You need a stock for that thing fast. A repeater could easily beat that naked AKM at 30 yards. I bet you got the nerves about loggin in and goin for a walk. Happy hunting.

Standalone updated enough?(since Sep '14)

I try to make it a habit to only engage zeds from indoors, or in a secluded area. Word has it that when you kill one, a new one replaces it somewhere in the vicinity (reported to be as small as 100 m radius), and since they look around, they have a better than 60%chance of immediately seeing you. Having fights in open fields or while running through valley towns will likely draw every available zombie to you, gunshots make this worse. Houses seem to muffle gunshot aggro to a lower radius, and killing all of the zeds in a short period of time will keep them from respawning and hearing more gunshots or seeing you still dealing with the others. Even though this is a placeholder model for zombie AI and spawn patterns, these tactics will likely remain vital to your survival. They have fixed most of the physical problems with the zombies, but I've still had one or two walk right through a wall at me in .53. @OP: I'm sorry your hitbox got stuck; that hasn't happened to me for quite a while now, but sometimes hotkey lag and desynch will get me into trouble. The game is pretty playable as it is, but your reaction to the death in ten minutes makes me wonder what you'd think when you spawn in right next to a zombie, with nothing but a flashlight. In my experience, the game seems fixed enough to be fun and is getting better on a weekly basis, the next couple of months should see huge improvements. -
Do backpacks work as containers right now

Okay, so I just got done checking again, and the loot spwans have again become more plentiful in the area around the stockpile.I guess all you need to farm loot is some seeds... -
And once all the "real men" are dead, those wise enough to choose their battles will have plenty of freedom to redefine the term. I could see this mechanic working kinda like a vehicle: an animation to get in, and a loss of zed aggro; but only with the options to open hiding place, get in, and close. Under beds, inside wardrobes and dumpsters, there are tons of places to hide. Seems good as long as we can't scope the doors to a high-traffic building from the safety and concealment of a dumpster two blocks away.

What do you think is the story behind this picture?

Did he try to takeout the last zombie by throwing a sledgehammer at its head, and got killed by the rebound? -
Do backpacks work as containers right now

For the past three weeks I have been maintaining a supply depot of sorts on a persistent server, taking with me only the best that I can carry each tuesday night. This last week we ended up with about a dozen bags and various guns, including a couple SKS and Blaze rifles left over from the first day of looting. Persistent servers can be almost completely looted out in a couple of days, with more loot spawning in by Sunday. It was peculiar how much loot started spawning in the area of the stash location after a few days and a dozen full backpacks. I should have taken a screenshot, but we ran across many building with 2-10 times as much loot as should spawn; including a hunter treestand with 6 backpacks and a couple dozen items total. I'm testing a theory that packed military tents, or just piles of gear, might cause 'lootgasms' on persistent servers if left for a few days. The only backpack persistence issues I encountered involved the reading of the bags' contents from left to right, top to bottom. Imagine a full mountain backpack that is 5 wide and 7 deep, with an MP5 in the bottom left corner of the bag; it sits three slots high and four slots wide. If two 30 round magazines are placed in the space next to the gun, the first magazine sticks up one block above the MP5. The game will see this magazine first and place it in the backpack first, obstructing the space needed for the gun to fit in the bag. Even if there is a space left for the gun, it seems that larger items are discarded to make space. I have also had first aid kits and hats/jackets lost in the same manner due to watter bottles sticking up above a row. I haven't left many loose items on the ground, but a bag of lime lasted four days untouched. I hope this is helpful for those that haven't had much experience on persistent servers. It isn't completely ready, but it is still decently playable on a week-by-week basis. -
Next week: drum mags. I also might have a problem getting images to show up. There we go. A couple stacks of ammo derped out on the ride down.

I think I might have a problem with shotguns...
emuthreat replied to emuthreat's topic in General Discussion
Yeah, the pump action gives enough time for an enemy to empty a Makarov or 1911, but with a speedloader or extra shotgun, you can have two more ready to go pretty quickly. Anyone less than 50 feet away will hurtin for certain. -
With the upcoming *weekly* persistence wipe *of tents/objects on ground* this evening, I felt that it was time to share my weeks bounty with the recently deceased. Free supplies will be delivered to Electro PD until my surplus, or luck, runs out. Enjoy those Boomsticks, bambis. DayZ US Central 1-55 (Persistence: ON) 50.97.95.131:2302

The idea came to me after I made up my "keep bag" and saw how much was left; even after my buddy already handpicked his keep, we had lots of decent gear left in the supply depot. As the network grows and more costal stashes are established, I will try to set up regular scavenger hunts for monday/tuesday fun. Now I just need a bag full of pens...

