I miss the global text chat channel that was in the MOD
Mor (DayZ) replied to bluesydave's topic in General Discussion
To sum it up. 'Global "magic" side chat' would be replaced with 'Global "radio" side chat'. So in order to communicate, you'll need to find a radio first, which will take extra inventory space and will require a batteries! You are correct that this is more realistic, but on the other hand realistically by making communication harder, i and many others will be using external TS. iirc one of the reasons for several channels, is that they wanted to tie it with map markers, which will give a benefit for those who use it over normal TS. The way to avoid abuse is by using mute, not by punishing everyone else. I usually don't play with people who don't have a headset. -
It is no more ridiculous than us being able to grow tomatoes, that normally take several month to grow, in less then ten minutes... The only stupid here, are those who are unable to grasp how mind numbing running hours at realistic speed is for most. Hence why we should wait for vehicles and balance accordingly, if vehicles are indeed extremely rare, then no changes should be made.

I don't understand this way of thinking. No one force you to participate in chat, and you can always turn it off. If you want to participate, then you can always use 'mute', which is a basic function anywhere. Also unless you are playing for PvP\KoS only, why would you play on a server with screaming 9 year olds? unless you enjoy coming to the forum afterwards, ranting about lack of social realism and such. What are their plans for this? -
FYI it is possible to do 80km with full gear in one day ;) Although I doubt that this is realistic for our survivors. Anyway, I said it before and I'll say it again. IMO until we get vehicles there should be no changes to this mechanic.

Private Shard Pricing is Outrageous
Mor (DayZ) replied to Weyland Yutani (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
I think you missed the point completely.. Like I said the fact that BIS are hosting many public servers is not not an accomplishment, it is a basic service expect from everyone who makes online games. Since Maintaining a large amount of servers is costly, like any good business they are likelly looking for way to reduce those cost. Public servers allow them to do that. Suckers who rent public servers pay BIS for the "privileged" (and get nothing), work as free moderators and reduce the amount of Public servers BIS need to maintain. It is a win win situation for BIS. On the other hand private serves not so much, since they do not provide service for the wider community. So yeah it is possible that BIS is intentionally charging too much for using the Hive, to "encourage" their suckers to stay with public or make few extra bucks of their backs if they don't. -
Private Shard Pricing is Outrageous
Mor (DayZ) replied to Weyland Yutani (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
According to him the price are much higher because (1) BIS is charging extra for hosting a private shard. (2) The shard hive is hosted on high-availability cluster/server, being backed up frequently and monitored accordingly. "High-availability" sound like a fancy talk for standard practice for real time gaming servers. Also the Hive is a basic DB, with minimal requirements compared to actual servers (no pathfinding etc) Also It has been a while since I played, but isn't those servers are reset on daily basis... so I am not sure how backup applies here. Can you tell how much it cost them? because it looks like you just pulling smoke out of your ***. If you want speculations. Then going by the info here, and the fact that in an MMO, where its online only, hosting public servers is a service that BIS is expected to provide, and that hosting cost are high. It is just plausible that they artificially inflated private servers cost, to give incentive for people to rent public servers, so they don't have to. -

20£ extra, for a locally run DB.. I am extremely doubtful. -
Do you believe that the vast majority of DayZ players care about "accurate representation of post-apocalyptic times" as oppose to enjoying a sandbox game in a zombie-apocalypse that is set in a new and exciting setting?
-
It is a good idea. But, this can be easily abused with the current mechanics. Right now I can draw streams of zombies into field and farm them... I think this should only implemented if zombies become more of a threat. A group of zombies, with only a few of them actually having anything of value will be nice.
-
I assume that the reason it works as it, is technical. Proper animations are very time consuming, so any design suggestion has to to account for flexibility. For example the current system allows them to place any weapon on your back and move it with character regardless of what he does or what he wears. In your case an mosin strapped on your shoulder would look nice when you stand, how would it look when you run, sprint? what about a shorter weapon or when you are using a melee for attacks ... the strap will likelly create clippings issues with different types of clothing, during animations etc.

^ Good post, although I'd replace every single instance of "this game" with "any MMO". Since this is common to any solid MMO, ESPECIALLY for sandbox pvp!

