Hi guys! I have found what I think is a bug/glitch, whenever I look at an aritifcial light source such as a chemlight on a nighttime server my screen goes completely black, except for the chemlight itself. I made a fire several weeks before this and it was fine, the light shows through walls and such but that's due to the current engine I think. I was trying to search in these forums for similar issues, found 1 other person with the same issue. theirs happened with a fire, mine happened with a chemlight. Don't know if this is a bug or not, just bringing it to the community/dev's attention. Thanks!

Screen goes black when looking at fire/chemlight
d.walker43 replied to IceCo7d's topic in Troubleshooting
lol, this same thing just happened to me literally 30 seconds ago! first time it has happened, I got off and came here and saw this post lol. It happened to me when i picked up a yellow chemlight and broke it. the screen went black except for the chemlight, i could see way better without the light then with it. I was on a nighttime server. Several weeks ago i made a fire, and it was fine when i did that. the light shown through the walls, but i think that their old version of DirectX can be blamed for that. Imma go report this as a glitch/bug on the tracker. -

that doesn't work. when you spawn in you will be a new character somewhere else, your body/items will be long gone. -
why not attach it where the heartbeat sensor is on this gun? I think that would be the most practical spot, so you could still have ballistics on your weapon. http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=gun+with+heartbeat+censor&FORM=HDRSC2#view=detail&id=0707CA029F12C8FD3FBCA8200DE2B7A75620E222&selectedIndex=14

It would work. However, I have what I think is a better solution. duct-tape your compass to your gun, like where a heartbeat sensor would go. use duct tape or another means to attach your compass or watch or GPS or whatever to the side of your gun. Then you could always be looking at it when your gun is up.

Hi there, im simply wondering/suggesting how realistic certain things in DayZ should be. I have read others posts and such, and I have decided to combine it all into 1 post. I think these such as fixing cars, gun maintaining, survival/hunting tactics, etc. should be made as close to real life as possible. By this, I mean like when you field strip a gun, the parts, order of assembly, etc. should be nearly identical to its real life counterpart. I say this, because I know that in a real zombie scenario, the survivors would be the types of people who knew things about guns, cars, hunting, etc. I think having real life knowledge of things such as these should be able to give you a slight advantage in game. I have several reasons for these thoughts. 1: Everyone talks about how the game should be as realistic as possible. I agree with this, the game even describes itself as a realistic zombie survival simulator. For example, if I know how to take apart a .22 in real life, if I would need to in-game I should be able to do it just like I would in real life. However, if I were a city boy that didn't know anything about guns, and in the zombie apocalypse my gun jammed, I would be screwed. I don't think that these players should magically be able to do this with the click of a button in-game. One solution suggested was to have mandatory manuals that would enable you to do these actions. 2: that being said, I think that field stripping a gun should be made as realistic as possible. Being an outdoorsman myself, I actually know how to take apart some guns In real life. I know I would be very frustrated if I had to drop a gun because I couldn't do something in-game when I already know how to do it in real life. I shouldn't need an in-game manual to magically give me the ability to do something I know how to do anyway. Same goes for getting a vehicle running. I know small engines very well, so if I found a non-running ATV in game and I could identify what is wrong with it, I should be able to attempt (and hopefully succeed) at getting it running without needing a magical book. The book would be useful because You could look to it for reference, but it shouldn't be required. I understand that people will complain "the casuals wouldn't know what to do" and such, but that shouldn't matter. Make it as realistic as possible, so having prior knowledge on things such as maintaining a gun and how an engine works and basic survival skills gives you a slight advantage in-game. I also understand that what I am suggesting might seem very hard to implement, however in reality it would not be. Allow me to use getting an ATV running as an example. Be able to inspect the engine, and get a simple, broad message saying what may be wrong with it. Have pieces laying around, such as spark plugs, carbeurators, piston heads and rings, and such. If you can determine what the problem is with the engine, this is where some prior knowledge will help. If you know that the gas is not igniting, you would know to try a new spark plug. In reality, it would not be impossible to make it at least somewhat realistic in-game. Thank you for your time, and please comment what you think of my ideas below.
-
hmm...I personally would say it should not disappear, but I don't know what it should do. Maybe go "down" a deterioration rank each time you replace it, until it is ruined? I definently agree that pieces should spawn outside of kits, but you would have to make sure people weren't building guns from scratch. I also think it should not be super easy to take parts out of a gun. I think that a screwdriver at least, maybe more tools should be required to take a gun apart. This whole thing would make tools much more important, not just for guns but for cars and stuff too, these should require several tools to work on. I really hope somebody important is seeing this conversation, we are coming up with some great ideas lol.

