The most fun I've ever had in DayZ was the .55 patch. I found plenty of shit. Didn't starve to death once, but I was always close. I didn't have a fireaxe and an M4 so zombies actually became a threat to the point where I was more inclined to avoid them than fight them, since fighting them usually resulted in blood loss which wasn't easy to get back without a can of food around every corner. It also meant a lot of apple picking which wasn't fun in the slightest, but the rest of it was wonderful - was just a case of get off the coast. A lot of people were whining because they were trying to loot in Cherno. I went inland and found plenty of stuff, even the odd can of food that had been missed presumably because "omg im not looting that bilding it dusnt spawn aks."

The phantom sounds of players eating, combining ammo, etc have been eradicated - or at least I've not heard them. Think they've been gone since .57 or something. There are a few bullshit ambient sounds, stuff like gates opening, birds flying away, stuff like that. In my opinion these should be removed. All sounds (except wind, birds tweeting, etc) should e caused by a player action. A stick cracking in the woods should be because a player or a zombie stood on one. A gate sound should be because a gate has opened. You get the idea. Of course I wouldn't be against something like, I don't know, a window shutter slamming in the wind, but only if there is actually a source for the sound. Maybe certain gates could be moved by the wind if they're not latched. That'd add tension without being artificial.

New renderer - When will we see it or at least get some kind of timeline?
BeefBacon replied to robophant's topic in General Discussion
So... at least 3 - 4 years? I sure hope you didn't have trouble finding a development cycle of 2 years good buddy. Sounds like DayZ is right on track. Now why would I compare the development times of AAA games? Gosh darn it, I can't think why I would do a thing like that. -
New renderer - When will we see it or at least get some kind of timeline?
BeefBacon replied to robophant's topic in General Discussion
Complete and utter bullshit. Games like Call of Duty get yearly releases because it's effectively the same game over and over, with minor changes to the engine and reused assets. When you have an entire development studio dedicated to yearly releases of iterations of the same game then yeah, you might think that games only take a year. Now games developed from scratch? Okay. The Last of Us, 4 years, and that's with Sony backing it. Halo 4, 3 years and Microsoft's flagship title. Fallout 4, around 6 years. Skyrim, 5 years. Half-Life 3, 10^80 years. Have I made my point yet? Don't talk shit. I'm mostly happy with the development speed. I only play every few months to see what's changed. It's usually a lot of small things, but eventually we'll see new animation systems, renderers, shit like that. Those will be the big changes that the devs said at the very beginning would take a long, long time to sort out. At the start the devs were, I think even they have admitted, very poorly organised. That is no longer the case. Without being some sort of expert in game development I can't say if development on the engine is slow or not, but I daresay you from the university of "I've used Valve Hammer Editor and my mate made a Flash game once" can use your expertise to analyse the development of DayZ. Maybe you can even give tips. I don't have a problem with you having a problem with DayZ or its developers. There are some things I'd like to be addressed and to some extent you even have a point. What I do have a problem with, however, is people talking shit. Don't do that. -
I like that idea. It's still authentic while still being gamey. A tourniquet could stop, say, 80% of blood loss - no matter how much blood you're losing. That way it would slow down excessive bleeding giving the player time to get away or otherwise find safety in order to have time to use a medical sewing kit to turn the major wound into a minor wound, and then fix the minor wound by applying a bandage. Applying a tourniquet should be a quick process requiring only a few seconds. Using the medical sewing kit should take maybe up to a minute, making it impractical to use while in combat. I'm not sure how broken limbs should work, though. Maybe a splint could fix the broken bone while morphine removes the effects. So maybe a broken bone should cause the player to slowly lose health or blood or whatever, and that health or blood loss should be accelerated when the broken limb is in use (walking with a broken leg, for example). Walking with a broken leg should result in a limp, even if that leg is splinted. Aiming with a broken arm (again, even if splinted) should result in wobbly aim, cries of pain, etc etc. These ffects could lessen on their own over time without morphine.

