[Proper Names 101] Quonset Hut vs Officer Tent
emuthreat replied to Weyland Yutani (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
You are right; the American name is a place and the English is a person. Syllabically, Nissen and Quonset are equally brief descriptors of the huts. Having a half-dozen different names for them doesn't make very much sense. I like your Chrenarussian name idea, but it would be difficult to get it to take. In the Pacific, in ww2, American Quonset huts would rust out too quickly, and were replaced by all spruce models, according to the wiki-sci. -
[Proper Names 101] Quonset Hut vs Officer Tent
emuthreat replied to Weyland Yutani (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Actually a Nissen hut is distinct from a quonset hut, in that Nissen huts are slightly more than half cylindrical, as they curve inward slightly at the base of the long walls; Quonset huts meet the ground at a 90 degree angle and are ecactly semi-circular in profile. I hope this has cleared up your prejudices... The rest of this post is for the "It doesn't matter what you call stuff" crowd: My incorrect name for them is "half-domes" because it describes the shape, and only has two syllables. "Officers Barracks", has five syllables, making it much less desirable term than both "Quonset Huts" and "Halfdomes". For those of you that think it is somehow cool to be willfully ignorant (yes, you here have internet access, and therefore access to all the same information as anyone else), language is a tool that we use for the exchange of information. The simpler, quicker to learn and use, easier to understand precisely, and more commonly accepted language, or functions of a language, can truly and rightly be held to be superior for serving the primary purpose of language by merit of being the most accurately understood, and with the least amount of effort and time investment by the users. Now, anybody is free to choose to misuse their words, misspell their words, butcher their grammar as they wish, but only with the implicit understanding that they think their time is more important than that of others. By willfully digressing from the commonly accepted usage of language, or by neglecting to properly learn the elements of their chosen language to a level appropriate to their age and experience, a person communicates that they feel themselves to be superior; in that the others around them are expected to do the extra work of interpolating the actual message being conveyed, despite their own neglect for the commonly accepted conventions of language. Do you know why we have specific names for things? Because it save us all a lot of time and effort. It is the reason why we don't call table chairs "four legged wooden sitting apparatus with back;" the Germans tried this, and they are constantly made fun of for their penchant for long, explicitly descriptive, compound words. Do you know why the Chinese have ridiculously complicated keyboards? Because their language has way too many basic units to fit on a standard keyboard. Language efficiency is a real thing whether you accept it or not, and it will waste waste people's time, in favor our your own convenience, if you choose to ignore it. Of course it is still as effective if everyone in your group is using an incorrect term for something. But once you try to communicate that term outside the closed group, people will not understand you. This, above all else, is why many people try to teach their children the standard version of a language; so when they meet other people, those people don't think they are stupid, or weird. Sure you can indulge you child by calling a toaster a bread-popper, and a refrigerator a food-keeper, and a dog a fur-barker, but when they use those terms around others, they might be presumed to be mentally deficient, or immature. -
LOL, yes! I used the new UI for like five minutes and hated it. Won't go back until major cosmetic changes are made, or it is forced. If it's forced, it might just get me to take an extended break.

Try those medical buildings found at the various campgrounds, you know, inland...

Before you cry foul for lack of optimization, or worse, start upgrading hardware, make sure your system is physically clean. I recently went down the rabbit hole of new Vcard and putting system and apps on SSDs, but only saw temporary and marginal gains. I reinstalled windows four times on three different, out of the box, solid state drives, even letting some Indian dude from MS support remote access my rig. I was getting failure to boot issues, and had to replace the charging jack (finally) in my laptop that had been dead for a year, so I could make a boot disk to run Memtest86. When I ran memtest, it would power down my rig after five to seven minutes. At this point, I realized that four years was maybe too long to have never fully disassembled my rig, down to a MOBO in a case; my thermal paste was all dried and the heat sink came off with far too little effort. After a couple hours of careful and thorough cleaning, I discovered my PSU was dead; I did the jumper test. My intermittent history of BSODs was likely caused by neglecting the conditions of two basic components; the PSU, and the CPU cooler. Long story short: My CPU radiator was clogged behind the fan, despite regular dustings-out, and the power supply then went kaputt after removing it for an equally thorough cleaning. Got a new PSU (not a great one, or at a great price, as I bought local in an emergency) and now I am running around 40 fps, up from an average of 10-20. Download Open Hardware Monitor, and check your voltages and temps; this will give you a good idea of where to start looking for your problems.

