It's worse just after dusk and just before dawn, because you can see the night time "dome" lowering and raising in the sky. It's ... unfortunate.

No, but it looks so 1980's. Say, where's that Tseng Labs CGA ISA card I had lying around here ...

    Exp Update 0.62.139869

It's one of my pet peeves. I complained about it a couple years back, but few others seem to be concerned. I was hopeful that it would get addressed, when True Sky was introduced, but no such luck. I expect that we'll just have to live with it, unless more folks start making a fuss.

    Exp Update 0.62.139835

I mostly agree and I think that on balance, the sounds are a significant improvement over what we had, but I also think that: a) The transitions between the different geographic areas are too abrupt, b) The volume levels of the various noises could use some balancing, c) The "loop" is too short and it sounds too repetitive, d) In a perfect world, "outdoor" sounds should be muted when indoors, e) Additional sounds, as randomized as possible, would help to offset the sensation that we are listening to s 30 second loop. We've also had issues with vehicle sounds since we've had vehicles. Perhaps some of the refinement that we desire has to wait until some new technology is introduced in 0.63?

    Exp Update 0.62.139748

A batch file is nothing more than a text file with a .bat suffix. A batch file can contain any legal commands that you can enter into the command interpreter. So, the first thing to do is to open an instance of the command interpreter (AKA a DOS prompt) and figure out how to execute your environment variable preferences for sound and etc. Once you figure that out, you'll need to open Steam and figure out the command to launch the game. Once you know all of the appropriate commands, you can string them together in a batch file. Any decent DOS book will give you primer on batch files (am I dating myself?), but there must also be an archive somewhere on the Internet, eh? EDIT: There are all sorts of vids on the YouTube about batch files. This will get you started.

I thought that was the entire purpose of Reddit. Strangely, though, even Reddit isn't as toxic as usual, ever since 0.62 hit. It's literally been days since I've seen a, "Dean took the money and ran ..." post over there. They're REALLY slacking off! What is the gaming world coming to???

    Exp Update 0.62.139748

The devs have been consistent in representing 0.62 as strictly an A/V update. In that respect, the current build is a dramatic improvement. The bulk of the team are currently working on 0.63, which will be the first beta build. It is not until 0.63, that we will finally see the inclusion of the new character controller and many other new mechanics and technologies which are interdependent upon the new controller. In other words, 0.62 still relies on a lot of the legacy software, which we have rightly criticized over the past few years and which will finally be abandoned at the conclusion of the 0.62 series of builds. So, until we see 0.63 hit the servers and we finally get our hands on the new tech, I would say that it is impossible to judge what progress the dev team have made behind the scenes. Most games start with a game engine, which is complete and ready to rock. DayZ started with an engine which was incapable of providing the features which were required. Therefore, an entirely new engine has been developed in parallel. You could say that the dev team have been working on two entirely different games at once; a legacy game, which has served as a proving ground for the introduction and testing of new concepts and the "actual" game, which we will not see until 0.63. Estimating how long it will take to complete the legacy game completely misses the point, because the legacy game will NEVER be completed. It is 0.63 and its progeny which will evolve into the completed game.

    Exp Update 0.62.139507

Yes, I initially began on the Australian server, but I switched to others early on. It got dark, just after I spawned as a freshie and I was having trouble finding food & water and figuring out where I was. Hey, there's no more glow in the dark wallpaper inside the houses, so it gets pretty dark at night! So I hopped onto several different US, UK and IR servers, where I had some daylight and dramatically better pings. Frankly, I was surprised at just how consistent the fps was. As I recollect, I was initially seeing an average of 17fps while on the Australian server, but after restarting the game and rebooting the PC, I had a stable 22fps no matter what server I was on, with surprisingly little variation. This was true whether my ping was 50, or 250. Now, some servers gave me a smooth 22fps (if there is such a thing) and some servers gave me a slide show at 22fps and some just couldn't make their mind up and repeatedly transitioned back and forth. I would say that the slide show scenario was more likely with higher pings, but I also suffered from it on my local servers as well, so I suspect that server load had at least as much, if not more more of an influence, than server ping alone. Between playing and then later, my diagnostic efforts, I was easily on eight to ten different servers over the course of the night. Sorry I missed you guys last night. The more I tried to rush, it seemed like the slower I went.

Yes, lots of texture pop and sometimes it doesn't pop, even when you're standing right next to the object.

    Exp Update 0.62.139507

Well, if it happens again, I know where to start looking. It it makes a habit of this, I'll certainly write protect it. I had never experienced this before, but now that you mention it, wasn't this a thing back around 0.45? It seems to me that I remember talk of having to write protect the config file back then.

    Exp Update 0.62.139507

Affirmative, I had to reset my video settings on Thursday night, before playing 0.62. And, as I mentioned, I was getting great fps then. The mystery is how the .cfg file got changed between Thursday night and last night. I literally shut that machine down and I hadn't used it the past couple of days, until last night. Perhaps we should have a straw pole? Likely causes for a scrambled .cfg file: a) Sunspots b) Microsoft c) H1Z1 conspiracy d) Dark Energy e) ???

