Who will be the first to test the hotbar and see if it jacks up your inventory?

I feel you. I found a MP5 with all of the trimmings, hand guard, mags (3-30 round mags and 2-15 rounders), including a pristine ACOG and I never had a chance to make any smoke and noise with it. :(

No, but I went for several hours before finding any warm clothes and I'm really surprised that I never got the shakes. I suspect that the ambient temperature must have been tweaked. Recently, I've been wearing a hunting jacket and a high-cap vest and I haven't had any trouble with getting too warm. I don't tend to do much running, though, unless I'm being chased.

Exactly! I'm out in the open, squatting next to a well, trying to fill my water bottle. My rifle is on the ground next to me and there is a tent in the house, that is just behind me. Needless to say, I'm anxious to get back and tie up a few loose ends.

I was just having a bit of fun teasing a zed. I was at the industrial site, just East of Stary Yar. I got a zed to chase me and I ran North, off of the map. I wasn't surprised that she didn't follow me off of the map, but I was surprised that she stopped several meters short of the edge and growled at me. So, she apparently could still "see" me, but she wasn't having any of the leaving her familiar haunts.

By all means remove this post mods if you think it shouldn't be here, just so long as you are aware of it, you can't make it happen, indeed this incident at the fountain was the first time where a dupe happened for me. A lot of that sort of strange behavior is linked to using the hot bar. I no longer experience those problems, since I stopped using it.

    Exp Update: 0.56.127TheBeast.

A cooking pot takes up less inventory space and it cooks more food at once, so it's a time saver. Currently, you can even store other items in the pot. Same with the skillet. Additionally, it makes for a pretty good melee weapon. I confess that I haven't tried to hit any one with a cooking pot yet, so I don't know how effective they may be. The stick takes up a lot of inventory space and you can only store one food item on it (for example apples, or berries). The stick can be used for other purposes, though, including as a weapon, so it is much more flexible. You no longer have to search for matches, but if you find them, so much the better. Matches take up very little space, but if you can't find them, you have other options. It's all about options and choice and it is the same with computers. Some people like an operating system that enables a task to be performed several different ways, according to the user's preference and / or convenience. Other people are uncomfortable with choice and so they purchase Apple products. :D

I absolutely agree, but in addition to that, not only do you have to "spend" time on apples, you typically have to expose yourself and risk your safety in order to collect apples. Most apple trees "grow" near developed areas, which are typically the haunts of zeds and will, no doubt, attract other players due to the potential for loot. I find that standing still under an apple tree for extended periods, without a weapon in my hands, is a very uncomfortable position to be in.

    Exp Update: 0.56.127TheBeast.

The CLE was introduced into 0.55 Exp. It seemed to work fine, with the exception that the fruit and veggies were invisible, but I expect that this issue was not directly caused by the CLE. When 0.55 Stable was released with CLE and exposed to proper stress testing, some servers did not behave as expected. Eventually, the devs were able to identify two problems, which are scheduled to be addressed in the 0.56 Stable build. One would expect that those two fixes are currently being tested in the 0.56 Exp build. Per the April 14 Status report, in an effort to mitigate the loot spawn issues, the devs switched 0.55 Stable over to the legacy placeholder loot spawning system.

    Exp Update: 0.56.127TheBeast.

I have found loot in places where I have't seen it spawn in nine months, or more and a few paces where I have never seen it spawn. Also, I haven't seen it spawn in in places where it commonly used to spawn up until 0.55. Ever since the beginning, the devs have represented the game as a survival, horror game. Some had discovered that due to its ARMA heritage, that it was also a pretty fun PVP free for all. Now that the devs are getting around to introducing farming, hunting, diseases and other survival elements, a vocal minority are complaining that the devs have ruined the (PVP) game. In reality, while PVP was always possible, that was never the thrust of the game. There are also quite a few people complaining that the game is a running and / or a starvation simulator, as if the devs could pull fully working vehicles and a feature complete and perfectly tuned CLE out of their butts. It was in response to these complaints that Hicks made his now famous remark. By the way, he said this on May 13, you only need to check his Twitter account to see the context. The rare, but not that rare quote was in response to complaints about the lack of loot on 0.55 stable, when the devs discovered that there was, in fact, a bug with the CLE and that it was not spawning loot as intended. Rabbit snares work exactly like apple trees and berry bushes. They don't catch rabbits that are scurrying around the countryside, the CLE spawns a dead rabbit into the snare, the same way that apples ad berries are spawned into the game. Ask ten people and you will get eleven opinions on the best location to place the snare. The key is to leave the area. While it is possible, most of the time loot, including dead rabbits, will not spawn within the immediate vicinity of a player.

