Are snipers the most harmless thing in DayZ?

I was tempted all day long, and it keeps itching. Ok, I'm doing a Barney Stinson: "Challenge accepted!" I propose a window of opportunity, let's say 1 or 2 hours (so you won't know who I am) where I will move through a before agreed upon location. I propose the neaf with 20ish ppl on a hardcore for the following reasons: - 20 players on a server in hardcore in my experience means that there is enough traffic at the neaf so you would not simply lie down in the trees at the west prison road just 15 m next to the door. There is practically someone running around every few minutes. At the same time I have to be careful and could not simply sprint the whole time with no gun out. It forces me to play as I actually do. - more than 20 ppl currently mean that I (it seems not everyone else) have extremely bad lag when switching weapons, I died several times now, because I could not take a gun out. Even if it were to run smoothly, I would not lone wolf the neaf on a full server, I would hunt looters instead. - A full server would also increase the chances of my demise before you can kill me, that's not the plan. - The fact that it is possible to look over walls, around corners, over hills,...without being seen on regular, it turns my stomach - On regular playing with the crowd we were alone for more than half an hour at the neaf last time on a stuffed server. It was also unlooted after more than one hour. It seems like players can not even be bathered to run to the neaf any more. I really hate regular more and more, for more and more reasons it seems. - you should find a good position to kill me at the neaf from whatever distance you prefer. I don't demand 800m, but as a proof of concept, it probably should be at least 300 or 400 , I think. - the nwaf is too big. I would never just run through everything there. If I think it is unsafe to go somewhere, I simply skip it. There are areas there I never visit. We might even miss each other completely. You will definitely see me at the neaf... . - the nwaf is either empty of other players and I could sprint way more than I usually would, after all I know you are out there, or - there is some bad ass squad at the nwaf that kills me - with my luck before you had your chance. - balota, hm, a possibility. But I don't think it has the same possibilities for long range engagement as the neaf. Too many small corners, some woods that are great for sniping but short distance. There are the big appartment builings of course (is it Dubky?), but all in all again too many chances to miss each other or only small windows of opportunity might occur. Especially as we specifically want long range. I think I could make it way harder or even impossible - there is one ace up my sleeve I won't disclose beforehand... Rules: - a minimum distance as proposed above should exist, you may hunt me down, if you decide to do so, but your first action must be a long range shot. - Only you, not 10 of your friends additionally. I'll also be alone. - I loot the neaf as I normally would, no extra anti sniper movements or so - you would of course have to trust me on that. That does of course include the fact that I spot the area before I charge in like an idiot. If I find you I may just decide to come for you instead. Or I might go through with the looting, who knows. Even if I spot a sniper, I won't know for sure it is you after all... . An additional incentive for you to accept: I record all my DayZ gaming, so you get to see your handywork from my perspective. Of course I propose that you also record your game, but I don't demand it. As I wrote in the original post, I am not a PvP god. But it's an interesting starting constellation, something new. And one should take from DayZ all it offers, even if it means dieing. Let's call it the "bautschi-anothercynicalbrit situation". Even writing this challenge and thinking about the rules was already fun :)

Are snipers the most harmless thing in DayZ?

I died three times through zeds, if I remember correctly. First with my first life in DayZ, then there were two onehit deaths when I was completely healthy, well fed and watered. But I get where you're coming from. To be fair though, they are quite dangerous when they show other players your location. That also got me killed, when I exited a hangar on the nwaf and two ppl were already waiting aiming at the exit. Just before that two zeds crossed the af chasing after me...

That is the second time I really had to laugh here today! What is going on? Usually I get grumpy? Did you ppl change your diet?

That's what I currently like about the Blaze. Ok, I only shot once at someone, probably about 70 meters, but because the game lags so much, I could put two bullets in his back, before he fell down. Well, or she, I don't discriminate that way here. Of course you need snaploaders, but I think running around with a Blaze and two or three snaploaders is something I might actually try. It's just that Mosins are not uncommon and I usually throw the Blaze out when I find one, after all I just might get a LRS later...

