What's the current hacking status like in DayZ:SA?
bauertschi replied to RadikulRAM's topic in General Discussion
The sheer volume of absolute crazy stuff about cheaters in the mod that is shown on youtube kept me from buying the Arma II package when it was on steam sale shortly ago. From everything I have read/seen there was (don't know if it's still) way more possible in the mods concerning cheats. Concerning kichilrons attitude as a mod. Why should he not have the same rights to voice his opinions as everyone else on this forum? WTF??? As long as he does not hide posts, give warning points (...) or otherwise uses his privilages against those of other opinions, there is absolutely no problem, so: PS: Maybe YOU should try accepting that he has his own points of view/opinions. The sheer audacity of some asking from others what they don't show themselves... -

This topic will continuously grow whenever someone finds a cheater or a presumed cheater. A lot of things are unnerving, currently though I would say that the random char resets are way worse than the cheaters. In the group I play in, we were four ppl and ALL lost our char on a server that somehow ate our chars after we left it. Then we encountered ppl hiding in walls/rooms in the af prison buildings quite a few times. Lets not forget the blatant looking through walls thing that's going on currently. Getting killed because of things like that is just as bad for me. Concerning the "real" cheats, my encounters with a flying dude and a speedhacker have passed for some time, haven't encountered those since. Currently there are probably way more deaths due to desync - see my post http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/168635-whats-the-current-hacking-status-like-in-dayzsa/page-42#entry1963924 - for me almost as unnverving again. At this point I don't even care about things like ppl with thousands of bullets in their mags so much. They still have to kill you before you kill them. I don't really think they are more dangerous than legit players with 60 bullets. Now should they simply have also cheated in their m4s, that's another problem. If you encounter such ammo things, please use a mag to get some stacks of 40 or 60 or whatever and then throw the rest away somewhere where others should not find it. The server restarts will eat them. Someone posted that after logging back in, (s)he had all that ammo in the mag again, but it did work for me. What I am worried about most is ESP stuff, because it is practically invisible to legit players. Many other things (thousands of ammo mags being an example) can be done through server side sanity checks, and I fully understand that that will only be done later, especially with the very low responsiveness servers currently show with 20+ ppl. I think ESP is what BE specialises next to other things, if I am not mistaken. But there is probably also a huge factor on client side accessability there, that again is BI's concern. Only BEdev-sable can really say anything about that, I guess. His sig is stuck at "160,000 and counting..." since I first saw it, but I don't know if he updates that ;). I guess a simple statement like "# accounts banned in the last month" would probably even out some of our emotions here, but the exact numbers are probably not intended for the public. -

Concerning all those invisible player thingies: Currently on stable I get a lot of desync, I really think it is highly dependant on the number of players, but sometimes also happens on practically empty servers. Now my flatmate can force that issue by hogging all the bandwidth. Sooo I end up with an extremely high ping. In that case a guy I played with simply was frozen in a running animation behind a fence. For science I hit him. He was hit on his client even though he was at least 100 meters away at that point, simply because I had a laggy connection and had him on my cient stuck at the fence. He even got those hits immediatelly, so that was synced. So combine that with how it looks from the other side, people all of a sudden getting updated on their server positions, and being "teleported" on the other clients. That also explaines how people shoot and kill you when they don't even aim at you (from your point of view). That does not mean there is no speedhack and teleportation, but you really have to look at what's going on. I wrote about three incidents where I cried "cheater" after all. But one should be careful about those claims, I hope, I am. Another anoying thing is that some here think that all those ppl should stop complaining about getting killed by supperior players. If getting a "lag-drop" on someone (and it probably is in many cases) is a sign of supperior gameplay for you, well, for me it is not. Of course it works both ways, but in such a situation, there is no way to tell who was supperior. Those posts don't accomplish anything if they don't discuss what people perceive as having encountered cheaters. -

Worked with me, had nice 60 round packs. -
Killed two duds on the roof of a police station with a shotgun, both at about 2m. 2 shots to the chest each, so that works, don't know of one shot would have been enough though, I paniced and - thank god - had a speedloader.

