Do NOT join servers at least until 3-5 min after a restart

This isn't the place to be knocking on your wood. What's wrong with people?? -
Nice response! I agree, it's mostly common sense. Tactics might work in the real world because for the majority of the time people don't want to die, and therefore your enemy will act in a cautious way to preserve their own life. However in DayZ a lot of players don't care if they live or die, and tactics fall a part pretty quickly when a dude in a t-shirt, jeans and a pick axe gets behind you.

Well done. It's a great feeling when you fall and you start shouting "Fuuuu" only to realise you're alive and have no broken legs.

Every Wednesday the servers are down for maintenance. It depends how exact an answer you want? I think the word maintenance is enough information for me, and on important update weeks you get a dev post about what has changed. But if you want to know exactly what happens I guess you need to ask the game developers and server hosts what they do each wednesday. Of course, they're not busy, so I'm sure they can give you an exact breakdown of what they do on Wednesdays, from what they had for breakfast to what porno site they viewed before bed.

how about the servers with 8 times more loot?

Hey, I'm down to join in on this. Could we sing "row row row your boat" around the camp fire? I really feel like DayZ staff should stop working on more guns and vehicles and add the things we really need to the game.. Like acoustic guitars, tambourines, humus, marshmallows (to attach to a stick and then cook on the camp fire), and add a feature where our hair grows the longer we're alive so those of us living in the forest around a camp fire can have beards and dirty long hair. Is that too much to ask? Also, the longer we don't carry a gun in game, the more health we gain from eating organic vegetables and weird ethnic food. -
You can do whatever the game allows you to do. There are plenty of MMO's out there that don't allow PVP, or have safe zones etc. DayZ is not one of those. Someone can decide to kill you, at any point, in any place, for any reason, and you have to start again. That is what makes DayZ a fun game to play. I also find the term kill on sight rather inaccurate and in some ways insulting to the killer. Your killer hasn't always just spotted you and killed you immediately. They probably saw you some distance away and made the effort to hunt you down, track your movements and get the perfect shot off at you. Maybe it was instant for you as you ran around unaware of others, but for your killer it was likely a prolonged and fun experience hunting you. Hunting and killing other players has the benefit of making your own death less annoying and feel more like a learning curve. If I get shot and killed out of the blue, after the initial cursing, I have respect for my killer. They got the drop me on me and deserved to be back at the coast in my t-shirt. My only real annoyance right now are the number of people that cry "hacker" all the damn time. I'm willing to bet the number of actual hackers in this game are a tiny minority. It seems like 99% of the so called "hackers" are just issues with the optimisation of the game and poor ping rates of either you or the other player. I was accused of being a hacker the other day because I was apparently glitching around, however to me the other guy had erratic movements. It's just the state of the game right now when people from across the world play together. In all honesty, not many people would have the time and knowledge to hack a game, and those that download hacks off the internet are probably so quickly riddled with spyware and malware that they're unable to play anymore.

We've all died from falling off things. I was stood on some rocks the other day, moved slightly and my leg was broken. Fortunately I had some supplies to make a splint, but still a little annoying. In my first few weeks I died all the time from falling off buildings. A funny thing happened the other day, I was playing on a 1st person server and was on the rocks overlooking the Novo tower and spotted a guy running around on the roof through the binoculars. I only had an SKS without a scope at the time, but since he was standing still I thought why not have a punt. I couldn't see him without the scope but aimed at the general area I thought he was, compensated for drop and fired off 5 rounds. Switched back to the binoculars to see the guy falling off the tower to his death. I found his corpse on the ground and he was pretty well geared with loads of ammo and an axe, so unlikely someone looking for a better spawn spot. I really can't think what happened. Unless my shots caused him to drop his rifle over the roof barrier, and he climbed over to pick it up and took one too many steps. Either way, rest in peace suicide guy.

Why does my screen flash a light shade of blue when getting shot at? (Not trolling, I'm legitimately curious)
lrp1984 replied to cheeseburger8's topic in New Player Discussion
I'm no expert but it sounds a lot like you're catching a glimpse of your Asphyx. If you can capture it and keep it locked up, you'll be immortal. Good luck. -
My first bit of advice if you want a more fun game is to stop going to NW airfield on low population servers to loot gear. If you're doing this with a friend you'll find yourself spending hours going between servers, running around the same area, being disappointed that you didn't find the magazine or AK you wanted, and then looking at the 60 second spawn/please wait message, as you try just one more server. Before you know it you've spent a whole night just to get camo gear and an AK/ammo each. Because you've repeated the same action over and over in a tedious and unfun way to get that gear you grow more attached to it, and therefore death is a bigger pain because you know you have to do the boring stuff again. The other downside of doing this is you look like a threat (even though you've got little actual combat experience from the low population servers), so 50% of people will KOS and the rest will run away at the first sight of you. You say you never see anyone, but I'm willing to bet plenty of people see you and your friend running around with assault rifles looking like bandits and take cover. The SKS is just as effective as any assault rifle and a lot easier to find, so stick to that.

