Why are there no basements and caves in DayZ?
BeefBacon replied to cptavpr0metheus's topic in General Discussion
I think this was covered a while ago. There are issues with lighting and world geometry that need to be addressed first. Making underground areas is possible (and I'm pretty sure its something the devs want to do) but it'd not be ideal. Look at the underground bunkers that are already in-game. They're not truly underground, they're just in a ditch that has a cover on it because the ground (grass, dirt and such) can't be deleted, it can only be moved out of the way. Presumably it can only be moved up and down. In order to have proper underground areas, the engine needs to be able to support removal of terrain, or something similar. I'd love it if underground areas became a thing. I'd like to see a bunker sure, but it'd also be cool to have a sewage system underneath the main towns. The sewers shouldn't have any loot in them (bar maybe the odd junk item or tool) but they should be an alternative way to navigate towns - perhaps a way to avoid infected when they become a threat. -
I just want more revolvers. This Nagant thing looks like a revolver, so it works for me.

No sleeping. No pissing. No pooping. I'm fine with resting, though. Sitting down for a minute or two should restore your stamina.

I'd like to see advanced foods. So you could live off canned food, vegetables, deer steaks, etc, but mixing certain foods together and cooking them should produce meals that can maybe even restore some blood. Maybe mixing beef or venison with potatoes, water and, I don't know, courgette could create a stew, amongst a few other recipes. It'd encourage players to use a wider variety of food rather than just eating whatever gets them energised. As a side note, it'd be cool if diets were a thing as well, so eating a variety of foods would provide some kind of buff which just eating canned bacon wouldn't provide.

Yeah I wouldn't mind if the crosshair disappeared when raising your weapon. I find it useful for picking items up (say the corner of an item is sticking out from under a bed or something) and it gives a nice point of reference. It should never help with aiming, though. If you want to hip fire then be prepared to miss.

end product - how will new players know howto xxx?
BeefBacon replied to nl's topic in General Discussion
I expect there'll be a tutorial of some sort to teach how movement and inventory works, along with a couple of game basics like food, crafting, staying warm, etc.. It is all very straightforward, though, and there are plenty of tutorial videos out there so I don't think there really needs to be a tutorial. Game wouldn't suffer if it had one, though. -
winter clothing = some snow areas in the future?
BeefBacon replied to Bsur's topic in General Discussion
God damn it, Rick. Keep doing what you do. I don't think we'll get a snowy area of Chernarus since the devs have said they're not expanding the map any further (they're just adding new villages and such) but I think it's possible that we'll get a whole new map that has snowy areas. It might also be for the benefit of community maps that have snowy areas. Alternatively it just makes sense to have winter clothing. We keep coats and whatnot in the summer, after all, so it makes sense that hunters would have gear for all seasons. -
LOVE ;D nah I'm just teasing. It seems to me that ammo is just common enough. Experimenting with massively reducing it would be interesting but it seems fine as it is for the most part. The problem is that ammo tends to spawn in big clumps. It's not difficult to go into a building and find 20 rounds for your gun at which point you might decide to just skip the rest of the town and go to NWAF or something. It'd be better if ammo spawns were much more common but we only got 1 - 5 rounds at a time. That way it's not difficult to find a little bit of ammo for your gun, but you won't be spraying all over the place since you'll probably only have a few rounds - unless you manage to loot all of Cherno by yourself of course. Soft skills are incoming. I suppose that means that you'll get better at performing certain tasks over time - and I like that. Randomised skills would be interesting but players suicide just to get a better spawn, they'll absolutely suicide for better skills.

Been in for a little while now, I think. I've spawned there once or twice. Neither time went particularly well - think I froze or starved to death at least once after swimming across. Not much there worth looting either, especially when some other poor sap spawned there before you and took all they could.

