The game DayZ is striving to be...

I am happy for you, but this the suggestion thread, so unless you want to address the suggestion in this thread i.e. pro\con, then we are both off topic.

    Private Shard Pricing is Outrageous

It doesn't matter if they rent a server or servers, if they'll give themselves an unfair advantage, other people will not come to play, so the'll have a lot of loot and empty servers they are paying for...

Does anyone dislike the "no military stuff" agrument?

I am not sure if disagree with my reply (or read the comment I replied too) or just having a knee jerk reaction. In any case. Yes, with the key word being authentic, not realistic... hence why we don't run at realistic speeds, why the environmental effects are exaggerated and our health is in overdrive, why the infected haven't died out from the elements, we can grow things that takes month at best conditions, why we have a big item verity (RL or fun) even if many of them realistically should be so rare that they shouldn't have been created ... and why there is loot in place, which realistically would be the first ones to be raided like police stations etc (because it encourage exploration, and easily understood concept that makes for less random play)

    Underground Features

Or a tomb, if they add some more zombies ;) --- Basements, might be nice if they provide another entrance\exit into buildings. Although from what I seen close quarter game play isn't that exciting for that. To me the most appealing thing about underground, is playing in the dark. I know that people hate playing at night, but a small dark basement or tunnel might work.

I don't necessarily agree with all your suggestions\solutions, but those are valid points. Assuming that you don't do anything except sleep, eat and play, you spent 3 full month of your life playing the game, mostly solo. you must be very uhm creative, but I am not sure how this relates to the topic except describing your personal and extreme taste.

Real life can be boring, which is why we add zombies and other unrealistic elements to our games ..

Loot farm? Player playing on a Private Shard will have separate character on that shard, that can't be used anywhere else (like with 1st\3rd person servers).
  9. hmm.. you probably meant to use those as an analog to imply how cute and cuddly we are as a community. However, all I can think of is how bad they smell! Seriously my sister had a couple, and her room smelled like a stable. Also she made the mistake of buying two females, and my father had to stitch one of them, after the other spilled its guts out :/

Fixed that for you. The vast majority of any item, military or otherwise will be a miss. As for weapons, considering that the vast majority of the military and looters will be gone to and zombies aren't likelly to export their gear, them weapons might be spread out a bit but not gone. Besides it is very likelly that during the initial stages of outbreak, international forces became involved and provided supplies and military equipment to the airports.

    I hate bambi

This reminds me recent thread, in which a new spawn asked politely to be given the mercy of suicide by survivor, so he can respawn in another location and got a dickish response. Considering that most people shoot annoying assholes who attack them. I suppose the lesson here was that just like in real life, being a loud mouth jerk is sometimes preferable :/

A possible solution for communicating physiological needs

Yes and no. A combination of animations, audio and visual cues would be a great way to provide extra feedback in an immersive way. However, it can not be considered a viable replacements to the current text based system in terms of functionality. Such cues are best used to indicate status effects, which are shown in the inventory (e.g. dehydrated), while the message provide info on changes to you (e.g. I am warming up) I am not sure which cue works for that.. (You don't need to wipe your brow to know that the surrounding feels warmer) To replace the text messages, such animation can't be limited to the inventory, but show in realtime. This will require a HUGE amount of work, since all cues need to be viable for both 1st/3rd POV. (and I doubt that you can come up with a distinct/informative system) All the above cues take time to play. Even if you spam them at considerably decreased rate compared to messages (making them less informative), those animation will soon become very repetitive and annoying. Furthermore they can't be played when you do something else, like aiming and probably running in 3rd person.(so no real-time feedback) A sequence would show.To keep accurate you'd need to spam me with a sequence of animations. I strongly prefer the current status indicators, then silly animation loops in the inventory of me wiping my brow, my noose or rubbing my tummy. Same goes for 1st/3rd POV, a sequence will be like this weapon jittering animation bug.