    Weapon accuracies

That I do believe. But getting the same with an ACOG @300m? At that point it's simply not only about aiming any more. Dispersion (however it may be calculated) is reality there. With iron sights it actually starts to really suck. Btw, I can only talk about the G3 with 7.62 Nato ammo here with personal experience, but according to "The Practial Range of Small Arms" the G3 should have less dispersion than an M16 at 300m.
  7. bauertschi

    Weapon accuracies

First, those numbers can still be changed later on when balancing is worked on. And that is already the biggest problem - the altar of gameplay and balancing, where reality goes through the window so gamers can have their fun. Things like the overpowered attachment things are probably added so ppl can spend more time looking for stuff and do a dance, when they actually find an MP handguard. I could also ask, why a PU can be attached to a Mosin, look at this: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mosin_Nagant_series_of_rifles.jpg Do you see the difference between the Mosin with the PU and the others? When manifactured, the better Mosins were taken away and modified to allow a PU to be mounted. The thing (can't find the englisch word) that is used to reload would not completely open on the standard Mosin, if a PU was mounted. So why do we not have regular Mosins ingame and one out of 10 is a sniper Mosin that allows a PU? I don't know what we will get in the end, but I would hazzard a guess that gameplay and balancing will play a bigger role in figures like dispersion than reality.

    Weapon accuracies

I would guess the same way as in my first link in post 94: http://www.krtraining.com/KRTraining/Archive/PracticalRangeSmallArms.pdf Or close to it, there are probably other definitions with similar results. Otherwise they would probably use a different term.

    Weapon accuracies

Great, lets start with laughing at the guy we disagree with followed up by making assumptions in a way that suggest one's own knowledge is supperior. That didn't even impress, when I was in my first week of basic training in our Army. Then let's take a break and read something: http://www.krtraining.com/KRTraining/Archive/PracticalRangeSmallArms.pdf Explaines a lot about things discussed here including the question how dispersion is to be interpreted. Important here: Iron sights are used. The pdf also contains numbers for the AK-47 and the M16 - I put a leg out there and simply take the M16 numbers, although M4A1 dispersion is higher, an obvious reason is the shorter barrel resulting in lower muzzle velocity. I don't know about the keyholes you have, but I doubt it. Or is it a slang term I don't know? Feel free to link me some uncut video of someone showing that, where manipulation to troll ppl is obviously not the case. More importantly, I think you did not really read the second paragraph of Irish there. Let me quote him here for you: "...Now if this is a constant value and every bullet is dispersed 6" well, then that is not good. But if its on a random value that this happens and not every single bullet has a rule of being dispersed by the amount then things are fine...." I'm not completely sure how he meant that, but it shows clearly that he disagrees with the 6'' as a general rule for "Bullets Gone Wild - the DayZ Edition". Maybe some variation for random bullets simulating ammo variations like less gun powder, projectile shape...? I don't know... I think you are underselling the AK and overselling the M4, but that's a normal thing when ppl compare their own things with stuff others have. A comparison is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_the_AK-47_and_M16 - ok, it's the M16 again, but let's just take those numbers. Most interesting for us is probably the section "Range and Accuracy". Please read the text from source 144, actually here is the relevant part concerning the AK: "...At 300 meters, expert shooters at prone or bench rest positions had difficulty putting ten consecutive rounds on target. The testers then had the weapons fired from a cradle by a machine, which removed human error. At 300 meters, the ten-rounds group fired in this manner had a minimum dispersion of 17.5 inches, compared to the 12.6 inches with an M-16..." The way you write it sounds to me like "An AK is acurate to 300-450 m compared to 800m with the m4 - well, ok, the m4 being used by an expert and with ACOG, didn't say anything about an expert fireing the AK or a good scope, but hey, who cares." Even with the best shooter and scope, how big is a 10 shot grouping you can get over 800m? What does "can hold it's own" mean in that context? You actually didn't say that the m4 is acurate on 800m, you just use wording that allows you to push the distance of the M4. TBH that sentence is just bs, nothing else. I could argue that Dean Hall was in the Military, but it does not even matter.

