    Ability to turn off chat

3 - different things: Server messages Character status messages Chat Of the three, I find server messages to be the most annoying. All I want to know is when the server will restart and there are better ways to represent this information than the current implementation. Any additional messages should be banned on public servers. Character status is important, however I think that there are better ways to display this information, preferably on the inventory page, or a similar page. Chat is an important function, but its use is dubious at best. It's a sure way to get yourself killed. Fortunately, I haven't run into anyone who abused the chat system by spamming messages. Incidentially, this would seem to be more than adequate justification for an execution! Perhaps we could have a simple key combination to toggle chat on and off? That would seem to be a more than reasonable compromise.

    Dev Response About -exThreads

Yes, this is very interesting, thanks. My personal experience, with three differet PCs, is that the launch parameters either do nothing, or they hurt performance. Some of them cause more serious problems, including crashes. Because of this, I don't currently run any launch parameters on any of my machines. Certainly some of these parameters may be useful if you have obscure hardware that is mis-identified by the game engine, but I suspect that this is not a very common scenario. One potentially useful launch parameter is the -winxp switch, but it seems to cause crashes on more PCs than it helps. It's still worthwhile to test for compatibility, though, as the potential FPS increase can be substantial. In my opinion, your time is better spent massaging the config file, in the Documents folder.

    This may seem stupid

It doesn't sound like you're going to get much testing done, if you are getting booted from the server every five minutes. Perhaps there is an issue with your router/Internet connection, or perhaps you need to try different servers.

    First Game

The fire ax is arguably the best melee weapon, but the ax, sledge hammer and pick ax are all extremely good. If you are a fresh spawn with no melee weapon, anything in the hand will help, even a can of beans. No matter what you have, the key is to aim for the head ... and keep moving, to make yourself a more difficult target.

.55 is insane! New AI and haunted Chernarus

+1 for screaming like a little girl. I'm sure that they only wanted to play with you.
  6. I am a confirmed keyboard and mouse guy when it comes to FPS. If you don't like the K&M, I couldn't give two shits! However, when it comes to driving, I find that my wireless XBOX360 controller is a much better tool for the task at hand. If this makes you an unhappy troll, that's your problem. Before I go to the trouble and expense of getting my controller to work with DayZ, can someone tell me if the V3S is still going to steer like a slug, or am I going to curse myself for not enabling my controller sooner? Cheers!

    Bandit hunting.

Proper bandits do not KOS. They are much more skilled than that. Too bad we don't see more of them.

    First Game

It sounds like you have the right attitude and you're having the time of your life.Too many people become obsessive about their gear and it makes them miserable. You have many exciting adventures ahead of you! You will be happy to know that the new zombie AI is currently being tested on the experimental servers. You can use stealth techniques against them, but if they see you, they are much more agressive. :D

What can I UPGRADE in my PC to make DayZ run better?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but DayZ just doesn't run as well on AMD processors. Even Intel i7 CPUs struggle with this game. Therefore, there's not a damn thing that you can do, unless you are prepared to drop more cash on an Intel CPU and motherboard. Your best bet is to refer to some of the performance guides and try editing the scene complexity, draw distance and shadow distance in your config file.

    CR527 Carbine Talk

I've never seen a mag for the carbine, so I've never even picked one up. There is no point in wasting time with it, since the SKS and repeater are so plentiful and there is no need to go on a snipe hunt (for a magazine), in order to use them.

Have you ever run into the only other guy on the server?

I've had this happen on several occasions. Ist person experimental servers don't seem to be very popular, late at night.

    Battleye problem

I stumbled on this old link and I thought I'd update it. Perhaps it will save someone else some aggrivation. I did some experimention and determined that the Battleye update loop is caused by certain, specific servers. This is a chronic problem, probably due to a server misconfiguration. Other servers do not exhibit the problem. I reported these findings to the bug tracker. Their response was that I should report the issue to Battleye support, as they will need to address the problem. I sent the info to Battleye support and they advised me that I caused this problem for myself, by trying to switch back and forth between experimental and stable servers. Further, that if I was on experimental, I should stay there, because it is impossible for me to change to the stable branch. I advised them that I play experimental exclusively and that only certain, specific experimental servers exhibit the problem, while others do not. I only switched to the stable branch AFTER my favorite low ping experimental servers were both affected. Additionally, I was, in fact, able to switch to the stable branch and back to experimental with no problems, whatsoever. I have received no response to my second e-mail and I fear that Battleye is in denial. If you experience the Battleye update loop, please send an e-mail to BE support, documenting the issue and the server name. Cheers!

    FPS increase by?