[Proper Names 101] Quonset Hut vs Officer Tent
BeefBacon replied to Weyland Yutani (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
quonsethut.org. A website devoted to quonset huts. I'm having trouble thinking of a more boring website. How about a website about a specific make of towel rack? The history of crocs? Incredible. I can't see anyone referring to officer tents as quonset huts. Maybe officer huts? I'm not even sure how to pronounce quonset. Konset? Kwonsit? Koo-on-set? Informative nonetheless. -
Yup, same. I think I discovered DayZ through Frankie's videos, then ended up buying the standalone a month or two after it was released. Well. 'released'.

Yeah, it should be more difficult to kill a player straight off. I've got no problem with a shot to the chest killing a player eventually - maybe after a minute or something, but most fights in DayZ seem to be over after that initial shot, and that kind of sucks. There's nothing quite as disappointing as "oh cool, he's not friendly, time for a really cool fire fight" CRACK "you are dead" anticlimactic as fuck. Of course it should also be possible to die somewhat rapidly (without medical attention) from a shot to the arm or leg. There are arteries and stuff, and I'm guessing if a bullet split a bone like fire wood, it'd probably sting a bit. Hell, I broke my arm a few years ago and almost passed out a few minutes later. Throw blood loss and immense pain into the mix and you're in trouble.
-
It'll come as part of the new animation system. You can see the prototype, I guess, in the DayZ trailer released like 2 years ago, where people are limping away from a fight. Presumably how badly you limp and how you limp will be affected on where you're injured. If you break a rib you'll probably hold your side and and stagger along, and if you get shot in the leg you'll probably limp quite badly. That's speculation of course (the limping stuff is pretty much confirmed, not so much on ow it'll function though) but it's a much better and in-depth system than simple tagging, wouldn't you agree? It's a bit like vehicles. I remember months ago people were whining (not that you're whining) about vehicles not being in the game. "Just add vehicles from Arma 2! I saw mad hax where somebody just imported Arma 2 vehicles and they worked perfectly, DayZ is a scam!" Meanwhile they were working on a system that would add stuff like suspension and individual car parts and interactive doors and shit. Who's calling for basic old shitty Arma 2 cars now? Combat in general does need work. The movement system is stupid. However, I think the devs know this and it'll hopefully be addressed soon. I don't know when their new animation system thing is coming out, but hopefully it'll be soon.
-
I don't know if that's realistic. You're not going to slow down if your arm gets grazed are you? This isn't CSGO. Eventually there'll be limping animations and stuff, so getting injured will result in slower movement.

For real? Yeah it's good, go for it. Not too expensive either, decent portions. Plus you can bring your mates for mad bants. Bantersaurus Rex. Archbishop of Banterbury. Testicular banter. Actually ignore the last one.

Day Z as it should be : The Earth Abides
BeefBacon replied to Whyherro123's topic in General Discussion
While that sound fun in theory, I don't think it'd work well in practice. Most people are going to have a hard time putting in the hours to get anywhere. People are unlikely to form long-term groups with randoms. Short term I can see some sort of relationship being formed, but one bullet isn't going to be worth as much as the inventory of the player you just killed. Having a very small amount of ammo, again, sounds awesome -and it would be - but who wants to spend hours on end scouring the map for one bullet? Sure you're surviving along the way, but what's the point in even having a gun if ammo is going to be so insanely difficult to find that you're having to decide between killing that geared player and shooting a deer? It isn't practical. What would be practical, however, is greatly increasing the rate at which ammo spawns, but reducing the number of rounds that spawn in each pile. So instead of finding, I don't know, 20 9mm rounds you'll only find 2, but there'll be 10 other locations in that village where 2 9mm rounds have spawned. This means that finding some ammo for your gun is relatively easy, but finding a lot means clearing out a village of zombies, which should be no easy task. PvP and KoS will always happen because the reward will outweigh the risk, even if the only reward is in neutralising a potential threat. Would scarcity mean people might be less willing to kill freshspawns? Probably, but it won't stop KoS against geared players. I too look forward to modding. Super keen on a STALKER-themed mod. Misery multiplayer. -
Now for some banter? Did you go out for a cheeky Nando's too? Video was pretty great. They got what they deserved.