I like this. I had kind of forgotten about weapon cleaning kits, since they are so useless right now. However, I think your idea needs some tweaking, because otherwise people would just choose every option to guarantee it fixed it. Maybe make weapon cleaning kits be sort of like med kits, having them contain only weapon parts and cleaning tools and such. Have different parts, but not have to worry about every individual screw. Just have like new springs, trigger mechanisms, firing pins, etc. to replace in the gun, or use a tool from the kit to clean the barrel or something. basically convert the weapon cleaning kit into a 6-slot container for weapon pieces, cleaning tools, etc. I dont really understand the "maintain weapon" idea. are you suggesting having the ability to give the gun a basic cleaning whenever you wish, in order to keep it clean and gunk-free so it will jam less? makes sense, I always clean my guns after Ive taken them to the range for this reason. Assuming this is kind of what you meant? thanks.

I agree, especially the fact that it needs to be louder/heard from farther. I have shot many guns, and I know that a high-caliber rifle such as a mosin or m4 can be heard from miles away. This needs to be recreated in dayz. Zombies should immediately be attracted to sound, up to like 2 miles away or maybe even a little more. shooting an m4 in a large city should be suicide, they need to be much much louder.

hmm...this is an interesting idea. I like the idea of certain areas being harder to survive in, but I think that area should change. Maybe once weather is perfected, and it effects health, have massive snow-storms and such roll through areas, making the elements against you. I know that wolfs and bears are confirmed, but im not sure if they will be in specific areas. Anyway, I like the idea of areas being harder, but I think that should be based on storms rolling through and such, so the spot would always be different.
-
Ok, so if I know that in Dayz, I have to survive zombies, players, and the elements, and I know basic ways to do so, why play it? your just helping my point I made earlier. Alright, why? I'd like to hear an example of how realistic you think it should be then. If you think it shouldn't be as realistic as possible, what do you think it should be? The click of a button to get a very complex vehicle working? Or spending days finding parts for said vehicle? Or somewhere in-between? Please post an example as to what you think. Thanks for the constructive criticism, Im getting some great ideas from this. Keep it up guys.

OK, sorry about the confusion. I think I understand now. I still think that it wouldn't be that easy though. As I said before, I have several years of experience with small engines. I still make mistakes and get stumped quite often. Obviously real life vs video game it wont be as realistic, but it could be done to make it like this. Im sure after you did it several times in-game you probably would figure it out, but honestly, aren't all games like this? In MW3, if you played online enough, you figured out the best guns and perks. In Minecraft, you eventually figure out where diamonds and other rare ores are commonly at. You will eventually discover all of the secrets of a video game. DayZ is no exception to that.

Great ideas, love them all. I have 2 I would like to add. 1: realistic-ness of guns, cars, etc. Let me explain. Lets say you find an old car in a garage somewhere. It is close to running, but needs 1 or 2 things. I think it should be made realistic, so you could "inspect" the engine, and get a general message such as "the engine is not getting spark" or something. If you have some basic knowledge of cars, you would know that this probably means new spark plug(s). I think that it should be as realistic as possible, so having prior knowledge on the subject should help you slightly. Don't make so hard only an auto-mechanic could do it, but make it very realistic. This would make clans and such want people with specific skillsets like this, a clan would want people like a car expert, a gun expert, survival expert, hunter, etc. Would make the game that much more realistic. 2: Full-size radios that can be set up to broadcast to walkie-talkies and other radios across a very large portion of the map, if not the whole map. A clan could set one up at their base to broadcast messages to their whole clan. Could also be used if a survivor wanted to set up their own radio station others could tune in to. Could be another goal in-game to get a working long range comms system working. I think both of these ideas would be things that would be important in a real post-apocalyptic scenario, and would both be great additions to your list, and hopefully the game. Thanks for your time, and again great ideas so far.

I have to disagree with what you said. Field-stripping a gun is not a one-and-done situation. There are many parts, and it can be very different in a shotgun then in an m4 or something like that. Not everyone can do it. And remember stripping a gun isn't the only thing we are talking about. Getting a car or other vehicle running could be very hard to someone unexperienced, and it would take quite some time to explain how to do it to a noobie. A helicopter should be damn near impossible to get running. Ive been working on small engines in real life for years, and I still occasionally make mistakes and am sometimes stumped as to what is wrong with it. I don't think any scenarios like these are "one-and-done" situations. Thanks for your thoughts.
-
Your kind of right, but don't forget NPC dogs and other animals. Im pretty sure they are confirmed as well.
-
In real life, if your gun jammed, and you didn't know what to do, I agree, it might "fucking make or break" your situation. Remember guns are going to be made rarer, so it may be very common to see players using melee weapons or low-tech weapons such as bows and crossbows. Also, if you were in a group, and somebody in the group had knowledge of guns, they could fix it for you. This whole thing would make clans better, as they would want to have people with specific skill-sets such as guns, cars, hunting, etc. Also remember what I said about the manuals. If you found a manual for your specific gun, it would give you the step-by-step on what to do. I think that with the several things I have mentioned along with the fact that if you got extremely desperate the internet always has the answer, I think that there is several solutions if your gun malfunctions.
-
Hmm...your right. But there really isn't a way to fix the problem. There is and always will be people who look it up on the internet, no matter what game your playing. I simply think that a required manual is not the solution. I think I said this before, but I know that fellow outdoorsmen like me would be pretty frustrated if I couldn't do something in game because my character "doesn't know how" when in real life I could do said task easily. I just think the game should be as realistic as possible, and I believe that in a post-apocalyptic scenario having some knowledge of firearms or cars or survival tactics would give you an advantage. Honestly, I think that most of the people who would not have some sort of knowledge of anything (probably mostly casuals) would either be too lazy to look it up on internet, or even if they did it may still be hard to retain the information. Learning how to get a car working isn't a 1 video and your good deal. Some of these guys could probably use the extra knowledge. This whole idea would also improve clans too. Clans would want to have people with specific skill-sets, allow me to explain. Lets say that a clan has found a car, but it is not running. The clan would want to recruit somebody with some real-life knowledge of cars to attempt to get their vehicle running. Or they are camping in the woods, and need food. Somebody with hunting experience would be useful, as they would know how to hide from animals successfully and hit it in the right spot and also skin/cook the meat correctly. Idk, I just think that a required book in order to do a task that might be easy to some is a bit unfair, and overall would not be a good solution. No personal offense to you. Have a good day.