Maybe not the draw distance, but something has to be done to equalize the experience of players. Take the example of shadow distance where two strangers are in a wooded grove, but one of them has his shadows completely off, while the other has them set at 250. The guy with the shadows turned off will have a humongous advantage in first detection, compared to the guy whose settings yield a camouflage advantage for everyone besides himself. I will often catch myself running through the treeline, zig-zagging to stay in the shadows; then feel like an idiot because I remember that most people probably don't even use that shit to begin with. When the SOP is to turn everything off, or to the lowest possible settings to improve performance and ease of player detection, the game itself should just set a graphical complexity benchmark for each server, and leave it at that; anything else is just tying one's own hands.

When you know you play too much Dayz :p
emuthreat replied to [email protected]'s topic in General Discussion
This spring when I was preparing a garden in my backyard, I noticed how the shovel would always damage or ruin earthworms, but the pitchfork produced pristine worms everytime. Among the things I never really bought before playing DayZ, that I now keep in my kitchen: canned peaches, powdered milk, cans of spaghetti. Makes a filling, but gross, casserole. -
New renderer - When will we see it or at least get some kind of timeline?
emuthreat replied to robophant's topic in General Discussion
I think you misunderstood the roadmap; that timeline was their own internal development goals to be met. They have likely completed much of the basic parts of those things that they planned on, but are still waiting to be able to implement them on the public builds. You can read a horse some infomation, but you can't make him understand it. -
400 meter default. You better be aiming for the knees at 200 meters.

Now I won't exactly call myself a bad driver, but shit happens. Given enough time, enough shit eventually happens to render every truck on a server inoperable. How can I fix this? I have already searched the forums, and wikis, to no avail; and I have also given it a try fixing them by trial and error, mostly error. Does anyone know the specific steps I need to take to get a tire repair kit to work? I'm on my way to go get a lug wrench from a stash barrel, and try my hand at tire removal, but I am not optimistic that it will work.
-
Maybe I have to go dump some booletts into them instead of fixing. I still have a couple that work, but all the ones with ruined front tires have yet to respawn.
-
I prefer to try and play the game as the final product will likely be, rather than just giving in to the "nothingelse to do" attitude. I can see a large number of people acclimated to close range chaos finding this game very unsatisfying wehn they can't do anything fun without dying twice. Soft skills are for wimps they will say, while secretly crying themselves to sleep.
-
Why ruin things that cannot be made anew? This is an apocalypse, once it's gone, it's gone. Once it is broken, who is going to fix it? I'll make it my personal duty to roam the wastelands, summarily executing anyone found to be destroying technology or architechure without life-saving good cause.
-
I was trying to repair ruined tires, thanks.

Come play on DayZ US Central 1-55 with me. This has been my preferred official server since .53. The only time it went down was in .55 when the jail lootsplosions were crashing the game; I complained and was told that it was taken down for examination. I may have had a hand in wrecking the server that time too, as I had been testing loot seeding at VMB by hauling dozens of bags of gear to the area to see how loot cycling was working. It is not a 'high pop' server ATM, but there is a fairly consistent recurring crowd. Last night, I found two camps and three trucks, including a truck tent, and mil tent, as well as three M4s and enough magazines to fill a barrel. Now all I need is more people to come raid my extensive network of barrel stashes, and move my trucks when I'm not looking.
-
Play carefully, don't take huge risks. I'm often the last one alive when I run with a group; mostly because I stay put in a bush and don't take a shot unless I can get it right. Some people might not like such careful playstyle, but I prefer that to running after the first thing that moves and getting shot in the back by one of the five other people who saw it too. Being a good squad mate does not mean recklessly running through a field to try to save the gear from the first two idiots to get themselves killed.

