Upgrading my rig with DayZ in mind - AMD or Intel?
ColdAtrophy replied to ZomboWTF's topic in New Player Discussion
My Rig: Intel i5-4690K @ 4.5ghz w/ Corsair H60 Gigabyte GTX 970 Asus H97i-Plus 2x8GB DDR3 @ 1600mhz Crucial MX100 256GB SSD I spent two weeks running Rivatuner OSD while playing the game and watching load change in real time on my GPU and my CPU. I absolutely positively cannot stay above 30FPS at all times unless I change a couple of settings in the cfg file which makes any buildings and vehicles render in low res and flip flop back and forth for a second as I move forward between low res and high res. My In-Game Settings: Objects: Very Low (Any higher and I lose 5-15 FPS, depending on how much higher) Terrain: Very High Clouds: Very High Shadows: Very High Video Memory: Auto Texture Detail: Very High Texture Filtering: Very High Antialiasing: Very High Alpha to Coverage: All Trees + Grass Edge Smoothing: FXAA High HDR Quality: Low Ambient Occlusion: Enabled Post Process Quality: Very High No matter what combination of settings I use, if Objects are set higher than Very Low, I lose frames in large cities to the point of unplayability. I'm talking like 18 FPS in Novo. However, I can crank up all other settings and my FPS seems to hardly be affected. If I set everything to the Lowest settings, CPU 0 sits around 40-60% usage, the others much less. If I set everything to the Highest settings, I see the same thing. My GPU seems literally incapable of affecting my minimum framerate. The only thing that does affect my minimum framerate is messing with Object settings, View Distance, and Shadow Distance in the cfg file. With the new renderer will come DirectX 11 and eventually DirectX 12 support. DX 12 should make AMD an excellent choice for this game as it helps to spread the load out among all cores. Until then, Intel is the only way I'd even bother. -
. Thanks for the update. I've looked in on this thread a couple of times, hoping to hear netting is still in.

I have got to be the unluckiest player in DayZ
ColdAtrophy replied to WilliamTheConqueror's topic in General Discussion
I know it doesn't solve the problem, but if you are having a really tough time and just want to get a character rolling, you can try spawning fresh on a low population server. At one point, several hundred hours ago, I was feeling like you are. I spent some time on low pop servers just so I could get off the coast, learn the game, and enjoy myself. After awhile, I felt comfortable enough to get back into max player count servers. I learned how to survive in a slightly less stressful environment and then expanded on those skills until it was no longer a problem. I'm just as comfortable spawning in on a 45/50 as I am on a 0/50 server. These days, the only time I get KoS'ed is when I do something stupid. For example, the last time I was KoS'ed, I stood up from my computer chair to grab my headphones which are hanging from a hook on the wall. I was standing somewhat in the open when I did that and started hearing single gunshots as I sat back down. While my character was standing still, the guy missed me 4 times with what I believe was a Mosin. As I started to run, the 5th shot hit me in the head and I died. Another thing that might help is finding a friend to play with. I roll around Chernarus with a friend I met on here and we have saved one another countless times from stealth ninja zombies and over aggressive assholes. Just the other day some guy came into a military jail behind us while my friend was picking up and loading a Magnum he found. The guy started up the stairs with his axe raised, no doubt expecting to catch an unsuspecting victim fooling with items, but instead was met with a hail of .45 ACP and a trip back to the coast because I was covering those stairs like a good partner. -
I find it sad that this thread has to pop up on a weekly basis even though there is an "I Accept" button that must be clicked every time one starts the game.

No need. I was trying to escape from my then girlfriend's house. Her mom came home unexpectedly.... :D

I jumped off a 25 foot high roof once. The ground was super squishy as it had rained a lot lately and I immediately tucked and rolled, popped up on my feet, and then started running which helped transfer momentum. It still didn't feel great and one of my ankles makes a popping noise sometimes which I have always suspected was from that. I'm not sure if I have a point. Jumping off of high stuff isn't a good idea. I'd imagine it would be worse with 75 lbs of bulky gear on your person.

In my mind, the only thing I would change about the first person perspective in this game is to allow a wider FOV. With the slider maxed (which I can now do since they locked the ADS FOV, Thank God!), I still feel like my FOV is a little bit too narrow. If I had to guess, I would say the max FOV on the slider is somewhere around 85. In BF4, for example, I use an FOV of 100. I'd like the ability to set an FOV by numerical value as I like. Other than that, I see absolutely nothing wrong with the 1PP camera. It feels just right in every other way as far as I am concerned.

As I understand it, the Arma engine ties the server's simulation rate with your client's FPS to some degree. This is at least partially the reason why even very powerful PCs can struggle to maintain high framerates in the Arma games. Eugen said in a thread about the new renderer from around January that they have been working on decoupling the server's simulation rate from your framerate as a part of the new renderer upgrade. Anyway, if you were dropping packets or generally hitting the limit on what your old connection could handle, it is conceivable that you were losing frames because the information from the server wasn't getting to you in a timely manner. Technically, if this is the case it wasn't your hardware that was dropping frames but your connection that was not providing you with updates from the server. Your new connection may not have that problem and thus you see a noticeable performance increase, even though your hardware hasn't changed.