another interesting m4 60 mag with more than 8k bullets from a guy I shot down. Emptied it, loaded it, only took 60 bullets, so I created a few stacks of 60 and threw the rest away. The m4 had everything including bipod and agog, absolutely pristine. But that can be collected, I guess. -

Yes, tried to send a pm last night about something I did not want to post for everyone to read, you currently cannot get those for whatever reason. BTW, I cannot claim to have died to a cheater in the last weeks, but people hiding in walls and unaccessable rooms is getting out of hand, especially in prisons - actually don't know if that is even done somewhere else. Even people without weapons use that now to hide from others, when they hear you. It's getting kind of dumb to even go to prisons in my opinion. -
Maybe I'm wrong, but if remember correctly, Merino said that would not help with poisioning somewhere. Even if I remember correctly, there is still the chance that things changed in the last months or Merino was mistaken. Well I stand by my point, don't drink that stuff :). And if you are forced, the general rule remains, take care to be always completely hydrated and energized beforehand. And try to stay that way. It's useful. Would have died at least two more times if not for regeneration.
-
I think you are wrong about throwing up being helpfull. Merino put up plenty of vids concerning the health system, he is also pinned here somewhere because of that. Anyways, here is how to survive a chemical poisioning on his youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96Pv7aHefyI I had watched several LPs at that time but I actually decided to get the game after seing his vids, particularily the linked one. It showed me how deep the game really goes into details. Now when you are not in the highest healing stage though, you will fall unconscious and can only be saved by others forcefeeding you - good luck right there. Maybe you can log off and get a trusted medic to help you, though? If you are on second stage regeneration, you probably really need a water pump to negate the water loss when puking though, I doubt anyone has enough fluids on him in such a situation. And then you need to take into account the kos problem, so you should not really always sit next to the pump...problems over problems. I have simply never taken disinfectant with me, so that won't happen to me. If I remember correctly it will enable you to disinfect rags in the future (maybe already implemented) and lower your probability of getting infections (not implemented), so just drinking and eating directly out of the inventory is maybe a saver way for you ;).

I was looting the police station in Svetlo, a guy from outside with a russian accent asked that whoever was inside come out without the weapon equipped. Said he would not shoot. I had found a m4 but no ammo that was on my back and a shotgun in my hands. Otherwise I was still pretty fresh, not older that 2 hours. I told him, I would come outside with my shotgun lowered, did not want to drop it. He accepted. Gave him some food, he asked for the m4, said he had ammo for it, told me I could have his SKS with ammo. We went inside the police station, looted it dry, went onto the roof and all of a sudden a second player came up the stairs with a baseball bat. I warned the guy, almost shot the new one, but the one I met before yelled, that it was his friend. I had already dropped the m4, the other guy had already equipped it and I started to feel really uneasy - well even more. I went up to the m4 guy and asked for the SKS when the other came from the side and started working me with the baseball bat. The first one starts yelling "Stop! Not neccessary, I have handcuffs!" At that point is simply double tap "w", run like two meters, turn around and put both shotgun bullets in the baseball-bat guy. I turn again, run around the stairway while using the one snaploader I had and again put two shots in the m4 dude that was just just trying to get his m4 from the back. Then I congratulated them for the well performed banditry. After that I got my SKS, a pristine green ballistic helmet, most other things were ruined. I was still new to killing then, that were kills 3 and 4 for me. A made a big mistake by not shooting the m4 guy first, I just acted and the first one comming into view was the bat dude. And maybe one shot is enough on close distance? I really don't know. Then there is the thing about going out in first place, my chances would have been way better just lying down at a good position with the shotgun, but I decided to take the risk, really, my other gear was neglectable, so it was not that hard. If I had chosen to stay inside, I would have never had that great experience. I really think you have to take such chances sometimes, even if you die. It is just way more rewarding than hiding in a bush and shooting someone that runs past and watching the corpse fall. That incident following a flying Boba Fett killing me convined me to record all dayz gameplay, I don't upload it, but for friends and good memories. Watching your wins and fails and really reflecting about the whys also really helps improve your strategic play, I think. Now I just have to find a way to learn the mosin and LRS gunplay without going to the coast and shooting bambis...well, currently I have an m4, so maybe I'll think of something till I die again.

