Technical question, how can you prevent ppl from changing gamma and brightness in the driver? If it gives better spotting abilities, ppl will continue doing that. What about changing it on the monitor? I don't see how this will change. At that point we could also start about ppl having better monitors than others and seeing more. Not trying to troll here, but what to do? Don't know how a rendered night setting would look like that ppl would not try to change for better visibility.

I don't know if the idea is forced by the community, have never heard anyone proclaiming we need it. I see two main aspects, 1st the new possibilities and 2nd the once again shrinking map. Short things first, with servers with 80+ ppl, just to say a number, and parts of the map getting taken out unless u have a gas mask, I am not sure, where exactly one should build his bases. But I have always worried about too many ppl on servers generally, in my mind 40 or 50 is plenty, but hey. The thing with new possibilities depends on exactly what is in those areas. Maybe some exclusive loot that is needed in bases somewhere, don't aks me what exactly :). Now if ppl need to get that "loot" in certain intervals, in order to get some gimmick in their bases, why not, something else to do. The only thing that comes to mind now is some kind of chemical lighting or power device. What's the idea for supporting camps (like from the "general idea" presentation of hicks) with electricity anyways? Using a truck as a generator and refueling till eternity? Not saying my ideas here are original at all, but everything that allows or forces you to do more in the game takes time away from putting bullets into ppls heads. And thinking of pvp ... sorry ... it would be interesting for lone wolf sniper dudes to use such an area as a relatively safe area to run from the ppl they missed, hoping they can't follow without circling around :). Environment can always be used. After all there was a thread some time ago where ppl were proclaiming what a great idea a huge mountain would be, one you need extremely warm clothing and maybe even oxigen tanks to climb iirc. All in all I think contaminated areas could enrich the game. Not that they will. Certainly not, if the devs don't have better ideas about them than I do.

Or you simply turn off postprocessing. I don't know about the current situation but a year ago a grey screen indicated blood loss (obviously still does) and a blurry screen indicated health loss. That can be turned off by disabling postprocessing. Now some purists say that you should not deactivate a feature, but I hate that feature: 1. It's bugged (or not working correctly), even when at full health the screen will be less blury without postprocessing (or was a year ago). 2. Those who leave it on are at a great disadvantage to those who deactivate it. But even if it were forced, I would hate it. You get shot, the assailant knows where you are, you don't know where he is and you can find him with a blurred vision ... in terms if gameplay I don't like giving the attacker even better ods as he already has at that point. Tbh kill at all costs is fine with me. I never kill anyone who has no gun, unless he attacks, but I don't mind it.

Yeah, you downloaded all that, but you do not start Arma 2 with all those mods just because you downloaded that. Uninstall ALL mods but the normal DayZ, then install DayZ Launcher, install the mods from there and then start the game from DayZ Launcher and see if it works. ONLY then can you start playing around with starting the Mod(s) more directly, however you want. For information about starting Arma 2 with mods through startup parameters you can look at https://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Arma2:_Startup_Parameters But first try to get things running with DayZ Launcher. It is obvious that you do not start the game with the mods enabled. Having them installed is not enough.

I guess they would have to enlarge the map quite a bit more than now for that ... such mountains take a lot of space on their base. I basically look at the tradeoff .... gettint mountains in = work, bigger map, parts or the map reserved for "only" those mountains (including those bases) as a new gimik. Now the question, how much would the game really improve by those additions? Imo i doubt it is worth the drawbacks, but that is just me. Concerning hypothermia, I think I read somewhere that it is currently already getting colder when you go up mountains, also there is more wind ... please do not ask for sources here or spread this as hard facts, just think I read it somewhere.

Ok, now this may have several reasons ... 1. Do you have Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead installed? 2. Do you get that with every Server or only one or a few? AND: Exactly what mod are you trying to run? I personally did not make the best experiences with installing the mod itself through steam. To be honest, getting Arma 2 DayZ mod stuff running is not always a walk in the park. I would advise to install Arma 2 and Operation Arrowhead through steam, then install DayZ Launcher and get the mod from there. Then also install whatever mods you want to use and start the game out of the server browser in DayZ Launcher. Now what annoys me about DayZ launcher is that it always uses admin rights. You can just accept that or use your own startup scripts or whatever you want, when the game works, but FIRST you have to get it running. And for most ppl I would claim using DayZ Launcher is the easiest way to get the game running. VERY IMPORTANT: After installing Operation Arrowhead, you need to start the game as such. Starting Operation Arrowhead will do some registering stuff with the game, its license or something like that. Without starting Operation Arrowhead once the mod will not be able to use its files. EDIT: Have not done that myself for about 5 months or so, so some information might be not up to date, but it should be close, feel free to ask more in this thread, I'll watch it for updates. Always nice to see ppl still going into DayZ mod, it's worth it!