What if it is the point to attract every zombie in a 500m radius? I can already see the use for it. When zeds are fixed and the numbers increased tenfold, the safest way to loot a large city would be to back up to a doorway with a couple chainsaw guys and barricade yourself inside a house with a mountain of corpses. Given that the infinite spwan BS goes away. Clear!

As the now-present picture shows, I prefer mine sawed. They still have a decent punch, but not at distance. I use them for killing close up zeds, or for indoor security. They will break legs, but do little health damage if used well; giving you time to negotiate. I try to carry extra pants to be nice. They will also make a wall-peeker think twice about opening that door. ;) -
I was commenting on your lamentations about helicopter loot being inaccessible due to widespread admin abuse. About 2/3 of the non persistent servers I have been on would routinely kick off all but three or four players right after a restart. This is because the admin and his friends want a safe window to loot out high-value spawns, or do the helicopter circuit without any risk. It's not hard to figure out who the bad admin is when it happens like clockwork, and there is always one name that shows up when kicking happens. This makes it very difficult to be the first one onsite after a restart.

What is the nicest thing you have done in DayZ
emuthreat replied to LORDPrometheus's topic in General Discussion
Did this exchange take place in elektro, right outside the school across from the police station? The plural Hi-cap vests sounds familiar, especially if they were full of proctector cases full of grenades. My nicest thing done was at NWAF jail by the well. Guy came inside and looted the cell first for something to drink, and I was waiting for him around the corner. I broke his legs with a sawn-off and then got him to stop crawling and shooting at me with a makarov. Went outside, killed a zed at the door with the guy having clear shot at my back; made him a splint and gave him the extra pants I was carrying. He was cool enough about it that we met up with a friend of mine and looted tent city, then we showed him to a bag of ammo and let him take all he wanted. I'd say that went as well as it could have for both parties. -
I'm wondering how many runs I can make until I won't have time to run back if I get killed.

^YES^ Now stop arguing semantics and go have a nice leisurely scavenger hunt!

Cannot use an improvised suppressor with a mosin compensator
emuthreat replied to trev186's topic in General Discussion
That surpressor would have exploded if you put it on a garden hose. I think you may have forgotten to make a hole in the "business end." Gas needs to escape. Next time try stuffing the bottle with cotton balls, and drilling out the bottom of the bottle. Cotton may ignite and smolder. For better performance: Take a PVC pipe smaller than the bottle mouth, but decenlty larger than the bore; kerf the sides with a hacksaw, spaced about 7 mm apart, leaving the first and last 30mm of the pipe untouched, drill a 10mm hole clear through the pipe at the 'reserved' end farthest from the barrel; insert pipe in plastic bottle and secure to both ends of the bottle. Last step: Make sure you are aware of the laws regarding manufacture of imporvised surpressors in your jurisdiction. (You might want to do this part first) -
Persistence OFF Restart=kick everyone for the first fifteen minutes.

Berry picking already is extreme. You ever fall into a bramble? Blackberry bushes aren't to be trifled with; all the thorns point down and into the bush. Thorns aren't there to deter animals from eating the berries, the berries are there to lure the bush's prey into the thorny mess, to fertilize the next year's growth.

I had survived plenty of memory crashes while driving a V3S, but when I had a crash as a passenger...

memory leak + non-persistent inventory
emuthreat replied to Wookieenoob's topic in General Discussion
Somehow, the trucks don't kill me when the game crashes. I just had one yesterday where I lost controls the truck kept going. When I got back in the game, I spawned back at a hedge row that the truck was going towards; and the truck was back in the field where I was driving it when the crash started. The next time it happened, it spawned me about 3 km away--where I got into the truck. The truck appears to have just kept driving. I ran back to the crash location and kept my heading, but didn't see anything for quite a while, so I gave up. At least I didn't die, but it was still a huge waste of time. I was going to taxi a respawned friend and bring him a bag of gear. It made for a very long mission without the truck. -
I think that cargo pants should take up 4 slots when full, and two when empty, as well as 6-pocket shirts; IRL it wouldn't matter much if you had some matches, a few rags, a stone, a couple 1911 mags, and a boonie hat in your pants... They might take twice the space, but you can pack them with pockets full; I've done it plenty IRL: Loadouts.

My regular persistent server went offline sunday evening. :( Oh well. Tents are an easy find.

The houses with the barn (gambrel) roofs have been pretty productive, with the "L" shaped couch. I found 3 damaged LRS and a pristine PU (Grandma's house shelf) last night.

Harvesting sap would be useful too, both for food and resin.