The jail buildings are always good for weapons, ammo and marakov mags. There are a few of those buildings outside the main action areas.

@deadguy If Snipers are your biggest problem, then the best idea is to learn where Snipers make camp and how they behave. They need a place with a good line of sight over a broad area, usually a raised elevation and somewhere they are unlikely to be seen. Most will sit in third person, invisible to you behind something, scanning the area for movement before looking down the scope. Very few people would play as a Sniper in an area that doesn't get a lot of players passing through, because in all honestly, who wants to sit doing nothing, slowly freezing and starving to death for several hours at a time without ever seeing a player. If you go to NW airfield or any other military area that drops good loot, on a server that has even 1 other player on it, go in thinking that guy's a sniper waiting to kill you. Don't just watch the buildings and towers, as most clever snipers are hiding in the tree line. Don't stand still in the open, duck and dive, keep moving and take cover if you hear a shot, as it's likely at you. Snipers are not a threat if you're clever about it. Avoid being seen by Zombies in these area, as some snipers will sit and watch the zombies, because the zed will stand still until it spots a player, and then run at the player. You will then stand more or less still as you kill the zombie, making you a very easy target to both locate and hit. Good luck!

The mantra for the rest of us. If you are hungry, then I'll hear you eating and get my gun ready If you are thirsty, then I'll hear you cracking open a Pipsi, and I'll get my gun ready If you are cold, you'll take less shots to kill If you are in need, ask, and I'll shoot you If you are in trouble, it's because I found you I do these things to be rewarded with your stuff I do these things for fear you'll do the same to me first, I don't care about what's right or wrong, I set my own standards, and they keep me alive for longer

I guess this could be an issue for US servers. I've found little problem gearing up on European servers. As someone else stated I normally gear up on a low population server and then move over to a high population server to track down players. However I do sometimes gear up on a high population server for the thrill. I've not died to anything other than the character wipe bug for over a month now, and when you die to a bug, I don't see any issue with exploiting the servers to re-gear up. The main issue for me that makes me server hop is that I pretty much always play with someone else, so if we die, it's easier to meet back up on a low population server and get ourselves fed and watered. If they add a feature that you can group yourself with other players so if you die within an hour of each other you'll both spawn at the same spot, that'd make things a lot easier. It's funny when I started playing I'd be lost all the time, using a compass and the dayz sa map to navigate. Now within a minute of spawning I know where I am and what direction to head in.

If he was in the bunk rooms, they only have the one exit. The better idea would have been to sneak up unseen and wait by the door with your axe. As soon as he came out slug him over the head a couple times with the axe and you've got yourself a mosin and whatever else he had that you didnt ruin with the axe. At close range you'll likely kill with an axe quicker than he can spin round and shoot you.

Yeah, and I always KOS any goat I see wearing a clown mask.

Yeah, the Welsh and New Zealand players keep campaigning for Sheep to be added to the game..

I ran google translate on this and it came out as, "Boy, you've got a pretty mouth." -
Hey, I've spent some time in the kind of Eastern European countries this game is set. A rusted or burnt out car isn't that uncommon a sight in a village right now, let along after a zombie apocalypse. I once saw a rusted up old car attached to a pair of donkeys and being pulled along like some kind of wagon. It turned out that was the mobile fast food truck too. It funny, for me, and I think a lot of the players, the zombies are the worst part of the game and it'd be more fun without them!

