    In a nutshell

Persistence is in; and CLE appears to be functional, but needs balancing. Aside from barrel stashes, and dynamic events now working properly, it is mostly more of the same. Still loads of fun, but far from done.

The problem of DayZ SA - thread #999

You added in the "no need to fix it" part. I've been playing the game. Stuff works, some of it sucks, but you can still play and have a good time. The infected are coming back on this next update. They will make the game more playable, as well as more broken. Its a paradox, but the game is playable--while they are fixing it.

    Confused

Yeah, I'm just expecting it to take a couple months in between the renderer going to experimental branch, and the occlusion fixes being added. There's almost no chance that we'll see anything close to the final iteration of the renderer as the first release. I also am waiting until they can tune up the new UI before using it, hoping they aren't gonna leave it as is when it's made to be the only option.
  5. emuthreat

    Confused

I was under the impression that the initial result would not be very impressive because they want to first get it into the game to verify that the new renderer and overall game is still working for thousands of people, then start making the changes that will yield improvements. I think this is what they mean by achieving parity before releasing it; at least in terms of visual presentation parity. Once it looks as good or better than the existing tech, and runs smoothly, they can begin the work of improving performance.

    [Poll] Official servers 1pp only

I get that there is a long ways to go with making gaming experiences more immersive. For instance, stereoscopic displays would allow the rendering of an avatar's noses, without it feeling scabbed onto the experience. I cannot see my chest without tilting my head down, though that is beside the point. I was only arguing that 3pp is exploitable, and less immersive than 1pp, and that for those reasons, I think 1pp would be a better baseline, or "default" setting. People come on here talking like the perspectives are intrinsically equal, when they are verifiably not. This thread is about whether 1pp should be the default for official, public servers; I said yes, and explained my reasoning. I'm along the lines of how more people might prefer a delivered pepperoni pizza, over homemade stir-fry chicken with fresh vegetables; but that doesn't change the fact that one of those dishes is intrinsically more nutritious, and has more natural and complex flavors. I'm not telling people they can't have pizza, I'm just saying that pizza isn't very nutritious, and probably should not be the cornerstone of their dining habits. Some people eat tons of pizza, and they are happy to do so, with no apparent health issues; but if they try to tell me that is is good for them, I'm gonna call bullshit.

    Confused

Aawww, come on. Don't go getting his hopes all up for the new renderer. I remember reading that the new renderer would bring only very modest improvements at first. Agreed though, that occlusion culling will make a huge difference for everyone once they finally stitch it into the game. @OP: Highly recommend using a hardware monitor, and making sure everything is nice and clean. A good dusting out of my CPU cooler and replacing a bad PSU got me from 10-15 frames average, up to 30-50 average. I get 60 while looking at my feet, sometimes low 20's in cities, and somewhere around 40 while running through the woods. Tweaking config files will only get you so far, especially if your hardware is throttling due to heat issues.

The problem of DayZ SA - thread #999

I don't know why, but I have only died twice from getting displaced and dropped, and only once by random should-not-have-gone-up-into-ATC bug; and haven't had a problem like that since before .58. I'm not denying that it happens, but I do wonder what the reason for that is.

    [Poll] Official servers 1pp only

I wasn't talking about Minecraft or chess, I was focusing specifically shooters, with a particular interest in DayZ. Would you mind explaining to me what the word immersion means, and how exactly a camera perspective that places the camera outside the player's body could be construed as immersion? While you are at it, please familiarize yourself with the concept of a straw man argument, and then compare that your having asked how 3pp makes chess and Minecraft exploitable. They are completely different genres,. As I understand it, immersion means to become completely enveloped by an experience, though some may regard it to mean a heightened level of interest or attention. So the perspective in which the camera is literally immersed in the noggin of your avatar, can be regarded as irrefutably more immersive than the perspective where the camera is outside of the avatar. This is the reasoning by which I have made a claim of fact, in labeling 1pp as being more immersive than 3pp. Did you miss the part where I said 3pp was still fun, and that I play that too? I'm just tired of people thinking that their personal preference somehow changes the reality of the situation. I like 3pp too, because it is easier, and I feel safer having that much more information about my surroundings. I feel that I was pretty clear in explaining that, by definition, 3pp is not as immersive as 1pp; and that by being exploitable, 3pp should not be the default setting, but rather an option for those who prefer a more casual experience.. If you are capable of forming a coherent response, with supporting evidence, I would be interested in seeing how either of my points can be logically refuted without resorting to straw-man and false equivocations. That drone comment was good for a laugh. I guess modern farmers are all dirty exploiters too, for using lasers to level their fields and eliminate cold spots... Edit: just read that poetry bit. Tell me now, Winston, what does two plus two equal?