I was about to write that into the stable thread, but as it might be the same as with you - I just died on the very top of school in Berezino today. Just out of the blue: "You are dead." I was not even moving at that moment. I was completely alone on the server, noone else, well fed and watered. So it is possible to simply die. -

Probably not. When you log out, you sit down for 30 seconds or so in the game, if I am correctly informed. That's plenty of time to get killed. Tried the same once with a flying Boba Fett shooting at me and I also did not survive. I really doubt that they can reset your char. I don't know what system message you mean though. Do you get that after dieing, too? I have no answer for that - doesn't mean there is none though ;). -

Well I described a recent event I called cheating in post 663. Just out of curiosity, do you consider that proof, after all I checked the recording later, or is it not proof, after all I did not upload the video for you? I can tell you right now, I won't upload it for you to verify. Assuming that you actually accept my own video analysis as proof...that makes one. Now what got me to record me playing Dayz was a hillarious situation on a police station roof and then following up with a Boba Fett flying outside a school window at the second floor of a school window, shooting me from there. Now, also no proof, after all, I started recording after that. But I'm boldly proclaiming, that was not desync, mister. Together - proven for me - that makes two deaths involving a cheater. In February there was a patch with a hotfix for a mouse problem that resulted me practically not being able to turn in a meaningful way. PvP (aiming) was practically my death by default. Since then I killed 12 guys and died 7 deaths total in encounters with other players. That makes 2/7=....wait for it...let's say 29% of my deaths in encounters with cheaters. For alpha that is ok, but it must improve later on. Now, do you accept those two incidents as cheaters being in DayZ or do you discount them because you did not see the proof yourself? Also think about the fact that those 5 other deaths are not "proven" legit either, how should I know, if there was a cheat active? Let's look at this the other way: What do you think is the probability that someone killed by a cheater even realises that it was a cheater? Not even saying that people are stupid, but going back to my case in post 663, if I had not recorded the game AND the other guy would not have been the lousiest shot I have ever seen in DayZ, which resulted in me even being alive long enough to record his wonderously speedy movements, I would have accepted that as a clean kill. But I don't know yet, if you consider that a proven case or a made up story by me. Please elaborate for me to better understand exactly what you need as proof. Or maybe even better, what others should consider proof that they were killed by a cheater, although that might again not be enough for you... . But as I said, I won't start uploading videos just for you to have proof. To actually supply proof here is not that easy, how many people even record their gameplay? Concerning BEdev-Sable, I'm quite happy that he is here and shows interest in the situation, thanks for that! Actually I have a question here: Assuming there will be sanity checks to find speed hacks or people flying around, will those detected be banned as if they were caught by you? I guess one might argue that server logs are not hard enough proof, they might be manipulated by admins, .... . EDIT: Forgot to mention that I consider speedhacks and people flying around something that should be solved through server side sanity checks, not BE. That's what the two incidents I had were. -

