Yes, Zombies spawn as you approach an area. If you are quite distant and use binocs to recon somewhere before you head in (which you should always do by the way), you may notice no zombies. This means you are probably not going to run into other players in the area. They may be on the edges watching though. Always scan the town AND the surrounding hillsides, treeline, anywhere. Lots of zombies on a server means lots of the players are currently in a town. Fewer zombies means more of the players are out travelling in the wilderness between towns. Watch out for running into them. Loot, someone explained it pretty good. Get the stuff and then you have to leave the area for about 10 mins. As long as nobody else comes it will respawn, but the respawn is random...it might just be a bunch of empty cans. Zombies are not ALWAYS the indicator of other players though. If you go to a town, go slow and use cover ALL THE TIME. If you have to kill a zombie with a gun or have to fire a shot...IMMEDIATELY get out of town. You can always go back later. That shot is guaranteed to bring other players who will then kill you. Best weapon for zombies is a hatchet. Silent, one shot and fast.

When you need to revive a buddy real fast to either get the hell away or back in the fight you will be wishing for an epi-pen! :D

Sounds exactly like you are looking for a different game then. This mod is fun, the map isn't near big enough and you cannot possibly generalize "everyone" in your ridiculous post. Try something else, you might enjoy it more.

I got killed by a server hopper. I quit.
slyder73 replied to SP00KEH's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Your story is starting to fall apart. You had your back to the wall and yet he spawned behind you? You and your friend logged out on another server and logged in there after you got there from another server....server hopping. The other guy just got the drop on you first and now you are whining. -
If you are playign with new friends, go to a veteran server. The gameplay is no different, the zombies are exactly the same. The difference is in the settings around crosshairs on screen and how OTHER PLAYERS CAN SEE you at a distance. If your friends are new, it would be better for them not to be spotted 2 miles away and hunted because they glow nice and bright at distance. You guys will learn the map just as fast and stay alive longer. (Go download a good Chernarus DayZ map online and print it out or keep it up in the background. That helps a lot.)

That is a regular or recruit level server. The glowing shows off vehicles as well as players. Avoid these servers. Anywhere you go, anyone can see a nice big glowing circle where you are. Stick to Veteran servers. All that is turned off.

47 Day old wanting to upgrade from the stable 1.7.1.5 to the new 1.7.2.3.. Some questions
slyder73 replied to -Cdn-Chard's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
What if the previous code that he's playing on is stable for 47 days but things go wonky after 20 days on the new version of code? Don't presume to know what you're talking about unless you can think of all the possibilities. If things go wrong with the new code and he can post that what went wrong with the new is not occurring with the old version it may help narrow down issues. Think..... Playing in general is a test, no matter what combination of time and versions someone is playing. -

The whole point of DayZ is for players to play however they want, THEIR way. If someone chooses to play as a survivalist and rarely encounters other players and goes at it slowly that is great. If you choose to be in the hot zones and run'n'gun or whatever else you think is "fun" then by all means do that. Your way is no better and no more fun to someone else. Nobody should judge someone elses play style. DayZ is meant for ALL styles to work because of the nature of the large and open landscape and free gameplay. -
Vancouver here.

What can you get up there that isn't available at either the other airfields or in the spawns of military vehicles/helicopters around the map?
-
Everything you can get at the NW airfield you can get elsewhere. It just takes more time and more being careful in the travels. The NW airfield is only famious becasue every new player wants to go there after seeing youtube videos and forum posts about the NW airfield. I stay away from there and always have good equipment. Just have to learn what buildings give loot and how to become self sufficient.

LOL, wow, you need to play some Arma2 if you want to be in some real firefights. That way you won't have to cheat the way you clearly were doing in the video and then talking about it. You are the problem with DayZ. Not to mention...CALM THE FUCK DOWN!