I want to thank you all for your answers, some spent really a lot of energy and thought. There seems to be a consens on the fact that a good sniper is a beast. At the same time and at least for the moment it seems that getting killed from far away is not a very common affliction. Maybe the reason is also the influx of new players that still have to learn - not saying that everyone will do so. With so many new players chances of running into a real veteran may simply be rather slim. I am not saying the topic is done, I really enjoyed how many answers I got so fast and how ppl answered in detail. But I must stop giving everyone beans here for answering me, it's getting ridiculous ;) So, carry on and enjoy the game!

What's the current hacking status like in DayZ:SA?

I think the ppl sitting in the neaf prisons are usually not using hacks. They simply sit where no one should be able to.

What's the current hacking status like in DayZ:SA?

I think it's funny how people can even think that. Please just read the whole thread, it should become clear why. If that is too much, please read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanity_testing and think about what it can be used for concerning speed hacks, teleportation, shooting through obsticles, flying, the inventory, ... whatever else that may happen and is synced between server and client. That's the devs' job as far as I know. Then look up ESP - or in your case aimbot.eXe. Again, as far as I know, a prime example of BE's job. Don't know what VAC is doing...

Are snipers the most harmless thing in DayZ?

I simply find the fact that (with one death of mine not 100% confirmed) every single PvP death of mine was from close distance very interesting. I really don't want to suggest changes here, just want to know, how often others die because of snipers compared to "normal" PvP deaths. What do I know, there might even be some SKS specialists out there that go for ranges of about 200 meters in sniper style and like the high fireing rate...well DMR would better describe that, but I would also count it. The wind discussion is interesting for sure, as far as I know there is wind in Arma III for things like smoke, but it does not change ballistics, right?

Are snipers the most harmless thing in DayZ?

I think I read somewhere that the mosin has more spread than (the) sniper rifle(s) in the mod. Is it really still accurate over 1000 m or is it a lottery over that distance? Maybe you can actually answer the (in my group) long debated question, if mosin attachments and LRS conditions actually matter. Once I tried to shot a stationary zed with a badly damaged LRS in about 400m distance and no matter how high or low I aimed, I did not hit it. I actually tested with adjustments from about 2m below it's feet to 2m above its head. Stopped after 20 rounds. Then I had a pristine LRS and shot a zed behind a wall with less than half of its head showing on the first try, the distance being 320m. So I think it matters, but plenty of ppl say, that different conditions are not really implemented yet... .

Are snipers the most harmless thing in DayZ?

I definitely expect that, but either I am quite lucky or there are not really many around. Also I decided to learn that craft and admittedly s*** at it, I especially miss the bullet impacts in the current stable to adjust my shots... . Do you have any idea how often you actually died through a long range attack or got hit and died later because of it compared to other PvP deaths in SA?

Can you access other people's backpacks?

Like everything else, bloodbags can get ruined when shot. I highly recommend storing a bloodbag in your pants, ideally in a container like a protective case or a medbag - if you are shot in the legs, you are less likely to need it compared to being shot in the chest. Well at least we do it that way and everyone simply carries his own blood, no probs with bloodtypes that way. Or you keep more of them spread out.Just make sure to know your bloodtypes or keep track of who's blood is where. That reminds me, I wanted to check if I can use pens to name blood bags...

teamspeak3 overlay worked for first day..

If you are talking about overwolf, I know several ppl that have trouble with it. I simply crashes for me when I start DayZ - or any other game. I deinstalled it and successfully use the teamspeak 3 overlay plugin, the first on this site: http://addons.teamspeak.com/directory/category/overlay.html There are others shown on the site, just try a few, maybe you are lucky. Not really an answer to your question...if you use teamspeak locally just with a few friends, you can also try mumble instead, the integrated overlay is also working for me, and maybe with time positional audio (you hear your buddies from the direction they are ingame) will be added for DayZ.

