    Dayz Real Life

Where are the zombies? Do they have too much impact on server performance?
  2. themightylc

Is this normal or there is something wrong ?

Drop in cities is very much normal, but it should (imo) never drop below 10 even on older rigs. Couple friends of mine had the same problems with frame rates as low as 5, sometimes 3 fps. We followed all the tips from this video: after that it was back to 30+ fps I don't think the "CPU-Tools" thingy is neccessary but the graphic settings and the changes to the config files suggested are essential. I suggest you start with those. Note: there are quite a lot of guides on DayZ-Fps boost out there, but they essentially all boil down to the contents of this video.

    Status Report - 09 Sept

I really appreaciate your standpoint - and faith in this game that we all love - but that's actually kind of my point. The spawning of a new genre also spawns many competitors. For all we know there could be someone building THE DayZ killer right now. This game (not it's ideas but it's technical core) could be outdated by the time it comes out - and with already more than enough copies sold, there is no real ("business real") reason to push being competitive in the (near-future) market. Those 18yo will pick "the best game to date" - not the game which the eldery of that time will have the fondest memories of. And BI will not care about anything those 18yo buy - they've already surpassed their sales expectations. Don't know. It's a weird situation. We'll just have to wait and see.

    Status Report - 09 Sept

That's what I think most people want, but I also seriously think that 2018 would be so late that the game will have so little impact left that it will disappear into obsurity very fast. Just my opinion. I can tell for sure none of my friends - myself included - will have much DayZ drive left in 3 Years from now. We're almost burnt out as it is. The question remains though if and why 2016 is an unrealistic target window for a release. Just a fun fact: In the previous presentation Hicks talked about having played about 5.400 hrs. If he's talking about Standalone since EA that would close to 8 hours every single day. Even when we talk pre-EA that would be 6 extra months if I am not mistaken, so still over 6 hrs a day for 7days a week. I think that must be a little exaggerated, otherwise I don't know when he sleeps and actually works inbetween ;) Or maybe he meant the mod? IF so - how does THAT help our game ;)?

I'm a little confused - I hear all those amazing things Hicks talks about in this and the last conference video and cannot help but wonder: Is Beta at the end of 2015 or early 2016 still a goal? Beta usually means feature-complete, right? Measured against the pacing we are used to and the fact that sometimes things that "will be fixed in a few days" take weeks or months, and that we have not ever seen a glimps of camps, more vehicles, better animations, let alone the new renderer in action it feels rather unlikely to me that 1.0 should be in our hands before the end of 2016. Sorry, but does this feel almost a little Molyneux-esque or is that just me? A few short videos from the internal testing builds that show at least SOME of this stuff actually being worked on would restore my faith by quite a lot i guess.

    Atmosphere and environment

Well... I usually don't die from getting punched in the arm. And I'm pretty sure in the case that I would be attacked by one, maybe multiple "infected people" a little scream out of fear alone would not be out of place but "fitting/beneficial" to the atmosphere. Moreso than a "grunt". That's all the op suggested. I don't think he wants every "ouch" to be replaced by "hrrreyyyeeeeeaaararrrghhhg" - at least that's not what I am getting from the suggestion. So I just found it weird to be in such a defensive stance from the get-go, dismissing the mere suggestion of someone screaming while being bitten (or beaten) to death by the fact that "no,no, they are not zombies. Here, let me punch you in the arm and see what you say". Just this discussion right here is just weird - that is all I'm saying. And now I'm done, because I won't be fed until I'm actually being the troll here.

    Atmosphere and environment

And the thought of "getting mauled by an infected person" as opposed to getting eaten by a zombie will let you endure the procedure with quiet dignity is that your point? Otherwise I don't know how that elaborate explanation even remotely translates to the topic suggested by the op, who, actually, hereby get's my beans for he has good ideas.

    increase Map size

Fantastic Idea - finding high end gear or even Vehicles must be rare and dangerous to be rewarding. Imagine the effort and preparation one would have to put into to embark into the woods just to see what they can find. "Endless/Infinite/Procedurally generated" is not even neccessary imo - for a first iteration just slap a lot of Trees out there for another 3x 250km² (quadrupling the map size) and things should be fine. I don't get why "water would be a problem" - can't there be any lakes/rivers? I mean you'd still need insane amounts of water purification pills, but that would be a) easier than carrying hundreds of barrels with fresh water and b) an incentive to go back to scavenging at least at some point. Anyway - great idea, have my beans.
  10. I don't get this. If I understand the OP correctly he wants all character-data to be in the hive BUT the positional info to be stored on server. Am I just dumb or is this the best f**ing teleport hack ever? On one Server I'm logged out at my camp - on the other in a "hotzone" or an enemy camp. Log out to get in the camp, gear up, log back in the other server to pwn the noobs. What do I not get that is not completely ridiculous about this suggestion?

