    Battleye problem

OK, so I went back to my first machine (both have been working with the new Battleeye client until today) and that PC is now stuck in this update loop again, too! I just submitted a second help ticket on the first machine. With any luck, someone at BI will pick up the phone and ask Battleeye WTF! TL/DR: I have two f'ing machines, but no way to get my fix!!!

    Battleye problem

Battleeye jacked me around last week, with this endless update loop B.S., until I renamed one of the Battleeye folders. I just pissed away two hours on a second machine this morning and it won't cooperate at all. This machine was running fine, the day before yesterday! I just sent an e-mail to Battleeye a few minutes ago and I pasted a copy of that e-mail into a DayZ bug report. We'll see who points the finger at who.

    The Guide to Billboards

I never realized how many different ones there are, until I saw them all here, together. Thanks for going above and beyond by providing the translations. I had always planned to write down the text of these signs and dump it into Google Translate, but I figured that I would be shot in the back of the head, before I found a pen and piece of paper. Thanks a bunch!

    Water Landforms, Systems, and Health

All great ideas, but the devs have already commented several times on rivers. The engine, in it's current form, is not up to the task of rendering flowing water. A long wide pond, perhaps, but not a flowing river. There are at least two sources for drinking water as I recollect. I believe the labels were blue water (wells) and brown water (ponds). With this differentiation as well as the fact that purification tablets already in game, I would expect that it's just a matter of time, before brown water will have a chance of making you sick (the devs have stated that they are currently working on diseases and herbal remedies), so with any luck you'll be vomiting and suffering form diarrhea in no time at all. If that doesn't make you shit in your pants, then perhaps the new zombie hoards will.

High end PC with low FPS

This guy must be on to something, because the devs and the forum admns have referred to his guide on several occasions: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=216291078 I have found his advice to be pretty sound, with the exception of the launch parameters. Several of these have been depricated, since this article was written. Do not use the -nosplash, or the -nopause arguments, as they can interfere wth the new menus. The other arguments for CPU, GPU and RAM probably won't make any difference at all, unless the game has somehow misidentified your hardware. The -winxp argument can make a big FPS difference, but it causes stability issues (crashes) for many who attempt to use it. With your 780ti, you can safely crank up the terrain, texture detail and texture filtering. They must be set to high, or very high in order to offload these tasks to the GPU. There is no reason why the 780 can't manage the very high settings. For a baseline, set everything else to very low, or if possible, off. Even with an i7 I will edit the config files. I think I have the complexity at 500000 and the view distance at 3000. I have the shadow distance relatively high, because I like the water to look like water. On my AMD machine, I have these numbers adjusted significantly lower, but I still have the terrain and texture settings on very high. If you get reasonable performance, you can bump up the clouds, or antialiasing, or whatever your personal hot button calls for, until the game performance starts to suffer. I like clouds, shadows and AA as much as the next guy, but together, they will bog down even the most powerful i7 CPUs. There will still be lots of trial and error, but hopefully this will give you a good starting point. Edit: I just noticed this post from earlier today: http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/221894-increase-performance-by-tazzy/?p=2229958 There is a lot of good advice here and none of it conflicts with my observations.

High end PC with low FPS

Unfortunately, Nvidia's recommendations aren't all that. I've found that the best strategy is to max out all of the GPU related settings and minimize the CPU related settings. Even with an i7, it probably makes sense to make some modest adjustments to your draw and shadow distance, in your config file. Then, assuming that you have suitably powerful hardware, you can bump up some of the CPU settings bit, by bit until you find a good compromise. Keep in mind that all servers are not created equal and your fps is linked to server performance. Also, the current 0.54 (experimental) build does not have brilliant fps, perhaps due to all of the vehicles and animal AI that have just been implemented. Prior to 0.54 it was extremely unusual for my i7 / GTX780 to drop below 50fps, even in the big towns. In 0.54, it routinely drops into the twenties.

High end PC with low FPS

The short answer is yes, low GPU usage is pretty much par for the course (through the end of the year, probably). This game is CPU intensive and it doesn't require a lot of GPU horsepower. Secondly, I would expect a wee bit better out of your hardware combination. How have you configured the game and what resolution are you running?

Should I keep trying or just wait for the beta?

With all of the settings adjusted to low, or off, DayZ will not make much use of your GPU, instead it will rely on the CPU to do most of the grunt work. This configuration will give you poor FPS and horrible graphics. This is a problem for AMD processors, in particular, and they will not be able to keep up under that load. With a suitable GPU, you can adjust the quality of the textures, objects and terrain to high, or very high and this will offload some of the work onto the GPU, make the game look better and likely increase your FPS. Some of the guides do a better job than others, of explaining which settings are CPU intensive and which are GPU intensive. I would suggest that you study them to see where you need to be conservative and where you can be a little more aggressive. Most of them will also make suggestions on how to adjust the draw distance and shadow distance. These are pretty critical adjustments on an AMD box and it will take some time to come up with a compromise that you can live with. As freethink says, it may take hours of tinkering to come up with a combination that will work for you, because every PC is a little different. If your primary interest is PVP in Cherno, you may still be unhappy with your frame rate, no matter what you do. I tend to hang out in the interior of the map and I usually get between 25-45FPS on my AMD machine. The larger towns, like Severograd are challenging, but I don't spend a lot of time in big towns, so it's not that big of an issue for me. Your mileage may vary.

Should I keep trying or just wait for the beta?