    [Poll] Official servers 1pp only

I think you might be misunderstanding what this game is supposed to be when it is finished. Because of this lengthy early access period, the dominant playstyles have gravitated towards a long form run-and-gun shooter. While it is based on an ARMA mod, and has had community input since before it even existed, it is being made by a development team who has every right to build and administer the game however they damn-well choose. Of course, their goal to make money off the game might be a compelling reason to not overtly alienate a large portion of their audience; but the game is theirs to make, as is the decision on what the vanilla experience should look and feel like. You seem to believe that you are being fair and just in defending people's right to play 3pp, because everyone is entitled to their own opinions and preferences. In reality, there is often the right way, and the wrong way to do things; and that means that a group might not always get what they want. How would you feel about a group of doctors trying to defend their freedom to decide individually if hand washing is always necessary; or a contractor's freedom to decide for himself how important it is that your floors are level, or fast food workers' rights to use however little or much ketchup or mustard, as they see fit? I'll try not to be too pompous in explaining this: 3pp has exploits that allow a person to see more than the location of their avatar's eyes would allow, and is not as immersive as 1pp. These are not my own personal, humble, opinions; they are irrefutable facts, and nothing anybody says or does will be able to change those two basic facts. I know it is a contentious subject, mired in personal preferences and opinions, but anyone who says that 3pp isn't exploitable is a liar. You took the position that the exploit is equally useful to everyone in the server, and is therefore fair. And I'm sure you could say that laying on a rooftop and scanning the city below is equally fair, because anyone can get onto a rooftop. But in that moment, a person on the rooftop is able to exploit an advantage that is not available to other players, and by seeing without the possibility of being seen, the fairness of an encounter has been precluded by the use of 3pp. 1pp is the generally accepted standard for competitive shooters, presumably for the lack of ESP afforded by 3pp corner peeking. If you want fair gameplay, 3pp is simply not an option. There is no getting around this fact; much in the same way that if I want my ribeye steak and mushrooms to be cooked in the juices of the steak, I have to use a frying pan instead of a George Foreman grill--which by design, discards all the juices during the cooking process. That being said, I enjoy 3pp, and play it most often; but I prefer 1pp, and in my opinion, it is the better of the two. I understand that some people get motion sickness from 1pp, and I fully realize the limitations of 1pp with relation to player stances, and the difficulty in seeing around/over obstacles. Assuming that the finished product allows you some better options for being able to see out windows, I would prefer the vanilla DayZ experience to be 1pp. IMHO, 1pp should be the standard mode, not "hardcore," and 3pp should be "casual" mode; complete with an "I Agree" button, acknowledging that fair gameplay may be harmed by the use of 3pp camera perspective. I think it is pretty safe to assume that DayZ will turn out however Brian Hicks and the rest of the team thinks it should, and we would be wise to just trust that they'll do a good job.
  11. Very true! I have had problems in the past with binoculars, like in .53, I think. It used to just glitch out on the animation of raising the binoculars up to one's face. It looked like I was bashing my own face in with them. #somewhereonthespectrum
  12. To light a fire, you must have a fireplace kit placed in a suitable location, and it must contain kindling. You can drop a rag and a stick on the grey header area of the fireplace kit, where the name is printed, to provide kindling. You must be holding your matches or hand-drill in hands and looking at the fireplace to light it. To look down binoculars, you must have them equipped in hand, raised and ready to use by pressing space bar, and then just right click and release to look through them; holding right click will not work.

    Server removal

"Official" servers should be stable and available for use at any time that the hive is up and running. I'm assuming that the server data is being backed up so that it can be reloaded on different hardware promptly if a problem arises. The idea of an "official" contracted server getting wiped and leased out kinda negates the concept of having such servers.