Day Z as it should be : The Earth Abides
BeefBacon replied to Whyherro123's topic in General Discussion
Right... so how does this prevent KoS? It sounds like it'd just encourage it. There have been a bunch of times where I could have killed someone but didn't, because there's nothing on them that I need, they're not necessarily a threat and it'd probably just piss them off. Now if that guy had a bottle of precious water and a fancy hat, why would I not kill him? If he has a disease that he can give me, why would I not kill him? Now, if I wanted to go looting in a large town but there were too many zombies, and I met some guy who could help me then sure - I'd work with him and loot the place. But then, after we're both happy and fat with loot... why would I not kill him? It wouldn't be KoS, sure but it's the same result. I'm in favour of a more difficult game. DayZ is in alpha, you may have heard, which means it is incomplete. The devs have stated, repeatedly that they intend to make DayZ more difficult, but you people seem to think that doing so will reduce KoS. And why do people want to struggle so much? It'd be so much fun to play DayZ for 3 hours, where at hour one you find your first pair of shoes, hour two you're eating worms and at hour 3 you've shat yourself to death. Rinse and repeat because it's 'challenging'. Why do you want everyone on the server fighting over a solitary can of beans, using bows and spears? Do you not think there's a middle ground between that and everyone spawning with an M4? -
Haha, ah, that makes sense.

As I recall there's a 'rocker' civilian model in Arma 2. I think he wears converse, or at least casual shoes. Americans are big fans of trainers, or 'sneakers'. It's so weird. You see a guy in beige trousers and white trainers, he's probably American. I guess I don't really have a point, it's just some... shoe info?
-
I don't get why players kill themselves. Is it to spawn closer to their buddies?
-
Skinny and baggy jeans, maybe? Plain shirts - white, grey, brown, blue, etc etc Plain backpacks - black, brown, red, etc Satchels/ manbags? Plimps/ converse shoes Some sort of plain jacket, rather than a coat, sort of somewhere between a hoodie and a coat Chinos/ slacks/ generic trousers that aren't jeans Fishing vests

I like all the ideas. Rope, as I understand it, is a pretty important when it comes to survival stuff. It should be a very diverse material that is used in a lot of recipes. No. Nobody did that.

How does it feel to know that your game is years behind arma 3 exile

Poor babby clicked "I understand" without understanding. I think you can take online courses for reading comprehension. -
All you Hardcore players packed it up and left?
BeefBacon replied to infiltrator's topic in General Discussion
Actually I think they'll be adding functional wing mirrors for cars. I think they're in Arma 3 so that makes sense. Reflective water would be pretty great too ;D -
I'd say massively increase the chances of finding something like a stone on a beach. It's possible that you'd pick up a couple of rocks that maybe aren't suitable, but it wouldn't take long to find something that'd work. When it comes to trees and bushes, how about if the tree or berry bush has apples or berries visible, there's something like a 90% chance, even 100%, to find fruit. Finding a couple of apples or berries then causes the tree/bush to no longer display the fruit, at which point the chances that you'll find something are reduced. This means that apple trees and fruit bushes are still an infinite source of food, but it's faster to gather the food without being overpowered or by introducing some arbitrary "all the apples have been picked so you're screwed" mechanic.

BeefBacon replied to infiltrator's topic in General Discussion
Gents servers are 3pp. I like Gents. My buddy also recently got into DayZ and we play together sometimes. As such I play 3pp these days, even though I hate wall peeking. At least I can look at my character though - that's the really important thing. -
Sounds like it'd be a relatively simple shader effect. Grass could retain the same view distance properties, but those properties could be overridden to spawn invisible grass around players at a distance. This grass maintains its alpha obscuration properties, but isn't actually visible. Sounds like a wonderful idea. Certainly it sounds more feasible than something like the wall peeking obscuration thing that is occasionally discussed. Would be cool to get a dev's input on this sort of thing.

Improvised Iron sight, Conceal items in books, and wooden shiv
BeefBacon replied to thefriendlydutchman's topic in Suggestions
Why would you want to improvise iron sights? I thought all guns had them. Besides, I doubt that plopping a coke can on a rifle will serve to improve accuracy. Others I can get on with, though. More improvised weapons is always a plus. Also couldn't hurt to give more of a purpose to books.
