What has been your biggest "I'm done" moment?
Mookie (original) replied to aquamonkey's topic in General Discussion
Aside from the glitches we all experience (put M4 down on floor, M4 vanishes, the falling through the floor bug, etc), my "I'm done [until Beta]" moment will probably be when my current char dies. I've had him since the start of the 0.49 wipe - three and a half months ago. He's pretty much as geared up as any player has ever been, and it's been damn hard work, scavenging, fighting, trading, and running. Jesus H Corbett, the running. We're talking thousands of miles here. It doesn't really matter how he dies, though I'd rather not lose him to a wipe. I think at that point it would just be psychologically good for me to give the game a rest tbh. -

OK, so it looks like we're back to the loot spawning, but not the visible crash, on persistent servers. Meanwhile, on non-persistent, things are as they should be and crashes are visible. This is the same effectively as 0.51. Clearly this is all pretty broken (as evidence by the tales of ten crash sites on a single non-persistent server, and of multiple helis spawning on top of each other), but obviously won't be a priority for a fix.
-
I have to plead a bit guilty to rumour-starting here, as I saw a video of players trying out suppressors in 0.52, and one of them had an RIS/bipod on his M4. I'm still not sure how that could have happened given that bipods were deleted in (?) 0.48, and everything was wiped in 0.49... Anyhoo, I've yet to see one. At least (functioning) suppressors were a nice comeback.

CARNAGE. -
Isn't it about time you listed me in your "trusted traders" signature George? :P

I experienced this for the first time last night on an entirely empty server (well, when I joined there were another three or four on it, but they all left and the noises continued). I've never eaten human meat, or had anything to do with cannibalism. Really hope this doesn't mean I'm stuck with making this sound for ever... And, yes, the explosions happen because if some blows up a petrol station it will blow again when ever someone else joins (and perhaps leaves) the server.
-
Recent experience tells me you may be right. There do seem to be cumulative effects of the persistence mechanism involved. Agree with you about the AUG btw.
-
This seems to have become far worse since 0.52. Every other server I go on kicks me after a minute or two. And, yes, I know there's a way of complaining about it, but it's so frequent now, and the complaint mechanism so clunky, that this seems almost academic.

Ybor Battalion server auto kicks when you join
Mookie (original) replied to cheranuscrusiser's topic in General Discussion
A very large number of servers are kicking at the moment IME. Probably happened to me 15 times today. I think it's because people can't be arsed to pay for private/whitelisted, so just abuse their admin privileges. -
I've given away a lot of gear lately (and have managed to lose a fair bit too). Remaining trade items: PSO-1 scope (P) Blackskull balaclava (P) FNX 15 rnd mag (full) P FNX MRDS sight (P) M4 Handrail optics (P) M4 plastic handguard (P) x2 M4 RIS handguard (P) Mosin comp (P) Looking for: Nothing really. Happy to give any of the above away to those I know and trust. Thanks