I am actually encouraged. The game engine makes little, or no use of the processing power of the GPU and merely uses it to display pretty pictures. The CPU is doing all of the heavy lifting and has become a botteneck. The GPU, by and large, is simply along from the ride. Making use of the GPU not only for video functions, but for general computational functions (think Bitcoin mining) is a common and well understood use case within the industry. The fact that the devs have begun the process to modularize the engine, so that individual modules, such as the renderer, can be independently updated and replaced as necessary, encourages me that they are persuing an actual solution, rather than grasping for Band-Aids. No one in their right mind would embark on such a project, unless they were very serious about fixing things. Making effective use of the hardware on hand (GPUs), implementing more effective culling, and reducing the load on the CPU are going to make a significant improvement in FPS. And, in it's newly modular state, the engine becomes a tool that is easily updated for BI's future needs. If the devs did not believe that they were bringing the engine up to 2015 standards of functionality, they would never have made the commitment to port DayZ to console, where the CPUs have a fraction of the power of the average desktop. Remember, the full resources of BI are behind this engine update, because they wish to use it for future projects (ARMA4?). If they don't get this right, BI is going to become irrelevant. There is a lot riding on this engine. Now, just give me a moment to dive back into my foxhole, before you reach for your slings and arrows.

Couple things--Quick Sand and the Dirt Road of Death

Hello, I live just outside of Stary Yar and I can confirm that it has become extremely dangerous up here. I would like to sell my house and move to a new location, where life is not such a hardship, but the bottom has dropped out of the real estate market. There has been some strange geological activity and entire vehicles are known to have been swallowed whole. We are just simple country folks, and we can ill afford a loss of even one of our few, prescious vehicles. We live in constant fear that our neighbors, or family members may likewise disappear. There is also the issue with the bodies that were recently uncovered and the violent strangers who were found at the scene. It took five grown men to restrain one of them and the other had to be shot by local law enforcement. The authorities still have not been able to establish a motive for the crime and our local doctor is baffled by the behavior of the criminal that was captured. We are concerned that he may be a member of some deranged cult, who are experimenting with hallucinogenic drugs. We no longer sleep well in our beds, worrying that there are more like him, prowing our streets at night. Several members of the community have taken to barricading themselves inside of their homes and shooting indiscriminately at the strange noises that come from the woods at night. Please comrads, if you value your lives, do not come to Stary Yar ... especially at night.

    Don't spawn magazines with ammo

I don't care if the magazines are empty, or not, so long as we can find one, once in a while. Tonight I got attacked by a zed and he ruined my vest and magnum. For some reason, I couldn't find another magnum, but I did find a dozen Makarovs, four 1911s, a CZ75 and a P1. At one point I was carrying a Makarov, 1911 and a CZ75 for a couple of hours, just waiting to see which magazine I would stumble across. Finally I got adgitated and went to the NWAF, where I found five Makarov magazines and a pile of loose .380. Somewhere in the woods, near NWAF there is now a 1911 with a silencer, a CZ75 and several boxes each of .357, 9mm and .45ACP.

    Best place to store ammo...?

The pants, jacket and vest are all likely to be damaged for various reasons. The backpack may not be the most convenient, but it is the least likely to be ruined (along with its contents).

"No message received for xx seconds"...?

Be careful not to rush right back onto the server. I waited almost ten minutes, before hopping back on last night. I waited, because a zombie had just run up to me. I sidestepped and literally took one swing with my ax, when I got the "No message received ..." message. When I logged back on, my jacket, vest, magnum, 30 rounds of .357, .357 speedloader, four boxes of 9mm and some other odds and ends were all ruined and my arm was broken! The zed was still there after ten minutes, beating the snot out of me.

    genuinely annoyed - outhouse problems

I've been tempted to do this, but whenever I log out inside of a house, I log back in under the damn thing. I'd hate to log back in under the loo! THAT would be REALLY inconvenient ... not to mention smelly!

    Using Online Map Cheating?

Only beginners use the map to find loot. Anyone who has been playing for more than ten hours knows which buildings spawn decent loot and which are duds. They also know that the loot tables change over time and they will visit the duds from time to time, to see if there have been any changes. It takes a bit longer, but it doesn't take too long to develop a mental image of the map. I know that if I spawn in Svetlo, all I need to do is follow the railroad tracks to Novo and then onto Severo and I can then keep going all the way to the end of the line, passing several other towns along the way. By the time I run out of track I'll have decent basic gear and a compass and if I use the compass to head East from the railroad station, I'll find the NWAF. Don't forget that there is an in-game map and it's not too difficult to assemble all of the pieces. The in-game map will teIl me all about the route of the railroad, as I have just mentioned, but it won't tell me about loot. That's OK, because as I have already mentioned, I already know which buildings to visit. The area where the on-line map does provide an edge is in orienteering. Yes, the in-game map shows towns, roads, geologic features and elevations, but by using the on-line map I can determine that if I head NNW I will come to a deer stand at which point, if I head due West I will come to a clearing. At that point I can head WSW to find a town that I want to visit. In other words, the on-line map gives sufficient detail about my surroundings that it allows me to precisely find any location, without using the roads. This cuts travel time and it is generally safer when I keep off of the major arterys. I can use the in-game map in exactly the same way, but it is not quite as detailed. Those who are not interested in the orienteering metagame can still find the same towns and locations and they arguably have a better time doing it, because they will likely have more interactions along the way. So, am I cheating the game by staying off of the roads, or am I cheating myself, by missing out on interactons? The answer is probably both. So I tend to use the on-line map most agressively as a new spawn, when I am most vulnerable and time and safety are the most critical. After I have basic gear, I tend to follow the roads more while I explore.