Great ideas. Liked all of them, except for the manual idea, which is good but needs some tweaking. I think the manuals should not automatically enable you to do whatever action. I think they should be like an actual manual, where it says step by step what to do. You could read it just like a real manual, and follow said instructions. If you mess up and cant put your gun back together correctly, too bad. looks like you'll have to leave it behind. I like these tweaks to your idea for 2 reasons. 1: Even without a manual, you should still be able to attempt taking a gun or something apart. Obviously if you have no idea what your doing it would be hard, but it should still be do-able. Basic tools like a screwdriver and such should be necessary to do this, this would make value of tools like this go up. Make it as realistic as possible, so having prior knowledge on things such as maintaining a gun and how an engine works and basic survival skills gives you a slight advantage in-game. I apologize for my post being so long, thank you for taking the time to read it. Again, great ideas you had. Have a good day.

Hi guys, so I saw in the latest status update that vehicles are being worked on. My question is, how will the physics and such work on these? Will it be GTA like where I can drift and hit jumps and be fine, or more like if I hit a tree going a bit too fast I will die type of deal? I personally would prefer a mix of the 2, a car wreck should obviously hurt/kill you but you should also be able to take some damage and hit some stuff and be fine. Also, how many different types of vehicles do they plan on having? 5? 20? 100? How hard will it be to get a vehicle running? Obviously a heli or small plane should be harder to get running/drive then a small car, but what will be required for these types of things? Any feedback about these questions or vehicles in general is appreciated, Ive looked around and havnt found too much info but anything you guys can provide is appreciated. Thanks, and please don't post anything unhelpful or just plain stupid.

I like your 4 piece map idea, but I do not like your pinpoint-a-spot-and-set-a-marker-like-in-Arma2 idea. This is unrealistic, you cant set magical waypoints everywhere in real life. Also, would ruin all the fun of trying to navigate using the stars or sun and such.
-
Really like this idea, one of the first things I would do in a post-apocalyptic scenario would be make spears for hunting, fishing, killing if necessary, because there easy. I also think if this is implemented, you should be able to attach a rope to your spear and shoot it through a bow (or tie a rope to arrow) and shoot it into water, making a harpoon that flies faster and better then throwing by hand. Where I live there is a river filled with Asian Carp, people go out (including me) and shoot them in the water with this kind of setup, easy way to rid the water of the vermin. Could be used to get good fish for food as well though. Anyway, good idea, if you want to add my suggestion you can.
-
Great idea, I always thought forests need to be wayyy denser. Not neccesarily rainforest like dense, but if you have ever gone hunting of any type, you know how dense a forest actually is. I also really like this idea because it wont effect performance a ton. I agree with the others on 1 thing. I do think that there should be 1 or 2 different models used along with this one, to provide some variety. Also maybe make grass in wooded areas much taller then it currently is, so if you were to lay down in grass you would be completely hidden in a forest/prairie. Somebody should have to be very close or have a very good eye to be able to spot you if you are hiding in the underbrush of a forest.
-
No, I have not experienced this myself. however, this brings up a valid argument. How does one ruin a rag in real life? a rag is literally a piece of cloth torn off of something. I don't see how you can really ruin something like this.

Hi guys, I found some powdered milk and then some cereal and realized something. Why cant we add water to the powdered milk, (like the in-game description says) and then add the milk to cereal? these items are both somewhat uncommon, so it would be fun to try to collect the items to make cereal. Maybe even other foods to eventually, such as collecting the ingredients for smores over the fire. Or some biscuits and gravy in the morning. The possibilities are endless. It would add another thing for people to do, you could sit around the fire with your friends eating cereal or other foods you cooked/made. Kind of a pointless idea, but it would be fun if it were implemented later. start with cereal, add more stuff later. Thanks for reading!

can you play dayz arma 2 mod with standalone online?
d.walker43 replied to fournier1592's topic in New Player Discussion
It is not possible, sorry. Either you would have to buy the standalone or he would need to buy Arma/dayz mod. They are 2 completely separate games. Sorry, but we cant help you.