Remove the Vicinity "panel" in the future.

You mean... as in taking long-estabilshed and well-working ideas from other games??? This. Is. DAYZ! (kicking you down a well) Just kidding. All for it!

Notification of item dropped from your hands

I have wished for something like this a lot of times - mostly out of frustration of course. I've lost some pretty high end gear this way. Though mostly out of greed - running around with two main weapons, probably dying sometime down the road without the chance to ever fire either of them... Problem is - I've dropped things in real life without noticing. There I've said it. Clever, "careful" organization of your inventory is part of the gameplay. This can be learned to be avoided. If it gives me an edge over other players... the "droppers"... I'm all for it. So my opinion on this now is: do not implement a notification. Sound of the item dropping on the floor is okay. Drowned by other noise? Not paying attention? Dropping stuff it in tall grass? Your loss.

    Apple plucker

An apple plucker tool. Like this one: http://imgur.com/gallery/bjzGMLk Would increase probability of getting apples from a tree, possibly scaling with the item state. Can be wielded and worn as a melee weapon. Easy + useful + plausible = awesome.
  14. themightylc

    Apple plucker

Not crude at all - that's what torture looks like in an improvised environment. In the first (i think) Bond movie with Craig, he got worked on his balls with a big ol' rope, sitting on a cut up wicker chair. One of the most painful scenes ever. And that wasn't even out of improvisation - just for fun. I think - without stretching this topic too far - this will always be the problem limit of a truly "realistic" game: the human ability to improvise.

    Any plans for 3PP immersion?

Are you serious? It's these "situations" that will decide if you keep on playing with your 40+ hrs character or get killed by a starving newspawn that found a sks that you NEVER EVEN SAW. And thus these "rare" situations form your overall experience with the game. Almost every YouTuber plays 3PP and almost every video has at least some kind of action-section highlighting their shooting skills while abusing the wall peeking to a disgusting degree. This IS a problem because I love DayZ mostly because of the random encounters but I acutally feel like I have met everyone playing 1PP within a sub-100 ping radius.

Anyone else playing as a hoarder currently?

Hey guys... just asking for genuine interest: no jugement. Are you talking about server-hopping or acutally scavening all of Chernarus and hoarding stuff in one place (which i would call setting up base instead). If it is the former - and even though this is not just hopping from server to server in a high loot area, dumping your stuff on your own server - is this playstyle not even frowned upon? It just so happens to completely ruin my hope in this game ever evolving into something i want to play. I think this is actually the "flaw" in the concept that Dean Hall was talking about before he scram'ed. In a nutshell: Centralized loot distribution means hoarders ruin the game for everyone. No loot distribution: they become overpowered and ruin the game for everyone. Keep in the persistence wipes forever... well... game ruined for everyone... So what is this? Am I missing something? Why even play this way if the OP is admittedly having no fun?

Status Report - Week of 20 Oct 14

I dare to say this is a given: IF it even will be adjustable, then only on private hives. If people want to play 60€ a month to play a "worse kind of Battlefield" then so be it. Each to their own.

Status Report - Week of 20 Oct 14

Cheers to the Dev Team!! This week's Blog is so exciting - if we don't all die of natural causes before it's done (sorry :P), DayZ will be so much more than I expected!! Keep up that good work guys!!
  19. Specifically looking for DayZ GB 1-269 (Persistence ON) - Hosted by MPGS.co Why are they constantly down since a week or so? Did someone trip over a cable? Can we expect to get our tents back at some time - or was it foolish of us to put them down on those servers? :)

    SERVER ADMIN RULES *PLEASE RESPOND*

This is an interesting Topic. Would it be okay to restart the server then? With the whole clan (or the people wanting to play) "standing by" and entering the server as soon as it's up? It's not against the rules to restart the server and a 5-Minutes warning would be more than people are used to :) There are TONS of people just playing solo that will switch servers as soon as they restart. On the other hand, if it's the matter of a full server with one or two people ready to join, I've personally never experienced waiting periods for longer than a few minutes...
  21. themightylc

    The servers restart so often...

I'm absolutely positive you're right. I'm almost afraid to ask that but why are the dev's not enforcing the rules they put up for servers AT ALL? It's Alpha blabla but it is THOSE kind of servers/players/admins that ruin the (Alpha-)experience for everybody else and I hate that they go to bed with the feeling that they got something clever and cool going on when they should be forbidden to run a server at all. As soon as private hives hit, the dev's will have shipped around enforcing server hosting rules for good.... And by "enforcing" I mean as simple as removing the servers that are called join=kick, clan only or simply are NOT named according the the conventions they put up...