Is it considered bad form to server hop at military areas?
lrp1984 replied to zombieland78's topic in New Player Discussion
I usually play on a few differents servers a night, however not to loot, more due to them going down all the time, or being full/empty etc. I prefer high population servers as more excitement. My friend and I logged onto a Scottish server last night and as our previous server had restarted we found ourself logging in to a field between Svet and Turovo only to be getting shot at as we loaded up. My friend dropped unconscious almost immediately as he took a couple shots. I went prone, located the first attacker and unloaded 10 sks rounds, however he was glitching around so I only managed to break his legs and he was trying to crawl away. Quickly switched to the magnum for a quick head-shot execution of first attacker whilst taking fire from guy number two. I then got to cover in some trees to reload, only for the second guy to run right past me. I ran right behind him for almost 30 seconds whilst he was presumably searching for me. It pays to look behind you sometimes. When he did finally stop to look around he had 10 shots pumped into him. Then my friend woke up, we molested the corpses, and went on our merry way. Anyway, this got me thinking about the whole KOS thing. Those two guys had a clear advantage, had seen us first, had shot first, we were stood upright in a field for a few seconds as we logged in and of course had no weapon equipped right away . They should have killed us. So I was thinking to myself, what would I have done in their shoes? Would I have tried to kill on sight too, and would I have ended up dead as well? Probably not to be honest, but I've no real idea. It has certainly got me thinking a little more before I shoot, and the main thing is, if you're going to shoot at someone, you need to be 100% positive they're going to die. Taking wild shots from a distance without a scope is a sure fire way to end up dead yourself. -
Anyone else lost their characher past 24hours?
lrp1984 replied to kimmaz's topic in General Discussion
I lost my character twice last week at what I thought was a server restart. It seems to happen if you log onto a server too quickly after it restarts. I always leave it a while now. -
Yeah blud, I hear ya. I wuz like chillin with me homies wen sum punkass muthaf$%ker comes creepin' up me and is like bam, shoot, n ou is dead now. I wuz like, no way is dis cracker gunna killz me. my homes got a defrib me on me ass and I was like, boom, i is alive now and I is lookin to get me some revenge like the crow. so i tracks down the muthaf$$"r and gets me farmin ho out and ruins his head, innit. peace.

To be honest, he/she has probably already forgotten about you. I killed a player for the sole purpose of looting his gear last night and his corpse glitched and I couldn't get any of his stuff. Now that was an upsetting time, not only did the guy die, and he must have put a fair few hours in to getting his gear, but I didn't get to keep his things. That's a real game tragedy,

KOS is not part of the problem, it's a part of the game. Like others have stated, this is a survival game, and that's how you survive. New spawns can be more dangerous than anyone else, as they have a lot to gain and very little to lose. If they have any melee weapon in their back, they're a danger to your survival. If they're wearing jeans and a jacket, they're a danger, because they've got at least 6 slots you can't see, enough to be hiding a kitchen knife. I don't like being stabbed. If I try to talk to them, and tell them to stay away, and they don't reply, or come closer, I'll shoot them in the head. If I need to loot a town and don't wish to share or have to watch over my shoulder the whole time, I'll kill them.

To be honest this is an open sandbox game. There is no right or wrong way to play the game. Sometimes I will kill on sight, sometimes I won't, it really depends on my mood. I won't play a game where I need to avoid certain areas to keep some gear that I can get back with a little work. The first few hours after spawning are normally the most fun, and to be honest I now prefer to have a magnum and sks rather than an AK or M4. since you don't need clips and if you can't kill someone with those 10 or 5 shots then you're doing something wrong. I once had a player shoot his shotgun at me, only to miss, and then beg for me to not kill him as he'd used his last bullets. I didn't kill him, however I did cuff him, break his legs (and then bandage as I didn't want him to bleed out), put a sack on his head and strip him, then take everything he had that might help him recover, and left him crawling aimlessly towards a town. I do normally try and engage in voice chat with those I encounter. No response and I'll normally kill. If you try to speak to someone and they don't reply they're likely up to no good, or don't speak English, which are both good reasons to kill. At the end of the day, this game has little to no actual content beyond a few zombies running around and a need to eat, drink and keep warm. If as a friendly player your only threat was from those Zombies then this game would be utterly boring and completely pointless, and certainly wouldn't have attracted so many buyers in Alpha. The fear you have of being sniped, axed to death, or caught by a lunatic that wants to hobble and molest you is what makes this game interesting, and is likely what makes your role-play more interesting. If there was a server where PvP was turned off would you still creep around in cities and avoid dangerous areas? No, you would run around freely and within a few days be bored. The chance of being killed at any moment and starting again is the only thing that makes this game playable right now. Dayz needs the Bandits and the Psychopaths, and knowing they're out there makes this game interesting and for that matter, realistic, for everyone.

Stuck in please wait screen resulting in spawning without clothes
lrp1984 replied to JelleDRC (DayZ)'s topic in Troubleshooting
Yeah, that is actually a really good spawn spot if you want to gear up quickly since as mentioned you're right next to NW Airfield and the Army base south of it. Vybor also has a couple piano buildings and houses to get fed and some basic stuff. Only downside is spawning in your under pants.
