I got reset yesterday morning, took the 'all ok now' tweet seriously and spent the day gearing up, only to be reset again this morning.

Just had a random character wipe
Mookie (original) replied to THUNDERMINE's topic in General Discussion
I sort-of enjoyed running around getting geared yesterday, and happily my stash was intact. But I have a couple of issues about this. And before I set them out, no, I am not attacking BI or the devs, because I can imagine how much hard work went into resolving this attack. The first issue is that the hive is basically a database of items and who has them. Presumably that database updates and backs itself up. I can appreciate that if a wipe is necessary to deal with duping or other item identifier issues, that's one thing. But accidental ones, where either significant numbers or all players are wiped would seem to be another. Other games have rollbacks (I've been through a few). Perhaps there's an obvious explanation, but why doesn't DayZ? The second issue is BI's communications with players. I'm not really a fan of Twitter and am not on it much. There was nothing really here early yesterday morning about this, just one or two posts about apparently random char wipes - not unusual. In other words, for someone (and there were many of us) casually logging on yesterday, there was really little if anything to tell us what was going on. Is it really so hard to spend three minutes putting a sticky or a highlighted thread up here and on Steam about attacks or similar issues potentially affecting all players? Before the predictable 'alpha' or 'don't get attached to your gear'. I don't think they really constitute answers here. Nor does reposting Harton's Tweets. I don't usually go on Twitter before launching the game... -

Just had a random character wipe
Mookie (original) replied to THUNDERMINE's topic in General Discussion
Could do with a bit more comms on this one. I've just spent an hour on the same server, getting some basic survival stuff together so I can move north and see if my stash is still there. Now I'm getting re-wiped on every server. -
I think I can probably do that, but might have to wait til tomorrow.
-
The char-reset-at-server-restart issue should be getting better given that many (most?) are on 12 hour cycles now, no? OP, the most important thing to do is exit the server quickly before it has any chance to connect to the public hive and overwrite your character data.

So...you get killed by British people because you play on British servers? Can you see a connection here perhaps?
-
Hmmm. I think Wobo's testing (on YT somewhere...) showed that having lots of stuff in protector cases actually increased damage... There is some folk wisdom among PvPers that the Hicap is best for protection, but I've seen no evidence for that.

Logged in yesterday at what I thought was a pretty obscure and hidden spot in the far west. Problem is, someone else thought so too. So I logged in to the sound of truck; a very loud sound, about twenty metres away. Bearing in mind login lag, rather than engaging, I jammed the W key and fled down the hill and towards the woods. He (they?) came after me and pretty soon I was dodging through the trees trying lose line of sight so I could get away. After about ten minutes of this, I managed to do so. Thinking back, given that he was by now a good 150m or so away from me, and that I had an ACOG'd M4, the tactical advantage was with me and I should have gone prone and opened up on him. If he'd kept coming at me in the truck, he would have been in big trouble (and I had trees to dodge into). If he'd stopped and got out to return fire he'd probably also not have been in a great position. But I guess no one got hurt...

So British people don't have 'normal voices'? Also 'British' comprises a very wide range of accents, which will sound very different... We're not all Hugh Grant.

I haven't seen a syringe in 0.58...

[Proper Names 101] Quonset Hut vs Officer Tent
Mookie (original) replied to Weyland Yutani (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
How dare you! Anyway, this isn't linguistics, it's not even semantics. It's Yankee cultural imperialism, which is why I insist on calling it a Nissen Hut. -
[Expanded Logs] Loot Farming

That's on YT. I pulled him up on it and got some capital letters in response... -
When you know you play too much Dayz :p

Six months ago on my way to work, I saw what we'd call a DPM boonie hat on a stack of bricks. The builders hadn't arrived at that time in the morning. I instinctively picked it up. I still have it somewhere. It's worn. -
So, um, have: SMERSH vest (P) Gorka helmet (P) M65 jacket (olive, W) Seeking: M4 (P) Thanks

What are the risks of encountering the falling-through-the-floor bug in those apartment blocks btw?
-
Have: AK101 (P), with AK rail (P), polymer stock (P) AK101 mags (x2, P, full) SVD mags (x5, P, full) Seeking: 60rnd M4 mags (full pls) NATO suppressor (P/W) Thanks

Yeah. Pay-to-play. Problem solved. <_<

There was a series of terrible noises and then silence. edit: anyway, I don't care, I have an M4 again.

Huh? What threat? What advice am I not taking? As should be obvious from my first post, IME the UK GamingDeluxe servers are precisely not 'quite safe', even though they are as 'official' as those you cite. Anyway, Rick's point stands as far as I can see. If, in principle, a server can be taken down or fall over at any time, persistence is always a risk - which is why I'll only be stashing stuff in extremis from now on.

Over the weekend, I: 1. Caught cholera from pond water, even though I was fully healthy 2. Got over cholera, while stashing my M4 and high end loot in a barrel on an official server in case I died. 3. Woke up yesterday to find the server had disappeared. Despaired. Threw cat out of window. 4. Grew a pair, got back on the DayZ horse 5. Found another M4. Sheesh.

Hiking Jackets/ Wrong Description or ATM
Mookie (original) replied to KandyCid's topic in General Discussion
That's just life though, no? There is good and bad in it. A lot of people wear M65s to maximise their inventory slots, in the knowledge that it's not waterproof. I wear Gorka because I like to be all-weather. Ultimately I'd like to be able to wear multiple layers of clothing, especially if things get colder. -
So no point in vindictively shooting up hidden trucks then?

Appreciate your good wishes. I made a full recovery. Guess the total in-game time was about three hours. I think vomiting was good for me - if only because it cured that classic situation when hydration collapses post-sickness, where I was both red stuffed and thirsty... The best way to get rid of the 'I am tired' and 'I feel run down' messages was (predictably!) to lie down for an hour or two. Feeling immersed, I did so on a bed in a delightful cottage near Kamensk. But then I couldn't get back to healing/healthy. Taking shoes off (only for about ten secs) worked like a charm; not on any illness itself, but because my status was buggy and it needed a jolt to update. I popped my boots off, walked a few steps, and was almost immediately healing and then healthy. Then the server that I'd stashed my M4 and other goodies on in case of death just disappeared. Christ, this game is masochistic...