Official forums are generally filled with hardcore players, especially during development. There are some people here who put in ~1000 hours of gameplay... although the vast majority of people who played the mod and bought the game, are far far far more casual. Anyway, I suppose that they feel that by telling people how the game should be played, it will change something..
-
Its a nice idea, but how would it work? This might work, if we have some kind of in-game team management. Although if you care about realism such team management mechanics can be a project on its own e.g. how it would update between teams who are spread apart. How would this identification work i.e. how can one be "sort of looks like Paul"?
-
I think that NPC can be a valuable addition to certain Mods. On a basic level they can take the role of traders\guards in certain scenarios. They can also be used to set some basic scenarios on RP servers or if someone really goes overboard and attempt to build a more realistic case of post apocalyptic society.

My screen is blurry due to the fire I made :c
Mor (DayZ) replied to Faneto's topic in General Discussion
Every time your screen goes blurry it because you are low on health (black and white -> low on blood) It is your only in game indicator that you are low on health. Generally fighting when you are low on health(or blood) is inadvisable, since pretty much anything will cause you to die (or fall unconscious). So you should heal up. generally it is always good to be energized and hydrated, since it means that you are always healing. Changing graphical setting in general no. Changing a specific setting to by pass an ingame mechanic yes. -
I find this to be the most important part. Since without improving the current melee mechanics, I see no point in improving melee weapons. IMO the ability to push zombies back, and making him stumble/fall a time during which he is vulnerable, could be invaluable to improving cooperation among players.

Can no longer die of hunger?

The system is still there, but i believe that unlike before, it isn't being tested anymore in extreme conditions. -
Actually, this exactly how people act online in real life*. If someone interrupt you in the middle, you shoot him down; if someone is boring\annoying, you shoot him down; if you have a common language (goal) or the person is interesting you play along for the time being... Some times it feels that people expect the game should provide them with gaming companions (even female companions), even though in real life they can't small talk or maintain a conversation for a minute.

Private Shard Pricing is Outrageous
Mor (DayZ) replied to Weyland Yutani (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
To be fair, most of that cost is sever hosting and its not that much higher than ARMA2 servers. In fact none optimized servers in Alpha might be more resource consuming than those down the road. Regardless I still have no idea why would anyone ever rent a public server. yes, arrogant individuals who pertain to speak for the whole. -
Looks great, btw in real life you can take on far crazier tracks in a good modified jeep.

Private Shard Pricing is Outrageous
Mor (DayZ) replied to Weyland Yutani (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
There is nothing to agree to disagree about, your arguments pointless (since the ship has sailed) and silly (arguing against choice, just because). Here read this http://dayz.gamepedia.com/Servers#Types_of_Servers Regardless of your opinion, there will be ~three types of severs. Public servers - for the "unified experience" (only basic configuration can be changed like day/night cycle) Private servers - for the "unified experience" with "like minded" people. Private hives - for modding. So people can expand the base experience with other scenarios (e.g. locations, weapons etc). Every type of sever will have its own character. (I changed the names a bit) -
I agree, such systems are ultimately based on arbitrary rules that are easy to circumvent. IMO the only solution to encourage cooperation, is by improving zombies (as he suggested) I doubt that you'll see anything of the sort in the game. There are many issues with this. However, you can always use steam like many already do ...

Private Shard Pricing is Outrageous
Mor (DayZ) replied to Weyland Yutani (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
If the ARMA guys believed in that, we wouldn't have DayZ... MODing adds verity, allows customization and extends gameplay. While people who are opinionated about how others should or shouldn't play or enjoy are annoying as hell. This is here, is nothing but a subset of the good ol' 1st vs 3rd person. -

Does anyone dislike the "no military stuff" agrument?
Mor (DayZ) replied to stielhandgranate's topic in General Discussion
Authentic experience? hmm.. authenticity in DayZ, is about capturing the experience of survival in Zombie apocalypse. What that experience entails is different for everyone. So your statement is a bit vague. Especially since many people use "Authenticity" interchangeably with Realistic and Simulation, usually try to pass their personal preference in regard to gameplay. As far as I am concerned, none of the things I mentioned are bad. Any semblance of realism in those are meangless (and would ruin the game), what determines if it takes a a weak\day\hour to heal isn't realism but overall gameplay balance i.e. the developers try balance the different aspects of survival with what makes it fun. The reason it seams that way is because they started with a fully developed firearms mechanics. This is going to change the further we go as they finish with this and start working on other aspects. Already you get more none gun verity.
