I may be imagining things, but weren't the MOM-50/Claymore-type mines confirmed? Presumably these would be used with trip wires. Or, have I missed your point. Are you specifically interested in home-made booby traps?

Honestly, I don't see a problem with carrying two long arms, or two melee weapons on the back. Anyone carrying a Mosin would be smart to pair that up with a shotgun for close work. An even better way to facilitate this would be to introduce a three point sling. Having said that there are some related issues that bug me. We really do need better holster options for secondary arms. I haven't seen a chest holster for a while, so I don't even know if it still spawns. Additionally, it would be nice to have a belt, or a thigh holster. I would like to get my secondary out of my backpack and I think that accessing anything in the pack should have a time penalty, regardless of whether it is a cut-down long arm, a secondary arm, or a melee weapon. There is nothing new here. All of this has been covered in the past, but I just needed to vent a bit.

DayZ Dev hints at possible DX 12 Engine, are you all willing to wait? I know I am
BleedoutBill replied to john5220's topic in General Discussion
Many folks will wait a few months for the bugs to be addressed, before switching to W10. Many lower skilled folks may never upgrade. Still others will not want to to disturb "their setup" if they do not see a compelling benefit. Hell, there are a lot of folks who are still running XP. I am sure that there are other scenarios. The point that I was making is that for a host of reasons, it may take a while for there to be a meaningful adoption rate for W10. At the same time, BI will most likely want to appeal to the widest possible audience and that will not likely include those who are running W10. It is hard to project out ten months +/-, so there are a lot of unknowns to wrestle with. -
DayZ Dev hints at possible DX 12 Engine, are you all willing to wait? I know I am
BleedoutBill replied to john5220's topic in General Discussion
Since this engine is being developed for DayZ as well as future titles, I think that it is safe to assume that it will eventually support DX12 and DX11 will only be an interim step. The big question is, can the devs get satisfactory performance out of the engine via optimization, prior to adopting DX12. I do not think that we currently have sufficient information to make this determination. As a matter of fact, there are many unanswered questions: DX12 is only available in W10, which will not be released until the end of the year +/-. How much horsepower will it take to run W10? Will enough people have already upgraded to W10, by the time that DayZ is ready to launch ver 1.0? How much work will it take for the devs to support DX12? Can a small studio like BI afford to hold DayZ back from release, even though the DX11 version runs satisfactorily? Can a DX12 patch be released as an update, after the game is launched? At this point there are many more unknowns, than knowns. -
Exactly. This is a great tactic for the ones that charge you.

You need to work on your hand to hand skills. Even without a weapon, the zeds are pretty manageable. Just pick a direction, clockwise, or counterclockwise and circle them. Keep moving, as this interrupts their attack. While they are confused, punch them in the head. You may have to knock them down 3+/- times, before they are dead. Melee combat is pretty much the same. Get close, keep moving and aim for the head. Striking/stabbing to the body is pretty ineffective.

So, you want the devs to waste time optimizing the current engine, only to throw all of that work away, when the new engine and renderer is finally implemented? Honestly, that does not sound like a wise use of resources to me. As I understand it they do have team members working on the new engine. As Rocket famously said, "An airplane has two pilots, adding more pilots does not make the plane go faster ..." or words to that effect. A game engine is a huge project. If I recall, I read that it took five years to develop the engine for the new Metal Gear Solid game. You are correct, as additional items are added to the game, the performance goes down. I believe that is the primary, driving factor, as to why the devs are spending so much time and resources to update the engine. Who said that the renderer would be in 0.53? My recollection is that they were optimistic that they may be able to introduce it at the end of Q1. I don't recall any mention of a specific build. I think the bottom line is that we are all getting impatient for the improvements and understandably so. We don't see the improvements in the game yet, because the engine is not moduar, facilitating the introduction of every little improvement as they become available. Brian Hicks specifically mentions that AI and the renderer are being developed in a different branch of the code. Please reread the February 06 Status Report, where he characterizes the project of making the engine more modular as a massive task, requiring a significant amount of man hours. They are doing this, so that down the road, components like a new renderer can be more easily "plugged in" once they become available. Don't forget that just making the engine modular does not bring any performance benefits, it merely facilitates the devs ability to effectively address different components of the game, individually. Many of these components, such as the renderer, will themselves be huge projects. If I had one criticism, it would probably be that the enormity of this task has not been explained in plain language. If it had been, we wouldn't have so many folks with unrealistically high expectations, in terms of the time that this sort of project takes.

