Exp Update: 0.55.126884 Discussion

Same here. I was being stealthy, and I was lucky to engage them only one a a time. In a two square block area of Solnichny, there were at least a half dozen zeds wandering around. As I reconnoitered they seemed to be every-freakin'-where! I don't know how many were there in total, but it looked like at least two dozen, if not more ... and this is a pretty small town! In my opinion, running, or shooting firearms would attract too much unwanted attention. Going forward, our strategies will necessarily have to change. -

The devs have made the commitment to ensure that the game is mod friendly, but they don't intend to oficially support alternate maps. That is a task for the mod community, after the game launches. And yes, there is a lot more equipment and weapons in the pipeline. -
The fire ax is arguably the best melee weapon, but the ax, sledge hammer and pick ax are all extremely good. If you are a fresh spawn with no melee weapon, anything in the hand will help, even a can of beans. No matter what you have, the key is to aim for the head ... and keep moving, to make yourself a more difficult target.

+1 for screaming like a little girl. I'm sure that they only wanted to play with you.

[Guide] Setting up an Xbox 360 Controller for DayZ
BleedoutBill replied to Mucwa's topic in New Player Discussion
I am a confirmed keyboard and mouse guy when it comes to FPS. If you don't like the K&M, I couldn't give two shits! However, when it comes to driving, I find that my wireless XBOX360 controller is a much better tool for the task at hand. If this makes you an unhappy troll, that's your problem. Before I go to the trouble and expense of getting my controller to work with DayZ, can someone tell me if the V3S is still going to steer like a slug, or am I going to curse myself for not enabling my controller sooner? Cheers! -

There ya go! Give us some big, manly servers to play on!!! -
Proper bandits do not KOS. They are much more skilled than that. Too bad we don't see more of them.

It sounds like you have the right attitude and you're having the time of your life.Too many people become obsessive about their gear and it makes them miserable. You have many exciting adventures ahead of you! You will be happy to know that the new zombie AI is currently being tested on the experimental servers. You can use stealth techniques against them, but if they see you, they are much more agressive. :D

As Tatanko said, simply by logging onto a server, we are providing valuable data. If you don't believe him, perhaps you'll believe Eugen: http://twitter.com/eugenharton/status/576323966287118336 -
What can I UPGRADE in my PC to make DayZ run better?
BleedoutBill replied to goodfellas2's topic in Troubleshooting
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but DayZ just doesn't run as well on AMD processors. Even Intel i7 CPUs struggle with this game. Therefore, there's not a damn thing that you can do, unless you are prepared to drop more cash on an Intel CPU and motherboard. Your best bet is to refer to some of the performance guides and try editing the scene complexity, draw distance and shadow distance in your config file. -

People get paranoid and imagine that they hear things, especially when it is quiet. I like this idea, but I disagree that loud clanging and soda cans are the best way to accomplish the desired effect. I think there are ways to ramp up the paranoia level, without making everyone think that the game has a bug ... which it currently does. One way would be to have more chickens in the rural areas. They would have a normal. relaxed behavior and a startled behavior, where they make lots of noise (flapping and squawking and so forth). If I heard a startled chicken nearby, I would be desperate to determine if someone startled the chicken, or if the damn thing was just screwing with me. FC4 has a mechanic where four, or five birds hide in the grass. If you come to close, they take flight with ample flapping noises. The first few times you hear it it scares the hell out of you. In the big scheme of things, it would be easy to implement and the noise could also be played randomly, in order to mess with your brain. Did someone just scare the birds, or are they just moving on to go do bird things? Other, appropriate noises could also be played, like footsteps, or twigs snapping (in the wooded areas), or breathing. I am a fan of more ambient noises. In addition to the birds singing, we should also have crickets chirping and frogs croaking ... especially at night. We definitely need an owl at night, too!. Anyway, how scary would it be if everything suddenly went quiet? I think I'd be on the edge of my seat, in a virtual panic! -
I've never seen a mag for the carbine, so I've never even picked one up. There is no point in wasting time with it, since the SKS and repeater are so plentiful and there is no need to go on a snipe hunt (for a magazine), in order to use them.

I am having a difficult time following your logic. The zeds are people ... infected, but still people. If they were animals, it wouldn't matter if you wear a safety-orange raincoat, because most animals do not have color vision. But, people do. In a perfect world, the color of your clothing should have a bearing on the likelihood of your detection. However, I would anticipate that the code involved could be quite complex. Therefore, I am OK, if the devs decide to make this simplification for the sake of making the game run smoother. But ideally, clothing color should matter. -

Yeah, during one of the "no message received" incidents, I strolled right up to one, to check her out. She was making a low growling noise, but suddenly I had a much louder gurgling/growling noise in my right ear cup. It was really creepy! The other creepy thing was the doors opening and closing all by themselves. It really boosted the paranoia level up to 11. -

I set the max ping to 500ms in the server browser. Once in a while I see US Northeast 0-1 and 0-2 pop up, but they are missing, more than they are there and the ping is pretty erratic, bouncing between 125 ms and >500ms. I don't see any other experimental servers at all. I did manage to get on Northeast 0-1 three, or four times, but within a couple of minutes, I get the dreaded, "No message received." message. So, it looks like I'm back over to stable until Monday. The zeds are absolutely everywhere and they are not making a lot of noise, so I was startled a couple of times. Whacking them with a great bloody sledge hammer was good fun, as it makes them take a step back, but due to desync, they still get their licks in. Still, it was fun while it lasted. -

If the game could be shut down for a weekend, that might make sense, but the magnitude of the project is large enough that it will take months to resolve. Besides, I'm sure that they will continue to need feedback and bug reports, as they make the necessary changes and updates. -

Thanks Eugen, now that you have explained the situation, that makes complete sense. We are essentially running two complete versions of the game, side by side, so that is bound to stress things to the limit. The recent additions of the new, as yet unproven, modules for AI and character movement complicates the situation, even more. It would seem that we are in for a bumpy road, while all of the old tech gets ported over to the new modules. So long as you continue to be accessible and transparent, I am sure that the bulk of us will be only too happy to help track down bugs. Thanks for keeping us in the loop and explaining what's gong on. Cheers! -

With few exceptions, I keep seeing complaints about the lack of firearms spawning, It would seem that the devs intend that 0.55 be about zed AI and melee combat. They can learn precious little about these subjests, if we are picking zeds off from 100 meters away with automatic weapons. So, roll your sleeves up, grab a melee weapon, or in the worse case a can of beans and lets go out and wreck some zombies! -
So What Kind of Rig do you have?
BleedoutBill replied to Masprotech's topic in Technology/Programming
I recently did a build for a friend based on an i5 4690K and a GTX970. It's a very sweet combination and it handles DayZ particularly well. It seldom goes below 40FPS. -
They seem to dry quicker, if you wring them out a few times.
