not knowing what LUA was to throwing this together in 2 hours) so it may not be the cleanest thing but it does work. [sniiip] Do I have anything to worry about?
-
Precisely. The script runs through automatic profile detection for DayZ. It runs automatically when I start the game and only affects whether I have to hold the keys or can hit one button to turn it on our off. I thought it likely that it wasn't a big deal, but I thought I'd post and ask just to be sure.

That was funny to read. I'm thinking about doing some stuff like this. I'm gonna put on the next pink raincoat I find and take off my pants, running around Cherno with a lit flare in my hand while holding PTT and playing this: Maybe I can find one of those Payday masks...

As I write this down, I'm still shaking from the adrenaline that coursed through my body. I came to this land, cold and hungry, looking for a way to survive. I never considered what my survival might cost me, what it might cost others. I began my journey on the coast, just south of Rify. I scavenged for what little I could find at a large ship, beached and broken. What scraps were there offered little protection from the cold and the gnawing hunger in the pit of my stomach. As I was ready to leave, I heard voices. Fearing for my safety, I hid like a coward until the danger had passed. Cautiously, I made my way up to Black Lake, making contact with the only person I knew in this strange, infested God forsaken land. Let's call him "Dee". He found me, fed me, and helped me put some clothes on my back. In times like these, he stands out as a saint among men. It makes me feel a little helpless and less of a man to lean on another survivor so heavily. I make a promise to myself that if I get the chance I will repay his kindness. He acts like it's no big deal, but it is and deep down we both know it. The friendships forged in Chernarus are not the petty things of the old world. They are unbreakable bonds that cannot help but form when you put your life in the hands of another, and he does the same. That's when it gets simple. That's also when shit can get insanely complicated fast. Covering one another, house after house, we grabbed what we needed, leaving the rest for whoever else may need them. Before this is all said and done, there will be others. Many, many others. We eventually came to an isolated, but important location. Upon realizing where we were, what we were doing, I experienced a rush of mixed emotions. I turned to Dee and asked, "You sure this is gonna be ok?" "We still need to be careful, but not many people know about this place. We got this man. Eyes open, move nice and slow. Don't run. Look for signs that someone is or was recently here, and we'll cover each other. We'll get inside, grab what we can use, and get the fuck out," Dee said. He sounded calm and collected. I wish I had his experience. I had begun to realize that not many of us really knew how easy all aspects of life had become before it all came crashing down around our ears. "Ok then. I guess we'll be alright," I said, not sounding very convinced, and truthfully, I wasn't. Not at all. I've seen the aftermath and heard about the carnage people have inflicted upon each other at places like these. Maybe it was off the beaten path, but that didn't make me feel any better about what we could be walking into. Still, I needed gear. Dee had been doing things just like this for months, maybe years. Perhaps being here with him was going to make all the difference for whether we lived or died. I didn't mention any of what was going on in my head. It didn't matter. We both knew that we were really just here for me and that whatever happened here today would be my fault. We moved up and I followed his lead carefully, methodically, just like we had talked about. One building down - one to go. I secured a few pieces. Getting better things is a double-edged sword here which is a thought that only occurred to me after I had finally gotten some of what I needed. I may as well have painted a big target on my back, wearing some of the things I found, but when things get rough I'm sure I will be glad to have them. Plus, maybe it wouldn't be so bad. My outfit did help me blend into the foliage that surrounded us. We moved through the next building just as easily. Although we'd only been journeying together for a short time, we had already begun to develop a nice rhythm to our movements. When to move forward, who's covering who. We just might make it, I thought. Leaving the place just as we found it, Dee disappeared into the brush, making his way back up the way we came, to the relative safety of the forest. The man was a chameleon. I had already lost sight of him completely. I carefully made my way up to a half wall on one side of the building when I heard some rustling. Probably just Dee. When you travel with someone else, no matter how on edge you are, you start to tune out the little noises they make, brush them off. There may be safety in numbers but there is also danger in complacency. That's when I saw a figure in the bushes in front of me. I didn't