  1. The flares cause a serious effect on NVGs up to 800m away. If you've used NVG's around the DayZ flares you will know what I mean. Within 400m of the flare you literally have to turn the NVGs off. The effect is so bad we've had many requests to tone down the power of the flares by NVG users.

    DayZ Update 1.5.1

In my bug report about it Rocket replied saying its an issue with Arma2 specifically' date=' and the only way its looking it will be fixed is that if its identified, put on the dev list for the official Arma2 game, and eventually way down the road released with an actual patch for Arma2. So tl;dr: Get used to Side chat, or ventrillo or teamspeak for a bit. [/quote'] That's not true. I was playing with a friend on a private server and we both still had @dayz in our launch settings (steam users) and direct communications was still broke. He couldn't hear me or see what I wrote in it. However, after we both took out the mod it worked perfectly fine. I think it's the mod affecting it. That's VERY interesting feedback. Would you be able to send me your RPT file to [email protected]?

Made a new bandit skin for you guys

Fantastic. If you're okay with your work being included, please send me the file to [email protected] along with the name you want credited as. I can include it in tonights update. Please also include the details of anyone who it was a derivative work of, so we can include them with credit as well.

Unfortunately, backpacks only work on ArmA2OA/PMC/BAF units (and even then not all of them).

    The PvP Discussion Thread

Personally, I have found when I travel with a group - my life expectancy is an order of magnitude higher than travelling alone. You move using cover, terrain, bounding - use your military tactics and a group can be extremely effective. When our staff team has been moving as a group - we are yet to have a single group member die to human fire despite being contacted many times. Celery has made Chernarus Apoc. This is a textbook cooperative mission. I don't think its worthwhile me doing the same with DayZ as what is the point of the introduced lag and the heavy server administration when everyone is off doing their own thing and minding their business? We will have more CONSEQUENCE for actions. There is a consequence for shooting first on your character - whether that is in cold blood or in self defence. I killed my first player last night. To be honest I didn't really have a reason. I was escorting some newbies to the Southern Airfield, this guy didn't respond to us and started running away. I fired some warning shots as he run away. For some reason, curiosity maybe, or maybe just because I could. I carried on firing and killed him. The event disturbed me so much, I was still thinking about it the next day. I can't recall an event in a video game ever affecting me so much.
  6. If you're scared of NVGs. Use flares (but not right beside you). They make the use of NVG's almost impossible. I don't know why more people have not figured this out yet, but flares have a massive effect on the NVGs in game even from great distances.

    The PvP Discussion Thread

The humanity system, which currently doing nothing, is still gathering data. This allows us to review the data. This is now an organic, living system. You can see, live, the changes that we make have on statistics such as the average survival time. Through players learning how everything works and educating each other - we have seen average life expectancy rise from around 2 hours, to over 4 hours. None of that can realistically be attributed to any development action - its all been player actions. This is not a game, and we don't have the resources to develop/balance/administer the methods of other games even if we wanted too. People seem to mix up regulation with consequence. The two are very separate in this project. Player behavior will NOT be regulated. Ever. But more consequence will definitely be added. The first attempt at this was the bandit skin, making a return in 1.5.2 (finally). This system will always allow you to play and experiment what you would do in such a situation. That is going to result in some cruel, horrifically unbalanced situations which will probably result in some players deleting DayZ and never coming back. But in that process they experienced some real human emotions. If you don't like experiencing those kind of real human emotions, I suggest doing something else where you aren't confronted with them. Like watching Grey's Anatomy.

    The PvP Discussion Thread

DayZ was designed to be impossibly cruel, dark, and brutal. It was not designed as a game it was more of an experiment, I prefer the term "anti-game" - in other words the mechanics are not designed to be balanced, or offer a way out for different situations. These are things game designers normally take care with. I discussed this with the our team members at great length of many arguments, the idea behind safe zones. The eventual consensus was that it went against the ethos of the project. This whole concept, and the reason it "works", is that there IS no safe zone (unless you make it). Your actions have real and brutal consequences. There are no game designed safety nets. It is the kind of system/environment that will sometimes make you want to punch the computer screen. But with that kind of risk, comes great emotional reward when you carry something off. The sniper you describe - there are people like this in the world, and in the breakdown of order I can bet that there would be people who would sit on a roof and shoot people "just for the lulz". The system makes no judgement on player actions, and this is one of the only real rules that was adopted for the development. While consequences may occur for a particular action (e.g. humanity loss), no judgement is implied or placed on that behavior. Beyond hacks, and misuse of exploits, regulating player behavior is not a scope of this project. If players, themselves, wish to group together and attempt to regulate the behavior. Well, that's entirely up to you. This kind of activity is not for everyone. It really is more of a social experiment than a game. There is no intention to change that, if you dislike the PVP, then I would recommend playing Dynamic Zombie Sandbox or Celery's excellent Chernaus Apocalypse - there is no point in these being recreated through this mod. Why make something that has already been done?