1pp servers tend to be underpopulated. I hopped on experimental last night and the 3pp servers had 40+ players. The highest population on 1pp was 15. Now you could argue that that's just customer demands, and you'd actually be right. 3pp is more popular than 1pp so more people play it. As someone who considers 1pp to be superior (though the gap between 1pp and 3pp is narrowing due to the new camera controls) I'm given a choice. Shall I play 1pp on a server that isn't even half full, or 3pp on a packed server? Imagine you're up for a game of, I don't know, Counter-Strike and every server is a deathrun server or gun game. Is it fair to demand that everyone play CS unmodded? Of course not. What you're probably going to do is try and convince other people to maybe stop playing zombies or surf and maybe have a game on Office or Dust. Then imagine all the people turning around to tell you "u hav ur own servers" or "teh peopl hae spoken! people want gun game!" The changes to 3pp are a push in the right direction. I daresay nobody has a problem with 3pp itself, the problem is with the exploits (and they are exploits) associated with 3pp. If the devs, by whatever means, manage to eradicate wall peeking and such you'll likely never see a "1pp vs 3pp" thread ever again.

I agree to an extent. He's right about the inconsistent framerate thing. I notice the low framerate a lot more in 1pp than 3pp. However, this will eventually be fixed or at least mitigated so this is a temporary issue at best. Vehicles I also agree with him on, though he gives no reasoning besides saying "itz retartid lol". Moron. Rear view mirrors and such not working makes driving a lot more difficult. I'd like to be able to peek my head out of the window to look back or something as well. I seem to recall devs mentioning the new renderer would allow things like rear view mirrors so, again, temporary issue. 3pp will always be in the game - the devs have said as much - even though they've said that 1pp really is the best way to play. That being the case, reaching a 3pp compromise that restricts the exploits inherent in 3pp is the best we can hope for. That's good enough for me.

Hah, sorry. Yeah I liked it, though there were some pretty serious frame drops. Was that in-game or just a problem with recording? Also I'd argue for a shorter intro sequence. It was all nice and thematic but almost 30 seconds is a bit too long. Could maybe just have the video title/ your YouTube name and then lead it in with text or a voiceover. Gets it into the action quickly without sitting through an animation we've all seen a million times.

Mods could very easily go either way. On one hand we'll see AS50s and APCs. On the other we'll see some really cool survival-focused mods (I've mentioned STALKER-themed mods in some other post) and they'd be incredible. There are a lot of things that vanilla will simply never offer. Radiation zones, for example. That's something that I know is popular, but it has no real place in vanilla. Trade posts is another one - granted I'm not sold on trading and currency and such. To deny DayZ mods is to deny DayZ longevity. There will be a time when the Devs are no longer adding to DayZ and without mods it will eventually fade into a tiny community of elitists who were afraid they'd lose the core experience. There will likely always be official vanilla servers. Chernarus is great, but I want the freedom to be eaten by mutants in the Zone.
-
I tend to think of DayZ being set either just after Arma 2 (in an alternate universe) or in an alternate version of Arma 2 where there are things like Chedaki rebels and Russian and US intervention but the outbreak hits before everything can kick off. That being a possibility, it might be he case that DayZ is happening at the exact same time as the Arma 2 campaign. That would explain away inconsistencies between DayZ Chernarus and Arma 2 Chernarus as far as lore is concerned.

You attacked them for something you thought they had. That makes you a bandit. What you mean is 'accidental KoS'. There's nothing wrong with being a bandit. Hell, you attacked them for a reason, not just for the sake of killing them. That's fine. Honestly KoS is fine as well. I hate being killed on sight but it keeps me on my toes - DayZ would be boring if everyone was friendly.

I seem to recall that modding is a Q4 thing. Or at least Steam workshop support is - so that's a fair indication that modding in some form may be coming this year, even if it's just custom maps. The devs will release modding when they think the time is right. Don't say "they should release modding now because it'll attract loads of new players!" or any nonsense like that because, frankly, you don't know shit. It's possible that modding isn't even possible at this stage. Hell, the game is barely stable as it is and something new breaks with every release. Just be patient. We all want new maps. I expect we'll see a lot of UI mods. Certainly new vehicles, weapons, items, clothing etc. It's only a matter of time before we see something STALKER themed and I am so, so, so looking forward to that. What I'm hoping is that devs will actively support modding and add the framework for popular ideas. For example something that'd make adding in radiation zones, or something, much easier for mod creators so they don't have to write weird scripts that might not work or which produce lag or something. My understanding is that the Arma2 mods are a mess of scripts and just general nonsense, so a more streamlined framework would be ideal. Unfortunately I don't doubt we'll see rubbish like tanks and helicopter gunships, but I'm hoping we'll see just as many neat survival-themed mods which make the game unforgiving (moreso than vanilla, even) but extremely rewarding. But please. STALKER themed. Give me snorks and bloodsuckers. Give me dilapidated factories and vast irradiated mutant-infested swamps. Give me that sweet cheeki breeki.

