I don't think anyone is ignoring the OP, this is just a very unusual probem. As I recall, there are only three files in the ~/My Documents/dayz folder (I'm on my Linux box right now, so sorry I can't give more specifics). All of the config files can be viewed with a text editor, but it may be difficult to spot an error, at first glance. Therefore, I agree with pirgrim. Start by renaming the dayz folder. Rename it to dayx, or dayz_original for example, so that you can easily return to a known starting point, if that becomes necessary. Start the game and it will automatically generate new, default config files. Go into the game menus and adjust your monitor resolution and other preferances. Let us know if the problem persists. Also, don't forget to have Steam verify the local game files.

At the risk of raking all of this up again, there is no point in having permanent death, if it is possible to start over with all of your gear intact. There should be consequences for risky behavior and if we negate permanent death, we might as well add quick saves and other arcade-like features. Sorry, but permanent death is a key element that separates DayZ from the masses.

What are these green markers on GPS?

On most topographical maps, they represent mountain peaks. -
Yes, enough of these distractions. We need to sort out the Mosin bi-pod dilemma!

I don't currently use the improvised bow. but I desperately want a viable bow in the game. My preference would be for a relatively compact recurve (as opposed to a long bow), but I'd take anything that works. It's the perfect compliment to a player with a stealthy play style (like me) and it would also be great for mounted play (if horses ever become a thing). I've tinkered with the crossbow, but the bolts are scarcer than hens teeth. I'm not going to lug that damn thing around, with only two bolts in my inventory. Come on devs, show the bow some love!

The devs have confirmed that they are working on new trees. I am hopeful (not holding my breath) that new engine modules will support fog/mist in the morning, or after rain. But, I don't think that we'll ever see anything like what they have in Kingdom Come: Deliverance. That game gives me a woodie everytime I see a clip.

This is a scream! It reminds me of the mini-series "The Wire" where a couple of assassins were killing people with a nail gun. The scene where they were in the hardware store shopping for the nail gun made me piss my pants, it was so funny! If you haven't seen "The Wire," I highly recommend it to you.

Windows XP (as well as any other unmaintained code) is a public nuisance and it should not be connected to the Internet. Have a look at http://map.ipviking.com/ from time to time and look at all of the zombie PCs participating in DDOS and other attacks. Allowing this code to have Internet access is not simply about you and your careful/carelessness. It puts all of us at risk. Running the latest OS does not make you immune to the bad guys, but leaving the back door wide open, with milk and cookies sitting on the counter is extremely irresponsible.

Lets get real, the real issue with this game
BleedoutBill replied to Alex Leonhart's topic in General Discussion
I didn't believe the first several dozen people, but you've convinced me. The game engine is crap. Thanks for clearing that up for me. When all of this got started, BI didn't have a suitable game engine for a MMO. They do military simulators, remember? They obviously thought that the current engine had the best chance of being adapted. Yes, it's an antique relic, but so what. There can't be more than a few thousand people who will buy into the whole zombie genre; it's just a passing fad, right? Well, as it turns out, BI were wrong on several counts. The zombie genre has exploded and millions of people have purchased DayZ, even before it came out of alpha development. Now, with a substantial (and demanding) player base and the necessary funding, they are rewriting the game engine in order to introduce needed features and improve performance. I guess where they went wrong is by not firing all of the AI, art and animation people first. It's much better that they complete all of the work on the game engine first and then they can hire the AI, art and animation teams later. It would be a major faux pas to show any progress in these areas, before they ensure that we have a stable 60FPS under all possible circumstances, right? As near as I can determine, the game engine was written in one huge, monolithic block of code. The devs first task was to break this down into individual modules, each specializing in different areas of game function. This is a HUGE amount of work and at the end of the day, it doesn't affect game performace one bit. What it does do, however, is to make it easy for devs to write new, replacemnet modules, that can be more easily plugged in to the core engine. These new modules can introduce new features, or performance improvements, or both. If they are still on schedule, we expect to see the replacement of a key module, the renderer, at the end of March. The renderer takes the output from other modules and draws the picture on your monitor. This new module should have much better lighting effects as well as better performance due to its more efficient culling strategy. As time goes on, additional modules will be written and plugged into the game. Each will bring various improvements and enhancements. For the TL DR crowd, we are finally at the point where some sigificant core improvements can now be introduced into the game. Since this is all new code, there are bound to be bugs, but we are finally on the brink of moving forward. -
We currently have cows, goats, chickens, deer, hogs, etc. in game and I haven't seen any of them fall over dead, because someone didn't feed them. Of course it would be a hoot if the devs would introduce cow tipping! :D I have seen no indication that these animals must eat and drink, as the characters do, in order to survive. I think this is a reasonable simplification. I think the solution is simple. If you log out, the horse should go into a grazing mode (not because it needs to eat, but because this is normal horse behavior) within a 100m radius of your log out point. If you want the horse to be there when you get back, you need to be selective about where you log out. If the horse gets stolen, or run over by a truck while you are logged out, then, "Them's the brakes!" If we get horses, I think the devs need to fix the bow situation, once and for all. I would fancy Mongol-type recurve, composit bows. Supposedly, a skilled Mongol archer could use these with deadly effect out to 500m. If anyone is interested, I hve similar thoughts about dogs. If you are eating something, the dog should beg for food. Not because the dog will die from starvation, but because this is normal dog behavior. If you have spare food, you can give it to the dog to maintain the relationship and make it unlikely that the dog will abandon you for a different master. If you can't, or don't give the dog food, the dog should move on and find someone else to bond with.

