Experimental Branch: 0.54 Discussion
BleedoutBill replied to SmashT's topic in PC Experimental Updates
Let me preface this by saying that I was probably lucky. I updated to 0.54 exp., took a tour through the new config menus and then tried to connect with a server. The first thing that I noticed was that even though I was on the exp. branch, the page was showing both stable and exp servers. I sorted the list by build number and tried to connect. No luck. I had a look at a promising candidate, got the IP address and port number and tried to manually connect. That didn't work, either. I went into the history tab and clicked on an old favorite. That prompted a BattleEye update. Once that update was complete, I merely clicked on "Play" and I connected to a server, straightaway. I got an inland spawn and I found loot everywhere, but only one minor lootsplosion so far, in one of those small concession shacks. I think I was energized and hydrated by the time I left the fourth house. After about eight houses I had a raincoat, fire ax, an ammo assortment and a whole backpack full of food. I was surprised to see that not only do we have the new compass model, but the old ones are still spawning, too. I compared one of each model and they both liked the same direction for North. It's too soon to tell if they are accurate, or not because I still don't know where the hell I am. It's night time and after about fifteen minutes, I had to hop off, for a server restart. Apart from the new compass, which is hard to read, incidentally, I haven't seen anything else that I didn't find in 0.53. -
I think the issue is the rarity of the bolts. Otherwise, there would be no need to craft them. The optical site for the crossbow is relatively easy to find. The crossbow, itself, is pretty rare. I have no complaints so far. I must not be as lucky as the rest of you, because I probably average one bolt for about every ten hours of game play. With such restricted availability of ammunition, the crossbow is rendered irrelevant. This is a shame, because I have a stealthy play style, so the crossbow holds a lot of appeal for me. Too bad that it's just not practical. Hopefully this will change when the new loot economy is implemented.

Perhaps this will be resolved in W10, but most other versions of Windows seem to be pretty clueless about USB3. Therefore, most USB3 ports will require that you manually install a manufacturer specific driver. Go to your motherboard mfg website, or system mfg website and find/download/install the driver.

Take 2 of the same ruined item and make badly dmg one
BleedoutBill replied to chickenmcfuggits's topic in Suggestions
Firearms would lend themselves to this mechanic. You could conceivably field strip two completely ruined (and non-functional) weapons to collect enough good parts to assemble a working sample. -
It seems to me that last week Eugen said that he was also going to patch the zed AI. It seems that an old bug got re-introduced. Upgrades and new builds are almost always worth the wait. Personally, I enjoy tinkering with the new experimental builds when they are released.

Well, they are breaking the engine apart to make it modular. They are rewriting the engine, renderer, server code, changing over to a new scripting language, introducing vehicles, rewriting zed and animal AI, etc., etc., etc. This should bring you up to speed: http://dayz.com/blog/status-report-17-feb-15

It depends on what needs to be done. Routine maintenance may take three, or four hours. If they have to perform upgrades, apply patches, or do other operations, it can take considerably longer. Eugen tweeted earlier that the hive needs to be upgraded, so today's operation will not be routine. The servers will be back up, when they are back up.

It's Wednesday. I don't believe that they've completed the weekly server maintenance.

You will die ... a lot. Especially in the beginning. There is a steep learning curve, so do not get discouraged. Once you get the hang of it, you will still die. But, if you do a postmortem each time, you will learn much more quickly. I found the vids on the Wobo YouTube site very helpful in explaining the game mechanics.

I would say that this varies from model to model. However, even if you have a firearm that doesn't tend to get all sooty inside, remember that out in the field, it will be exposed to mud, sand and water. This type of environment can easily compromise the reliability of automatics and semi-autos. This is one of the reasons why the military do extensive trials, before adopting any new firearm for service. The original AK47 was renown for its ability to continue to function, even after being exposed to the most harsh/dirty environments. Likewise, there was a huge controversy about the M16 when it was first adopted by the US military. These rifles required continuous maintenance to keep them operational, even though this issue was not discovered in the trials. If memory serves, the root cause was substandard ammunition. This begs the question ... is all of your ammunition pristine in the zombie apocalypse?

Solvent is nasty stuff. You may as well drink gasoline, as to drink this stuff. Think about it. Anything that can dissolve copper, or lead deposits is not something that you will want to drink! There are lots of vids on the subject of cleaning firearms. Here is one for the 1911. As you might expect, some firearms are easier to strip than others. To someone who has never actually done it, I wouldn't say that it is intuitively obvious. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=how+to+clean+a+1911

Agreed and you should be able to completely max out all of the video settings with the aforementioned GPUs. However, the increase in FPS will likely be negligible.

A repairable two-way radio may encourage folks to actually use the vehicles that they find, as opposed to hoarding and hiding them. Now that I think about it, it may be interesting to add electrical fuses to the game. A blown fuse could disable the headlights, or the windshield wipers, producing a greater likelihood of a crash at night, or in the rain, respectively. Also, a fuse would be required in order to get the radio to work.