A possible solution for communicating physiological needs

What if your character is both hot, dehydrated and hungry, which animation will show? I think it would be cleaner and more informative if we use icons. I suggest that we replace the text notification with icons notification, that would show on persistent but hidden overlay (either expanding the current inventory section or a new one) Those icons will also show on screen for a brief period of time when major status change.
  14. With good ol' story/gameplay trumps realism. In this case setting Day Zero at the time when the Mod had its outbreak would be a great service to the community. So as far as I am concerned you need to invent a plausible reason for the epi-pens, not the otherway around. Speaking of plausibility, quick google suggest that Epi pen has a shelf life of 1-2 years, with many of them remaining usable even 2-3 years after its expiration date. Although that assume proper storage in room temp and not in some gutter in cheronorus, but I can live with that.
  15. Assuming that DayZ takes place in a branching timeline after the Events of Arma2. Then going by Amra2, the year 2009 is notable for to the civil war, which raged for at last a few month, before NATO helped to put an end to it. It make sense that after a civil war they had bigger issues than updating their advertisements.. There is also Arma2 Operation Arrowhead which took place in 2012, and I think that Chernarus military was mentioned there. Personally, I think that Day Zero happened in 2012. (fits the timeline, lore and initial release) I'd LOVE to hear to any lore tibit the devs come up with. (don't care about the weapons talk though)
  16. Mor (DayZ)

    Why all the judgement?

 BS Self interest, Self interest never change. People don't play arma/dayz/shooters for its pacifistic gameplay. They don't rage because some idealistic hero BS, but the good ol' I got killed and wasted a lot of progress. Substitute bandits killing you and PvP\KoS, with Game killing you and hardcore\perma-death modes, and you get the same\usual rage out there.
  17. The point I was trying to get across is that it takes time to master any game (skill) and any person playing any genre who put the time into that game will usually claim its mechanics its what makes it fun, that they require dedication, training, skill.. So for the purpose of this discussion, lets avoid such claims, and look at the mechanics. What we available at to deal with zombies at this stage is: punch/attack to body/head, with zombies generally having two stances and never ending zombie spawn (unless it has been changed). It doesn't really offer much tactical opportunities, encourage cooperation and or anything beyond playing as axe murder with two basic "twitch" moves. English is my third language, so you probably right. The way I intended to use it, was to point out that challenge can be added either by developing a complex mechanic (like arma/dayz firearms handling) by improve the AI and what it can do, or you can "artificial" ramping up zombie strength speed. Personally, I prefer the former kind of challenge.
  18. If you hit the head, crowbars are pretty much as good as a Fireaxe .. otherwise it will take 5 times as many hits. I am not sure how it took the OP 35-40 though, probably lag or really bad aiming.
  19. Most AAA FPS games don't require a steep learning curve to start playing, but like most other games, you gonna need a hell of alot patience, TRAINING and SKILL, situational awareness etc to become real good and play with players on the same level. (not just common "KOS bandits"). I am bringing this up, because I have this gut feeling that you count among those who love to hate "twitch shooter", and would be outraged by my statement that they require TRAINING and SKILL. On that note, while DayZ melee system, requires a lot of training, to me it is nothing but artificially difficulty, mindless, twitch mechanic, that doesn't hold a candle to even most "arcadish" of games I have played.
  20. This suggestion boils down to: everything needs tweaking. Well DA! You know what it is, don't make it say it...

About base building and base raping.

I am not sure that 20-30m spawn radius will work for all building (or if large bases will be possible). Sounds like the mechanic that Rust use. So what if what if you are alerted to the presence of the base, it would be the same if you spawn in the middle of it, at least this way you'd have to come through the front door and deal with any locked doors etc. Giving the player a chance\warning. Because the ability to intentionally ghost into a corner of his base and promptly kill him is FAR worse problem, and without fixing it, there will be no real future for base building, IMO. Sound like a poor design, if the only way to maintain bases is by hiding them. You'll get many "smart" people using exploits to hide their bases behind private paywall or on low pop servers, ghosting to them so that other wont see them coming ... Which is why I'd hardly call the current mechanic as base building. Its more a tactical tool, that I doubt that wil be expanded much further without big changes.
  22. Actually DayZ is set in Chernarus, a fictional country from ARMA2. Where it is clearly stated that this is a post-soviet country, that gained independence in 1991 (e.g. like Ukraine) And while mother Russia in its delusions of grandre might mistakenly think that Chernarus is still part of it. I think that arm it might have some more pressing matters to deal with, you know like a zombie apocalypse..

    Private Shard Pricing is Outrageous

iirc the main thing about private shards is the ability to decide who can play. As for public servers, honestly I have no idea why would any one will be willing to pay. It should be BI priority to lower the prices, since public means they need to put up less servers, need to pay less for bandwidth, and they get free moderators that don't have any actual power.

    Anyone ever hunt rabbit?

On that note, does anyone know if the various animals has different spawning locations i.e. woods/fields/mountains or its random?
  25. Not before 2016. I hope it helps.