Guide to etiquette? How to be new right?
BleedoutBill replied to CabbageNPeas's topic in New Player Discussion
Peoply will try to kill you for a variety of reasons. Whether they give you an excuse, or not is pretty irreleant. At the most basic, you are viewed as a threat. If you don't try t kill me right now, you may follow me and try to covertly kill me later. On top of that, you may have loot that I need to survive. Not speaking to me, makes me even more suspicious of your motives. Trying to type and maintain situational awareness puts you at a significant disadvantage. Being a new player, it makes sense to start on a low pop server, so that you have a chance to figure out what all of the buttons do, without the additional drama of someone chasing you around with an ax. Eventually, though, you will have to learn how to interact with others. But first of all, never forget rule #1 - Tust no one! You have to be aware of your surroundings at all times. Always study your victm ... er ... potential new friend prior to making contact. Ideally, watch him interact with others. Is he a bandit, a homicidal maniac, friendly? Does it make sense to make contact with this idividual, or is it too risky? Ask yourself, What do I hope to gain by making contact? If you decide to proceed, you need to do so from a postion of power and maintain control over the situation. Keep in mind that some will try to put you at ease, only to murder you 30 minutes later, when your guard is down. Give some thought to your approach. Do not run up to people and invade their person space. This could be misunderstood as a threatening gesture. Do not repeatedly yell, "Friendly, friendly, friendly, friendly, friendly ...." This is VERY annoying! All interactions are inherently dangerous. Be prepared to kill, or be killed. -

Yes, but if it worked correctly, I wouldn't have to manually shoulder my weapon to pick up the food and then manually take my weapon back out, when I have finished. As I said, it's a minor annoyance, but an annoyance none the less. Thanks for your feedback. -

Thanks. I just hopped off of exp and it's happening at least 70%, if not 80% of the time. I'm going to submit a ticket on this and the Makarov. With two pristine pistols and pristine ammo, I couldn't chamber any rounds. Cheers! -

Apart from the well documented issues with the current build, I'm wondering if anyone else is having issues with eating. Specifically, if I come across an orange, for instance, I right click on it and select "eat". My character shoulders the long arm, but fails to pick up the orange. I have to right click on it a second time, select "cancel current action" and then select "eat" eat again. This has always been an issue for me, if I turn away from the object, before my character picks it up. But on the last couple of builds, my character fails to pick the item up ~70% of the time, even when I do not move away. It's a minor annoyance, but I'm just curious to see if it's only me, before I document the issue. -

Sorry, but no one runs it at a stable 60FPS. You have unreasonable expectations for this stage of the development. Come back in a few months and check again.