This is an very interesting article, thanks. Some observations: "The bottleneck beyond four cores is almost always the graphics, not CPU." I would say that this is true, however DayZ is the exception. And, as the article points out, all cores are not created equal. "If you’re wondering about AMD’s chips, if anything it’s all simply worse. AMD’s cores are weaker than Intel’s and as things stand they’re tough to recommend for anything but a very, very low-budget gaming box." True again ... as an AMD and an Intel owner I can confirm this, without reservation. The old hot rod adage applies here, Speed costs money, how fast can you afford to go? "... a demo designed to show DX12’s new multi-threading prowess at its very best. And it shows zero benefit beyond four cores." Personally, I would be reluctant to make too many assumptions, as DX12 is still alpha code. However, if DX12 were only able to make use of four cores for my games, that would be dramatically better that where we are now. So, if my game would happily run on four cores I would still have a couple of cores left over for the one hundred, or so Windows processes that run, nearly constantly, in the background. Without a doubt, you are better off with an extra core, or two, if you stream while gaming or would like to game while a video renders in the background.

    Player disconnects/connects

I frequently have problems connecting. I will log onto a server and all I will have is a black screen. I'll wait a minute, or so to see if it will sort itself out. Then when it doesn't (it never seems to) I'll disconect and try again. When I initially connect to a server, for about a half a second I will see player names in the RHS top of the screen and server messages on the LHS lower corner of the screen and then the screen will go black. After a brief pause, the renderer starts drawing the world for me. What I have noticed is that if I do not see the names and the messages, the renderer will never draw the world for me. My screen stays black. I will wait a moment and then either retry the same server, or give another server a shot. Just a wild ass guess ... I'd say about 60% of the time I have to make at least two attempts before I get "all the way" onto a server.

    Frames per second = better?

I've noticed an improvement since .53 exp, but I see a lot of variation from server to serer.

    Any word about civilian buildings?

The school is definitely going to be cool. It would probably make a good base for a larger group. I hadn't seen the pics of the interior items before; they look great! Those summer cabins look good, too. I like that Cherno has the demolished hotel and Novo has the tall tower (I call it city hall, but I guess it's just an office building). It would be nice if the rest of the large towns had distinctive features like these. Novo was added only recently and it also has a very distinctive industrial area. I know that the devs are revisiting some areas of the map to make improvements. I just hope that they are not shy about making some bold changes, to ensure that each of the larger towns is just a little more distinctive.

    Updated DayZ to 0.54.126646 and...

I have only seen this once, but I had a "Connection Lost" message, when it locked up on the server selection menu. I haven't been able to reproduce the problem, but I submitted it to the bug tracke anyway.

It would also be nice to have a little variety in the furnature loadout for current buildings.

    What ever happened to......

The Alaskan has been confirmed and is in development. More rifles with lower powered scopes is supposed to be a thing, but I haven't seen an ETA. Chainsaws made a brief appearance in experimental, but proved to be buggy. It is unclear if they will come back. Yes, they tended to attract a lot of attention and they didn't run very long on a tank of fuel.

    Considering Purchasing the Game

DO NOT buy this game. It will turn you into the gaming equivalent of a crack whore. You have been warned! If you are seriously considering a purchase, you need to be aware of a few things. Most importantly, we are still in alpha, so nothing has been optimized. Therefore, you will need a CPU with VERY strong single core performance to run the game. I would recommend an i5 4690k, or better. AMD CPUs are not up to the task and will only frustrate the hell out of you. The GPU is pretty irrelevant at this point. Anything in the GTX5XX family and up, will be more than adequate. The game, itself, is an absolute hoot to play! It is frustrating, infuriating and sublime all at the same time. Most of the basic functionality is in place, but there are a lot of place holders and a few rough edges. The player base is very passionate about this game. You will soon find that those who complain the loudest will likely have in excess of 500 hours in game. Many have spent an astounding 1000-2000 or more hours in this game. Open discourse about hoarding.

There is a big difference between hoarding and manipulating bugs in the game. I read an account not too long ago that a player submitted a bug report because his character had become unresponsive, or doing something crazy; I can't recall all of the details at the moment. When the devs checked into the issue, they found that he had lots of duped gear ... vests inside of vests, inside of vests, etc. I think they counted 5,000 items in his inventory. My recollection is that the devs have, or plan to implement sanity checks so that this kind of thing can't happen again, because not only is it cheating, but it puts an immense load on the servers and it causes performance issues for all of us.
  23. Yes, and they should have a build for Linux and BSD and Amiga and the TRS80 and ... Seriously, I'm a Linux fan and with Steam now running natively on Linux nothing would make me happier than to see DayZ ported over. However, let's take it one step at a time, If they can't get DayZ to run worth a damn on Windows, it will surely run like ass on any other platform.

    Frequency out of range

I don't think anyone is ignoring the OP, this is just a very unusual probem. As I recall, there are only three files in the ~/My Documents/dayz folder (I'm on my Linux box right now, so sorry I can't give more specifics). All of the config files can be viewed with a text editor, but it may be difficult to spot an error, at first glance. Therefore, I agree with pirgrim. Start by renaming the dayz folder. Rename it to dayx, or dayz_original for example, so that you can easily return to a known starting point, if that becomes necessary. Start the game and it will automatically generate new, default config files. Go into the game menus and adjust your monitor resolution and other preferances. Let us know if the problem persists. Also, don't forget to have Steam verify the local game files.