How to play DayZ when there are no servers within 170 ping?
bauertschi replied to sorenackerman's topic in New Player Discussion
Arma / DayZ are not as dependant on low ping as other games, while not ideal there really is no problem playing playing on 200ms ping servers either. It is not the best solution, but there are ppl playing ranked Battle Royale (Arma 3 mod) from the US on European servers with a ping close to 200ms, and they manage to win. 200ms ping is definitely better than playing solo on some "self-made" server. Also keep in mind that most of the lag/desync etc has nothing to do with ping currently, it is the game. -
Yeah, but then still I would preffer a system that does not require you going into the szene-breaking, out of the game ripping inventory. When putting ammo on a hotkey, only allow the easily accessable pockets, even stuff like "the ammo is damaged" with options to take the next stack (if there is one in an easily accessable place) or sort out ammo (which could take some time and drop like 1 good bullet in your hand every second or so until you have enough) would be prefferable imo...thinking about the ever prominent mouse wheel there ;). Or maybe damaged ammo will take the same time as undamaged and simply be dropped instead of put in the gun... . Anything that does not require ripping you out if the game and leaves you responsive is better imo. You could even start sprinting away while doing something like sorting ammo and it stops until you stop running or whatever. The system of possible penalties could be extensive, all without getting ripped out of the immersion. Yes, it could also make a lot of work to do stuff like that, but they are doing things like new char movement right now, stuff like that could get included there. Without knowing all the details, I think it would fall into stuff like allowing to interrupt eating or other animations when starting to run...probably somewhere in there ;)

Lol, I did not want to search the forum for that post, but I remember that one and the following discussion. Sorry, but I do not agree that breaking the "cycle of gearing up and engaging in group pvp couples times in a playsession" will make this a not-pvp game. "And most of all it will not be the primary type of playstyle. The statement is about the playstyle that has been predominant and will not be" ... That is about exactly the described gearing up whole groups several times a playsession and engaging in group pvp, so you can die and gear up again. Nothing more and nothing less. Now this is not aimed at you, don't know your thoughts on that, but I have no idea at all how it happened that soooo many ppl came to conclusions like "finally those stupid kos **** will go back to call of duty", "now we will be foced to team up to survive" or "now ppl have to play friendly" or others in that direction. Btw these were not real quotes, just what I remember from a lot of ppl posting. Absolutely everything in his post made me happy, but not one second did it make me think that the most likely reason for my future "You are dead" screens will be anything but a bullet fired by some other player. I just don't read that from his post, I know others disagree. Either way, I got a clear statement from Eugen linked in the post from above ( http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/224764-electro-without-zombies/#entry2260458 ). Now the devs have to actually achieve that. And maybe change their advertisement a bit accordingly :D EDIT: you edited your post after I quoted, soo ... concerning trailers, there is a point where advertisement and reality differ to much to be acceptable. If a company makes some great commercial about a wonderful new juice and you buy it and don't like it fine. But they cannot simply give you milk and say, "Hey, that was just a commercial!". Imo their site and advertisement certainly suggest a heavy pvp focus in the game, the "running simulator" aspects not being shown does not change that. I think they should really change that, if they really aim for the "not pvp game".

Ahh, you know, one of the first mods will just remove zeds completely, there's no harm in ppl playing that way, if they want to.
-
Running speed will get nerfed iirc, but 5km/h is fast paced walking. PVE is hard for freshies, but easy after a while, when you get the experience. As there is no leveling of zeds or whatever, it will always become easier when you get geared, or a bambie could never even hope to survive. I just don't see how you can make PVE really hard for geared players while allowing survival for ungeared ones. Just how hard can PVE get while still allowing inexperienced players to actually learn the game and get better? Imo there is only one possible outcome, in the end experienced (and somewhat skilled) players will mostly die to other players if they manage to get some gear. Maybe not exclusively, but mostly. Or maybe some areas will be higher risk and ppl go there... . Anything else would just prevent new players from starting DayZ. And the devs do not want that, don't know who could even want that. BUT whoever wants to can surely play on a server with less loot and more zeds...maybe with tweaked energy / hydration consumption, ... and all the goodies that will be allowed to be changed in private shards...whatever that will all entail :) Concerning the original question, the temperature thing is not really too hard to grasp, currently you only get sick, if you really want to, ... it's not too bad really. No one forces you to eat burnt steaks, you can actually survive pretty easily forever with some remote berry bush. As long as you are healthy, you can even still drink from all the ponds, ... . We will see, how this will end.