Server hacked live, video from last night..and bandit revenge.
slyder73 replied to xxxxenoxxx's topic in DayZ Mod Gallery
Yeah, see that destruction all the time on regular Arma2 servers. Though that fire effect is not normal. It looks like some kind of badly done bomb script? Usually the explosion happens, buildings and environment destroyed and smoke etc, but the fire in the sky is not normal. Thats the hard part, keeping the hackers from doing it on DayZ -
Game Purchase only. WITH pay for skins on gear, clothes, characters. Does not change any gameplay or balance but simply cosmetic. People will pay for that. Studio developed. Community hosted servers

Agreed. There are several very large environments/maps with Arma2. Chernorus is the best for Zombies though becasue of the terrain. There is a lot a cover when one is out of the main towns of buildings. Navigation (once people learn the old revived skill of map reading and navigating by contour line and landmark) is managable. There is a good variety of settlement sizes. Some of the desert landscapes would be very difficult with Dayz because the huge open expanses with no cover (i.e. Takistan wouldn't work). Nogova would work nicely though. Panthera and Tora Bora as well. Though I would rather this be "perfected" and improved before anything else map-wise is worked on.

A Few Tips Coming from a Player with 180+ hours...
slyder73 replied to crispyglock's topic in New Player Discussion
Get a map online, print it out in large good quality or have it in the background. It's a correct topographical map. Learn to read the countour lines and landmarks to navigate. Once you find a compass this becomes much easier but it is not necessary. (Here is where all of us who grew up learning to navigate the wilderness before GPS can shine! LOL) In your current situation, find a road, follow it. It will get you someplace. Good luck finding water and food there but make sure you slow crouch or belly crawl in so you don't get Zombies on you. -
URGENT: Two flying choppers?!!!?
slyder73 replied to Inception.'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Last night someone spawned an A-10 and was making flybys firing the cannons and dropping bombs. Hackers have been around in Arma2 for years and will continue to be. Try to write down time, server and circumstances and names if you can get them. Vids or screenshots help. Post. Dealing with them will be a difficult issue given the Arma2 engine but every report helps. -
This is the point. BOTH gameplay styles are available. THose who like to be in smaller areas with more players to encounter can go to the major towns. THose who want to survive and build up more slowly to a self suficient position can avoid the major towns and airfields. The "map" isn't just a map like other games have, the so called map is a massive piece of territory several hundred square km. Whatever game style you like, play it. No need to exclude a style that you don't use.
-
I think the OP is just not used to playing Arma2. The map is too small I think. For DayZ it works great, and it is a realistic setting.
-
Winchester repeating rifles do not fire 12 guage shotgun shells. They are not shotguns. They fire heavy slugs, in the game, they are the 1866 slugs.
-
Be very vigilant and careful. Do a belly crawl to avoid zombies when approaching buildings. The "visual" indicator on the debug monitor has a number, that number is the distance that Zombies can see you at. The more exposed youare the easier they can see you. Lay down, get into buildings and search for guns. In a pinch an axe/hatchet will do great. It is silent and 1 shot kill on a zombie. If you run into a building while being chased, the zombies all stop at the doors to walk in. You hit them there one at a time. Just play more, it takes time. Don't rush around in the open. As for picking up an actual weapon, scroll your mouse to the gear menu you see in places. Someone mentioned it, but play the tutorial or the training missions in the actual Arma2 game. That will really get you familiar with the game mechanics. There is quite the learning curve if you are new to Arma.

I just got this updated to fix the screwed up version Six Updater did to me earlier. My character had been reset earlier. I load with this new one and I'm at a location and with the equipment I had about 3 or 4 weeks ago. Not a problem since this puts me in a better position that reset on the beach. Has anyone else reverted to a much older character save?

Banned when joined a higher beta server US133
slyder73 posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I noticed US133 had beta 94949. I tried to join and got the instant red text saying "You were banned." Be careful until the mess is straightened out. There are about 6 different beta versions running on different servers that all seem to have their stated descriptions not correct to teh actual version running and goodness knows what version SixUpdater has given me that everything is black screen. -
Character has been reset in 1.7.2.1/1.7.2.2
slyder73 replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
I also had to reset. Though I can't play yet, my screen is mostly black. But I'm a new charactar on the beach.