No, I wish there would be better patch notes, more stable updates, .... all those funny little things that make us happy and are inconvenient for the devs ;). But I am satisfied with the progress of the game. When I look and play experimental, there are some biggies worked on right now of which for me the most important ones I think are guaranteed messaging and mouse input. Personally I think guaranteed messaging - if it works - is a step that is neccessary before really taking care of desync, pressing hotkeys multiple times, more responsive zeds and inventories, ... all those things probably are tied to desync in some way or the other. And while that is being worked on, I see content being added at the same time. Zeds start to actually run through doors, up stairs, loot spawning is being worked on, ... . Two months ago I had to wait forever when dropping an item on the ground for it to appear, I was able to do a 360 turn in 5 seconds, if I was lucky, rubberbanding was way worse, ... . Currently I only play experimental, because in stable my graphics are jerking really bad when turning, even when running. That was not the case when the last stable release came out. It's certainly not great, but already gone again on experimental. And it also shows that there are server-side things being worked on even in stable. Even when you don't have to download a new client version. I think zed pathfinding for example also was started after the last stable release, for example. Currently I have the feeling that zed behaviour generally is worked on quite a bit. But they keep lagging after the client so running circles is still a valid strategy against them. My biggest worry about ingame things is actually melee and zeds. My biggest other worry is hackers, but as currently there are many new things implemented, a lot of holes are expected to be open. Is 64bit server support there yet? Better multithreading? Those two things should give a lot of additional power for server-side sanity checks and including more calculations onto the server and therefore out of the reach of hackers. There are simply so many things under construction now, and many of them therefore are not really working great, that's what alpha is about. And all problems combined may not be funny when you are playing. And it will not get better while new things are introduced, which will be for some time. You add something and that breaks something, then you have to fix that again. And when you are unlucky, your fix will destroy something else alltogether. I theory that should not happen that often and is a symptom of badly structured software, but I've seen that in reality on practically every software project that takes more than just a few hours to "simply write down". I see progress. Now if I saw no progress on all those little fronts that would worry me greatly. Will all those little things fall together perfectly in the end? I don't know. But I'm happy with the speed of that progress. -

I am not at all disappointed in the progress made since I play (about 2.5 months). I thought about getting Arma2 and the DLCs in the Steam Sale just days ago and after watching quite a lot of youtube vids about the mod and decided against it. It makes no sense to complain about not working "Core Essentials" being a problem while other things ("unnecessary garbage") are added. They are not related at all. Things that don't depend on each other are worked on simultaneously. That's how you use bigger numbers of developers, give them different problems. Not at all how you think it should be done "correctly" as far as I am concerned. The very thought of the wasted overhead should all devs concentrate on one problem at a time and then doing the next is ludicrous. There is such a thing as too many people working on a problem, especially in software development, where you have to spend tremendous amounts of time to understand the problem and its context in the existing code before you actually change something. All in all, I disagree with your assessment of the current situation. That does not mean the product will be wonderful at the end, there is a long way to go, but your reasoning is just not sound as far as I am concerned. -

bauertschi replied to RadikulRAM's topic in General Discussion
Everything on that front is good, but banning IPs is only a limited thing when they are given dynamically. The cheaters also don't loose the game and an admin has to oversee all that and spend time. Ignorant me thinks that all the listed hacks CAN be done through sanity checks on server side resulting in more permanent removal of cheaters, if the relevant infos are sent to the server (inventory, shots fired, reloads, health, position...). Yes it takes processing power, but exactly how many bullets are shot every second on a server, for example? Not really all that many, and the server doesn't even have to do all checks immediatelly. And from the positions of the players at the time, it should be able to check, if the victim could even have been hit. Checking positions against speed hacks is already a lot more, but I can't imagine that really eating so many resources either. It's also not neccessary to check everyone all the time for positions. Just check maybe 3 people for 10 seconds then move on to the next. If someone suspicious is found, watch him for an extended period of time to be sure and then good buy. Statistics tell us, that the cheaters will be caught. Maybe I oversimplify things here now, but sanity checks should be able to manage most server-client updated things. ESP or aimbots or such purely client sided stuff to help the player in his game is a complete other thing. There is for example Punkbuster screenshots (http://www.pbbans.com/mbi-banned-pbss-list.html), but hackers try to exclude their ESP overlay from that, kind of like the mumble chat overlay is not recorded with Open Broadcaster Software, it's not really part of the game, just shown above it. Then I guess you can scan the client memory for known cheats, ... and, well what the hell do I know...and the discussion about invasion of privacy is already here at that point, too. The problem is that I don't see how third pary software can take care of purely client side cheats, unless you use a client side executed software that checks for fishy things and needs to be executed if you want to join a server protected by it - BE and Punkbuster do exactly that, right? What would a cheater even want more than having graphically highlighted players and loot in a game like dayz? Maybe even throw an aimbot in... . Things like magazine hacks are somehow just convenience things, when you know where the loot is and where the other players are. A Battlefield Deathmatch is way less destroyed with some ESP cheater. Maybe BEdev-Sable can say more on that topic or correct mistakes I might have made in this post. And now I'll read that: http://www.battleye.com/info.html and probably some more. -

