So I guess we should agree on the scale being the most plausible of the three to be used effectively in this scenario? Anyhow, so long as later on characters are slowed by weight (which I'm sure they will be) then I doubt we'd see many people with cast iron riot shields. I can see them being used as a replacement for a ballistic plate in a plate carrier, but outside of that they're just to heavy to be carried for an extended period of time in an arm. And even on the chest they would slow you down. Regardless, sheet metal from car doors is probably our best bet for sheet metal as well, now that I think about things. It would use pre-existing art assets, require a tool to collect, and historically they could stop handgun bullets - the .357 magnum round was adopted by the FBI due to gangsters defeating police pistols with nothing but a car door as cover or a thick silk vest as armor.

I'd say they're easier to make than chain given the setting, simply due to the fact that ring and scale mail are less time consuming to make, not for how complicated of a process they are. As for ballistic protection, actually they would give some, albeit minimal. Scale being superior to chain in this simply due to the size of bullets, though at best it would protect against .22LR rounds. At the same time, 10-20 layers of cotton can also stop a .22LR round, depending on range and gun in question, so... yeah. As far as the crafted armor is concerned, they shouldn't take up more than 1-3 additional loot spawns. (nails [which will probably be added by barricading anyhow], sheet metal [which could be used for craftable weapons and could be limited to using a tool to collect anyhow.], sports equipment (if that's a thing.), and [maybe] shower curtain rings if they wanted to run with the ringmail idea.) With that said, once we see greater numbers of zombies later on, and ammo is more scarce, then armor of some sort will become more important for some playstyles, as well as those caught off guard.

Yeah, kinda why I suggested ringmail or scalemail instead. They're both a hell of a lot easier to make and more suitable against the threats in game. Heck, we could make Chinese-style paper scalemail from books and it would be somewhat bulletproof. As for deer pelts - raw hide armor is something which existed for a good bit of history. It's generally better than no armor at all, though you're not getting more than a shirt out of a single deer. Though it makes a fair base for turning it into studded / ring / scalemail, depending on material availability.

So sorry for the double-post, but I'm noticing the poll votes for "no, I don't want any of this to be in-game." yet there hasn't been a single comment yet as to why any of those people wouldn't want to be able to craft armor.
  5. I would like aftermarket attachments, would be nice. Now if only we could find sporter 22 mags somewhere not a military base.

I've not worked with it, but I've had a friend make me a chain shirt, plus I watch a lot of documentaries. To simply one website: "Chainmail was the earliest form of metal armour and was probably invented before the 5th century by the ancient Celts. The name mail comes from the French word "maille" which is derived from the Latin "macula" meaning "mesh of a net". The armour itself involved the linking of iron or steel rings, the ends of which were either pressed together, welded or riveted." http://www.medievaltymes.com/courtyard/chainmaille_history.htm Keeping in mind most quality pieces of armor which held up for more than one battle i.e. held up against actual combat, were of the welded or riveted variety. Here is an example of 15th century riveted chainmail: and a 17th century example: Regardless, Ring and possibly scale armor would be easier to make in a post-apocalyptic setting.

Early chainmail was riveted. More modern versions like sharkmail are welded. That is how the chains stay together from repeated attacks and lasted for more than just one battle, which is why just twisting the wires together isn't as effective - it's going to just fall apart after repeated attacks. generally speaking, what you are suggesting is analogues to stage chainmail.
  9. Not confused - I just find lying to be annoying at best, abhorrent at worst. I have innate tendency to trust a person's word until they prove they cannot be trusted. It's the type of person I am - I believe in the positive potential of humanity. Call me an idealist, but if it's not acted upon, even in but small ways, then yeah humanity is fucked to be trapped in their negative outlooks.

Ballistic Vest - What Should It Do?

Umm, not really. If ammo / guns are rarer in the first place, then that should be that much easier. Empty magazines -should- be more common than guns, not the other way around. And given storage space early on in the game, you are going to be forced to manage your storage all that much more, when finding mags. Take that second mag or the water bottle instead? And the like.

If we're talking "real" chainmail, with the full protection of such a set, yes, you need to have each ring be welded or riveted. Sure, you can make a look-alike set with what you suggested, however it will not be as effective as real chainmail. 2. Fair enough. 3. Well that's not that hard, quarter inch steel will do that. Or a cast iron stove door. Just saying.
  12. Alignment-wise I'm chaotic good. I help out absolutely everyone I can. (neutral medic means I don't take sides in conflicts, nor do I consider myself a "hero") I don't care if you're the scum of the earth or an angel, if I run into you, i'll offer to give you help, whether it be simple supplies or running an IV for you or the like. As for why have a weapon? I'm not a pacifist, I return fire if fired upon, however I do not take the first shot, unless I'm playing with friends and need to cover them for one reason or another. (in which case it's covering / suppressing fire.)
  13. Not really, DayZ doesn't simulate the lack of social interaction, a need for pretty much every human save for sociopaths. In which case, sociopaths would likely be the ones killing on sight as loners, whereas most other humans would band into groups, based on regional area, likemindedness, or by taking in new members through various methods into a non-xenophobic group. The videogame medium also takes away the 'realism' factor and the long-term consequences, so there isn't a feeling of the other person is another human being trying to stay alive - at least not to the same degree. Anyhow.

    Am I the only one...

I vote for a live recording session with multiple mics at various distances for a mosin. Let's go for outright realism, in my opinion. Otherwise, I haven't heard the old sound, so I can't have an opinion one way or another, as to the other choices.

Ballistic Vest - What Should It Do?

See I like the sporter since it's silent and has high capacity mags, and honestly I'd like to use the thing until I find an AK or the like.

Ringmail yes, chainmail (if you're trying to make real chainmail) notsomuch. You have to weld together each of the thousands of individual rings and intertwine them if we're talking chainmail. A master smith takes weeks to finish a single set, so... yeah. Not so easy in the environment we're talking about. But ringmail is simple and could be made simply. You could probably take steel shower rings or something and stick them in a shirt of some sort.
  17. Yeah this was the second person who has shot to kill me. But nah, I'll still be me, i.e. friendly and helpful. Just have issue with people lying.

    LOL. Just lol.
  19. Honestly, I wouldn't have minded to have been KoS'd. I wouldn't have minded if he had left me for dead. What annoys me are two things: lying about being friendly, then laughing and shooting in my head after I was already no longer a threat and therefore killing me simply for the sake of killing me.
  20. No, it was on the road from Berezino to Svetlojarsk.
  21. by "closer" the distance I moved was less than a foot before he opened up fire. We were both in the open so.. yeah. And we were fairly far apart - and he did sound quiet on the mic, so.. yeah I figured the request was legit.

sawn off .22 sporter poll ...should we be able to

Bingo. As far as it goes, sure it would be weaker than it already is, but as far as holdout weapons go, it's not that bad of a choice. Honestly, you should be able to saw off most any gun that is not piston or impingement driven, knowing that you lose performance for that smaller size. But it gives more purpose to weapons like the .22 which are otherwise passed over. Now if only we can have .22 mags spawn in civilian locations..

any point in having a sidearm?

    I haven't heard that personally.
  24. Evaris

any point in having a sidearm?

I disagree, in my opinion if you're lacking an AKM, then if you can find a MP5k or Sawed-off shotty, then those are good options while indoors. The FNX45 is also not a bad choice in those situations as well, if only because it has a larger magazine than most other options you're looking at, bar a sporter-22. (which pretty much no one uses.