TwitchCon - DayZ (Tisy Mil Base, Little Bird, Beards)
emuthreat replied to Yuval's topic in General Discussion
Try to look on the bright side. This will make the game more difficult for you, which is a good thing. I assume that you choose to play DayZ because it is a harsh, unrelenting, environment designed to continually challenge you in new and interesting ways. If you ask really nice, I might tell you my super-secret technique for barrel-vaulting; it puts barrels in places you otherwise would not be able to set them. But you must first agree to stop whining about improvements to the game that many of us have been anticipating for months. I never though you would be one of the people who don't "understand" what DayZ is about. -
Admittedly, I've been lucky to find a couple of hunting backpacks, but I've left behind dozens of SPOSN and mountain backpacks. The only things that I really noticed being hard to find are SVD rifles; I've been hoarding mags since .58 hotfix, and still haven't seen the rifle. Only seen one AK101, and sadly learned of the fast decay time of guns left on the ground when I went to go find a barrel for it; found my first FNX at a helicrash yesterday. Honestly, the only thing you can't be guranteed to find after around four hours of honest looking is the SVD. Look everywhere. I have found M65 jackets just laying around in the street; have a network of barrels up and down the western corridor, stuffed with AKs of all types ready to go; am on the verge of placing a barrel with battery and plug next to every truck spawn; and when I die, it only takes me three hours of playing to get back to my desired kit, Green cowboy hat, gas mask, tan M65, beige cargos, brown gloves, brown military boots, combat knife, full plate carrier, and either tortilla or hunting backpack(improvised backpack for running around looking for trouble). If you aren't finding loot, you either aren't traveling far enough, or you aren't checking every building.

Sounds like culling issues still at large. I get poor performance all around, but have noticed that my frames are best when I'm out away from any structures. Once a town comes into my network bubble, I get a major drop in frames Try running along the debug plains, just barely in sight of the treeline; this will give you your true max FPS. Bring a friend, make a day of it, tweak your settings in a controlled environment.
-
Check the sheds north of town, I can usually grab a couple barrels out of those. Also, I've been finding antibiotic vials in sheds more often than anyplace else. Good luck finding a syringe and a steady hand. On a sidenote: Ha-Ha, that's why I never drink questionable water.

All you Hardcore players packed it up and left?
emuthreat replied to infiltrator's topic in General Discussion
Still waiting for that camera vertical pan fix. I'll log some hours on underground every once in a while, but I really don't like how restricted it feels now that they have borked the camera and left it that way. -
I hear it is being worked on internally. No excuse for not doing anything about it. It's like a problem intersection being on the list for installation updated traffic signals and enforcement cameras, so the traffic patrols just generally ignore it; as we are seeing happen from BI and GSPs currently.

The way I read it, it seems that to reload a magazine, you will have to have it in hands (hotbarred), and drag the ammo to it in UI or hit hotbar for loose ammo to reload magazine. You might have gotten bummed about nothing. The description of hotbarred ammo being chambered at the tap of a key sounds similar to the magazine reloading scenario I just described. As long as magazine must be held in hands to reload, I don't care where the ammo comes from; be it vicinity, your pants, the half-empty magazine of the dead man lying in front of you; as long as the magazine must be equipped to hands.

White armband, what do they mean to you?
emuthreat replied to MadMcardle's topic in General Discussion
Extra rag; first time player learned to right click; Extra rag; somebody who thinks it means white flag(friendly/surrender); Extra rag; somebody pretending to be first time player who learned to right click;Extra rag; somebody pretending to think it means white flag; Extra rag; your grandmother laerned to play DayZ and she thought it might be a good place to put her knitting needles; Extra rag; somebody role-playing a person trying to hide a terrible tribal armband tattoo; Extra rag; "I gave blood today"; Extra rag; I plan on giving blood today. -
Are oil barrels no longer persistent on stable ?
emuthreat replied to Vindhler's topic in General Discussion
I highly doubt you can visit ALL of them. That being said, I still feel pretty safe, as I have invented a proprietary technique for levitating a barrel in the middle of a single shrub.