Attempting to Optimize my PC for best play
BleedoutBill replied to Yoh272's topic in Troubleshooting
No, no monster GPU here. He says that he has an Intel HD4400 chipset. The 3D capabilities of this hardware are extremely limited. You can not compare clock frequencies across CPU families, much less among manufacturers, as processor architectures vary wildly. This is the equivalent of telling us that your car is too slow, even though the redline is 6,000RPM. There are too many other variables, about which we have no information. -
Add more food stuff: Noodles/Ramen

One word ... jerkey. -
Regarding an instant fix to broken legs, it would seem to me that, with this new development, "The animation side of this will be using Enfusion's new animation system and will allow us to have more animation layers on character, so it will be possible to play more animations at once. With this, we can achieve moving during shooting from the bow or adding injured animations." this should open the door to an intermediate limping stage, in between a broken leg and returning to full health. A similar scenario should be devised for a broken arm. Perhaps after the splint is applied to a broken arm, the character can only use one arm for a period of time. This would preclude the use of any long arm, or any two-handed melee weapon.

Dayz Fps & graphic settings quick question
BleedoutBill replied to a_irish_fella's topic in New Player Discussion
I would recommend the 9xx series. I just built a gaming machine with a GTX970, which replaced a machine with a GTX570. After an hour, or two, the 570 would make the room hot and stuffy. In contrast, the 970 doesn't put out nearly as much heat and the room is much more comfortable. Also, the 970 seems to be at least a powerful as my GTX780, but for a lot less money. What's not to like? -
Dayz Fps & graphic settings quick question
BleedoutBill replied to a_irish_fella's topic in New Player Discussion
I also have an antique Phenom II 6-core machine, but with a GTX470. Even with conservative video settings, I get shit for FPS, just like everyone else. I recently picked up a GTX780 and popped it into the Phenom II box for a burn-in. I was stunned to see that my FPS was pretty much unchanged. The only difference was that I could now ramp up all of the graphics settings and make the game look pretty. I ultimately put the GTX780 into an i7 machine. That monster i7 CPU kicks DayZ's ass and the GTX780 ensures that everything looks good. Contrary to popular opinion, the game does look good, if you have a suitable GPU. The problem is that a heavy duty GPU does absolutely nothing for the frame rate. -
Using really fast RAM with an APU, or a CPU with integrated graphics is definitely worth the extra money. Before I buy RAM that is significantly faster than 1866, or so, with a discreet CPU/GPU combo, I would first want to make sure that my CPU, GPU, SSD, RAM (at least 8GB) and other components were up to snuff, as there is a bigger bang for the buck in these areas. X99 / DDR4 is a different calculation all together.

Adding more zombies and increasing spawning frequency
BleedoutBill replied to timofei123r's topic in Suggestions
Cool your jets. Zeds are incoming, just as soon as the new AI is enabled and some other prerequisites are met. -
If you are not currently experiencing problems, then extra RAM will not provide any benefit. As someone already mentioned, additional RAM will allow you to run additional programs, simultaneously, without a degradation in performance. If you run too many programs at once (requiring more RAM than you have installed) Windows will use virtual memory for those additional applications. What is virtual memory you may ask? That is a area on your hard drive which is a sort of a parking space for when you run out of memory. That's good right? Well, it is good right up to the point that you want to alt-tab to the program on the parking space. Before Windows can use that "parked" program, it needs to park something else (to make room in RAM) and then read that "parked" program back into RAM. Since the hard drive is dramatically slower than RAM, you get lagging and unresponsiveness. If you are the kind of person who wants to have a browser open with a Chenarus map as well as a few dozen other tabs, recording software running, Twitter running, e-mail running, etc., etc., etc., all while trying to run DayZ, then you probably need more the 4GB of RAM. If you switch from one program to another and your PC becomes unresponsive while at the same time your hard drive begins grinding away, then you probably need more than 4GB of RAM. I have found that most laptops perform dramatically worse on 4GB than a PC. Why? Because the GPU in the laptop typically shares the RAM with the CPU. This means that instead of 4GB available to programs, you probably only have about 3.5GB. This may sound like a small difference, but the loss of that 0.5GB means that you are going to be parking programs to virtual memory much more frequently and any time you have to access the hard drive, performance suffers dramatically.

I may be imagining things, but weren't the MOM-50/Claymore-type mines confirmed? Presumably these would be used with trip wires. Or, have I missed your point. Are you specifically interested in home-made booby traps?

Honestly, I don't see a problem with carrying two long arms, or two melee weapons on the back. Anyone carrying a Mosin would be smart to pair that up with a shotgun for close work. An even better way to facilitate this would be to introduce a three point sling. Having said that there are some related issues that bug me. We really do need better holster options for secondary arms. I haven't seen a chest holster for a while, so I don't even know if it still spawns. Additionally, it would be nice to have a belt, or a thigh holster. I would like to get my secondary out of my backpack and I think that accessing anything in the pack should have a time penalty, regardless of whether it is a cut-down long arm, a secondary arm, or a melee weapon. There is nothing new here. All of this has been covered in the past, but I just needed to vent a bit.

DayZ Dev hints at possible DX 12 Engine, are you all willing to wait? I know I am
BleedoutBill replied to john5220's topic in General Discussion
Many folks will wait a few months for the bugs to be addressed, before switching to W10. Many lower skilled folks may never upgrade. Still others will not want to to disturb "their setup" if they do not see a compelling benefit. Hell, there are a lot of folks who are still running XP. I am sure that there are other scenarios. The point that I was making is that for a host of reasons, it may take a while for there to be a meaningful adoption rate for W10. At the same time, BI will most likely want to appeal to the widest possible audience and that will not likely include those who are running W10. It is hard to project out ten months +/-, so there are a lot of unknowns to wrestle with.
