    Resenting DayZ

Welcome to the apocalypse! As you've probably been able to piece together, a new mechanism was just introduced to control loot spawns. This mechanism is incomplete and has not yet been properly tuned. Folks who had previously relied on canned goods for their food, are having difficulty making the transition to other sources of food, while the devs continue the development of the new loot control mechanism, AKA the Central Loot Economy (CLE). Loot tends to be much more prevalent, the further inland that you go. But, how to get there? Probably the most popular and readily available food is apples. You can only get apples from apple trees and your hands must be empty, in order to get a prompt to search for them. You won't get an apple on every single search. You have to be patient, as it does take time. Apples don't provide a lot of energy, but they are a great source of moisture. So, since they are poor in energy, be prepared to eat a lot of them. Just as with apples, you can also pick berries from certain bushes. Berries tend to provide much more energy than apples, but beware, some berries are poisonous! Between apples, berries and water wells, you should have no trouble moving a couple of towns inland. Once there you can collect farming and / or hunting equipment. If you go further still, you'll see canned goods among the loot. But, before you do anything, you should find a suitable stone on the beach and craft a stone knife for yourself. You'll find it to be incredibly useful. Hunting provides food as well as leather, bone and guts which can all be crafted into useful items. Cooking your food is always a good idea, otherwise you risk disease. The same goes for drinking from stagnate ponds; you're risking disease, unless your immune system is in top shape. If you decide to do some farming, you'll find that if watered and fertilized, the vegetables will grow surprisingly quickly. It is also possible to mix up a pesticide, if your garden becomes infested with insects. The apocalypse does not come with an instruction manual. However, some of the vids on the WOBO YouTube channel may help you to better understand some of the game mechanics. Good luck!

    Dating a Zombie

I saw here wandering around in a field for quite a long time, near Kamyshovo. She sure does like the outdoors. She didn't have much to say to me, just a couple of grunts, as she ran me off. I guess she just wanted some alone time. I think that she must be Irish, because she has one hell of a temper!
  3. I don't quite know where to start. There are so many exciting developments on the horizon, which will enhance the game in so many important ways. This is my short list: CLE with regional control - we are living through this right now and it can be a pretty bumpy road, until this mechanic if fully implemented and tuned. Dynamic events - this will add a sorely needed element of unpredictability and keep the game fresh. Animal predators - Even when you are completely alone in the deep forest, there should always be an element of danger. Animal companions - I think there is a lot of potential here that has never really been explored in other games. New character controller and the elimination of legacy mechanics - New character capabilities and a significant performance boost ... what's not to like? New renderer with DX12 implementation - proper culling, advanced particle effects (fog anyone?) and a significant performance boost. I might very well feel differently tomorrow, but if I had to pick just one today, it may be the character controller and the elimination of legacy mechanics. I really liked the jumping teaser that was posted. Limping and other animations will be awesome. I would like to be able to eat, without standing up. I would like to be able to do more than one thing at a time, such as walking while eating an apple. In general, more fluid motions and the smooth transition between actions will be a very welcome development.
  4. Butane - what's the chance that this is a precursor to having lighters in-game?

    Massivly unplayable

Many things in life are decidedly not fun, but frequently they provide a sense of satisfaction for a job well done. The very premise of this game (surviving an apocalypse) has nothing, whatsoever to do with fun. Therefore, I fundamentally disagree that every aspect of the game must be fun, otherwise it is somehow a failure. A lot of people are picking on apples (no pun intended) because that mechanic is tedious. They then attempt to condemn the entire game by association. As has already been pointed out, there are many different ways to survive and in a survival game, none of them should be trivial. Eating apples is completely optional and it is not a requirement. There are many different ways to secure nourishment and each should have its own risks and benefits. The benefits of apples are obvious, but what are the risks? They can't shoot shoot you, they can't attack and eat you, they can't trick you into thinking they are your friend, only to kill you in your sleep. No, the risk is that in order to collect apples, you must expose yourself and allow yourself to become extremely vulnerable, usually in a relatively urban, or suburban area (in other words, there will likely be zeds and other players nearby), for a significant amount of time. It is a very risky tactic to stand, or sit still in the open for any significant length of time. It is worse still, if you are not able to have a weapon in your hands, while doing it. When I pick apples, I do not feel bored. What I do feel is paranoia and the more apples I pick, the more paranoid I become. If I can fill a pack with apples and that provides the fuel that I need to reach the next town, I first feel an immediate sense of relief, followed by the satisfaction of completing the task without getting my head blown off. TL/DR - It is necessary to engage in very risky behavior, in order to pick apples, so I only collect them as a last resort. I'd rather melee with a zed than sit exposed under an apple tree, for any significant length of time.

