how to get dayz to run better without turning graphics down loads?
emuthreat replied to JarheadLeeds's topic in General Discussion
I think the genreal consensus it that the only thing that will really help you get better DayZ performance is PATIENCE. If you are really having problems running the game, don't turn stuff down to the minimums, as it is usually counterproductive. I take solace in the fact that as I master the art of playing DayZ with a single-digit framerate, the inevitable performance upgrades will instantly transform me into a Chernarussian ninja; and everyone I encounter will then probably accuse me of hacking. Just do what you can with what you got, for the time being. -
They are each pretty well-suited for different tasks, and I just can't bring myself to travel light; as there is currently no incentive to do so. It's okay, I am one of those so-called functional gun-aholics. I mostly carry the sawn-off Mosin just to make others mad that I would defile it in such a way. ;)

As off-putting as it may sound, it would be realistic to have many of those things in the game; including ruined pants, and other evidence of people who were forced to hole-up in places without proper facilities. Maybe come across a pair of jeans that's missing the back pockets, next to an area you would do best to avoid. It might be a little gross, but it would totally make sense for piles of crap to randomly spawn inside structures. Only way that it would be worth the effort and ick-factor, would be if you could get a chance of contracting an infection from crouching or going prone in such locations--especially if blood had been drawn, and healthy status has not yet returned to your toon. Anyways, this seems like there are some good suggestions that would help to fill-out the atmosphere. I'm pretty sure there are still significant structural and hopefully some small topographical changes--IRL, hills have trails, even game trails, that cut a fairly defined shallow route zig-zagging up them--coming to the map, so don't hold your breath for the finishing touches quite yet. Also, great suggestions. edit: three "G's" for zag

Good to know, I was feeling a little paranoid about hearing whispers, I thought it was the walkers talking; turns out it's just some weirdos.

I'm not too sure about that. I've inquired in the past about my dismally lacking running speed, compared to people with whom I've been running. Even as a fresh spawn, running with a fully geared escort, I cannot keep pace unless my framerate is running above the mid-twenties. Trust me, I'll be among the first to know when weight becomes and issue. My current character has died only once since .57 hit stable, but I had a couple buds camp my gear so I still got it all. I usually carry a M70 or Blaze fitted with a hunting scope, also my trusty sawn-off Izh shotty, a sawn-off mosin, CR75, longhorn, and occasionally a magnum or a flaregun used as a gun case (cringe), in addition to an ammo box, first aid kit, and 3 water bottles, plus a half dozen cans of peaches and varoius other stacks of ammo or random food items. I'm actually enjoying the lack of persistence, despite my hoarder tendencies. If the new stamina system is introduced in full, I would be at a major disadvantage without persistence. So whatever early stamina system they have implemented has not seemed to have any effect on my run speed. Though I am suspicious that my hydration has been depleting faster lately, I wouldn't know about the energy depletion, because I am a piggy who eats every single can of tuna and spaghetti that I find in HiIlux beds and long barns. I hoard peechez.

Well we'll all be waiting to hear when it will finally be fruitful to dump more money into our rigs; for purposes of DayZ. It's still pretty enjoyable for me, because I've gotten used to surviving at 7 FPS. Even these modest improvements that we've seen lately are a boon to my play experience. Looking forward to having a reason to get a bit more modernized setup. Maybe I'll revisit the idea a good few weeks after optimization is mentioned in status reports. For the time being, I'll keep my Benjamins safely tucked away.

Wasn't this the dedveloper appreciation thread? Maybe we need a new experimental patch to get this discussion moving back in the right direction.

Do you order a steak, knowing that you'll love it no matter how charred it is when served, just because it's advertised as a ribeye on the menu? Don't compromise on quality, ever. The people feeding you that shit will just learn that they can give you increasingly poor product for the same, or even higher prices over time. Here in the US, our landfills are overstuffed with cheap, disposable household appliances because people have been taught that it is better to buy and destroy three $20 blenders every year, than to spend $60 on a blender that will last for ten years. Turn UP your settings. It works. Because money, Rick. It has only been somewhat recently that the fringe market of gaming has started producing such enormous profits and gotten all the mainstream publicity from AAA flagship franchises. Now we have a bunch of big-ass corporations just trying to make a fat wad of cash as quickly and easily as they can, to add more zeroes to the accounts of the already obscenely rich ruling class which controls much of their stock. Remember, unregulated capitalism will always end up ruining the wonderful creations it allowed to come to being--in the intrest of squeezing out every last drop of revenue from anything that even threatens to become successful. We must be those regulators that punish such hubris and greed. Good on you for making the return; now that you actually CAN return games. That's the biggest step in the right direction that I have ever seen steam take. Returning the unsatisfactory product is step one, boycotting the company who was arrogant enough to think that it was okay to deliver you such crap is step two, telling them exactly what made you so displeased with their product/service is step three. Step four is just being glad that you don't live in an area with an ISP whose service, and customer service are a joke, but somehow still hold a solid monopoly on broadband internet service. To not protest, is to attest to your own complicity in becoming a slave of the market.

