I would have thought it would be dx11. We may even get better lighting and shadows, certainly more efficient shadows with dx11. I think at times dayz can look really nice, then other times when it looks like a dx8 game, I think that's mainly down to lighting and the use of textures, lack of things like bump mapping etc.

I applaud any designs to increase the physics in dayz, but I can't help but feel that the controls are fiddly enough as it is. I would rather you just be able to walk up to a door and it auto opens for you as you push into it. The way the doors open now are so slow and unresponsive as well, if you could run through them and have your character auto-stick out his arm, then that would be enough for me. After all, it's a survival simulator, not a door opening simulator.

What clothing set/weapons would you add if you could?
Ben_uk replied to SomeCallMeNomad (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Bandana / face scarf / mask. RPG-7. Uzi 9mm -
Just wondered if the ability to drag bodies to another location was going to be a feature?

I'm liking these updates. Keeping the community informed really helps stop the negative feelings and it helps to be "kept in the loop", no one wants to feel like they are in the dark about things etc.

What is it that makes the fps so bad? Engine? DX9?
Ben_uk replied to Halven (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
I have noticed a slight degradation in performance recently too. When they moved to the 64 bit servers a few patches ago, everything became really snappy and quick. Inventory movements were slick and doing actions like jumping or drinking / eating were instant. Now I get big pauses when doing an action. I left click on an item to inspect it or whatever and im waiting 2-3 seconds before the menu appears and so on. Moving to a new renderer would help, it would also open up the opportunities for new lighting effects and so on. Making the engine more multi-threaded is essential, but also isn't an easy task I admit. -
I personally am not all that fussed with the military gear. I much prefer the more rugged look of civilian clothing, this isn't supposed to be Arma 4 after all. When I think DayZ, I think of the kind of look that rebel insurgents have in the middle east. They have backpacks and are "military" of sorts, yet they don't look like actual army.

Wheres the best place to run without getting killed?
Ben_uk replied to aj1's topic in New Player Discussion
That is generally a good idea, however I had the bad experience of doing something similar and then the server disconnected without any warning and I lost a bunch of stuff, either that or getting kicked for no reason, which happens a lot (to me anyway). Either way, it results in you losing gear if its not in your hands or on your back. -
I found one the other day in the military base just south of the north-west airfield.

I wondered why when shooting a zed with a silenced rifle, another 4 came running my way.

New graphic renderer - graphics improvements?
Ben_uk replied to Ben_uk's topic in General Discussion
I hear you on the interiors, the lack of any lighting doesn't help. What I would like to see is more obvious signs of a zombie apocalypse. Burning buildings, downed phone lines, tipped over cars / trucks, more blood splattered over stuff and so forth. Is this still a dx9 engine? -
I want to believe Dean when he states that the PC won't get the shaft. However I have been burned before. The most recent time was when DICE stated that Battlefield 3 was PC lead platform. Anyhow after the release and many broken promises (lies) to the community later someone eventually asked a DICE dev a direct question saying "we thought BF3 was PC lead platform", to which the dev responded "at the time, it was". To be honest I've never encountered a more dishonest, unprofessional bunch of devs than those that spun those lies before the BF3 launch.

==My First Kill(s)== I just killed two people at the airfield, in the building with the stairs and prison bit at the bottom as you enter. Ive never actually killed a single other person before, but like buses, you wait for one, then two come at once... I felt kinda bad afterwards, they were obviously a team, and they were mega kitted up. Afterwards I was kinda surprised I managed to get the better of them because I am so noob. When I saw the second guy, I didn't know why he didn't react (to his pal being shot) and shoot at me. They both had M4A1's and a ton of ammo, which I relieved them of. I panicked so much when I saw these guys, literally my heart began pumping and I was actually shaking a little. In my defence, ive been shot and killed so many times, usually at the airfield. In fact yesterday I was looting the tents at the other end of the runway and I took refuge in one of the checkpoint huts to simply save and exit, but a split second before I pressed ESC, I heard; pop pop pop and my screen going grey and bonkers. I just began to run and I was bleeding massively, then I heard more gunfire, I began to zig zag, then I hid in some bushes for about a min, bandaged myself, waited another 2 min, then just ran off into the trees. Oh then my character got deleted... hah. Oh well, I guess "anything goes" at the airfield eh?

