I've never been to Novo before. I was playing on the 'gents of Novo' server where killing in Novo is prohibited. I'm starting to get a good idea of when to start recording. In this case I'm glad I did. This was the first time I'd ever found an AK74. It was also one of the only times I had ever fired a weapon in any other capacity than self-defence. 0.55 has offered a lot of new DayZ experiences for me, so I'm interested to see what 0.56 will bring. Somewhere down the line I might start using a mic, but for now I'm happy just being a fly on the wall; having very little input and just seeing how things turn out.

Hah. No idea how this was dug up. Thanks for the comments, though! I've not made a video in a while, but I might record whenever I next play. I usually play 1pp, but the Gents of Novo server is so good that I don't mind 3pp. It's nice to have somewhere where you know you're safe and can trade with other players. Its also a good laugh and people in town are always friendly. Wish more servers would have safe towns; of course its only fun as long as it's player/ admin enforced. Wouldn't be as good if there was a zone where players couldn't take damage or something silly like that.

^ this It annoys me when people say "I don't think the engine can handle it". They don't know what the engine can and can't do. As you said, it's the devs who decide if an idea of feasible - we just put he ideas out there. Closing curtains would be excellent. I feel vulnerable when I go into a building to eat or hide from zombies because there's usually one or more windows, so it'd be very easy to be shot or spotted while I'm not paying attention. Perhaps curtains could also be removed to make rags or some other material (though that might mean cloth would become insanely common).

Yeah I'm not one of these gun nuts - in fact I've never fired a gun - but I'm pretty sure being shot would leave a pretty solid trail. Hell, I cut my finger a few months ago and left a trail of drips from the table to the sink. Having said that, people wear clothes and they can probably soak up a lot of blood. Still, it'd be pretty cool from a gameplay perspective seeing splatters and trails of blood leading into a building, for example - even if it's not wholly realistic.

Will anything of arma engine remain in final game?
BeefBacon replied to robophant's topic in General Discussion
Seems a bit of a malformed question. I don't think it has a real answer besides 'yes and no'. Take the Source engine for example. That still has lines of code from the Quake engine from which it was built, but besides a few fundamental engine features (brush-based world geometry, area occlusion, static lighting, etc) the engines have very little in common. If, in 2004, one were to ask "will Half-Life 2 have anything of the Quake engine left in it" the answer would, technically, be yes. So, despite RV and Efusion being different engines, elements of the RV engine will invariably remain unless the devs rewrite every single line of code which, in all likelihood, they won't. What you should have asked is "to what extent will the new engine differ from the RV engine?" I don't know any more than you do. New renderer with fancy new effects and better optimisation, a reworked inventory framework for crafting and item storage and so on, improvements to character movement and latency, probably new ballistics calculations, so on. -
Now I think about it about half of my interactions have been friendly, or at least non-hostile. Just pisses me off when I'm clearly not a threat, or they have the drop on me and could easily hold me up or kneecap me or something but they unload on me anyway. Even though there are plenty of friendly players, it's getting to the point where I'd rather just shoot first instead of doing a friendly dance. Been cocked over so many times by silent twats with too much ammo.

Absolutely. Maybe not 60 seconds to eat something - unless the action can be cancelled. So stopping after 30 seconds will eat 50% of the food. Berries and such should only take a couple of seconds to eat. If nothing else, loading ammo into magazines should take time. Dragging an empty mag into your bag, loading 30 rounds and then putting the mag bag into your gun should take a lot longer than 5 seconds. Maybe 1 - 3 seconds per round. Movement should be impossible or slowed immensely when loading ammo. I also like the idea of having to put on clothes as well. Would stop freshspawns from sprinting over to a body, taking everything and then sprinting off again in sub 5 seconds. Perhaps taking clothes from a corpse could take longer (10 - 20 seconds) but putting them on could take less time (5 - 10 seconds). So taking an item of clothing from a corpse and putting it on should take 15-30 seconds, or something along those lines. Taking a weapon or a hat or something loose should only take a couple of seconds. Adding/removing attachments is interesting. Would require some sort of pre-planning and greater caution. Say you have something with a long scope on it - you'd have to actually think ahead if you wanted to fight in close quarters rather than having a sniper that can instantly have its scope removed. As a side note, perhaps scopes and other attachments should increase the weight of the weapon (if they don't already).

