Before my favorite gun was the SKS. It was easy to find and ammo spawned everywhere and the internal mag is great, too. Now the ammo is too hard to get, as I don't visit military places often. So now I use what I can find. This is usually a shotgun or a repeater. Prefer the shotgun, though. Later I might switch to sawn off shotgun + mosin with LRS, if I live long enough. My last M4 I got from a guy I killed with an ice axe. But lost all the attachements due to the last patch and then got killed by a mosin. M4 is great of course and I used it regularly when it grew on trees.

Anyone else who can't fill water bottles?

Lol. That's why it's called "QWERTY".S3V3N was obviously talking about the "QWERTZ" layout which is used in Germany and other European countries. On topic: I, too, have problems on full servers. Sometimes it just takes a few tries, but other times it won't work at all. If you have a friend on the server he xan try to fill the bottle for you. He might not have the problem at that moment. -
I hope we'll get something like this. But shouldn't be too easy to craft or start a fire with.

All u really need to find to make a fire are matches. The rest you can gather literally everywhere. Go and find a book. They are in every village, just check the houses. Right click the book and tear out a page. Go into a forest. With nothing in your hands crouch and look at the floor. Scroll with your mouse wheel...search for kindling. Repeat until you find "something". You will see a stick in your inventory or in your vicinity (if not enough room in your inventory). Combine paper and stick to create a fireplace kit. You can add more sticks you find for fuel. But I think in the actual version you only need fuel if you want to cook something.

You could catch a rabbit with a snare made of wire and a stick. I haven't tried to tan a rabbit pelt but I guess it yields one tanned leather, too?!

I love it that we can craft clothes now. So now I only need to find a rope, garden lime, rags, matches, a cooking pot and a leather sewing kit to survive. All of this stuff is very common atm. Anything else is optional. As to not seeing anyone inland. I feel quite safe inland and in the woods, but you can still meet people. I was somewhere in a small village not really watching my surroundings, when I left a house and a mosin bullet just misses me. A guy stood on the road aiming at me. Luckily he missed all his shots and I disappeard into the woods. (My bow was empty, otherwise I would have tried to sneak up on him.) -
Meat. what does it say when its get cooked.

First of all: this guide is very old, so things have changed a lot since Jan 2014. I agree with pilgrim. If surviving is your goal you don't need all this fancy military gear. Many players get the illusion of being safe when they run around in military gear and a M4. Only yesterday my friend and I killed a fully geared player. I hit him once with an ice axe and my friend finished him with one shot from his blaze. The guy didn't even fire one shot from his "superior" weapon and his gorka outfit and smersh vest+ backpack didn't safe him. Neither did his 8 magazines full of ammo, ect... Point is: all this great gear won't help you if you don't watch your back. -
Public servers that say "PvE only" always attract people who kill on sight. My friend and I were playing on such a server today. "Found" me a fully decked M4 there. (The first one since the days when they grew on trees.) Not saying we always kill on sight. Depends on our mood and situation. Edit: For learning crafting it's better to go into the forests and hide somewhere.

IF they really change the zombies (better AI, hordes,...), this could change the whole game to become even better. If you are alone you need to go full stealth in the cities to get some loot there or just live of the land in a remote place. With a big group you could risk a more open approach, but would still be in danger of attracting other groups of players and/or could get overwhelmed by a horde of zombies. I would love to see a bigger threat by the zombies. -
First time cooking - what am i doing wrong?

Either a bug or intended to make us use the tripod as de_snake mentioned. Would kinda make sence for meat. If you through meat in the fire I doubt you still would want to eat it in RL. You would at least put it on a stick to hold it over the fire. Cans should work, though. Petty that they don't, atm. Will try the tripod with my survival character. -
My friend and I live very far apart (7 hours time difference) so it's impossible for us to both have a good ping when we play together. My friend usually plays with the high ping. 300-400. Most of the times he doesn't even notice it. He kills more ppl than I do and if he has problems with picking things up, I usually have them, too. So those are not ping related in our case. Seems to me that a ping of 300-400 is still well playable atm.

Since we got paddles now we might get boats, (improvised?)rafts of some sort in the future. Would be a better way to get there. -
I either run alone or with one trusty RL friend. We are both not "military guys" and don't like to be ordered around. So we decide together what to do and when we engage. Sometimes, when there is no time to communicate what to do, one of us opens fire and the other engages, too, or tries to flank the threat. We haven't encountered hostile groups bigger than 3 people yet and we win fights as often as we lose them. As long as we don't die because of bugs we don't mind dieing. We are not made for big squads, I guess.

Hi, does anyone know what that means? Read it in the patch notes. For me that would mean it's somehow possible to craft the whole bow without items you need to find (e.g. a rope). Most likely I missunderstood it, though. The last few days I am desperate to find a rope. I want to go "back to to nature" and live somewhere in a forest. I have all my farming equipment, arrows, stoneknife and a splitting axe. All I need is a bow now. So if everybody knows what that means, I would be very grateful. :)

What gun was your first shooting kill with?

Mine was with the magnum in the "prison building" at the NWAF. The guy was upstairs and most likely sorting his stuff as he didn't react at all when my first bullet went into the wall next to him. I had played for many hours before that and was pretty excited about my first kill. -
Yeah, you're right. Need to practise more with it. Will look for a nice place for that. But that's a good thing. Shooting a bow in real life needs a lot of practise, too.

I caught a rabbit with a trap. You get a small pile of guts from rabbits. But they can't be used for crafting a bow. At least I didn't get an option when I dragged the guts over the ashwood stick. Must be from bigger game, I guess. But I found a rope now anyways. Practising shooting now. Not that easy. Lost many arrows in the forest before I killed that cow. ^^

Do rabbits yield guts, too? After chasing a cow and a deer without luck, I decided to catch a rabbit with a snare trap. Unfortunately I couldn't find the trap anymore after a few minutes. If I can't manage to catch an animal without a ranged weapon I will look for a rope or a gun and lose the gun after I got an animal.

Thanks guys. So I will try to catch an animal with my splitting axe. :D I only can search for stones/feathers when my hands are empty. Crafting the stone knife can fail. Just try again, until you get the message that you crafted one. (The stone gets lost when the crafting fails, though.)

Once DayZ is complete; Will it require studying?

They could put some books in the game that explain certain things. Like a small and basic survival guide. Would make the books more important and useful. Other things people would have to find out by themselves or look up online. -

Maybe desync or a newer bug. Last time I encountered and killed someone in a police station is a few months back. Didn't have a problem back then. But was with an M4.

Hello. I have the same problem! My game crashed (it usually never does). When I restarted the game my screen was "streched" strangly, so I tried to change it back. I wanted to set it to "normal" quality and now I`m having the same problem as the OP. The highest possible resolution for me is now "640x400". No higher options available. :/ I deleted the game via Steam and deleted all other DayZ files manually. After reinstalling I still have the same problem. If anybody knows what to do, I would appreciate it. EDIT: Found the solution here: >klick< Should read ALL threads before posting, but at least I didn`t make a new one. ;)
