Positive posts only: what feature are you looking forward to
Ben_uk replied to aviza's topic in General Discussion
- Barricading / base building - New graphic renderer (better performance + visuals) - Zombie AI overhaul -
A few days ago I met about 4 guys walking through Berezino. They were all quite new spawns like me, I think I had an axe. We hung out for a bit just chatting, then we met two other guys, they tagged along as well. Then out of no where someone shot one of our guys dead in one shot. So we all decided to storm the apartment tower with nothing more than fists and really basic weapons. We managed to kill 3 fully kitted out bandits, that felt good… J

This is so often the way of things. People request features, then in reality when the features are in place, players go out of their way to avoid these elements. I play a lot of racing sims, and one sim which was released years ago didn't have rain or weather. For the next title the community begged to have rain included, the devs obliged. What happened in reality was that anytime a random weather server flipped over to raceday and it was pouring rain, the server emptied. When I asked some racers why they quit when faced with a rainy race, most of the answers were "every wet race turns into a crash fest", or "the rain badly effects my FPS". So why have these features if people aren't going to use them, its bonkers.

If they are holding guns in their hands, take it they are not "friendly", that's how I approach it.

I would think that at the very least the server would need to track the resting location of a downed body, maybe some of it is client side and some is server side. I would certainly say the actual ragdoll animation itself is client side.

I looted a magnum off some bandits that had been shot, I had it in my backpack for like a week, but then I got dead and never got to fire it.
-
I went up a inside ladder in one of those barn / warehouses, then I got out my axe as someone was up there with me. When I got my axe out, I then began to freefall through the metal platform down to the ground, to obvious death.

That martyrdom bullcrap from COD4 was one of the things that really started to turn me off the COD series, that and it's blatant consoleified features and maps. I hope such a thing doesn't come into dayz, it's just cheap and not needed.

I was pretty well geared up and was walking through Berez, this guy approached me, he seemed friendly enough, he just asked if I was with anyone and what id been up to etc, then we walked together into a house to find him some food (as he said he was hungry), then he said over his mic, "im really sorry but I need that AK", then he wacked me with his axe and I was dead in one blow.

I had a rubbish spawn location, so I decided to throw myself off a tall building. I jumped off, fell maybe 4 stories onto the ground, and then just carried on walking about. The strange thing was, that I actually died about 2 minutes later as some bloke shot me. I respawned on the coast, then I ran for maybe 30 seconds in open country, then I had a message saying I had broken legs and the screen went black and I was dead... :\

What do you think about the building interiors in this game?
Ben_uk replied to Avant-Garde's topic in General Discussion
For me the interiors suffer from flat lighting and low res, compressed looking textures. I do appreciate though that not many buildings were enterable before, so that's some progress, but the things I've mentioned plus the terminally slow door opening speed are kinda frustrating issues. -
Just wondered what the state of the weapon sounds were? I think some of the rifles sound ok, but guns like the m4 and even the akm don't sound all that great. Are these sounds placeholders for later "better" sounds?

I personally get the same lag issues and sloppy menu responses in a 5 man server and a 40 Man one, so I'm totally convinced that the lag is caused by the number of clients connected.
-
I had the same experience when I was a noob. You have to just keep wandering around until you find the first reasonably big town, find the town name sign (usually at the start and end of the town) then alt + tab onto dayzdb.map, look for the town name and try and get your bearings. The in game maps are next to worthless to be honest.
-
Didn't they used to have 100 player servers or something? Or is that in Arma II?
-
Yep, the m4 sounds particularly poor. I guess more could be done in terms of reverb effects and so on, but that would require sound engine changes I'd imagine .

As per title thread really. Taking shelter under large trees should stop you becoming wet/soaked. I guess this would have more benefit when weather and stamina come into play more.

Sheltering under trees should stop you getting soaked
Ben_uk replied to Ben_uk's topic in Suggestions
Hmm, strange. It was pouring down yesterday on a server and I was sat under a big pine, yet was still getting soaked...? -
Dean said it was a collision issue, I'm sure it will get fixed.

I want to make a nice hotpot or bubble and squeak. I'll check down the supermarket in berinzino tonight on my way home from some murdering.

I "fell" off the tiny 3 step entry platform of a police station and broke my leg. Kinda frustrating.

They have already started uncoupling the renderer from the simulation, which will help massively. Then there is further work to do on the multicore support. Then after that there will be general asset optimisation, LODs etc, so there is some way to go yet. Multicore support and a new renderer sadly, isn't the work of a moment, but it will come.

How are you going to carry a helicopter rotar blade? Aren't they about 20 metres long or something, maybe you could just stick it in your pocket...? :/ It's going to be quite amusing seeing fully decked guys in military combat gear riding a bicycle.

I found my first heli crash site last night, and I also found my first flashbang there too.

With the news that Dayz will be having a new graphic renderer to cater for the console release, what do people think that Dayz needs, visually compared to what we have at the moment? To be honest, I could live with the current state of the visuals, if the performance was sorted out in big towns / cities, it gets very choppy even on my modest rig, however I would hope that the following things get looked at; General performance improvements, particularly in big towns + cities Improvements to landscape textures. Some of the ground and building texture works is very good, however there are some textures which could really use some improvement. The runway texture at the airfield looks pretty bad and low res. Some of the grassy textures again could be improved upon. The distance textures for some of the fields and land, look really low-res. I hope these could be improved. Blood squirts (when shot etc) could do with some improvements. Distance vegetation; The distance at which long vegetation is drawn needs to be increased and locked down. Someone hiding in bushes shouldn’t be penalized because on another person’s screen these aren’t drawn because they have options turned down or because they are too far away to have them drawn yet. Trees; some of the trees could look better. I think the pines look nice, however some of the other trees don’t look all that great, particularly the lighter brown trees. The distance trees look quite poor too (though I read that these are being worked on at the moment?) It would be interesting to know exactly what level of graphical detail BI think would be “acceptable” for PS4 customers, since graphically, console games tend to look better and have more work put into how they “look”. If PC gamers will also profit from this then great.