    Exp Update 0.62.139507

TL:DR – Last night was VERY disappointing. I had several disappointments last night. Let me mention a couple of good things first, so that this isn’t a total bitch session. a) My quick bar was working just fine. b) Uncharacteristically, I didn’t get eaten by a wolf. c) I died twice, each time due to my own carelessness and impatience, while trying to get somewhere. Happily, the game didn’t kill me a single time. That about covers it; now for the bad: a) I experienced a period where I couldn’t get the prompt to search for apples and had to relog. b) I experienced another period where I couldn’t get the prompt to open doors and had to relog. No doubt a repeat of issue a. c) Crashes: 1- Always when exiting the game, 2- Once when browsing available game servers, 3- Twice while playing. d) I was dumped into the lobby with the dreaded “No Message Received” message, perhaps four times. e) And now for the star of the show. Even though I was averaging +/-85fps in the countryside on Thursday evening, I could only muster +/-20fps last night. It was literally a slide show for most of the evening, which made hand to hand combat with the zeds very dangerous, indeed. I had to revert to stealth mode, in order to sneak around them, which dramatically slowed my progress. After having run out of ideas, I deleted the dayz.cfg file and that fixed my problem. It’s been six months, or more since I last edited that file, so how it got corrupted, is anyone’s guess.

    Exp Update 0.62.139507

Obviously, you need to be able to achieve a minimum playable frame rate, but I think it is a mistake for the devs to target today's least common denominator hardware. Games like Crysis and Metro Last Light, for example, were notorious resource hogs when they were released, but they were still playable and looked great once some of the video settings were throttled back. All these years later and with today's hardware, these games still look fantastic and they and they still give me a lot of enjoyment. For a game like DayZ, thick forests are essential, or camps and equipment stashes simply are not viable. While we don't yet know if Enfusion is capable of this level of performance until we get to the far side of the beta process (AKA optimization), here is an example of what the devs should be shooting for. In order to discover a camp in a KC:D forest, you would have to be incredibly lucky, or attempt to track someone when they go to their camp. I don't even think that aircraft would be much of a help. While the devs have certainly narrowed the gap, their latest tech, while good, still doesn't seem to be in the same league as that of their peers. Fortunately, the engine is now modular, so updating the rendering subsystem from time to time could be a thing, allowing modders to "fill in the gaps" in the map.

    Exp Update 0.62.139507

This has always been one of my biggest pet peeves. It's like drawing a mustache on the Mona Lisa. There is nothing that you can do, when the source material suffers from this. You can, however, research posterization to better understand what is going on.

It just wouldn't be the same without oranges, bananas and kiwi! Say, where is that castle located? I'm still lost, but I think I may be just a wee bit South of there. Hell, never mind; I probably got wiped, anyway.

    Exp Update 0.62.139507

I was finally able to hop on for a peek. I can't remember the last time when I was lost for 2+ hours and I never did figure out where I spawned, where I traveled through, or where I ended up!!! It was almost like my very first time, except that I didn't get mauled and killed by every zed that I stumbled across. ; ) As beautiful as the new shrubbery is, I expected more texture popping and in this respect, I wasn't disappointed. Popping was significant and quite distracting. Of course I lost my config settings, so perhaps I can tune some of this out? I clicked on the "HIGH" default, turned off the motion blur and let it rip. My FPS was rarely below 85, so I'm pretty happy with that. But speaking of texture popping, some textures never did pop. Case in point, the road signs, with the town names - these never did pop and they stayed a blurry mess for me, which is part of the reason why I never did figure out where I was. Through it all, I only had two really annoying issues: a) I couldn't get the quick slots to work and b) I hit a patch of minor rubber-banding, but accompanying that was an inability to pick things up and I had great difficulty in manipulating my inventory. I had to relog in order to "fix" this problem. Overall i liked the new sounds, although I agree that they are a bit over the top. But, when was the last time the devs introduced a new mechanism, which did not require fine tuning, over time? Besides, that is what the beta process is for, eh?. IMHO, the most crucial aspect of this new patch is the movement of the foliage. I think it will be much more difficult to spot animals, zeds and other players, when there is so much movement for us to process. Rain is still a thing, but I was apparently not worthy of a thunder and lightning show. That's how I ended the night, grey, dreary, damp and foreboding ... in other words, the iconic DayZ adventure. EDIT: I just remembered that I found a house that I could not fit through the doorway. It's the small one with external stairs on one side and internal stairs on the other side and sometimes, you fall through the floor and can't get out from under it! Anyway, I couldn't fit through the ground level door, even though their were no obvious obstructions.

    Exp Update 0.62.139507

You're wasting your breath emu. These people too immature to comprehend that there is an actual purpose for Experimental builds. They don't care that the devs go to the trouble of releasing Exp builds specifically for testing, rather than for general purpose playing. They are annoyed by the frequent character wipes. And, they don't want to know why those of us who are actually trying to discover, reproduce and report bugs are legitimately annoyed when these youngsters come by to "test" their bullets. That said, it has always been an every man for himself situation in a hot spot, even in an Exp build. So, by all means, if you must PLAY on Exp and you have some bullets that are burning a hole in your pocket, go to the airfield, the Balota camp, the Myshkino camp, or downtown Cherno, etc., but TRY for a moment to understand that the rest of us are not here for your amusement. We are actually trying to get something accomplished, not just for our benefit, but for your benefit and the benefit of everyone who wants to see this game evolve into that special thing that we all know it has the potential to be. Tatanko is right, we need to get the band back together so that we are in a position to project an arrogant show of force, when necessary. Now, someone was about to give me a compelling explanation of how taking up limited slots on an Exp server, just to KOS fresh spawns helps to further the forward progress of the development of the game. I'm listening.

    Exp Update 0.61.136067

The bulk of the changes, over the past several builds, have been under the hood, to the game engine, itself. For instance, we now have a new renderer and a new sound engine. There have also been significant changes to the loot economy, animations and sounds. Honestly, you should skim the Status Reports.