    Perks/skills/professions/stats

I absolutely like that idea - with the footnote that differences should be subtle - but coming to think of it this is it. Right now with the abundance of food and near-empty servers to choose from, spawnig as a "hungry" character is nothing but a minor nuisance. But making the "healthy" status a little harder to achieve and maybe also restricting spawn points to low-loot locations it would be 1) actually a challenge to survive before being geared up 2) make sense to be stripped off all your gear (maybe even ABONDONING your gear to run faster??) near your hidden stash and remain healthy and strong, than spawning "on the coast" again. I really really hope that's the vision.
  23. themightylc

    Perks/skills/professions/stats

This.Imho the game needs some/any kind of mechanic that makes you value (your own life) over your gear. Being stripped naked but left alive by bandits sets you back MORE than dying and starting over. "Take all my stuff but let me live" is one of the most basic survival strategies out there and in DayZ this does not make sense. Perks could be restricted to survival elements only, as I think superiority in combat should remain a result of skill and selecting the right gear.

So how do YOU play DayZ

Me and my friends (we are playing "Hero Style" and call ourselves the Sad Men's Zombie Club [sMZC]) had a weird playing experience the other night. I call it weird because it never occurred to me to play DayZ like that and maybe I'm the one that's weird. We found a server by some criteria that I don't remember and met some people. After establishing our mutual friendlyness we started moving along. They invited us to a Teamspeak-Server which we logged on to - even though we have our own server. The TS-server was extremly structured which struck me as odd but nonetheless we kept playing and had a good time. The people we met were a very heterogenous group, one guy in their 30's one 21 and another that sounded more like a 13 year old. We met up with a fourth person and had a lot of fun fooling around. Then another guy logged into the TS server and asked "what town are you guys in" and i replied tounge-in-cheek in the spirit of our sillyness something to the effect of "we're in blabla, but only death awaits you here". The guy was suddenly superpissed, telling me to answer in a polite manner when he asks me a question. The he went off. I was confused asking the other dudes "did you know that guy? No they didn't. Then it dawned on me. None of tose guys knew each other. They meet prior to logging on to a server in Teamspeak, make arrangements on where to meet and loot an otherwise empty server. This was very new to me and the opposite of how we are used to play this game. Go to a server and try to find people. Tag along if they are friendly - fight back if they are not. How do you guys play DayZ. How do you "select" a Server? TL;DR: I was unaware of the fact that some people look up servers that have an obligatory Teamspeak-Server tied to them. They hook up over TS, meet in the game and start looting together. Who does that? Doesn't this rob the game of it's core experience?

    Are we playing DayZ wrong...

...because we are having so much fun doing it? Reading up on all the complaints on the forum I wonder what we are doing differently? We are playing in a group of 5 people (sometimes joined by guests) in various combinations and sometimes solo. We are a diverse group, 4 guys at the age of 23, 29, 35 and 36 and a girl of 25, each with their own approach to the game in respect of serious- vs. sillyness and very different "video game" backgrounds from veteran FPS'er to casual mobile game player. Some of us are married with children. We try to employ the "Hero Style" when we play as best we can, that is NEVER to shoot before being shot at and try to help other players as much as we can with advice, food, ammo, weapons and sometimes (as far as our comprehension of the situation goes) bloody, justified vengance. We are working on a homepage with a freely acessible Teamspeak Server where you can ask us for help if you need any of the above. Every session has always been a rewarding experience for all of us, no matter the sometimes dire consequences. Every encounter with other players is new and exciting. After a good combined 700hrs into the game no aspect of it has become boring or a chore. It feels as good revisiting places as it feels to discover new ones. There are times when it feels like we haven't been in Berezino for weeks and we cannot wait to get there. New features that enter the game make us superhappy every time - I cannot tell you how excited I am about my camouflaged Mosin - it is the coolest thing I have ever seen. And "Eat All"? That's just mindblowing stuff!!! ;) I do not want to say "this is how to play to have fun" - because if everyone's a hero... you know :) BUT I want to address the issue, that if you complain that the game is always ENDING the same - being cut to a black screen for "no good reason" - you should make the time matter BEFORE the game ends. Otherwise this might be better suited and easier accessible than DayZ: http://www.deerhuntinggames.net/play/14/moorhuhn.html Happy surviving! If you want to make the world a better place Take a look at yourself and then make the change - Michael Jackson PS: I'm looking very much forward to Titanfall as a way to balance out the slow pace and heart-pacing intenseness that DayZ can be and hope that my group will join me there as well.
