POLL: DayZ and BI experience so far
ColdAtrophy replied to ColonelBurton's topic in General Discussion
Exactly right. Consistency. That's what a project like this lacks by its very nature. Case in point: I'd be happy as a pig in shit if I could run a 10 player server with 0.55 Stable on it until beta. Obviously, there are many reasons why they could not facilitate multiple build versions out there on joinable servers, but my point is that build provided the baseline experience that I require to be satisfied while they work. At the end of the day, it's my own impatience and the fact that I am emotionally invested in the game's development. Fortunately, I don't feel the need to lash out like many do because I am quite capable of seeing the whole picture. Unfortunately, that doesn't help me play DayZ with zombies right now this very second damn it! :D -
POLL: DayZ and BI experience so far
ColdAtrophy replied to ColonelBurton's topic in General Discussion
I voted that I am less likely to buy an Early Access game even though I also voted that I am quite impressed with BI's work. I feel the need to explain where I'm coming from. I love DayZ. It's an extremely unique and amazing experience. I tell everyone who is willing to listen that they should check it out. And I've gotten far, far more than my money's worth out of the $30 I spent. I've paid twice as much money for games that I barely played in comparison. That said, it's been an experience that I don't want to go through as a consumer again. I realize that the task of maintaining a playable build and continuing development simultaneously has surely been a monumental undertaking for BI and I give them props for having the balls to do it. However, as Hicks is fond of saying, they have tread into completely unknown territory and, as a consumer, I'm not sure that I really ever want to see this particular patch of grass again. It's flat out demoralizing and exponentially more disappointing when your favorite game has been randomly rendered unplayable due to the state of a build. For example, I think I played less than 5 hours of 0.57 Stable. There just wasn't anything to do but PvP. The current build, while better, lacks one of my favorite components of the game: zombies. I find myself disappointed with a patch, wait 6 weeks for the next one, only to be a bit disappointed again. Allow me to reiterate that I am in no way complaining. I fully understand why things have gone the way they have. It's just a tough thing to deal with as a gamer in love with the game. I'm a pretty picky player and I play only or two games at a time and get heavily invested in them. So when the game I am currently laser focused on is suddenly missing large chunks of what makes me enjoy it, it sucks big time. BI is doing a great job, DayZ is fantastic, and I do not regret my purchase in any way, shape, or form. Sometimes I feel like I should have paid more money for this game. I'm just not going to put myself through this again. The next EA game that catches my eye will not be a purchase for me. I will just wait until the game hits beta or full release. I can't handle being hooked on a product that can change drastically and at the drop of a dime. -
I've gathered ~20 netting this week, making gun wraps for my friends and I and a Ghillie suit for myself. Hail the mighty dynamic event, bane of the hopper!

So is there any workaround for the client performance nowdays?
ColdAtrophy replied to haxborn's topic in General Discussion
I have the same setup. Here's my exact settings: Day.cfg GPU_MaxFramesAhead=3;GPU_DetectedFramesAhead=3; (YourName).DayZProfileviewDistance=1500preferredObjectViewdistance=1300 I have Vsync enabled and use 1080p, 100%. QualityObjects - LowTerrain - NormalShadows - NormalClouds - Normal Rendering Anti-Aliasing - Very HighAlpha to Coverage - All trees + grassEdge Smoothing - FXAA HighHDR Quality - LowAmbient Occlusion - EnabledPost-Process Quality - Very High TexturesVideo Memory - AutoTexture Detail - Very HighTexture Filtering - Very High My minimum framerate is about 35 FPS in cities and the game looks fantastic. I get 45-60 the vast majority of the time and the game plays buttery smooth. Very few fluctuations in FPS. I have two other friends that recently followed my optimization recommendations (one Intel/Nvidia, one Intel/AMD) and both are very pleased with the results. -
Go North. Not Stary Sobor north either. Like Stary Yar north. Look in the sheds that have walls made from horizontally placed boards that are mismatched leaving gaps that you can see through into the shed.

I'm giving this a bump because I want to keep this going for a bit longer. Hope that's okay @themods.

What are your thoughts on the state of the game?
ColdAtrophy replied to reiber's topic in General Discussion
I find it difficult to even talk about this stuff anymore. There are too many unknowns since the devs only tell us what they feel we need to know in as much detail as they think is necessary and only when they feel the time is right. Outrage culture on the internet is a bitch to deal with. Do I love where the game is right now? Not really. Will this even remotely resemble the final product? Not likely. I don't even know what such core basics like movement, running speed, duration of running, food & water consumption, item scarcity, etc. will look like next week, let alone at beta. -
Exactly. I mean, ffs, I spent two hours running around gathering stuff to make an impromptu "fishing only" camp this morning, where we are only allowed to eat baked beans, caught and cooked fish, and drink Rasputins. I can't imagine anyone wanting to watch that on a stream, but I damn sure loved doing it. EDIT: When the beer is gone, the fishing trip is over.