When i play, my FPS drops mass and the texture's get realy bad and glitchy!

I have an i5-4690k, so this doesn't really affect me, but I'm curious. If this is true then why is DayZ currently running a 32-bit client? -
FPS: Do any low settings make performance WORSE?
ColdAtrophy replied to lt dan's topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
Use Rivatuner OSD while you play to evaluate the impact each setting has on your machine at each level. That's what I did and I wound up going from all low settings to mostly highest settings without losing frames. I basically ended up having to leave objects on the lowest setting, but everything else is cranked up. -
How would you feel if 1st person perspective was mandatory?

Reread the OP and then reread your statement that I first quoted when this interaction between us began. -

The argument for removing 3PP is dumb. Rather, the argument, if there is really even one to be had at this point since the devs have already made some changes, is that the 3PP camera should be fixed. People say a lot of things I think are laughable, and the removal of the 3PP is one I think we can both agree falls into that category. However, what I was defending was my decision to play on 1PP only servers. You painted us in a light that I find to be not only unfavorable, but objectively untrue. I didn't die any more or any less from 3PP/1PP to 1PP only. I didn't convince myself that all my deaths were due to the periscope. I just realized that if I preferred 1PP, then playing that way in 3PP servers was going to perhaps get me killed more than I might have otherwise. A lot of us are like that. -

I used to only play on 3PP, but I ran around in 1PP for awhile. I figured out after some time that in certain specific situations, I likely was killed because my aggressor could see me several seconds before I saw them. That annoyed me, but I just switched to 3PP. Problem solved. Then I started playing with a friend who preferred 1PP and I got to go back to the perspective that I preferred in the first place. We still run into hostile enemy players. I still see evidence of server hoppers constantly. The servers we frequent tend to have regular traffic, although they don't get full. Based on a lot of what I have read and my own experience, I find it likely that some players who would otherwise enjoy 1PP only servers avoid them because of inconsistent or poor framerates. It is much harder to tolerate that in the first person perspective. As optimization improves, as with the implementation of DirectX 11 and 12, I think more people will give it a try, if for no other reason than they get to gear up two characters. You seem like a pretty negative person from the posts I've read from you over the last couple months, so I guess it's only natural that you make assumptions like you did above. Not everyone who plays on those servers is doing it just to avoid deaths from peeking. My last Stable 3PP character was alive for over 2 months before I F11'ed and gave away my gear. My main motivation for playing 1PP only is that the level of immersion I experience is enhanced dramatically by the first person perspective. It's just a bonus that I don't have to deal with the periscope anymore. -

ColdAtrophy replied to FlimFlamm's topic in General Discussion
It wouldn't affect me so on a personal level, I would feel neutral about it. From a design standpoint, the 3PP camera just needs a rework (which is already happening/happened). It doesn't need to go away completely. -
I promptly haul ass out of any coastal city so I'm really not intimately familiar with what it looked like before. Cool basketball court though. Wasn't expecting to see anything like that.

Just so you know, PhysX is NOT the same as physics. Physx is a proprietary physics engine that some developers choose to integrate into their games for use on an Nvidia GPU. If a developer has not chosen to use Physx, then you changing the settings for it will do nothing for their game. Off the top of my head, I can only think of two games that use PhysX: Borderlands 2 and Batman Arkham City. I'm sure there are many more, but DayZ is not one of them. I had to clear this up as it is simply not correct. I hope you don't feel I am being a prick, because that is not my intention.

Seems legit. #sarcasm

He never saw it coming because you shot him in the back, unprovoked. Such skills.

Which tweet was that? I checked Eugen Harton's and Brian Hicks' Twitter and neither said anything that led me to believe anything was happening this weekend. The DevTracker doesn't show anything either. Just curious.

OMFG. 4 digit ping would make it literally impossible to play 95% of the games on the market. I can't....I just.....What the actual fuck? I know Canada isn't exactly cutting edge metropolis across the entire nation (and neither is the US for that matter) but....damn. That's more than an entire second of lag.
-
Also, you might try running some bandwidth tests to make sure you are actually getting what you pay for from your ISP. I used to have that problem a couple of years ago. My ISP sold me 6mbps but I usually got less than 2. It made playing online impossible during hours of peak usage.

Many of the people who really enjoy 1PP servers are busy with experimental right now. I suspect that as optimization and FPS increases, more players will enjoy the unique experience that is 1PP only. The biggest reason, besides the inability to use the 3PP camera exploits, that people avoid the 1PP servers is that low or inconsistent FPS is much harder to deal with from that perspective.

Gearing up is the best part of this game
ColdAtrophy replied to MoOnKat's topic in General Discussion
The only place I have ever found them in 0.55 is in these:http://dayz.gamepedia.com/Officer%27s_Tent However, I have no idea what the 0.56/0.57 update will look like in stable. In experimental, I found one in a garage the other day. -
I'm really going to miss this character.