    Stuck on Recieving data.

Okay - the getting kicked thing means his files are not setup properly. Verify the mod files are in: @dayz/addons/*.pbo and *.bisign Many people forget the "addons" folder or to unpack the files.

Direct Communication not working at all...

I doubt a dayz patch will fix the issue, unless I rolled back to not spawning you into a new character. If I did this - many exploits would become available again. We will need to confirm what the error is, bug it up on dev-heaven, and then request it to be included in the next arma2 patch.

    Logging off to avoid death

This functionality is already in place. If you take PVP damage, and then disconnect - the game will freeze you in an unconscious state for three minutes.

Direct Communication not working at all...

That would not help, the database simply stores basic attributes - not of which would affect Direct Chat. The bug likely fits with either that we have 50 initial characters in a group, or that we spawn you from the initial mission character into a new character after you are authenticated.

    Military Camp in Stary Sobor

Mistake, forgot to update dayz svn repository before build. Fixed in next update.
  15. Tip's for those who cannot load 1. Make sure your player name contains only standard characters (letters, e.g. "Dean" not "|)3/\N" or something similar. Avoid Cyrillic or any other language characters for the moment. 2. Make sure you have patched ALL the DayZ mod files 3. Try restarting ArmA2. This is especially true if you were able to get in but cannot now. 4. Try connecting to other servers. Sometimes the servers get overloaded, or have been running too long, and take too long to authenticate. 5. Hacked game versions or those who manually changed their CD-Key probably won't work, as the DayZ server tries to store your PlayerID. Doing this means you probably have no playerID so it cannot create you. 6. Delete your MP cache files located in C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\ArmA 2 OA\MPMissionsCache - delete the whole folder. Then try again. 7. Restart your router.
  16. There was an error within the loot spawning code that did not accept values larger than 1. I kept wondering why rubbish did not appear more, so I kept increasing the value. Then I fixed the error (rubbish was at 2.5) and suddenly rubbish was everywhere. This has been altered with 1.5.2, which will be released sometime today. Sometimes (always?) fixing bugs results in other bugs. Some of these only really appear when exposed to large numbers of people.

Direct Communication not working at all...

The DayZ system,... BRIEFLY... used a display event handle to stop people using VOIP/VON on all channels except direct. This was REMOVED in 1.4 1.5.1 has NOTHING in it that should affect direct chat. We have reports that sometimes Direct Chat works and sometimes it does not. Nothing in the DayZ code enables/disables or should effect direct chat at all. Direct Chat is Peer-to-peer and doesn't involve the server (hence why if a server crashes, you can often hear the other person). There are only two theories as to why Direct appears to only sometimes works: 1. Switching the player from their initial character, into a new character, causes the game to not properly register this and so Direct Chat is activated on the OLD character and not their new one. I tried to fix this case by attaching your initial character to your new one (hence the ability to talk to yourself). But this has not solved the issue. Moving into a new body is needed to avoid the disconnection gear exploits and also allow character switching. It makes things much easier for the database, so going back to the original system is not really viable. 2. Too many people in the group. Because everyone is in the same group, perhaps this stops direct chat somehow. We will investigate moving everyone back to individual groups and see if this fixes it. tl;dr = it is likely a bug within ArmA2 that we will have to try and get fixed with a future ArmA2 patch, either associated with group numbers or with the use of selectPlayer.

    Make the mod colourblind friendly

My apologies, I didn't even think about this when I designed the system. I did want the values to be represented by how full the inside of the UI item was, but due to the way ArmA2 UI is designed I can't use alpha sorting to achieve this. When I add in the user menu options, I will include an option to display the icons with text or some other alternative. It's not going to be a fast fix, as I have to do a bit of work. In the meantime I will see what I can do.
  19. I think the issue is with selectPlayer It is putting you in your new body, but not taking that into account sometimes for VOIP. I have a possible workaround that I can do but its a bit messy :)

There should have been no ammo previously. Now there should be a reasonable amount in residential buildings.

    Logging off to avoid death

When you disconnect, no matter how you do it, the server saves your stats. You are not playing the game in your players avatar. You are spawned a new one and this avatar survives after disconnect. You can alt-F4 all you want, but the server will save the exact state. The PVP punishment system will be extended to be aware across servers, and it will be able to detect those who are server hopping. they will receive a warning, and then be killed if continued