I noticed the same thing a few times this last week in Old Cathedral. Different buildings too. One two-tone brown house with the central stairs to loft, and one garage with man-door on the side, they zeds just stopped in the open doorway. I instantly wondered if they had swapped them for vampire rules, and they were just waiting to be invited inside. At the at the large rusty catwalk building, I ran right past one and then inside. He just sauntered around by the door until I gave him the axe.

how long does it take to walk from balota airstrip to the airstrip near lopatino?
emuthreat replied to thomas05's topic in General Discussion
If you would like some instruction on orienteering, and in the use of the many available online maps that are standard use for DayZ players, just ask; there are plenty of people glad to help. Do not come on to simply ask for a fish, as this will weaken your resolve, and make you dependent on others--which is not wise in a hostile environment such as DayZ. There are many here who would gladly "teach you to fish", if you had asked. There are also many who would sooner gut you like a fish for taking the coward's path and asking someone else to carry your water for you. If you could not guess already, math class was probably not the best place for me to make freinds. Best of luck in learning how to play the game for yourself. -
It will be about 300% more pointless than a Kamyshovo spawn on a populated server. Where after getting a few bites and maybe a backpack, you are killed by geared players who go to the coast for easy kills so they won't be completely lying when they brag about having over 150 kills--or whatever made up number they will exaggetate it to. Death is almost guaranteed. Also, what Rick said.

Multi-Person Mechanics to discourage KOS
emuthreat replied to FlimFlamm's topic in General Discussion
I'm not too sure if tehy want to go down that Humanity road. I kinda want to see the soft skill development in the same way that SOD had it. Where if you have a character that you dumped hours of practice into, who has increased stamina through practice running a lot, and quieter movement from sneaking practice, you will value that individual life more, and be less prone to risk it for some scope lolz. Still, this would do nothing to deter those who give less than, or equal to ZERO F***S; there will always be those players. -
Multi-Person Mechanics to discourage KOS
emuthreat replied to FlimFlamm's topic in General Discussion
Perhaps adding meaning to lifes can promote more teamwork. I know that it has been discussed before, but adding soft skill trees should make some people at least ask about your skills before killing; especially if there is some task they need skilled help to complete. I'm for the idea of having each beachside bambi start with a random set of strengths, and one developed vocational skill to be lost upon death, would help to discourage KOS; or it could just make people suicide until they get the desired skill. Some people may have the playstyle that results in their saying "oh no they killed our blacksmith, those bastards! Now how are we gonna forge broadheads?" While other people may have the playstyle where they spawn in and say "oh crap, I'm a stupid blacksmith again, better go jump off a roof and see if I can get that marksman spawn I want from every life." It looks like I may have contradicted myself, but it seems that I may have actually found more reasons for the devs to add some mechanic to disincentivize suicides for the desired spawn conditions. Maybe something similar to the spawncounter would deter suicide-for-spawnpoint behavior. Like if a there were some way for BE to compare the player's overall in-game time, and average lifespan, and then make a decision that after two or three consecutive Very Short Lives, that the person in question obviously doesn't want to be alive in this apocalypse. Perhaps these people who exhibit signs of not wanting to live in this cruel world could be spawned a good five-minute swim from land, so they either have to wait a long time to freeze, or invest some time into getting to a suicide location, and instead decide to use their swim as a head-start to actually playing the game, and surviving. -
Multi-Person Mechanics to discourage KOS
emuthreat replied to FlimFlamm's topic in General Discussion
Wasn't this thread supposed to be about the possible inclusion of teamwork as an incentive for people to cooperate? Stuff like needing two people to move something to gain acces to loot, or not being able to move a disabled vehicle alone would be along those lines. I'm hoping to see trees cut down into logs, that require two people to carry. This would allow the buliding of simple forts, or dugout pillboxes; though those might be better-suited to people who are already acquainted and cooperating. Maybe all those row boats along the shore could eventually be dragged back into the water with a couple people working at it. -

Some people care, and are interested in the sociological implications of video game behavior. You obviously do not care. I humbly invite you to recuse yourself from this discussion, and if applicable, the voter-base in whatever place you live. -
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...
emuthreat replied to gcriseightysix's topic in General Discussion
So what makes this the worst of times? I don't get it, survival is working great on all fronts; though I haven't seen anything other than cows and chickens. This update is the best yet, agreed. -
My dissatisfaction with the map of DayZ .
emuthreat replied to adriel0000's topic in General Discussion
I feel that DayZ development would be crazy to not borrow some of the better concepts from State of Decay; juggernaut farm-boy zombies foremost. At the same time, I trust that they want many of the same things that you and many other people want to see added to this game. -

emuthreat replied to FlimFlamm's topic in General Discussion
Not trying to be rude, dude, but this is a real thing. Emergence is a real emerging area of sutdy that has unlimited implicatons. Well technically it is limited only by the amount of things in existence, their individual properties, and their proximity to one-another. Please add to the knowledge base or ignore. One could even argue that your sardonic response is an emergent behavior when you expose luddites to sapiophiles. :P -
Emergence in DayZ; What is it? Is it good? KOS'ing?
emuthreat replied to FlimFlamm's topic in General Discussion
I see what you did there... Yeah, a bullhorn would be awesome; can't even settle for planting a radio to scare people nowadayz. I wonder what kind of emergent gameplay would come from slingshots and firecrackers. It would be kinda like throwing your voice, but with gunshot-like noises. When we've locked down a field with a 4+ member squad, it is fairly easy to triangulate someone's position, knowing the exact position of all our players, and reporting on who heard the gunshots and who didn't. -
So did mine...

Emergence in DayZ; What is it? Is it good? KOS'ing?
emuthreat replied to FlimFlamm's topic in General Discussion
I really like the idea of facilitating some sort of global chat without using the immersion-breaking text bar so common to other games. I do not support starting with such a device; everyone should wash ashore alone and afraid. Since cannon dictates that this is "Day Zero," GPS/communication satellites should still be functional. What I would like to see is a powered handset that provides a GPS screen, direct two-way radio (such as is found with the Garmin Rhino series), and a global SMS function. The reward to finding this would be that you are no longe alone in the world; the risk would be, as always, the wolf in sheeps clothing. Now if they would only put batteries back in the game at a reasonable level... edit: Grammar; gotta have those semicolons.
