I have got to be the unluckiest player in DayZ
BeefBacon replied to WilliamTheConqueror's topic in General Discussion
Fuck talking to people. I'm so tired of trying to be friendly only to get shot. Started playing again a few days ago. Died 3 times in as many days. First time I saw a guy way in the distance, so I use my binoculars to see if he's armed after doing the wiggle dance. Headshot. Second time I run into barn unarmed. Shot in the legs. "Why?" I say. He keeps shooting at me until I'm dead, despite the fact that I was unarmed. Third time some shit one-shot punches me in the back of the head. He could have taken my stuff and left me alive, or spoken to me when I woke up. Nope, he just killed me. Goodbye carbine with two mags and scope. Goodbye revolver. I'd love to keep you but I have to give you away to Mike fucking Tyson. So yeah. If I can't avoid players I'm just going to shoot on sight. I'm tired of gearing up only to get killed without even shooting back. In those three lives I didn't fire a weapon once. In future shooting players in the face is going to be my wiggle dance. -
Is this a necropost? It's relevant regardless. I hear a gunfight near Stary. Sounds like a freaking war - can hear an SKS, an AKM, a mosin - the works. I'm in the treeline with my scoped rifle to see what's going on. The fighting stopped a while ago but I occasionally hear a mosin go off, so I'm scanning the opposite treeline to see if I can spot him, and maybe even shoot at him. I hear somebody sprinting behind me so I try to lower my scope and get away from him. One punch to the back of the head and I'm unconscious. 30 seconds later and I'm dead. I had less than a second to react. Presumably this guy died in the fight so gunned it back to Stary, only to find me. One punch. Obviously I should have found a helmet or something, but I wasn't lucky enough to find anything other than a glow in the dark construction helmet, so I stuck with a hat assuming that nobody would be able to get close enough to sock me anyway since I had a gun. I'd be fine if a wrench caused a one-hit KO, or a crowbar, or a baseball bat - but it seems that players spawn with one of the most effective melee weapons in the game. So please... nerf fists. The past couple of days I've died a few times, but each time I made a mistake and, more importantly, the one who killed me had a gun. A freshspawn shouldn't be able to happyslap people into submission.

Say goodbye to you flashlights. (and free batteries)
BeefBacon replied to emuthreat's topic in General Discussion
No can openers. Starting with one, even if it's extremely unlikely, would confer a massive advantage. Spawning with something that can open cans - like a screwdriver, is fine but an actual tin opener would be too powerful. Random clothes would be nice. Should provide no more than 4 inventory slots which would provide a decent variety of starting clothes. Jeans + t-shirt, Canvas pants vs t-shirt, tracksuit, prisoners uniform, etc. Should also be a chance to spawn a hat, and shoes should be random too (within a set of variables). Could also be a small chance to spawn certain special items, like a respirator or a chest holster. -
Everyone plays the game the way they want, so...

I combat logged once. Was, maybe, the second or third character I'd ever had way back in January or February of last year. Was running through a village when somebody started taking pot shots at me. I pussed out, hid in a shed and logged out. Logged back in a few days later and I still had all of my shitty gear and came to the realisation that I had been scared to lose some low-end virtual gear in a videogame. Like it was, what, a mosin with no ammo, a backpack and maybe some food? I also realised that the dude shooting at me must have been disappointed as fuck to carefully make his way through the village only to find an empty shed and a puddle of piss. Not done it since. Dying is a part of the game. It sucks but you learn from it. If logging is how you enjoy the game then good for you I guess, but feel fortunate that not everybody has the same idea of fun as you. -

Cool, I definitely approve. I get to keep my t-shirt and I'm not granted a good pvp weapon as soon as I find a cattle prod or stun baton which are common as mud. Still wouldn't mind random spawn gear, though, just to add a bit of variety. Green shirt green jeans freshspawns is pretty boring. -
Possible improvement for third person and fire fights.

And yet you resort to these arguments. Maybe you should have taken that first year debate class. I'm interested to see what the devs do to fix 3pp exploits. They clearly have it on the agenda so I'm keen to see what they come up with before I start coming up with roundabout ideas. Not allowing 3pp with a weapon drawn isn't the worst idea I've seen, however. It'd certainly stop players from popping round a corner and spamming SKS rounds in 3pp until they hit something. -
What? It's a fucking videogame. Get a grip. I can't see 'zombie mules' becoming a thing. Infected, as they exist currently, don't really suit it. Animal husbandry and literal pack mules I can definitely get behind. Trading animals (or slaughtering or stealing another group's animals) would add an interesting element to the game. I'd love to see bred traits so you could make a perfect animal. Perhaps pig A yields more meat while pig B moves faster. Breed them together and you have a fat pig on rollerskates. Equally undesirable traits could exist, including things like diseases which can infect both animals and players. Such a system might encourage larger groups to settle down and trade. Of course there's nothing stopping groups from straight-up raiding, but a really in-depth animal husbandry system would be really cool for those that are interested in creating bases and want a goal besides 'build a really high wall'.