Well, a zomb clipped through a wall today when I was looting a building (with only 1 door), so it had to come through the only entrance which I was facing. The navmesh isn't perfect thats for certain, but its better than what we had 2 months ago, which was 100% broken instead of 20% broken as of now.

Some kind of clown costume. -
I think new towns are good and all that, but what I would like to see is more unique building assets rather than just copy / paste the same ones from town to town. I know unique assets are memory hungry and the fact we are going console now probably reduces the chance of a mass of new extra map assets, but one can dream.
-
When my character got wiped I got a message at the bottom left of the screen saying so. Therefore I don't think it's that.
-
I think if you get more than 2 on you, you should just run away. It's too risky at the moment to deal with multiple zeds, particularly if you are in a town when fps goes right down and the whole game lags more than if you are in an open area. I managed to dispatch 4 at once, but I had to go into a building and up some stairs and I dispatched each one as they paused at the top of the steps.

Part of me does think that the PC controls are at times unnecessarily complex. The one thing I instantly springs to mind is why do I have to bring up my inventory to insert a bullet or reload a weapon? Ideally I should just be able to press "R" or something to reload the gun in my hands. However I do agree, that the PC keyboard command system will be tough to do on a pad. My guess is that they will incorporate some kind of hot screen menu with loads of commands that you can push a direction on the pad for, similar to the "spotting menu" from battlefield.

The Melee didn't work great before, but for me its even worse now. Its made worse by the generally "clunky" player movement, and the fact that when I press a shortcut key it doesn't always register, or it registers twice and then im getting my ass handed to me whilst I get out then immediately put away my axe, because there is a massive delay on the keypresses.

Are the new chopper crash sight models place holders?
Ben_uk replied to battlerhd's topic in General Discussion
The whole game is a placeholder ;) There are a lot of things in dayz that I hope will get replaced. Some of the in-game textures look quite good, but others less so. One that stands out to me is the runway concrete at the airfields, it looks pretty bad, really low-res, that could so with some improvement. -
I think it's a slippery slope. How many great pc developers have moved to consoles only to totally forget about the pc platform, or treat it with utter contempt, still kinda support it but in a poor fashion. Even if dayz is negatively unaffected by the console development, what about the next title? I also consider it a shame that the pc is losing one of its killer exclusives. I think it's probably a boost for BI, it might even help dayz's development, I'm not sure, but the one thing it's definitely bad for is pc gaming as a platform. The pc needs titles that you can't get on console to keep the pc alive. Too many once great IPs have moved to console and turned to s***. I just hope that isn't the case this time.

How many ammo do you carry?
Ben_uk replied to HeroAtDay BanditAtNight's topic in New Player Discussion
I am basically turning this game into a ammo collecting simulator. I got a new larger jacket last night, I think it was 12 slots rather than 8, guess what I then did? Filled it with more ammo. I have ammo for every kind of gun I think, I just never want to throw any away. I have loads of rifle lead, lots of 9mm, loads of another handgun (ACM?), and ive recently picked up 3 drums of 75 AKM and last night I got two 30 clip AKM mags too. I recently dumped the M4 that I was carrying as I could never find any ammo for it, I also dumped the shotgun and a massive pile of shells because it just wasn't as effective as it should be as a weapon. -
Describe Your Playstyle In 5 Words Or Less
Ben_uk replied to Karmaterror's topic in General Discussion
Scared, coward. I've played for maybe 30 hours and still not killed anyone yet. -
I'm not sure dayz will find an audience on the consoles. Most of the console guys I talk to dislike games like battlefield and prefer cod, why? Because apparently the maps in battlefield are "too big". Now if people find the maps in battlefield too big, how are they going to cope with dayz? It will blow their minds. The majority of console gamers prefer near constant action, the gameplay in dayz is the opposite of that. It's a real slow-burner. I just played for an hour on dayz, what was that hour made up of? I was sneaking through fields and two towns, and I killed 2 zombies, not exactly a action packed session, but it is what it is, and that's the gameplay, it's tense and spooky, but not "constant action". I can appreciate not every gamer is the same and there are bound to be people on console who will be interested, but will it have a mass audience? I don't know...