    Massivly unplayable

Apples provide quite a lot of moisture and enough energy to keep you alive (if you aren't running all over creation). I wouldn't want to live on them exclusively, although it is entirely possible, but they are a great food of last resort, in the event that things don't go your way. I lived on apples exclusively for my first several hours in 0.56 Exp. They enabled me to get far enough inland that I could secure all of the food, weapons and gear that I needed. Tedious, yes, but useless ... I would have to disagree. If you don't have the patience to wait until the CLE is fully implemented and tuned, or if you truly believe that the game is FUBAR, then you definitely need to take a break and check back in, in a few months.

The DayZ world is like a Ride......

Since we're all busting balls, in the most friendly way possible of course, let us take your recommendation, but substitute the actual meaning of the contraction, you're. Or "Unhooked you are internet cable while in game." No, that doesn't sound quite right to me, so I have marked it in red. I think that we somehow need to indicate to whom the Internet cable belongs. As a matter of fact, on reflection, I think serelaw got it right on his first attempt. I sincerely hope that your English professors do not frequent this forum. Please forgive me, but when you started strutting around with your undergrad degree on your shoulder, I just could not help myself. Still friends? :)

    Lunch Parameters

He made me hungry and alas, my cupboard was bare. Apart from some tuna, my options were pretty slim. I'm off to the grocery store tomorrow to get some of those aforementioned lunch meats and cheeses.
  13. It's not so much a hive thing, but the physical server hardware that is hosting your game (and possibly several other games). It may help to imagine that an instance of the game is running on a server and a second instance of the game is running on your PC. The server version is the master and what it says goes. Your PC version is subservient, but it is free to make intelligent estimates, based on your inputs & actions. A constant stream of communication keeps the two games in synch. The problem occurs when the two briefly loose communication and the two games go out of synch. This typically happens when the server becomes busy and, therefore, momentarily unresponsive. Once the server "catches up" with what you have been doing for the past couple of seconds, a reconciliation needs to happen. The reconciliation will happen on the PC side and it often takes the form of rubber banding and other strange behavior. Coincidentally, Rocket spoke about some of these issues just a few hours ago: http://www.reddit.com/r/dayz/comments/34hsjh/will_this_game_ever_feature_client_prediction/
  14. The server is overloaded. Even if there were only a few players on your server, each physical server may be running many instances of this game, or other games, or other virtual machines.

    Lunch Parameters

Yeah, just about all of the lunch - AKA launch parameters have been deprecated and they cause more problems than they solve. I'm parameter free and I'm loving it!!! Now, back to tuna ...

    Lunch Parameters

Do you prefer the tuna packed in oil, or water? Personally, I like chunk white, or solid white in water. The tuna in oil tastes a little too "fishy" to me, for some reason.
  18. Correct it is there to help you interact with the environment. If you play Far Cry 3 with Ziggy's mod installed, you'll see just how difficult it is (in something that is borderline an arcade game) to do something as simply as looting a body.
  19. Why would you assume that firing from the hip should be inherently accurate? Unless I was using a shotgun, I don't think that I could hit a damn thing that was more than 10m away, unless I aimed down the sights. The devs may not be trying to model real life in minute detail, but they certainly are not building an arcade game.
  20. What other early access game have you played, where right in the middle of development the devs decided to rewrite the game engine, renderer, netcode, character controller, AI, and other key software, while at the same time making a concerted effort to maintain a somewhat playable game for those of us who supported the game though the early access program? In my experience, the public do not get access to a project (closed, open, alpha, beta, or otherwise), until all of these key assets (and more) are nailed down. It's only due to the success of the early access program that the devs now have the funding to address fundamental flaws / constraints, that we otherwise would have had to put up with. Sure development will take longer and the new code will undoubtedly be buggy when it is first introduced, but the quality of the finished game will be dramatically better, than if the devs had been forced to stick with the original engine. I would encourage you to take a step back and look at the big picture.

Couple Of Protective Suits Id Like To See In Game

Someone recently posted some pics of some Russian biological hazmat suits. They looked particularly cool (sorry, can't put my finger on the post). While they would not be of any use to a survivor (except perhaps for role playing), who by definition is immune to the virus, these suits would look great on some of the zeds.

Hicks on Twitter: Upcoming Map Change(s)

I haven't given up on dense trees yet. I seem to remember that the devs were planning to rework the tree models. If so, this in conjunction with some undergrowth could really transform the remaining rural areas. Once we get the full implementation of DX11, we could even see some fog/mist added to the mix.

Hicks on Twitter: Upcoming Map Change(s)

There is a vertical white bar that appears in the top, left center of this screen capture. That bar/road/building is not on the current DayZ DB map. I don't know if that is "the change," or if more extensive changes are planned.