Nobody is stopping you from spouting your opinion. They're just ridiculing you, and rightly so since you have no idea what you're talking about. I'm not a game dev. I've dabbled in mods and the work I do means I interact with a lot of game devs and they often tell me what processes they go through when making games (I like to be friendly with my clients, plus I do have a genuine interest) but I don't create games myself. However, I have a pretty basic understanding of the passes that development goes through and things like optimisation usually come at the end. You, however, are not privy to this information because the notion of 'releasing' a game mid-development is relatively new. People are used to having a game be announced and then have it magically appear a few months later. But I do agree. It isn't necessary that you thank or congratulate the devs as you've already given them their money. However, it's a nice thing to do. Even after I'm paid it's nice when a client says "you did a really good job". It's not necessary, it's just nice to receive validation and to know that my work is to a high standard. You also have to realise that the developers, most likely, probably quite like making games. The money is a big factor, sure, but I daresay that these guys love what they do. I don't doubt that knowing that they've made (or are making) a game that people enjoy forms the basis of why they make games in the first place.

If 3pp can be fixed to make things like wallpeeking impossible, then I'd probably totally drop 1pp. I like being able to see my character, but I'm not a wee babby who needs to peek over walls to keep my precious loot. I'm certainly not one of these tools who claims 'greater awareness' or 'motion sickness' or some such nonsense when in 3pp. I can't get my head around people who cling onto 3pp and claim that it has nothing to do with wall peeking. Just admit that you use an exploit. It's okay. However, as someone who thinks that 3pp was a mistake... actually probably the biggest mistake the devs have made since it seems to be the antithesis to authenticity and realism but there's no chance it'll ever be removed... I don't think that a single stable release should be forced 1pp. I don't think it'd do anything. It'd just fill the forum up with a bunch of whining 13 year-old Twitch streamers complaining that they can't get the drop on freshspawns. It would be unlikely to persuade anyone to play 1pp. So yeah. The best course of action would be to do something that means that wall peeking and other exploits associated with 3pp are impossible; that way everybody wins.

So? Just because it's inefficient that doesn't mean it shouldn't be included. If somebody wants to waste inventory space carrying the necessary materials to make a gun trap then why not let them? If somebody wants to sacrifice a weapon to make a trap why not let them? Your argument seems to depend on "well I wouldn't do it". We already have bear traps. I see no reason why we shouldn't be able to set up a gun trap. I'd actually like to be able to use any gun, including pistols and crossbows. You should be able to chamber a round. If it's a fully automatic weapon then you should also be able to attach a mag for the weapon to fire until it's empty. Obviously this would be a massive waste of ammunition, but options are always nice. Being able to chamber rounds also means we can use a stripped-down AK74 or a magazine-less M1911 as traps as well, making discarded weapons useful to some degree. It's worth mentioning that this gun trap idea has been mentioned before in a couple of trap-related threads, but eh.

Sling shots/handcannon and metallic projectiles suggestions
BeefBacon replied to Zboub le météor's topic in Suggestions
I can't see a slingshot doing very much damage - at least not one cobbled together from an underwear waistband and a stick. A sling like those used in ancient warfare alongside the bow I could see working, however. It'd do at least as much damage as the bow and would be far easier to craft (perhaps only requiring rags or a rope) but would be difficult to aim properly, perhaps following a mechanic similar to the bow where the only way to be accurate is to time the animation and to fire within a small window. I like the idea of getting metal projectiles from car wrecks. Also wouldn't mind being able to get a basic knife from car wrecks - sort of like you can from foraging for stones - so finding a shard of metal or glass or something similar. Would just be an alternative way to find basic tools. Another post suggested craftable ammo. I like that. I think that only certain ammo types should be craftable (shotgun shells, for example). I don't think that post explored taking apart ammunition to make other things, though, which is something that'd be pretty cool. Perhaps the powder from 10 shotgun shells could make a pipe bomb when mixed with, I don't know, bleach and lime - or something simpler like a small bomb that does little to no damage but which can distract zombies and players. Would give value to ammo that you find but don't need. Expanding on that, shotgun shells should be the only ammo type you can disassemble in the field. Ammo with metal casings should require a workshop (which is incoming, I think). I think I like the handcannon. Initially I thought it'd just mean freshspawns all have guns, but then I reasoned that you don't see freshspawns running around with bows so there's not really much likelihood of them all carrying handcannons. I like the idea of being able to upgrade handcannons (somehow) to fire conventional ammunition, albeit extremely inaccurately. It should also have a very low durability, as I imagine a lead pipe would probably get ruined pretty quickly. -
I like it. Honestly when I saw the title of the thread I assumed it was going to be "let us choose where we spawn" which would have been horrible. But yeah, reliably spreading freshspawns along the coast would be great. I wouldn't mind the devs experimenting with scattered spawns all over Chernarus rather than just on the coast, just to see what impact it has on gameplay. Would be the time to do it after all.

