Ah, but you do. Find a road (or any kind of roughly straight line) whose direction you know from DayZDB and compare your compass indication with it. Just work out the degree variation (and if your compass is pristine it's probably 90 degree one way or the other) and profit. Still, a bit of a pain if you know the map well enough not to need one.

True. Mind you, if I wind up in parts of the map that I don't know that well (ie the whole eastern half of it), or in the woods in the dark, even a dodgy compass might be a life saver.

All compasses, including several pristine ones I've used seem to be out by 90 degrees in 0.53. Count it as a 'feature'....

I'm not usually a fan of the 'more military weapons' thing, but FN FAL/L1A1 would be beautiful - very rare, accurate, semi auto. Slight background/lore problem though - how would one end up in Chernarus?

They're probably trying to get a more advantageous spawn point. Rightly or wrongly, many see the more northeastern spawns as bad ones because they're further from the big military locations.

True, and a real symptom of the fact that the game seems to become more complicated, but no better. We're not allowed to say that though because Alpha, etc.

Yeah, that's rough. Being a freshie these days can be seriously tough for the first half hour or so - even without the falling-through-the-floor bug. I had a pretty good day yesterday. Returned favours to a couple of folks by giving them fairly high value crash site loot. Then found a lootgasm at a blue caravan and picked up a pristine fire axe (had been running with a splitter). I don't see lootgasms very often these days, not least because I mainly run on persistence off servers (I'm a crash hunter). Thinking of changing this increasingly dreary playstyle and going exploring a bit more.

It's easy to see just how confusing this is becoming. Let me see if I can distil it down a bit: 1. 1st person/3rd person characters are different and independent of each other. If you accidentally log in to a 1st person, you will be a new spawn, but this shouldn't affect your 3rd person char. Your char in the main options screen may change to whichever flavour of server you were last on, but this doesn't necessarily mean you've been reset. . 2. Persistence on or off has no effect within 1st or 3rd person. Your char is stable across on or off servers. 3. Classical "resets" happen because a server has failed to connect to the central database so resets you as a fresh spawn. If it does manage to connect to the database while you are on it as a freshie, your old character will be overwritten. So get off it, fast. 4. Private hives are separate characters. If you die on the public hive, any private hive character should be unaffected. 5. When you log out, your char will remain in the game for 30 seconds. If you're being attacked by something, or someone, or if something or someone sees you and can have a go at you within that 30 second window, you will die. So give yourself a minute or two before you log out, sitting quietly in your shed, or bush, or whatever, to make sure something hasn't spotted you and is coming to get you. 6. To avoid mixing up different types of server, make use of the sorting tabs on the server selection screen. 7. Do not log into a server immediately after it restarts. Wait at least four or five minutes. So, if on one server you were running around with your pristine M4, Smersh, Gorka, FNX, etc and on the next you're feeling a bit chilly in the surf, one of the following has happened: You logged while under attack or under observation and really are deadYou have logged on to a server which has just restarted, or otherwise failed to connect to the public hive database. Get off it, PDQ.You have accidentally logged into a 1st or 3rd person server, when you were playing the other variety with your main char. No biggie.You have confused your public hive char with a private one. Again, no biggie.Finally, and just to make this even more confusing, naughty server admins use the message of the day options to say things like "Your character has been reset" etc, as a way of putting people off using their server. Don't trust those messages. If you have really been reset, there is no message...

1. Persistence. 2. Server management - admins shouldn't be able to kick on whim/for personal gain. 2. Heli crashes on persistent servers (yeah I know it's not a priority, but this has screwed my playstyle completely). 3. Framerate/optimisation. 4. You should be able to cook things on an open fire. 5. Boobies.

This is very true. I'm an M4 fetishist, but in the right hands the Mosin is unbeatable - at least at range.

I thought it used to have an effect on dispersion (ie accuracy)? At least when prone.

Of course. There are (?) upwards of two million footsoldiers in DayZ though. That's a pretty big army. I'm not wanting a democracy. but I do think we should be allowed to disagree, and express disagreement, with directions of travel.