The problem of DayZ SA - thread #999

Hey, after months of poor performance, I did some PC maintenance and upgraded to an SSD for system and applications, and my DayZ quality has tripled. One of the reasons that I never really bitched about the poor performance in the past, was that I could not be 100% sure that the performance issues weren't my fault. After recently having confirmed my past technical negligence as the cause of my crappy framerate, I have even less sympathy for the moaning masses. People seem to have a hard time grasping the concept of a major engine overhaul on a "moving vehicle" being nothing short of a miraculous task. People have made dozens of analogies to explain this concept in the past. Certain things just cannot get fixed or added into the game until the major elements supporting them are finished and integrated into the engine. Kinda like when downloading a fairly large program, it takes the longest time to get all of the installation software, and related bits onto the computer, but once they are there, everything else just falls into place in seconds. We are very near that precipice, and the information supporting that can be found on these forums; all one has to do is read (and understand) it.

    Official servers going dark.

That clears things up a bit, albeit through your assumption of what kinds of accounting "magic" the GSPs may use to balance their responsibilities with their revenues. I would define an Official server as one that is persistently available, for free, to anyone who plays DayZ; these should be the model of stability and availability that rented server admins strive to achieve.

    Official servers going dark.

I think I read you post about the stash server you mentioned coming back, and your elated surprise to find your work intact. My strategy is to try to pick one decent official public server, and then get a monopoly on the resources, then come on the forums and taunt people into coming to my server to try and rob/kill me. Even though it was a fairly consistently low population server, I found and raided a couple of camps, and recognize nearly a dozen regular names. I am the kind of guy who will rob a camp, then spend the rest of the day looking for a pen, so I can go back and leave a thank-you note. It doesn't work when the servers suddenly disappear... Edit: still gone for now, hopefully it will show back up intact in a little while like yours did. At least I know my stuff is safe. :D

    Official servers going dark.

I am now very thoroughly confused. Yes, I googled the server when I could not find it on my list. It was listed on Gametracker as being offline, with an uptime record of around 98%. I have no idea what the rest of your post is about. I was just asking if other people noticed their preferred official server was not available. You can check the start of this thread for context.

The problem of DayZ SA - thread #999

It might be your level of understanding and perspective that leads to those disastrous results. The game is perfectly playable as-is, and it's a great time to learn the ropes because the Zeds are on vacation. They took a Mod of ARMA 2, and decided to adopt it, and make it into it's own game in a new engine created while the game still lives, with new parts swapped into it while everyone can still play. It is our job to comfort this Frankenstein's Monster, and help to make it into something that can be loved rather than being shunned and stoned. Have some patience. And perhaps use some of that patience to read all of the status updates from 2015; they will help give scope to the nature of the project. Once certain key elements are in, prepared content can be included, while other longstanding issues are finally capable of being addressed.

    What changed with DayZ?

Grouped public hives; maybe groups ranging from five to twenty different servers would appropriately empower legitimate players to police hoppers on their public turf?

    Official servers going dark.