If we're all being honest, I think that, deep down, that's all most of us really wanted to hear. The things we like to do in DayZ aren't as much fun to watch on Twitch. Hope you are feeling better.

One big fundamental flaw of the game. Character reset on joining new server.
ColdAtrophy replied to fetgalningen's topic in General Discussion
Have you found any mines whatsoever? Several of us have been curious about whether they are spawning but I haven't gotten around to asking. -

ColdAtrophy replied to fetgalningen's topic in General Discussion
Hell yes it has. I adamantly oppose murder in this game and even I do this sometimes. It's literally the only way to combat the plague of locusts that strip every military location bare within days or hours of a public patch. -

We Dedicated Few: A Guide to Debug Island
ColdAtrophy replied to Tatanko's topic in General Discussion
I wish I had something more constructive to say but when I read "too much PVE" resulting in a ban, my blood boiled. Very cool though guys. Maybe I will try this at some point. -
So you put barrels into the branches of trees and laid rifles down randomly in the woods? I hate to be an ass, but that's not a base. That's just randomly throwing stuff in the woods.

Rail, bipod+flashlight and AKM magazines
ColdAtrophy replied to IgnobleBasterd's topic in General Discussion
Same here. Not one single mag. I've looted every military location many times over (not to mention the other three guys in my group who do their own thing too) and found upwards of 50 helis at this point since we started the server about 12 days ago. -
Rail, bipod+flashlight and AKM magazines
ColdAtrophy replied to IgnobleBasterd's topic in General Discussion
Thank you. Yes. I get it. I included the part about how to properly put a handguard on, even though the OP had one on his AKM already, because of this guy's post: This, while possibly working, seems like the nuclear option. -
I can't get become a tiger due to it attacking me either, but I damn sure wouldn't want to be trapped in a backyard with one that hadn't eaten in 3 weeks.

Rail, bipod+flashlight and AKM magazines
ColdAtrophy replied to IgnobleBasterd's topic in General Discussion
Okay, so once you figure out how to put on Rail Handguards, the rest is simple. To put on a Rail Handguard, put the weapon on your back and double click the currently attached handguard. That handguard will now go into your hands. Drag the Rail Handguard onto the weapon. Boom. The MP5-k can take the Weapon Flashlight with the Rail Handguard. The AK74 cannot accept the ATLAS or the Weapon Flashlight even with the Rail Handguard. The AK101 cannot accept the ATLAS or the Weapon Flashlight even with the Rail Handguard. My group just got an AKM but have not tried the ATLAS or the Weapon Flashlight yet. Based on what I've seen, I wouldn't be surprised if it, too, cannot accept the rail dependant attachments. When I get back on in a little while, I will update this post after I fool with it a bit. We have an M4 also, but have not found the Rail Handguard for it so I have not yet been able to test. EDIT: I don't think the AKM can take the bipod or flashlight either. I've tried everything I could think of, and it's just not working. -
Holy shit. Even after 800 hours, I still learn new stuff about this game on an almost daily basis and I go out of my way to try to do everything at least once. I had no idea this was even a mechanic.

The game already has this. It's called Object Quality.
-
If you let the bickering continue, you may not get the exposure that this needs. I messaged orlok about getting this pinned. Probably best to keep that in mind.

is there a way to retrieve items from the hidden part of tent inventory?
ColdAtrophy replied to edwin3's topic in General Discussion
That hasn't worked since they replaced the inventory matrix in 0.57. -
Remember when one bullet killed you?
ColdAtrophy replied to Grimey Rick's topic in General Discussion
Well, since you're asking I will offer it. In general, it is acknowledged and understood in game design that lower TTKs discourage emergent gameplay. For a sandbox game wherein one of the core pillars is emergent play, a slightly higher TTK is best. Compare TTK in CoD to Battlefield, for example. CoD's is much lower and, as a result, you end up with a ton of camping and a narrowed skill gap. Lower TTKs make it more likely that new or casual players will be able to get kills also. In my opinion, were it not for authenticity, I'd want double the current TTK across the board. I'm probably at little biased though. I came into my own as an FPS player with Halo's high TTK, highly skill dependent arena combat -
The Psychology of Understanding Alpha
ColdAtrophy replied to Weyland Yutani (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
This is why I love these forums. Intelligent people open to actual conversation rather than belligerently sticking to their guns regardless of the information presented. I've convinced others that maybe they don't have all the facts and they've changed their minds. What's more is that no one shamed them for it, but rather commended them. I've been convinced that I was wrong about stuff on here too and admitted it. I don't care what anyone says about gamers, the internet, or DayZ. With the exception of a few bad apples, this place is leaps and bounds ahead of what I've seen on the internet over the last few years in terms of social interaction among posters and how well it is moderated. Have beans! :beans: :beans: :beans: :beans: :beans: -
Bingo. I admire your work. This should help new players get the most out of their systems with the least fuss. Beans! :beans: :beans: :beans: :beans: :beans:
