  1. "point of adding in other weapons" 1. Realism 2. Other weapons are more accurate / fire faster / are more reliable / are more durable / are more easily found / niche ammunition / have larger magazines. i.e. weapon differences. 3. Variety is the spice of life "devs have already discussed this" Link / source? Haven't seen this. "rule out every other weapon as useless" Obviously not. Min-maxers will get more out of other weapons, survivors will find others more durable and easier to find, etc. "use every type of ammunition except..." And 9 x 39 mm SP-5, and 5.45mm, and... I can go on. There is a lot of ammunition planned to be added that it won't be able to chamber, so given what it looks like -right now- it will at best chamber half, if not a third of ammo types. - also even if the customization is turned down, would you be opposed to just a semi-auto AR-15 in 5.56 NATO? Asking your opinion seeing how we have the SKS and AK but no semi-auto companion to the M4, so if nothing else there's that bit I can see. (and again, realism I can push here.)
  2. Weapon balance or weapon variety? On weapon balance I highly disagree - it would hardly be unbalanced in comparison to many of the other guns. It's not like it fires faster or does more damage, now does it? Also keep in mind most would be direct impingement - known for being higher maintenance and less durable than the AK and SKS. When (i hope when and not if on basis of realism) guns spawn with at least one magazine, it won't matter much on that point either - not to mention you need a different magazine for each of the four ammo types I listed. weapon variety, perhaps to a degree, but honestly I don't see it being that much more than the present rush 2 grab M4 in the case of PvP players. Survivors on the other hand take whatever they can get, sure the AR-15 is probably more suited for such players, but it's no different from whenever said survivor finds an SKS or Mosin. Since the AR fires as fast as the SKS in semi, and the only way you'd get a full auto lower is if you find an M4 anyhow. In comparison. the SKS offers the same fire rate, same top damage with a 20 inch barrel, (AR-15 24 inch barrels would give a slight accuracy advantage) and would be more reliable, and a Mosin would be more accurate, have higher damage, and again have higher durability. A sporter 22 would have more common magazines, and again, higher reliability. We can go down the list, but the AR-15 would be by no means the end-all of things to grab. The only thing that it would be is something for end-game PvPers to hunt down parts for in order to customize their gun a bit more for their playstyle - hunting down that 24 inch barrel to use as a faster firing DMR or that 8 inch barrel to give a stronger short range punch than an MP5 at the cost of insane recoil / dispersion with rifle cartridges. And as things go, carrying multiple upper receivers would take up most of your inventory space. I'd say an 8 inch length upper would take up 2x3 or 2x4 inventory slots, and it would only get worse from there for the longer barrels. So realistically a survivor might be carrying two different rifle uppers. (which would still take up a considerable amount of storage space)
  3. Well it is, but both countries see high adaptation of the weapon. Also, good point on the lower... so yeah. Just semi / auto lower. Well it wouldn't be an M4 simulator by any means, obviously not everyone would like the AR-15 platform, and they would hardly be the only rifles available. Or the most common - I'd think they'd be slightly less common than an SKS for the common populace given geography.
  4. My suggestion is the Armalite AR-15 platform - with emphasis on the civilian / law enforcement semi-automatic variants. http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/204058-ar-15-semi-automatic-rifle/ Designed in the USA and first seeing action in Vietnam, the AR-15 was later used as the basis for many countries' rifles, from the American M16 and M4, to the H&K 416, the platform is seen widely as the rival to the Russian AK series across the world. Semi-automatic variants are available in most countries, and are extremely popular for sporting, hunting, and law enforcement use. Among the greatest strengths of the platform are it's modularity - the rifle can be configured as a pistol, carbine, or rifle, and chambered in anything from a .22 LR round, to the NATO standard 5.56, and even the AK's own ammunition - the 7.62 x39mm round. On account of this, and the global availability of both commercial and military parts, it is widely considered a great rifle for 'preppers' as if the end of the world were to come, the AR-15 gives the flexibility needed to adapt to most any scenario.
  5. Coming to this game, and doing what research I can about the lore (what little there is) and taking a look at the suggested weapons, I find myself rather surprised that there is a complete absence of any semi-automatic variants of this platform in game. To my understanding, the region of Chernarus is meant to be at least loosely based off of Czechoslovakia - So it is there I will begin my reasoning for many of the following points. Of all European states, Czechoslovakia may have the greatest number of civilian owned AR-15 rifles, reason alone for consideration, but not the only point. Czechoslovakia also has a local weapon manufacturer for the AR-15 series, via Luvo Prague, though there is also a large presence of H&K and Sig Sauer product as well. Even outside of this, since the fall of the soviet union, the AR-15 platform has quickly been taken up by a sport rifle among many former soviet republics. Though while not as prominent as more traditional rifles, the AR-15 still nevertheless is popular. There are of course reasons for this, not lest of which is the customization the platform provides. Lower receiver, upper receiver, stock, handguard, pistol grip, and more are interchangeable - with various rifle cartridges available for use without changing the whole rifle. These properties make it largely considered among the best - if not -THE- best for a post civilization/apocalypse/zombie scenario, in which you never know what type of ammo you may find commonly, or what parts you may find. I would propose the AR-15, and the M4 as an extension, be broken down into the following as a fully modular system: lower receiver (gives the name of the gun and differentiates between pistol, rifle, and M4/rifle auto) Upper receiver (designates the ammunition fired, accuracy, and durability.) The above two would be crafted together to make the firearm in question, and could be broken down afterward. Grip (different types of pistol grips with varied ergonomics - small accuracy difference) stock (different types, some easier to carry, some more accurate, some have storage.) Scope/sight handguard -with rail assembly: Left rail right rail lower rail 1 (secondary vertical grip, bipod, vertical grip w/ internal bipod, lower rail 2 while I would assume most of the calibers for the gun would be irreverent, I would still like to see 9mm pistol .22 LR 5.56 NATO 7.62 x 39mm as ammo types (each with their own magazines, in various sizes) upper receivers would have different barrel lengths: 8in (pistol) 12 in (M4/carbine/SBR) 16 in 20 in 24 in And then offer a gas system: either direct impingement or piston. (this could be a separate component, requiring the rifle to be fired in bolt action without.) while it is a lot of work, I see it as an addition for realism, and a way to drastically increase the ability to customize an individual's character via the rifle. It may not be something for the short term, but even if the realistic customization is not included, it still is a common sporting and law enforcement rifle that I feel should have a place in the game.