see exactly where Dee went so I assumed it was him. I walked up within 3 feet of him and what I saw made me stop dead in my tracks. Dee was most certainly not wearing the clothes that I saw on the individual in front of me. FUCK. "Dee! Where are you?" I asked as quietly as I could, sub vocalizing into my throat mike, panic-stricken, primal fear kicking through my veins like a wild bull. It was all I could do to not simply lose my shit on the spot. "I'm back up the hill where we came down from", he quickly returned, clearly noting in my speech that something was very clearly, most certainly wrong. "Where are you?" I couldn't speak. I couldn't move. I couldn't say what I needed to say to warn my partner, the man who quite literally gave me the clothes off his back to keep me from freezing to death in the middle of nowhere. In that moment, I realized that I had failed. I completely and utterly failed the only person who had never failed me. I was certain that I had just unwittingly walked right into the jaws of death and not only wasted the supplies he donated to me, but his time and perhaps even his life. Yet, the guy didn't even notice I was there. How? I will never know. All I knew is that this unknown variable with a rifle, presumably loaded, moved from his hiding place and bolted off in the direction of my partner. Time stopped for just a moment, and yet, I still could not think. Every neuron in my brain, every fiber of my muscles, every blood cell in my veins all agreed in perfect unison that there was only one course of action and that I could take my calm, friendly, logical disposition and shove it right up my own ass. There was only one universal, perfect truth in that moment. Kill or be killed. If I did not act, the man I owed my very life to would die. I did not think. I did not plan. I was barely even really prepared. I simply fired until I heard the empty, hollow click. Click. Click. The smoke cleared and time resumed. We gave the guy a once over and decided that most of what he had was destroyed. I was fine with that. I could hardly even look at the body. We hid it in some bushes and tried not to make it look obvious that someone was just here but I had just dumped 10 rounds into a guy that was likely dead in 2 or 3 shots and the clock was ticking on the curious opportunists who might come to investigate. We got out of there, traveling for quite some time and eventually we made camp. As I write this Dee is asleep by the campfire. I don't know how he can sleep. I feel sick. I swore I wouldn't become this. Just because there is no longer law, that does not give us the authority to kill a man who just happened to be around. I look back upon the me that hoofed it across the beach, hiding in what could have been my coffin simply because I heard some voices. I'm not sure what upsets me more: the fact that I just killed a man or the fact that I was that fucking stupid a mere few hours earlier. How could I be untouched by my new environment? How could I not adapt to the circumstances that I find myself in? Of course I was going to have to change. If I did not, I would fall off this precipice that humanity now finds itself precariously perched upon. Despite the fact that I could barely stand the thought of being a murderer, I look over at Dee and I realize that if I had not done what was necessary, there is a very good chance that neither of us would be here right now. As I settle in for a long cold night, keeping my shift on watch, torturing myself with my thoughts, I find some comfort in the knowledge that we will have a tomorrow and that some day, the harsh lessons forced upon me will have been for the better. Who knows what will happen next?

From a Survivor's Journal - Day 1
ColdAtrophy replied to ColdAtrophy's topic in New Player Discussion
Written words have failed me. I can't stop laughing. -
ATTENTION MODS: If one of you guys could move this to General Discussion, I sure would appreciate it, assuming you agree that to move it would be okay. I didn't mean to post it in New Player Discussion. EDIT: Thank you! So I've read on here that the Plate Carrier does nothing for protection as of .54. The DayZ wiki seems to suggest that the smaller caliber rounds (.22 and 9mm, I assume) take extra shots to kill if you are wearing the Plate Carrier. I'm not sure which is correct or what the intention of the devs are here. Regardless, I've come across something strange. I put a Plate Carrier in the inventory space for my Gorka jacket. Now, on the main menu, it shows my character wearing a Plate Carrier. I'm not sure why because my character in game does not reflect this change. This got me wondering. If you put a Plate Carrier in a jacket and assuming the Plate Carrier actually does something to negate damage, is the game attempting to apply said damage protection to me? It in a way, it would kind of make sense and therefore I'm not able to rule out the notion. If it doesn't do anything at all in game yet, then I guess it really doesn't matter. I'm just curious if there are any examples of items in game working in the way that I propose.