It was offline a couple hours before the rest of them went offline for maintenance. I was gonna go solo PVP and spend some saved assets, but instead went onto a private 1pp and made some progress there. I guess I'll know more in the morning, but it looks like I wasted a lot of time playing the game my preferred way, instead of pretending persistence isn't a thing.
  21. Clean out your gat-danged computer; all of it! I must admit to a certain degree of noob here, despite having competently built my own computer with NO prior experience in fall of 2011; specs as follows: GigabyteGA-990 FXA-UD3 motherboard, Antec 900 case, 16 GB (4x4GB) Corsair Vengance RAM, AMD Phenom ii X6 1100T CPU, GTX 560 GPU, Corsair TX650 PSU, Hitachi GST Deskstar 7K1000.D HDS721010DLE630 HDD. I originally built this PC for school; specifically to run Autodesk Revit Architechure for school. DayZ was the first game i ever played on PC since the early 2000s. At first I wrote off the performance issues to alpha, but after a while I figured some upgrades were in order. I bought a Mushkin Enhanced 256GB SSD and a EVGA GTX 960, and tried to upgrade to Windows 10; I gave up after multiple failures and installed a fresh copy of win7. It worked fine for about a month, until the unregistered copy of windows that an acquaintance "helped" me out with started to get cranky. Bough a brand new copy of Win7 64, and installed it on my second, Mushkin 240GB SSD. That worked for a day before I started getting boot issues. I decided to test my hardware; the memory in particular. I had to replace the charger jack on an old laptop in order to make a bootable disk of Memtest86, which would run for about 7 minutes before my PC would abruptly power down. At this point I took apart my computer down to the MOBO inside the case, and found my CPU cooler radiator was completely plugged up just behind the fan; the thermal paste was all dried up and the cooler came off with frighteningly little resistance. After about an hour of very thorough (and careful) cleaning of the cooler, ram, and MOBO, I moved on to the PSU. It was fairly dusty and I took off the fan grille and proceeded to carefully blow it out while using a toothbrush to clean the fan blades, and kept a vacuum on to pull away the dust (did this to all case fans, as well). When I put it all back together, it was deader than before, like completely dead. I did the G/B wire paperclip jumper test, which it failed, and promptly went and got a new PSU (some shitty Thermaltake 600W jobber with a bunch of ugly spaghetti coming out of it). Now my PC runs like new, with all the same stuff loaded onto it that seemingly caused the most recent BSODs and boot issues. Problem solved. The icing on the cake is that I saw an immediate boost in performance from the low teens to the mid 40s, though I haven't been into any cities yet. TLDR: Clean out your computer case, PSU, CPU cooler, and verify that the thermal paste is in good condition (this means reapply at no more than 2 year intervals) Heat is the enemy, and it can be difficult to pin down your problems if you have faulty thermal paste of a dying PSU. I would highly recommend using Open Hardware Monitor to check the system voltages and temperatures. I learned enough from this foray into PC diagnostics that I am now confident enough to go water cooled and maybe try to OC some stuff. And I will now make a habit of it to reapply thermal paste on a yearly basis. I hope this helps some of the more novice users to get the frames that their system can deliver, under optimal conditions. (THAT MEANS OPTIMIZE YOUR OWN SHIT, BEFORE YOU COME ON THE FORUMS AND COMPLAIN ABOUT POOR PERFORMANCE.)

FPS problem solved (in my case, at least)

After thoroughly cleaning all of my components and replacing the PSU, I can get at least 30 frames on high settings; 60 if there's not a lot to render in the area. At first, I too, blamed it on alpha, and just told myself that getting used to playing at around 10 frames would make me a ninja when optimization kicked in. Seriously though, monitoring the temps, and making sure that everything is breathing properly (liquid cooler in the mail as I speak) has tripled my performance. Admittedly, I pretty much only play DayZ, so I can't compare other games' performance. I would strongly recommend checking your thermal paste, and thoroughly cleaning your CPU heat-sink, if applicable. It made a HUMONGOUS difference in my performance.

    RPG Comeing To DayZ

I am certain that it will receive plenty of attention during the balancing phases. First one to shoot down a helicopter with an RPG gets all of the beans; all of them.

    Official servers going dark.

Necro-ing my own thread to see if anybody else has just lost their favorite official server. I had about two dozen barrels all over the map, and control of 4 trucks last time I checked--I had 8 before I took a couple weeks off. It seems that my play style of establishing a sprawling supply network always seems to backfire right before an update. Had enough stashes to support a few days of high-risk play with fast turn-around, but now I can't get onto my server. TLDR: Anyone else have an official server go dark? My stash server disappeared the day I was gonna go get rekt a bunch before experimental push.

[Proper Names 101] Quonset Hut vs Officer Tent

Yeah, mostly just making an argument for agreeing on a standard term, to avoid confusion. And yeah, I might not be a big fan of the term officer's tents, with all the syllables and other types of tents to confuse terms. Mookie made a good point, in that I feel Nissen and Quonset are interchangeable. Didn't mean to come off pompous, I was going for a more egalitarian ideal, with an agreed upon term and wasted my own time in arguing for the importance of conventions.. I never outright called any one name for it correct, I'm just tired of all the different terminologies used, it's confusing.