I suspect that changing the screen gamma won't have quite the same effect as changing the gamma in-game, but that's a fair point. It may be the case that night is brightened to the point where you don't need to increase gamma. Think Skyrim or some other RPG where night is dark but not that dark. I think my favourite night time in any game has got to be Stalker. Even though it was pitch black it was atmospheric as fuck. It also didn't last 300 years like it does in DayZ. Accelerated time would almost certainly help. It's irritating joining a DayZ server only to be greeted by pitch blackness and the knowledge that it's going to be like this until the next server restart.

May have meant lower than 80, since only bastard heathens play with a FOV lower than 90. Or at least I like 85 - 100. Any less and it's mildly disorientating, any higher and the screen seems to bulge. How do they do that? I guess they find your in-game name and then look up your Steam profile? In my case my in-game name is usually different. Could be worth switching things up a bit if this is a problem for you. Not ideal, sure, but better than nothing. A lot of people have suggested that things like gamma and brightness should only be set outside of the game, maybe in a launcher or something. That way people can't crank it up on the fly. It'd only be a mild inconvenience but it'd help (though I'm guilty of the exploit as well since everybody else does it. It's the same with 3pp - if people are going to wallpeek then I will too. That's why I usually stick to 1pp). I think the devs have addressed the gamma thing, but I don't know what they plan to do about it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muzzle_flash They can be quite bright at night. Not so much during the day. Given that the video you posted was set during the night time (and why they edited in that fucking shake/wobble effect is beyond me) I fail to see the problem. EDIT Wait, no, OP is quite right. Found a realistic muzzle flash video here:

Awesome. I'd love it if sounds became quieter through walls so you can't hear people stomping around inside buildings. I hope they improve the sound of distant gunfire as well. As far as animations go, I can't wait. Janky movement has been a problem since day one. I'm hoping they sneak in a basic stamina system soon as well. The sooner they get rid of unlimited sprint the better.

Okay, so there's not a great variety of building models. I think he also suggests that the community design buildings, the best of which can be chosen by the devs and included in the game. I imagine we'll see more variety down the line. I certainly hope there won't be 'food houses' and 'gun houses'. Residential loot should be random in all residential buildings. Piano house, for example, shouldn't be almost guaranteed to spawn a shotgun or a mosin. Having said that, I don't think that piano house is much good in 0.57, but you get the picture.

0.55 "omg ders no l00t anywhere, worst update evar dev's's's u forget the tru meaning of dayZ!!!!1" 0.57 "omg thanx dev's's's's's's's's's's's's'z gunsr r everywere and its impossible to starve and der r no zeds best update evar!!!!!!" I'll admit, I've been having a lot of fun with 0.57. Found CR527s and mags, assault vests; all sorts. I'm pretty bad at DayZ so finding ph4t l00t makes a bit of a change. Having said that, I want the game to be more difficult. I'll enjoy 0.57 but I look forward to the next update where it might be more of a challenge. The devs have said, repeatedly, that DayZ is supposed to be unforgiving and I have no doubt that DayZ will eventually be the painful experience it was always meant to be. It seems, however, that a lot of the community is very into this Berezino punchout mindset. They're not happy unless they can find an AKM and a ghillie suit in every house, and they're going to kick and scream when the game becomes a challenge. In fact I have no doubt we'll see a hundred threads explaining why DayZ should be changed to adhere to the whims of the lowest common denominator. It's an old argument, but if you want an open world deathmatch then play Arma. DayZ is (will be) a survival game. How people choose to survive (KoS for example) is entirely up to them, but they shouldn't expect to go three houses and come out with all the gear they'll need to survive the next two hours.

You alt-tab for dayzdb? Pfft.

My dissatisfaction with the map of DayZ .