bauertschi replied to RadikulRAM's topic in General Discussion
Well there is cheaters and then there is cheaters. A lot of funky deaths are caused by desync, I totally believe that. But then there are times when coinidents pile up and a closer look reveales that you actually did not get killed by a really great tactically moving guy, but in fact a cheater... I was at the single prison in the woods north of the nwaf tenttown. Just healing up after almost not surviving the former. I go out of the prison, look right, and left and go for left. That's just a few meters, I get shot in the back, go around the corner, look back with my mosin and see the guy running for it. At that point I thought, "hey, he's fast". Now looking at the video frame by frame, I see that he was running crouched, took like 600 ms for a tour that I think, should not have been possible in that time. I chase after him, look around corners, don't see anything again. Out of the wall (I think that should be west) I check both sides, run right and just after that get shot at again from behind twice, both misses. I go for the woods to get some distance, go west to about where the deer stand should be (didn't see it), after all I have a mosin with psu, so that seemed like a smart move. I finally see him, he was crouching in a bush. I start aiming. Here it get's really dubious. My aiming takes pretty much exactly 1 sec, I had to move out of the tree. Watching the recording I now see that he turns and runs just as my crosshair goes over his body. That really makes me wonder, I never thought that something like indication of someone aiming at one is possible. I still think it is a coincident, but for those with more experience with hacks, is it possible that a hack "sees" me aiming at him? Maybe just something basic that analizes the direction other players are looking. Having the direction I look would explain that he always got me from behind...or that's just an advantage of looking from further away combined with a speed hack. At that point it also gets clear that he is cheating. Speedhack. Desync as I know it resets the position of the player. Of course there are those that will now say that the server was lagging and just catching up. But when the server lags, I have seen people continuing to run in the direction they were going, I have seen people standing around with no movement, ... . This guy was always slightly moving in different directions, turning, looking a little bit around and then he put in the turbo and moved like the Flash. Without watching frame after frame, I did not even see him, he was so fast. Ingame at that point I thought he was repositioning and I had desync. At the end he flanked me in a really wide circle around the open field west of the prison in time I don't think is doable even when sprinting without a weapon. The distance basically yes, but getting so far behind me, no. I was once again being shot at from behind. After moving and trying to spot him, I finally see him for a fraction of a second, before going down with broken bones. Now the guy that killed me, MIGHT just have been a second player, the video is too bad, to actually say it with certainty. But the speedhack before was pretty clear to me. Finally I die to what sounded like multiple shots squeezed together really closely. Reminded me of the video I saw with a cheater taking down a wall with a sawed off shotgun. The real problem is that ingame, I was explaining that all away with a good and lucky opponent - lucky because of how he first got the drop on me, desync was to his advantage,... . Good in how he continued to outmaneuver me. But the hindsight and frame by frame analysis of my video made it pretty clear to me, that I was up against a cheater. And that is what I actually find depressing. Being killed by a flying Boba Fett is one thing, but cheaters that just give themselves an extra edge during combat are unnerving. You never know, if someone was just better than you or if your opponent had additional non legit help. Now mind you, I have still a lot of things to getter with ingame. Killing me is not proof of being a world class player. Now can I be absolute certain that it was a cheater? No. How could I? Not possible due to me not having the godly absolute mind and knowledge of all technical things involved including the client and server code. But even taking into account desync and other problems, I am convinced it was a cheater. Very much so. -

Well I just got sniped at with a small calibre at the nwaf tenttown, my strong guess is m4. I went behind cover, got lag-shot twice more after going down and went unconscious. Came back after about 20 seconds and ran for it. The funny thing is that I found not a single m4 in the tents, plenty of attachments, and at the last two tents, I all of a sudden found empty m4 mags. That got me really worried after not seeing a single soul since Krasnostav. And bam, 10 seconds later...I guess the guy was happy like a unicorn, though, so that's all right :). I so love getting shot at and pulling through, so I was also happy, even though my stuff was mostly ruined. -
Actually I think I read here somewhere that somebody threw a hammer at a zed and the hit indicator showed. Tried it with a wrench yesterday, but I missed. It's actually harder than you think, when you are doing circles around a zed. Just collect items to throw and try it. If nothing happens, consider it aiming practice ;). Edit: Maybe it does work with weapons and not with other things like books or so...