Good question. I haven't seen any tubes, or soldering irons in game, so if it is possible to repair a damaged radio, I'll be damned if I know where to start. On second thought, I believe that fuses are going to be introduced for vehicle repair. Perhaps a fuse (when they become available) will fix your radio?

    Resenting DayZ

Welcome to the apocalypse! As you've probably been able to piece together, a new mechanism was just introduced to control loot spawns. This mechanism is incomplete and has not yet been properly tuned. Folks who had previously relied on canned goods for their food, are having difficulty making the transition to other sources of food, while the devs continue the development of the new loot control mechanism, AKA the Central Loot Economy (CLE). Loot tends to be much more prevalent, the further inland that you go. But, how to get there? Probably the most popular and readily available food is apples. You can only get apples from apple trees and your hands must be empty, in order to get a prompt to search for them. You won't get an apple on every single search. You have to be patient, as it does take time. Apples don't provide a lot of energy, but they are a great source of moisture. So, since they are poor in energy, be prepared to eat a lot of them. Just as with apples, you can also pick berries from certain bushes. Berries tend to provide much more energy than apples, but beware, some berries are poisonous! Between apples, berries and water wells, you should have no trouble moving a couple of towns inland. Once there you can collect farming and / or hunting equipment. If you go further still, you'll see canned goods among the loot. But, before you do anything, you should find a suitable stone on the beach and craft a stone knife for yourself. You'll find it to be incredibly useful. Hunting provides food as well as leather, bone and guts which can all be crafted into useful items. Cooking your food is always a good idea, otherwise you risk disease. The same goes for drinking from stagnate ponds; you're risking disease, unless your immune system is in top shape. If you decide to do some farming, you'll find that if watered and fertilized, the vegetables will grow surprisingly quickly. It is also possible to mix up a pesticide, if your garden becomes infested with insects. The apocalypse does not come with an instruction manual. However, some of the vids on the WOBO YouTube channel may help you to better understand some of the game mechanics. Good luck!

    Exp Update: 0.56.127TheBeast.

^ This I enjoy deconstructing the game and coming up with a workable survival strategy. I then test and refine my strategy. I enjoy the struggle and I get an immense sense of satisfaction by overcoming adversity. If surviving was easy, there would be no sense of accomplishment. If the game was fun, that would be an added benefit, but that's not really why I play.

If things don't improve once we have a more granular, regional control over the loot, then I will wholeheartedly agree with you.

    Exp Update: 0.56.127TheBeast.

That is the point that I was making; unfortunately there aren't many others who would agree with us. As Hicks famously said, "It's not for everyone and that's OK." Too many forget that this is not a complete, working game. We are only seeing the first iteration of the CLE. It is not feature complete, all spawn points have not yet been configured and the system has not been tuned. In order to tune the CLE, the devs have to first determine the minimum amount of loot necessary, in order to provide the experience that they want the game to deliver. So, how to they go about determining that, crystal ball? No, they do it the old fashioned way. They throw a build up on Experimental and they collect data. Honestly, it is unrealistic to expect that as these new mechanics are introduced that there will not be teething pains. It's also unrealistic to expect the devs to be able to pull a working tune out of their butts on the first go. I remember the rage quitting, when the temperature mechanic was first introduced. People complained that they kept freezing to death, but that it was too much trouble to build a fire. Then there was the rain. It was impossible to survive with all of the rain, but it was too much trouble to find a rain coat. Now it's impossible to survive, because it's too much trouble to pick apples, berries, farm, hunt, fish, etc. As each mechanic is introduced, we get the same lame complaints and excuses, over and over. As we came to grips with the temperature and the rain, we adapted and we overcame. Meanwhile, the devs got the data that they needed, they tuned the mechanics and suddenly, staying warm and dry is now no longer the insurmountable problem that it once was. Similarly, it is possible to live off of the land while the devs gather the data that they need to finish their work on the CLE. If picking apples is not your cup of tea, then so be it. By all means take a break. It may take longer without your help, but eventually the devs will collect the data that they need to get the CLE completed and properly tuned. Then, we can all move on to the next mechanic that renders the game unplayable and start the cycle all over again!