It looks like the wells are extremely simple. No valves or anything. I guess you could jam up the pump (maybe you'd need a crowbar to unjam it) but I don't think you could do anything much more than that. Also I think wells tend to already have a rope and bucket attached, since they're communal wells. Would be neat to have to carry stuff to properly use a well, but doesn't seem all that realistic. But yes. I'd like water pumps to be quite rare. Maybe one in each of the big towns and then a couple of others in various villages across the map. Could even put them in 'worthless' villages or at farms. That way locations that people rarely bother to visit will have something of value in them. Other wells should be uncommon but not rare, found in many villages - but drinking from these wells should be time consuming and there should be a small chance for the water to be infected. Next up should be rivers and streams. These should be fairly safe to drink from, but should also be pretty rare (as they already are). Finally standing water (lakes, ponds) should have a high chance of infection, but would also be the lowest risk (in terms of player interaction) and likely the most abundant source of water. Boiling water should render it pure (if it doesn't already, again not played in a while) or at least lessen the chance of infection. I think the control of certain resources by groups should be focused on. He who controls the spice cont - ah - whoever controls the water controls the world.

Introductory GUIDE to the Improvised Bow and Archery Mechanics
BeefBacon replied to FlimFlamm's topic in General Discussion
I've tried using a bow in the past, but in previous versions putting together a bow before finding a weapon was pretty difficult. In fact the one time I decided to skip guns and focus on making a working bow, bows didn't work. I was gutted. Spent all that time finding an ashwood tree, some rope and some chicken feathers only for bows to be broken. I've not tried again since. I'd certainly use bows if they could be broken down like the trumpet (or maybe they can, I've not played in a while) or if there was a separate bow slot. As it stands, guns aren't rare enough to warrant using a bow, especially since it's quite easy to craft a suppressor. Still, excellent guide. -
I'd like wells (pumps, whatever) to be far less common. They should be an infinite source of pure water, but they should be rarer to make areas where wells exist hotspots. A group could hold a village that has the only well in walking distance of NWAF, for example. Or, perhaps, the pumps could be rare but wells (the bucket and rope kind) could be more common. Taking water from wells (as opposed to pumps) could be more time consuming and have a small chance to cause infection. That'd make them preferable to things like rivers and lakes, but there'd be a risk associated with spending so much time taking water from a water source that others would likely attempt to use. But yes. In response to the OP, it'd be cool if all wells were water sources.

Vehicle suggestion - Ursus C360. " Designed to be indestructible "
BeefBacon replied to Pba (DayZ)'s topic in Suggestions
I'd be down for this. Could be upgraded to become some sort of armoured beast since I assume it's got a pretty hefty engine. -
Fair ;D I use Vimeo for uploading showreels and whatnot. Professional stuff. Think YouTube gives off a bit of an amateur vibe - tends to be looked down on by clients and such. You might have uploaded the only video that isn't snowboarders shot with a DSLR and jammed through some colour filter. Got to be said, your reason for suicide is the best I've ever heard (in-game, I mean). I've not played a female character so I don't know what it sounds like, but it seems reasonable to me. I've never suicided. Hell, if you're in a 'bad' place then odds are there'll be a bunch of loot since everyone else gave up for a Berezino spawn. Helps that I never have any idea where I am - being bad at games has its perks.

We play doctor soldiers who can use every firearm we come across, know instinctively how to accurately fire a bow made from a stick and can tan leather and then make clothing from that leather while instantly repairing shattered bones with a twig and a rag. Smelting is just too unrealistic.

I wouldn't mind harsher penalties for death in general. A 5 minute wait sounds harsh but it'd deter suicide and PvP punchouts, as well as sprinting to loot your own body. I'd argue that dying within, say, 30 seconds of spawning should not incur a spawn timer. It'd suck to get killed while spawning in and to then be faced with a 5 minute timer. 5 minutes is enough to make a cup of tea or a sandwich and to deter suicide for better spawns while not being so long as to eat into a play session.
