We NEED some way to identify heros and bandits.

Here's a counter-argument that will blow the OP's world: In dayz mod, I was once shot at by a hero when I was skinned as a civilian and did not even have my gun pointed at him. Sorry bud, skins are redundant. Everyone is still KoS, hero skin or not.

Why DayZ is no survival game

I will provide you with a story from one of my most memorable dayz mod experiences. Back in the mod days, there was many patches that tinkered with the difficulty of surviving. At one point food was so scarce in the building loot tables that you were better off killing zombies for a chance at finding some (5-10% drop rate it felt like). This was awesome. It caused people to be very noisy, which was risky as you would draw increased attention by both zombies and players alike. During a different, seperate patch, I remember zombies were extremely aware and aggressive, and could see almost a mile away, and hear you from quite far as well. It was probably overkill for zombies to have that good of senses, but it was the only way they were an actual threat since we could not just have more zombies as that would lower server performance and FPS would suffer. Combining both these aspects would make a harsh environment to survive in, and in my opinion would be a lot of fun. If they could just add 100x more zombies, that would be even better, but might not be possible due to performance issues. Just my thoughts on the matter. Cheers.
  3. Lie? Who needs to do that? I've been shot on sight by a hero-skinned player in DayZ mod when I was skinned as a civilian. Haven't trusted a soul since then (and before then I was still extremely skeptical).

    The antihop/exiting timers..

For one, learn punctuation. Second, and huge pro tip, log out in bushes in forests. Logging in houses/villages and complaining about getting merc'd on logout/login? It's going to happen more bud. A lot more.
  5. I came back to the mod for about 30 mins the other day, and the first 25 were pretty fun, the last 5 I saw a huge serverwide/global hack message popup and then I logged immediately. Yep, I can def remember the things I did not miss, lol.
  6. 99% positive it is the amount of individual sound sources that a sound can play from. Ex- 32 sound sources = you can hear 1 player shooting and 31 zombies simultaneously. I have seen this setting in other games before such as diablo, that have numerous monsters on screen and thus many sources sounds can be produced by.

    Increased Time Between Updates

Dean has already stated he has hired more staff for the project. It takes time to train people. I wish people would relax instead of creating new threads every time the game goes without a patch for *gasp* an entire week. I almost regret Dean's decision for him, for releasing an Alpha to the most impatient community of all: The interwebs. It's going to be okay, friend. B) Greatness comes in time.
  8. The whole purpose of alpha is to add new content/features. The purpose of beta is to fix the bugs that are associated with such new features. Fortunately we are getting both at the same time since the programmers still need something to do while new features and content are added. If anyone else wants to whine about the developers adding more content while there are still major bugs and issues with the current release, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_release_life_cycle to be enlightened on how the software development cycle works. And I quote: "Beta, named after the second letter of the Greek alphabet, is the software development phase following alpha. It generally begins when the software is feature complete." If you don't like being a part of the software-testing phase, I suggest playing DayZ mod, which is a lot more stable at this point in time. There are still tons of people playing it. Cheers.
  9. Are you sure Arma did this as well? I played DayZ mod with a friend on the same LAN and we never had to enter any -port startup parameters, it just simply worked. edit: After reading it again, perhaps the issue lies with the OP's NAT firewall, and maybe my router just did not have one enabled. Also, I hate to be nit picky but saying NAT translation is like saying NIC card (network interface card card). :P I imagine you said it just so buddy knew what you were talking about. Being in the IT profession myself, there are too many acronyms, haha. Anyways, good work. I personally had no idea what the cause was.

    Experimental Build Code

My guess is the experimental build is only available for closed in-house testing. Correct me if I am wrong though, as I have not found a way to access the experimental build myself.

    Rolling Update Rev. 0.30.114008

I'm not a moderator, but even I can state that this is getting out of hand. Let's not derail the thread with anymore flaming. Get back on topic to feedback for the patch in question (0.30.114008). On that note, I've only "rubberbanded" for the first few times after a fix was put in place for it. Confusing, I know.

    Rolling Update Rev. 0.30.114008

I haven't seen any updates over weekends for standalone before, so it is pretty unlikely (sadly). Devs need breaks too though, so no complaints here. Can only expect a huge update next time, since its been a bit since the last update. Aw yeah.

    Warning to Chernarus swimmers.

Cool story, bro. Actually though. Thanks for sharing. I'll have to be careful / kind of want to experiment myself now. I find myself diving off piers now and then for shits and gigs.

For those complaining about development pace

TBH I thought development pace was pretty fast. A patch on a daily or bi / tri-daily basis? Win. I've played many a beta's in my day (and only one alpha, ze arma 3) and this is pretty speedy gonzalas. I like.