    About combat logging.

I tried to combat log once, when a guy was flying outside the second floor window of a school and shooting me through the window. My chances would have been better, if I had simply tried to kill him. Instead my char protested the cheating peacefully by doing a sitting blockade. Not my best moment, but rational thought had left my brain and made room for pure panic. I think a lot of combat loggers die quite a lot because they choose not to fight back.

    Item picking up

If vicinity does not work, you can use a trick: A hoodie for example may not show up in vicinity. Now take of your shirt or whatever you wear the hoody would replace. Now you may be able to pick it up directly, because the spot on your char is free. Items like food etc. should always be possible to pick up, if you have enough free space in the inventory. Of course some things are simply too far away... .

    Your first kill

They have nothing to loose and only two hits to your head might already be enough to send you into dreamland. Some even commit suicide or ask to be killed if they want to run back to their body or are unsattisfied with their spawn location. I hate that.
  22. bauertschi

    A few noob questions

I disagree on one thing with the above responses: melee weapons ;) I really like the machete and (if you find one) the combat knife. They are one handed weapons, you can hit faster with them. You can also equip them faster. Aim a little above the heads, watch how the weapons are swung and you will learn to almost always hit the head. You also don't have those highly visible monsters on your back. I also preffer the improvised backpack for that reason (put rope on a burlap sack for a courier bag and again add sticks for the backpack - courier bag must be empty.) Whatever you do, take some time to learn the art of boxing against zeds, you will sooner or later need it against the rabbid bambis that run through the high spawn locations and try to knock out everyone. I know ppl that carry no melee weappon at all and only use fists.

What's the current hacking status like in DayZ:SA?

And as far as I am concerned, that is not BE's problem at all. Teleporting is a prime example of something that can be detected using server side sanity checks. That is exactly what can be done on BI's side. While possible to check all players movement all the time on the server, it might take up too many resources. But it is still possible to track players randomly on the server side and when someone's positions seem suspiscious, mark him as such (for all servers in the hive) and look closer and for extended periods of time to make sure it was not a fluke before banning the player. If you do that, all client side teleport hacks that exist and will exist are done with without the need to always update BE with the new hacks. I may be overlooking something here, I am not an anti cheat expert, but I'm quite certain that I know enough to highlight this as a prime example of what is actually BI's job and not BE's.

What's the current hacking status like in DayZ:SA?

They are saying ... who is they? Can you provide a link please? All kind of security related software is open source. Including complete linux distributions. That does not mean it is broken by default, just because ppl know the source code. I don't think it changes a lot in the long run, security wholes are either there or not. If they are there, chances are, they will be found in time. Security through obscurity is not really any security at all imho. In the short run (well not so short, really) this will probably increase hack numbers and possibilities depending on what exactly they got. I also don't know if they swiped everything. In the long run, I don't know how this will influence hacks. If this results in more devs being assigned to securing the game after beta, it might even be good. But that is all speculation about the business strategies of BI and BE... . Either way, don't panik and eat some beans. Or even better, eat peaches.

    New zombies, Soon?

One shot anywhere is worth mentioning, but really, the FNX is a absolutely supreme gun, so that does not say so much. Ask the dude that was waiting in the neaf east prison crouching behind closed doors with his m4. He got off 3 shots on my legs (of course he was aiming too low as always) and I got off one shot from my FNX directly into his nose. I got up again after about 10s, he - well - not so much. Had a similar experience with an SKS guy hiding in a barack's shower stall waiting for me to finish looting the rooms. Same result, only I was supprised and used 14 bullets... :). The speed at wich you can fire the FNX precisely is amazing, I consider it the best weapon indoors, forget m4s and the rest. Now one shot anywhere with the Amphibia, that does not work... Interesting was that the FNX shots with a silencer did not draw more zeds, so silencers seem to work for zeds, even if we hear the shots.