Anyone feel the .52 nerf to the V3S was too much?
BleedoutBill replied to DickCheney's topic in General Discussion
If you will recall, this truck will be fitted with a manual transmission. You will have to downshift to go up hills. Until the transmission is fully implemented, we are bound to have problems. -
First, there is nothing to do in DayZ, because the game was designed to be that way. It is an open sandbox that allows you do do virtually anything that you want. I wouldn't expect this to change significantly between now and the final release, because it is a key key pillar of the "vision." The "Spawn/Gear-up/PVP Endgame cycle is a choice that you make. If you are bored with it (which does not surprise me), that would suggest a lack of imagination on your part. I don't appreciate you telling me that the "Lone Wolf" style is not a good, or a valid one. I have no trouble, whatsoever, keeping myself entertained for hours on end, with this play style. I enjoy exploring and competing against the elements. Besides, with my frame rate in Cherno, I wouldn't be much of a challenge to you anyway, so where is the fun in mowing down the helpless? It would be nothing but a waste of good ammunition. Personally, nothing would make me happier, than if the devs would stop spawning military gear at the NWAF and turn the spawn back on at the Balota airstrip. This would make it more convenient for those who are only interested in "The Endgame" and it would also make it less likely that I will inadvertently run into a marauding group of paramilitary lunatics, whose only interest is in adding more notches to their firearm. Now, not content with PVPing with willing participants, you want the devs to tell you who has been alive the longest and presumably has the most to loose. Not only that, but you also want the devs to make it easy for you to find these people. Here is my suggestion for you. Meet in Cherno, Electro and Berezino. Choose up sides. Wear your arm bands to signify your alliance and continue to blow each others brains out. And, in your periodic travels to NWAF and it's environs, please consider those of us who are not wearing arm bands to be civilian non-combatants and leave us out of your boring, unimaginative, but totally OK play style.

Know your role, and stick to your words.

Respect? No, sorry. I don't respect any twisted, KOS, bandit, asshat that lies and manipulates, so that they can stab/chop/shoot someone in the back. If you're going to be a twisted, KOS, bandit, asshat, then I say stand up straight and be proud that you are a twisted, KOS, bandit, asshat and be the best twisted, KOS, bandit, asshat that you can be. Just be honest with yourself and everyone else about it. Then maybe, just maybe, I'll respect you for the twisted, KOS, bandit, asshat that you are, even though it's the easy way out of any situation. Rule #1: Trust no one. Rule #2: When in doubt, refer to rule #1. Rule #3: If I trust you, I have only myself to blame. -
The rush of your first moments in Chernarus

I heard it coming from 1KM away. What the hell is that? Sounds like a friggin' space ship. I'm already up to my ass in zeds and now the War of the Worlds is starting. RUN AWAY!!! -
DayZ for purists - Keeping it real

Honestly, I can't understand the criticism. It sounds to me like you guys are having a hoot! I'll check to see if I can get a decent ping to any of your favorite servers. -
Third Person View should be Over-the-Shoulder, NOT a bird's eye view.
BleedoutBill replied to Rags!'s topic in General Discussion
^ Well argued, sir. I think you're on to something. Why stop there, indeed. Give us 3rd person servers only, along with crosshairs. While we're at it, allow us to tag enemies as in Far Cry 3/4, so that we can not only see through walls, but we can do it from over 200M away. Better yet, mimimaps! Yeah, that's it, give us minimaps!! But don't mix blood types, that just wouldn't be realistic!!! Seriously, it's the apocalypse. Civilization has broken down. There is no electricity. But, somehow I effectively have a reconnaissance drone hovering over my head, that follows my every step and relays intel to me in real time? Pretty friggin' epic, eh? Seriously, if the devs need to dumb down the game to better suit consoles, then so be it. There is no compelling reason to make this compromise for PC. Now, before anyone gets too worked up, with over 1,000,000 copies sold, the opinions of 100 of us are statistically irrelevant ... mine included. Besides, opinions are like a-holes. Everyone has one. Let the flames (to which I will not respond) begin! -
Game runs smoothly then freezes for a second and then the fps goes to about 5
BleedoutBill replied to dwell571's topic in Troubleshooting
I periodically had similar freezing/stuttering problem. The frame rate would be chugging along at 25-30FPS and then it would suddenly drop into the low single digits. This seemed to coincide with a lot of hard drive activity. I assumed that the game was struggling with loading textures, but we all know what happens when we assume, eh? So, a couple of updates ago I deleted all of my local content and downloaded a fresh copy of the game to a SSD. This has solved my problem, but whether it was the fresh install, or the SSD is anyone's guess. -
Cleaning is quick and cheap, but ... +1 on checking your power supply.

How to set 21:9 Aspect Ratio for ultra-wide monitor ?
BleedoutBill replied to gorynych's topic in Troubleshooting
I believe that Powerhouse is suggesting that you manually edit your DayZ configuration file. By default it is located in the DayZ folder, which may be found in your Documents folder. The name of the file is DayZ.CFG and you can edit it using notepad. You may want to consider making a back-up copy of this file, before you do anything, though. Cheers!