    I really detest spawn killers

Bee-line to the the forest and problem solved. I haven't been spawn killed since DayZ mod if I recall correctly.

    Rolling Update Rev. 0.30.114008

Welcome to alpha. If you were expecting a fully playable game, the door is that way. I suggest playing DayZmod if you are looking for a more enjoyable experience and do not wish to be a part of the videogame development/testing process. I'm not trying to be rude, just trying to point out the obvious. Note all the warning signs saying it's alpha and to expect a TON of gameplay-breaking issues. You act surprised.

    Bad looking Grass and trees

Yeah resolution and I bet Antialiasing would make the biggest difference. Antialiasing turned up would help smooth the jaggies alot. Also in rendering, the "alpha to coverage" setting makes a large difference on grass/bushes/tree graphics, I'd max that out as well if you have a beast computer.

    Graphic recommendations

Disabling Ambient Occlusion gave me +20 FPS. Other taxing settings are Postprocessing, HDR, shadows, Antialiasing and objects, I believe. I get decent 40-60 frames or so with my setup I think. Running on medium~ish settings at the moment, some things off, some very low, some high/very high. core i7 2600k gtx 570 sc 16 gb ram 256 gb ssd harddrive win7 ultimate 64-bit I also put in Arma2 startup parameter settings in steam for DayZ SA, though I'm not sure if they actually work or not lol.

    Bad looking Grass and trees

It's hard to determine what exactly your experiencing without a screenshot. Alt+printscreen, then paste into MS Paint and throw us a screenshot so we can try to help ya out. It should work on a laptop too. edit: Yeah like colekern said, you can also use F12 to take a steam-games screenshot and post it that was as well. Good call.

    Rolling Update Rev. 0.30.114008

No idea how everyone else rubberbands so much, I've yet to rubberband since day one release, though I've only put in about 10 hours. Right now my biggest concern is the horrifying "loot only spawns on server restart" deal, which I do realize is an issue with optimization. It's basically keeping me from playing the game at all. Not to mention watching the playerbases on servers jump around like a kid with adhd on a trampoline, since everyone is server hopping to find military loot 24/8. :( Once the loot system is fixed ala DayZmod, I'll start playing again. I have pretty good performance on my 2 or 3 year old computer on DayZmod.. so I can't see loot spawning being a huge optimization problem, more like people needing to buy a half-decent computer lol. Besides all that, keep up the good work. Looking ever so forward to loot spawn changes in the future.

This server hopper is so crazy and blind

So a guy ran past you without seeing you, then you stalked and killed him. Congrats.. You outplayed him. No need to make a thread to hate on him. Did DayZ forums hit CoD levels now or what. And what even makes him a server hopper, lol. The fact he was an unskilled player lacking awareness and had good gear? No clear evidence, other than the fact that in the current state of the game, M4's are only in the hands of server hoppers for the most part lol. I think anyone playing this game for a single day would have an experience like this lol. Maybe you shoulda posted in the new players forum and left the server hopper part out. BTW, I'm not even trying to be a jerk, but it's a pretty generic story with hate on someone you outplayed, lol. No need to be overly smug
  23. I can definitely agree with this. Especially combined with the fact they completely removed the only hard-counter to heli's: armor-penetrating sniper rifles. IMO heli's have no place in the game if there is no (very rare) direct counter to them. Heli's are the no.1 most imbalanced piece of content in DayZ, imo.

    DayZ On Sale?

I imagine it will follow the same pricing scheme as Arma3 (though don't quote me on this). That would be: Alpha: $30.00 Beta: $45.00 Full release: $60.00 And possible sales after full release, probably not within the first 2 months though. In short, buy now to save monies.
  25. Having both played on servers that had tons of vehicles (100+) to some that had barely any, I can safely say that ones with more vehicles were alot more fun. They didn't really break the balance of the game as they well extremely risky and produced tons of noise, causing the player to draw tons of attention from both players and zombies. They also didn't break immersion due to the fact that in a real world apocalypse-type scenario, there would be abandoned vehicles in both working/broken condition -everywhere-. Ever drive to NWAF? You might want to hop out and go on foot before you actually get there or you will run into "problems". Large numbers of vehicles do not upset balance in any way and add alot more enjoyment to a server, IMO. (Note the IMO here). In regards to the topic itself, chernarus is huge and vehicles help the monotony of running around for hours on end. Only Lingor felt "smaller" with tons of vehicles, and I only say smaller because at no point did it feel small entirely, unless you had a helicopter, I suppose.