YEPP!!! Thank you. Sooooo I guess they are using false advertisement, just my opinion, though :) LOL
-
While I absolutelly disagree with the proposal, I still gotta ask for sources of statements like "DayZ is not a PvP game and the devs don't want it to be, and never did." And please don't quote steam with "gritty survival horror" or whatever they wrote there. Look at the official trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ss1dckHhfI There you have (without scenery): - a dude running around with a gun (twice) - a chainsaw guy with a mask ... I really don't know why we need that, but oh well... - shooting zeds with an m4 - shooting a zed or a dude with a mosin - going against a zed with an axe - execution of several ppl lying on the ground - execution of a kneeling woman - again shooting a zed with a mosin - melee agains another player - m4 action against zeds - BANDAGING - the first survival thing here iirc - stalking though a hallway - drinking water - suicide All in one minute ... maybe I oversaw something. Also look at the slideshow on http://dayz.com/game - discount the pictures with only scenery and then count the automatic weapons and mosins in those "DayZ Features" images. And keep in mind those "friendly" scenes with the prisoners there ... . Either way, that discussion comes up again and again, and I never get any real information about what the devs want besides that they do not want to force a certain playstyle. I am really looking for a source about hard facts here. If they actually said something like that on reddit or some forum and do not want pvp to be a central aspect of the game, then they are using false advertisement imo. If such sources exit, can someone PLEASE link them? Again, not looking for something like "Electro squad pvp will be harder to get" or "it will be hard to survive", but really someone saying "DayZ is not a pvp game" or something like that.

I think it should get implemented and probably won't :). If they don't implement it, it will never be a struggle to get ammo out of the bottom of your bag, it's not like you have to empty it. It is more of a struggle with the inventory system. What I also hate coming into play here is that I cannot order my gear, like put the backpack up above shirt, pants, ... . I do not consider it good gameplay to go into the inventory system and start scrolling with the mouse simply because the ammo is at the bottom. That gets especially ... let's call it strange ... when you have stuff like boots that all of a sudden act as a container ... of a boonie hat with a fishing hook ... or ... you get the picture. The stuff is always somewhere else. Of course I can store ammo at the top and I do so, but even then the shirt is sometimes further up, sometimes further down. That does not simulate a struggle with your pockets or whatever, it simulates you not being able to remember where your nipples are and when you look for your chest pocket you start searching at the belly button... . I might sound quite hateful here, but I really dislike these little minigames. And can anyone tell me exactly why I can put a splint, a rag, or anything really on the hotkeys but not ammo? A while ago there was the same discussion already on this forum, I was proposing a reload key with extremely slow reloading of single bullets. But I like your idea, too. Either way, reloading time with single bullets should take really long. Currently ppl leave sks stripper clips behind because of the space they take up ... they should be really quite worth picking up - if you play with an SKS that is. Ppl want realism, fine ... Irl you can reach into your pants pockets without obscuring your vision and loosing sight of your opponent. You can get the ammo out of there without averting your eyes (ingame going into the inventory). That will not work so great with the backpack...sooo why try to simulate that ingame? New idea, not really thought through, but just spewed out there: - Allow hotkey useage only for items stored in accessable spaces, like hoodies, pants, etc. Force ppl to go into the inventory to acces stuff from the backpack. - Allow reloading of loose ammo (and or mags) directly or through reload button or hotkeys where they are stored Also, when reloading single bullets, you should be able to cancel the action if neccessary, like dropping the remaining bullets on the floor. Or maybe it could work with your hand going to the pants, getting the bullet in, going back to your pants ... . If the reloading is cancelled that way to allow for immediate action, the bullets that were loaded should be in the gun or mag... . Of course that could be taken to really far levels, like reloading while lying down going faster than when running, a 50% chance of dropping a bullet if reloading while running, ... whatever is wanted and depending on how far you want to take it. You see, I really hate getting ripped out of the game by playing the inventory game inside the game :)

The first link (arma 2 combined operations) already includes the operation arrowhead expansion. Be careful not to buy it twice ... the Arma 2 package for the mod is pretty often on sale for like $5. Check if you want Standalone or the mod first ... "the mod" can also mean a lot of different things ... dayz vanilla, epoch, wasteland, dayzero .... many others.