In what way does Chernarus not offer a good atmosphere? 'Elaborate' means provide further details/ more information etc. Nobody is curbing your right to freedom of expression, they're just disagreeing with you since you're demanding that Chernarus be scrapped. You come across as entitled, which is further underlined by you exlaiming that you're a customer. Just because you bought the game it doesn't give you the right to dictate how the game should be developed, but you are free (encouraged, even) to give your opinion. I'd love to see a new map - after Chernarus is finished of course. When modding becomes a thing I think we're going to see a lot of custom maps and I expect that we'll also see a lot of new custom buildings. So, so, so looking forward to that. Even if modding only includes new maps (though I'm certain it won't be so limited) the game will improve by leaps and bounds. The first couple of weeks of DayZ are the best because you can get lost. These days I have a hard time not knowing where I am, and not knowing exactly where to go to get the best loot. I miss having no idea where to go. In fact I'd love it if somewhere down the line the devs held an official competition for the community to build a new map. Obviously it should run for several months since the maps would have to be vast, but at the end of it the winning map (or maps) should be officially included in the game. Maybe there could be a cash prize or a something as well. -
Guys, i'm going to need a little more weather than what we currently have.
BeefBacon replied to Grappler's topic in Suggestions
I expect it was a mistake. Maybe some value that affects weather was accidentally changed - or maybe they're testing something. At any rate I'm certain it's temporary. Got to be said, though, I do miss the rain. I used to love finding rain coats because it was like hitting the jackpot. Do hope that more clothes will be a bit more waterproof down the line. As it stands a sweater is just as good as a wool coat or bomber jacket when it comes to the rain - certainly military gear of all types should be much better than they are at keeping players dry. -
They're not uncommon. Found several of them in a variety of locations. Hopefully one day people will ask 'where does this specific item spawn' and nobody will be ablee to igve an answer. Got to be said, it's better than it used to be. Much greater loot variety in all residential areas.

Say goodbye to you flashlights. (and free batteries)
BeefBacon replied to emuthreat's topic in General Discussion
They're decent at knocking out players, as far as I recall. Not had an opportunity to do so for a little while, mind. -
how to navigate to big cities without signs/compass/map when it is day?
BeefBacon replied to thomas05's topic in New Player Discussion
Just wander around. Before long you'll hit something you recognise. Nothing wrong with using the map, but it won't take long for it to become almost impossible to get lost. Enjoy not knowing where you are while it lasts, because the map is a lot smaller than you think. -
I think devs took trench coats off the table. Bit of a shame.

Revert the ammo can back to 8 squares for ammo
BeefBacon replied to stielhandgranate's topic in Suggestions
Yeah I suspect it's part of the new inventory system. I've noticed that most (maybe all) items that have storage have a size equivalent to the number of items it can store. The protector case has been extended to be 6 slots instead of 4, and has a capacity of 6. This is good. Medkits and ammo boxes, since they can only store specific item types, should have a larger capacity. But yeah, I'm pretty sure it's temporary. Certainly it'll go a long way towards fixing infinite inventories. -
But that's stupid. You shouldn't spawn with a weapon that is as good or better than all other melee weapons. Fists should only ever be used as a last resort - you shouldn't be able to take on someone wielding an axe and expect to have a good chance of winning. You said 4/10 times you were killed. That means that 6 out of 10 times having no weapon is better than having one of the best melee weapons in the game. That makes no sense. No amount of maneuvering or accurate punching should be able to outmatch a player with an effective melee weapon unless that player is already near death.

1 - 3 punches to the head is almost certainly going to result in a KO. Zombies take considerably more punches, but I don't think they can be knocked down any more (or at least I've not witnessed it). It's not uncommon for an unarmed player to knock down a player wielding a fireaxe. It's something I've done a couple of times. I'll grant that I was hit and was heavily bleeding in all cases, but under no circumstances should an unarmed player be able to take out a person wielding an axe in a fair fight.
-
Damage I'm fine with, I just think it KOs too quickly. Weapons like crowbars and baseball bats might do more damage, but they're not as effective at KOing. I think fists should do the damage they do now (or maybe slightly more) but it should be extremely difficult to KO. As it stands, helmets are incredibly important because it's so easy to knock out a player. I think that knocking out players, at least with fists, should be considerably more difficult.

One shot KO is too weak? What, do you want a single punch to turn players into mush like the berserk powerup in Doom?