How to avoid character resets and death while logging off
Mookie (original) posted a topic in General Discussion
Threads on this seem to descend quite quickly into flamewars a lot, so perhaps helpful if we pool our practical knowledge about avoiding these phenomena. I'm lumping them together because sometimes people are killed in the 30secs after logging, and therefore confuse the two. I've somehow managed to avoid being reset or experiencing a logout death since the 0.49 wipe. This is probably quite a lot of luck, combined with some practical lessons. For what it's worth, this advice is aimed at all players, so if you're experienced and know it all already, please accept my apologies. Similarly, if I'm wrong about anything, or if you disagree, please feel free to correct me. First: avoiding death while logging: 1. As a rule, try not to log out in or near a building, unless you are an uber-exploiting, ghosting PvPer. If you are logging back into a high pop server you will simply increase the chances of happening across another player who, startled at what s/he will see as your ghosting, will kill you. Similarly, Zs tend to be around buildings. Some players trust that closing doors behind them will rule out being bounced by a Z, but my faith in that isn't as strong as it could be just yet. Similarly, if you log out on an upper floor, you could find yourself stuck in the basement of the building when you log back in... 2. The best places to log out are in fir trees in the woods or behind bushes. Stay in game for at least a minute or two before you actually log out, in case you have been seen by a Z from a distance. Second avoiding resets: 1. Let's get the obvious out of the way - you may have logged in to an experimental/first person server, which is a different hive and on which you will therefore start as a freshie. No problem. Just log back into to a third person server. 2. Some servers experience temporary, or longer-term disconnects with the main database/hive. If you're logging into a regular, third person server and experience this, hit escape as quickly as possible, in case the server manages to re-establish its connection with the public hive, and (unhelpfully) overwrites your character. Don't feel tempted to have a little splash about in the breaking surf, unless you actually want your heavily geared char to be dumped... 3. Some servers do not manage to make this connection with the main hive for several minutes after they restart. If you see a server at 9:01, or 12.02 or similar, think twice about connecting to it. Five or ten minutes past its restart clock time is usually ok. 4. Again, in this case it's possible that if you get back out quickly enough, your character will not be overwritten, and that if you go back into a different server, all will be well. But there is a lot of luck involved in this. 5. You can have a server in your favourites list and have used it many times in the past. That does not mean that it won't experience a problem, so don't assume that it's going to work for all time, or that if you log into it as a freshie, your character is gone for ever. If you're unlucky, you can log in repeatedly to servers which show you as a fresh spawn. That doesn't necessarily mean that your character is gone. I think my record (in 0.50) was eight different servers, all showing me as a bambi. I kept the faith (because they were showing me at different spawn points), and on the ninth, there was my guy in his Gorka-clad glory. 5. Reset problems seem more common after new patches, perhaps as servers are updated, etc. You may want to bear this in mind. Anyway, hope this saves some lives and sorry about the wall of text. -

Have you ever seen two heli crashes spoon?
Mookie (original) replied to george_smiley's topic in Gallery
Wait, what happened to the M4 you found yesterday? -
Luck of the Irish - double smersh vest spawn @ heli crash
Mookie (original) replied to Irish.'s topic in Gallery
I think I found the same site a little afterwards - still had your friend's truck parked next to it. This was on the Pogorevka side of GM. -
That looks more right than my estimate, especially with those garage buildings. But that's miles from where he says he was.

I suspect that's the petrol station to the WNW of Svetlojarsk, at 135 020 on the DayZDB map. Is there a T-junction on the other side of the road from the petrol station? If you run down the road in the direction of the church you should encounter a town name sign beginning CBeT.. or similar. Could be wrong though, long time since I was in that part of the world.

How to avoid character resets and death while logging off
Mookie (original) replied to Mookie (original)'s topic in General Discussion
Lesson learned today after a sweaty fifteen minutes; even if your character shows as a freshie on the main log-in screen, all may still be well. -
Definitely spawn on non-persistent, and I think I just found one on a persistent. Received wisdom at the moment is that they're on both.
-
Agreed. Someone did some pretty intensive experimentation on this a few months ago - pre-Ghillies obviously. The darker colours and camo patterns like TTSKO tend to have higher contrast (unless in woods or shadows). From memory the conclusion of this work was that tan stuff was best, with the lighter pattern Gorka gear (which is also waterproof) a close second. My personal ideal clothing is the Gorka E-pattern stuff. I also tend to prefer beige or brown boots and gloves.

Cannot find any loot in any of the barracks on any server!
Mookie (original) replied to AmazingAussie's topic in General Discussion
This IME. Post 0.52 (and definitely in those insane hours just after the servers came back up), a lot of servers seemed to be entirely loot-free - not just at barracks but everywhere. -
Would be helpful if you could list the condition your items are in please. There is an overlapping trading community here who trust each other, having traded together before. If you are new, you may find specific conditions being attached to your meeting in game, such that all parties can maximise their security. Thanks.

Yes, he was an ok dude, as I believe you Americans would have it. I still feel bad about making him strip naked like that though.

Do random character resets still happen?
Mookie (original) replied to george_smiley's topic in General Discussion
That's odd. I thought it was in Alpha testing.