-
Interesting. I wonder, do the devs ever weigh in directly on stuff like this or does the community generally figure this stuff out on its own?
-
Maybe you understood what I meant, but I realized that I made a typo in the part you quoted. It has been corrected, and now reads "The first time I found a Plate Carrier..." Sorry if that was confusing, but I think you may have gotten what I meant to say. Anyway, thanks for the tip. When .55 hits, I'm going to hit the military zones hard. I don't like to hang out at them too much because I find it hard to manage my inventory, make smart decisions about what to pick up, and watch my own back as it is now. I'm still figuring everything out. When those hit stable, I really want to put a set together. It was just intriguing to me because I hadn't seen any other wearable gear with attachments.. I know the Smersh stuff is like this too but I have never seen anything but the backpack.

Excited for the Upcoming Disease & Cold System
ColdAtrophy replied to Deathlove's topic in General Discussion
So sadistic. I love it though! The pandemonium that could be wrought on players! I'm not sure what the eventual goals are for this game, but, although I get that survivors would definitely do this, it strikes me as a little odd that top tier stuff is all about military looting. If you aren't into hitting airfields solo and dealing with people popping in from all angles constantly, then there doesn't seem to be much else to do. While not solving the issue that I perceive (which may not be a genuine issue depending on how the devs feel about it) the changes they are bringing seem to be aimed at diversifying the experience away from the strictly military gearing play that exists now. Maybe you'd be better off wearing this depending on how you play: Compared to how it is now: ]] Basically, I'm excited at the vast potential of this game. It seems I bought into this at the right time! -
The first time I found a Plate Carrier, I backtracked through the tents at NWAF trying to find one of these holsters that I had recently seen there. I spent a good 30 minutes looking and broke my leg accidentally falling off a watch tower ladder only to find that the regular Chest Holster was not the item I was looking for. I was starting to wonder if the Plate Carrier attachments only spawned at heli crashes or something. My thinking on this may be flawed, so feel free to point it out if so, but I can see merit in your idea for this and some in mine. On one hand, having it work the same way as the ballistic helmet does simplify things. The way the ballistic helmet is now makes some sense to a degree because the bullet loses velocity over distance, therefore making it possible for the helmet to stop a round from damaging. I'm not saying it works exactly the same as real life, but it's clearly adhering to a kind of realism in the logic behind why it works the way it does. Most commonly, (and although this varies by region and application) these vests are designed to protect against smaller rounds. I'm not an expert but I did a little reading on this and it seems that the standard used by the US military protects up to .45 ACP with the other significant factor being the velocity of the round. My thinking was that this vest could stop the first couple of rounds from a pistol, excluding the Magnum, and then be ruined. Either way would still fit. Velocity decreases over distance so the helmet model would still adhere to the authenticity they aim for with the game. I guess I just really like the idea of a ballistic vest actually stopping a bullet, largely because I've never played a video game where that was a mechanic. On the other hand, getting hit still hurts regardless and can break ribs, bruise, etc. so maybe removing damage is not realistic either.
-
In my OP, I wrote that the wiki mentioned smaller caliber rounds being less effective against a Plate Carrier. Thing is, I just went back to try to find it and it seems like I'm not correctly remembering all the sources of information I've looked at to arrive at this conclusion. The wiki only says The vest does not seems to be bulletproof as of the 0.54 stable branch, however it does seems to absorb quite a few more bullets than other vests. Do you remember or did you know what type of rounds hit you when you were testing it out? I'm really curious about this thing. I feel like it should be rare, give a decent damage resistance up to a certain caliber and reduce dexterity so you don't become an unstoppable juggernaut, but can still benefit from damage protection. You are confirming that the attachments definitely do not spawn in stable? Do you have a source? Not doubting or trying to be rude. I'm sure you are right as I haven't been able to find a single person claiming to have them all. I just would love to read about it if the information is out there. 2-3 shots from a .380 is exactly the same as normal, is it not? Forgive my lack of knowledge, I'm still learning.