I'm in favour of a slight zoom. I know a lot of people can't play at very high resolutions, so being able to zoom in a little bit might better simulate the resolution of the eye. Perhaps somehow link the amount you can zoom to the set resolution. Those who play on a low resolution should be able to zoom in slightly further than those who play with a high resolution - just to level the playing field in terms of seeing distant objects.

Okay but only if I can make lampshades out of human skin; I have to light my flesh castle somehow.

A hold-to-interact action button, and apple trees.

Yup. Planned as far as I know. Seem to recall a dev saying we won't see this for a few more months yet, though. -
Soft skill - Crafting and re-using ammo.
BeefBacon replied to Julianwop (DayZ)'s topic in Suggestions
"95% of people have no idea how to do this" isn't a very good argument. I'm pretty sure that 95% of people couldn't tan leather, and I've got no idea how to make a fire without a match. Certainly I wouldn't stand a chance with a pile of soggy bark and a couple of twigs. I also wouldn't know how to apply a saline bag or where to stick an autoinjector. It's a silly argument. I wouldn't mind seeing ammo crafting in the game provided that the ammo you craft is of inferior quality to the ammo you can find. Think Metro 2033 where pristine ammo is like gold and really packs a punch, but most people have to use home made ammo made from old casings. Certainly shotgun shells should be craftable. Some time down the line workshops are being introduced. I could definitely see ammo crafting being introduced then. -
No, no, you see everyone on this forum works for Valve, Ubisoft, Doublefine, you name it. Everyone here is a l33t videogame designer which makes their opinion right all the time and so the devs are doing a shitty job. I think cockrend69 and $$deanhallisg4y$$ should take over development because those sons of bitches know what they're talking about. It's an empirical, scientific fact that when a dev team has loads of money, development speeds up relative to the amount of money they have, so there's no excuse for the devs to not make the game in 35 minutes because they have approximately 11 trillion dollars. We also all know that BI headquarters has a big switch on the wall labeled "enable modding for DayZ" but those greedy fuckers refuse to flip it, even though enabling modding for a game takes absolutely no time or effort whatsoever, and will in no way impede the development process or drive away the modding community because frequent updates will render mods obsolete every month. No sir. They're just bastards.

How would you feel if 1st person perspective was mandatory?
BeefBacon replied to FlimFlamm's topic in General Discussion
How so? It provides peripheral vision maybe a meter to your left and right, sure, but it also allows you to see the back of your head. So real. Wow. -
How to make .22 long-range sniping impossible/unviable?
BeefBacon replied to Sister Ray's topic in Suggestions
I think factors like wind will be included down the line. Can't verify that, though. -
How would you feel if 1st person perspective was mandatory?
BeefBacon replied to FlimFlamm's topic in General Discussion
I've never seen a good excuse to keep 3pp in. It all boils down to the fact that people need to peek over walls. They can't handle playing without that crutch. 1pp has its flaws, sure, but I don't see Counter-Strike or Red Orchestra players whining about how their FoV is too low, or how they don't have realistic awareness or that 1pp disorientates them. Obviously these aren't great comparisons since the structure of DayZ (you die you start again) is so different to CS and RO, but it makes no sense for a game claiming a basis in realism and authenticity to have an option where you can view the world from the eyes of an invisible drone hovering a couple of meters over your shoulder. I'd be fully in favour of a system that occludes objects that the players wouldn't be able to see in 1pp so that people can play 3pp without being able to peek over walls. People get to play in 3pp and many of the issues that people like myself have with 3pp would be negated. Everybody wins. Except people who like to wall peek. -
Sorry to hear that, man. Religion is a pox. I like this idea, but I don't think that players shouldn't die from starvation. Certainly it should be difficult when compared to hydration, but not impossible. There should perhaps be two stages of starvation; the one that slows you down and - much later on - one that causes the player to lose blood/ health eventually causing death. I very much like the idea of slowly healing provided you're fairly well-nourished. Always annoyed me that you had to be, like, turbo charged in order to regain blood and health - especially in recent patches where food can be a lot more difficult to come across. Healing should be very, very slow of course (faster when energized+hydrated) but present nonetheless. I'd really like to see a proper nutritional system, where different foods have different health values. Living off cans of tinned bacon, for example, should provide a whole slew of disadvantages. Similarly, one shouldn't consider a diet of courgettes and pumpkins to be healthy either. Ideally players should have a diet of meat, fruit and vegetables to receive dietary benefits. Having a crappy or non-varied diet shouldn't be fatal, but having a good diet could perhaps increase disease resistance or running speed.

I think you should be able to bandage yourself and use morphine/ painkillers. If I was bleeding out and in agony I think I'd at least attempt to use the pristine bag full of medical supplies that is lying right next to me. You should also be able to crawl very slowly. It should more or less clear up on its own after a couple of minutes (to the point that you can move again) unless you bleed out, of course.

Well he is pretty well known, and he probably is better than the vast majority of players. I tried CSGO. Never again.

Zeds are NOT zombies; just a small FYI
BeefBacon replied to barnabus's topic in New Player Discussion
Don't the devs sometimes refer to them as zombies? The terms are interchangeable.