Actually something really similar just happened to me repeatedly that I had not seen before: Drink or eat something that is lieing around, not in the inventory. The char takes the item, and then it just pops back to the desk of floor while the char is consuming it. Then, after some time, it finally manages to actually disappear from the vicinity. But as everything was laggy at the time, I simply thought it was desync. Did not happen after switching servers. The new server was way less laggy. But you have it the other way around at the end though. -

I drank and filled my canteen in a lake about two hours ago. Played hardcore (so maybe first person is the trick) and experimental. I currently cannot use my hotkey number 2 - I guess I should have tested others, but my close quarter weapon (sawed of shotgun or pistol) is always on 2 and putting it on something else would probably get me shot while I pull out a pipsi instead of the gun under duress. Or whatever else the system puts into slot 2. That is actually something I would really like: NO autosetting hotkeys to stuff you just find. Or even better, the option to disable autoequipping things for those that don't like it. But as I'm writing this, it's probably in the menu and I'm just too stupid to have found it. The problem is that the gun (tested with FNX and sawed off shotgun) is equipped and immediatelly put away again. It practically never stays in the hand. Did cost me my life in a police station. The guy watched me fumble with my pistol for about two seconds until he decided to put me out of my misery. Hotkeys 1, 3 and 5 with SKS, several melee weapons and canteen worked fine btw. Besides that I got some hours night gaming, impressions: - don't use a light, you will get shot - well the others were, I was watching (not shooting). - people are even more trigger happy than during the day, probably because of bad sight. - I was able to gear up quite nicely twice in svetlo, even though it was overflowing with fresh spawns. And being in Svetlo is a whole thing all together. I lost server connections a few times, died twice, and only ever got svetlo spawns. And with so many people running around there, I guess I'm not the only one. When will the "cancel action" option be implemented? A guy with a shotgun found me while I was eating. I saw him (and could have shot him) at least 5 seconds, before he saw me and killed me. That's frustrating. -

+1 for piano houses, no bolts. Is this thread now running parallel to http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/186509-new-experimental/page-11 ? Should they be merged? I really don't know if high pop servers are my thing. I have visited the neaf twice now, met someone to kill the first time and now I met a group of five. I heard shooting in the east prison while I was running for the door, a looted corpse was lieing on the outside stairs. I went inside, killed three with my mosin, but the other two got the drop on me. Can you even go to airfields on high pop without meeting people there? I guess it's good for my Kill/Death ratio, but playing lone wolf might be somehow getting stupid when going for military areas. Crossbow experience: The remaining two (might have been more upstairs) killed me in coop, the first putting an crossbow bolt into me, the second one killed me with an SKS. Now the crossbow did not hurt so much really. I guess I did not get shot at my ballistic helmet, because I probably at least should have gone unconscious then. Besides that I was only wearing a ruined hoody and pants. The bolt did get me grey, but really not that badly. And it was close quarters. Can someone with experience shooting it write, how long reloading a bolt takes? I would guess, at least as long as a mosin. If it takes as long and a close range shot does not take out a player, running around with a crossbow might just be begging for death. Ok, it is silent, but still. I did expect it to do more damage. One last thing: Why does pvp always result in people calling me a mother******? I was just about to congratulate the remaining two for how they managed to get the drop on me, especially as coordinated as they did (might have been luck though), and what do I get? A nice and warm "Eat s***, mother******!" Now I'm not really sensible and start crying, but really. I've been called that (or the german equicalent) practically every time after a shootout, even when I was the only victim... .
